Canon 5dsR review by Jared Polin

Hi, in fact he is mostly positive to Canon .... And you guys should not make any ADHD characterisations, that below decent behaviour, especially for Norwegians that should know better.
In fact look at his youtube numbers - there must be a lot of people like him as he viewing numbers as quite good.
I´ll accept that and apologize if someone took offense from my blunt wording. But that does not change that it is an extremely over hectic presentation, which gave me nothing and where I still got a headache and had to turn it of. And by the way, I don´t mind people being critical to Canon. Every reviewer should be critical to anything they review.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II Pricing Information [CR2]

Any updates on the 50 1.4 II?

As this forum's resident nut about wanting the 50 f/nooneknows IS USM (i.e the 50 1.4 II you speak of), the only update we've had is that the next two lenses we shall get will be the 35L II and an EF-M 15-45 f/3.5-6.3 STM. So it doesn't look this it's happening this year.

And there is only a very very very small chance it will be called the 50 f/1.4 USM II as all indications are that they'll be putting IS on it, which means it won't be a II, but instead be a first version of a new lens (in Canon's nutty terminology world, which they seem to be very consistent with). The only way I see a 'II' happening is if Canon reserves IS for the 50 f/1.2L, which would be madness in my book.

But we should probably keep discussion to the 35L II on this thread. ;)

Don't forget the mystery 70-300 is still floating out there, too, with more chatter than for a new 50.

Loving my 50A though! Seems to hit most of the time with no adjustment; I'm quite relieved.

Phoblographer takes the DXO lens testing bait

Apparently, a cheap prime can be sharper than a pricey zoom and therefore L lenses are terrible and Canon is ripping us all off. ::)

Regarding the 11-24:

"Despite it being a completely new lens, it rates nowhere near many other new offerings. Sony, Zeiss, Sigma and Nikon seem to dominate the top 10 on the list."

How can they run a photo blog for that period of time and not connect the very basic dots? All of the top lenses in their database were mounted on 36 MP sensors at the time...

Just remember.... by definition, 1/2 of the population is of below average intelligence.

Give DXO credit for targeting their audience....

I want to make a DXO = Fox News joke here so badly -- but I shouldn't. This is a nice place and I don't want to rock that boat.

Costco, Sam's Club, Others Halt Photo Sites Over Possible Breach

As a retired IT manager with some training in security, I think the hackers are showing HUMAN weaknesses. It is far easier to implement technical security tools. People don't always follow procedures, they use simple passwords, they don't use strong encryption and other readily-available ways to improve security.

Given enough time, almost any system can be compromised. However, I note that no one has yet been able to take all of the gold from Fort Knox.

Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

RobertG. said:
I shoot with the Tamron for 1.5 years now. The distortion at 24mm and poor corner resolution bothered me a lot. For some motifs the 24mm wide end is unusable. Yesterday I ordered the EF 24-70mm L II to replace it. The stabilization of the Tamron is less useful than I thought it might be and I gladly exchange it for more resolution and sharpness.

How noisy is the IS motor of the 70-200mm F/4L IS USM?

hydrapenguin said:
Why not just by a third party Tamron or Sigma 70-200? I believe the f/2.8 versions are far cheaper than Canon's, and have good reputations. Here's a link to Tamron's SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892849-REG/Tamron_20_200mm_F_2_8_DI_VC.html

Thanks for the tip, hydrapenguin.

I generally don't like to go for third party options when it comes to lenses. That's just a personal preference due to various experiences over the past years. I already found a good deal on a used Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM, so I'm all set. :)

6D or 5ds

Sundog04. I am quite happy with my BIF results with my 6D and 400mm f/5.6 lens. None of my older bodies come close to the 6D in that respect. I have never used a 5D3 or 1D anything, so I am not commenting on them, which are likely better. I use the center focus point only and the 8.5 meter limit on the 400mm. If you want to get a start with BIF, and don't want to spend a fortune, you can do well with the old workhorse f/5.6.

Review: Canon EOS 750D & EOS 760D via DXOMark

The gap between Sony sensors and Canon sensors will only continue to widen at the pace Canon is going.

Does it matter? Sure, it seems to matter to a few people here on CR, but CR is not the real world.

Yes, it matters.
It matters for the same reason I no longer use my Canon D6 with EF 35-350, or before that my Konica FT-1 or Rollei, or before that, my Instamatic and Brownie cameras. Progress is good, and it is incremental.

Review: Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art

I might be in the minority, but size and weight aside, this seems like a street photogs dream lens. The ability to go from a 24mm standard wide angle to a 35mm focal length would be great for travel and street. The constant f2 would benefit low light event photography as well where adding context to a scene can be very important. I'll definitely give it a test run once I take delivery of my A7RII & suitable adapter.
Agreed, except A7R2.
I agree too...except for the A7RII with an "adapter". Street photographers and event photographers require a "fast-focusing" AF lens. I am going to guess that combo is not. Right?
Sony rocks the best FF sensor out there but........

Air show evening show gear and technique tips.

Thanks all for your help and images posted.I'll put some of mine on the other page with the military airshows etc. Just wanted to put down my post show thoughts. The EF 300 f2.8 with 1.4x extender was plenty of lens, though I saw quite a few people there with bigger lenses on gimbals. The show started in early evening so there was enough light to get some good in flight shots.

I hand held the 300 the entire time and I think that that enabled me to get some good flyby shots. The f15 and 16 flybys were just too fast at least for me to capture any shots while on a tripod and really it was not needed for the daylight portion.

I made a classic photographer mistake in bringing my non-photographer son who was not interested in me getting good fireworks shots, so Valvebounce kudos for getting great shots of the planes and fireworks. It was fun and I'll do it again alone next year.

Cross posting on the other board this message and images.

PhotoZone starts testing lenses on 5DSr

*DXO, despite being batsh-- crazy, oddly gets full marks here as they do update their lens testing as new bodies are released. But that's another conversation.
I thought they calculate most of the values and doesn't actually test them? At least that's what I've read & it sounds possible as re-testing everything well.. is quite a job to do. I could be wrong tho.

I've not heard that they estimate values -- that's interesting.

But Roger Cicala's 5DS vs. 5DSR vs. 5D3 resolution figures would imply that's not just a matter of sensor resolution at play. More pixels reward all lenses -- but how much they are rewarded and where in the frame they are rewarded is somewhat inconsistent. I imagine that might complicate running calculations.

DoF features : wishlist or stupid question ? your opinion ...

Hi RunAndGun.
I think you are thinking of A-DEP, this worked to make sure you had the aperture to cover the dof you required. You had to focus on the near point, then the far point and the camera would select an aperture to suit, I tried it out on my 1000FN, it worked quite well up to a point, I don't recall the camera bothering if it put the shutter speed waaay to low for hand holding, and of course we couldn't just bump the ISO up to 1600 or 3200 or more on better bodies like we can today! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

RunAndGun said:
Some older film bodies did have a depth-of-field auto exposure shooting mode. I've never used it, or delved much into it, but my EOS-3 has it.
