Made the switch to FF - new lenses required...

Thanks again! :D
johnf3f, I think that depends on your shooting style. I'm not as advanced as you most likely are and I simply would be angry with myself if I missed handheld shots because of the lack of IS.

Without IS you will miss hand held shots at very low shutter speeds but your subjects will need fairly high shutter speeds to get them sharp. If you are shooting birds (even perched) 1/500 sec is often too slow and IS/OS/VR is pretty much ineffective at this and higher shutter speeds. With my Canon 800mm I can get sharp images of stationery objects at 1/125 sec hand held with IS, unfortunately that is not really of any use as my subjects are rarely still enough for low shutter speeds.. On birds I generally need 1/1000 sec or higher where the IS is of no benefit and merely serves to hamper (slightly) the AF performance.
I am not saying that IS/OS/VR is useless, far from it, it is just that I find it useless for Bird photography and haven't yet found a use for it on other wildlife. In some other forms of photography it may prove very useful - I am just not doing them!

Burning Man Photo/Lens Advice

When we went in 2009 we took a compact ultra-zoom with a lens filter, and fitted a plastic zipper bag over it and the camera straps so that when you open the bag you can shoot with the camera. There are dust storms and stuff.

There can be a lot of lit stuff at night that will show up in pictures. People light their bikes up, along with themselves and the installations.

Overall, I think I would have had more fun if I were focussing on photography than on partying there. The culture did not jibe well with me despite everyone thinking that BM is my type of scene.

I would recommend only going for the main burn days so that you can have enough strength to enjoy the main event. Otherwise, the elements and nutrition and exercise, hygiene can be a challenge to upkeep.

Fisheye might be cool, Telephoto would come in handy for some more discrete photo ops. I think they encourage asking permission of people to photo them. So telephoto would help with that PIA.

Just be ready to give everyone a hard time and be as annoying as possible..hehe... be ready to really project whatever persona you feel like as that seems to be what a lot of people do.

also consider the police presence and any complications that that may entail.

Good morning all,

Next month I will be going to my first Burning Man and could really use some help from someone with experience taking pictures there.

I currently have a 60D, and my 18-135 has been through hell and has finally reached a point where...well she's tired, really tired.

I really did not want to purchase any other ef-s lenses as it will just prolong the FF purchase, but that's my dilema.

Low light and UWA and Crop is tough for me to accommodate.

I have been kicking around the idea of a 10-22 or the 10-18. Ideally if I could walk in there with a FF and a 24-70 F2.8 I wouldn't even be asking for advice.

With the crop though I don't feel any of the standard zooms will go wide enough for some desired perspective with the exception of the 15-85, but I feel that will limit me to mostly day-time shots.

18-35 will give me everything I want...if it just went a little wider

Any advice is appreciated and also, if that advice is to honestly leave the dslr and just take in the experience (I need this escape more than ever) I will respect that advice too.

I recently rented lenses for Lightning in a Bottle to include 24mm Sigma, 100L, 24-70. They stayed in the vehicle most of the time... However, with BM being longer and...ya I just want some of your input please :)

Birding *without birding gear*?

Is there anything that you can do to encourage the birds to come closer to you? Or is there a particular time of day that they are more active?

Since we are talking eagles here, I'd suggest getting a small dog and leashing it to a tree somewhere where it will be in plain site.

Alternatively, I've seen pictures of eagles making off with peoples' prized koi, so maybe stop by a fish store and pick up a bucket of fish.

A small child might work too, but only if the eagle is very aggressive.

TDP and LensRentals start sharing info...

The TS-E 24mm and 17mm are all tilted a little one way or another. It is just the nature of making a lens that is tiltable by its very nature. The "sharp side" of a given 24 or 17 TS-E will be better than a 135L, which are quite consistent. There is also the issue of the coverglass, which the 135L would not be designed for while the 24 and 17 TS-Es would be designed for. It makes a somewhat small difference, but it is there.

From DPR "Canon 5Ds is a camera for those that know what they are doing"

Tugela said:
Right. And those with money who DO take pictures don't want to be lumped with common people like you. To demonstrate that they are really serious amateurs, shooting with an SL1 would not do, because that is a cheap camera any Joe Blo (such as yourself) could buy. No, to prove that they are serious they HAVE to have a high end system. Remember, they are not trying to impress regular folk, they are trying to impress other photographers. If you are carrying around a 5D (or better still, a 1D), other photographers will think that you are super skilled and advanced, when in fact you are merely taking family snapshots that anyone with a smartphone could do just as well.

When I go down to the seawall in the evenings, I see many people like that wandering around. Very few of them are taking the sort of effort needed to craft a fine photograph. No doubt it makes them feel good about themselves personally, but lets be honest about it.

I hope it wasn't the intent, but this could easily be read as you putting me (and lots of other people) down, and being extremely conceited about your own abilities and efforts.

Preorder the New Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM Art Lens for $999

beckstoy said:
I'm really not sure why they went with this lens after releasing such amazing 24 and 35 primes. Wouldn't they have taken more market share away from Canon with a 135 or 85 f1.4 Art?

If they have a great 85 ART, I'll sell my EF 85 1.2L II - their ART lenses are just that good.

If Sigma comes out with a good 135mm, it will be a "take my money" moment for me. That would be sweet!

Kodak, Leica, etc. Never Existed

Some of the early innovators have indeed fallen along the way. Pentax at one time was the biggest, Minolta was up there too. Some were rolled into different companies, or have become more industrial in nature.

Rollei was big, Mamiya was big, the story seems to be missing the big view and leaves a non photographer thinking that the companies he listed invented the camera.

But Early on, Consumer Cameras were mostly Kodak while PJ's used Graflex. Leica was sought after, but WWII pretty well put them out of favor for many I've had other film and glass plate/sheet film Cameras from the 1800's and early 1900,s as well.
