Point and Shoots?

I have a Sony RX 100 that I use occasionally, but then the usage has been going down steadily over the past year. I find myself increasingly using the iPhone for casual shots in situations where carrying a DSLR is not possible.

Hmmm ... This thread has got me thinking. Maybe I should put the Sony RX100 up for sale.

If you don't use a camera that is dropping in value every month, no matter how good it is, sell it before its value drops to $10.

Fast prime for Croped body advice (24-35mm)

sootzzs said:
Don't forget the IS of the 35. It seem to be more than enough compensation for the F1.8 vs F2. As I told before my only concern is it will be too tight on a crop, but I think this is my choice. I will try to find a good deal next week when I'll travel to England. At around 400GBP it is 75GBP cheaper that I can get it here (Israel) so it seems like a good deal to me.

Thanks!

Absolutely. However it depends on what one shoots and how steady ones hands are. On the wider end, I haven't found IS terribly useful (occasional video is the exception). My good photography buddy has the new 35 f/2 IS and really enjoys it on his 7D2.

Since you said you plan to jump to FF, the 35mm FL is probably more useful for you in that regard as well!

Good Luck!

I've had my 7Dii for one month now, thoughts:

Thanks, East Wind.

I shoot RAW all of the time, I should afma my version I 100-400, I just wanted to make sure the 7DII is set up proper before I head down that road so I can tell if there was any change.

I've been reading a bit on Arthur Morris's blog and here as well on how to set up a 7DII. I'm thinking it may all come down to new glass as it seems most people either use the 100-400 IS II or a faster prime.

Honestly I never liked the original 100-400. I tried two copies and both wide open were giving soft images and some coma which greatly affected the AF response. At the time I opted for the 70-200 mkiiwith 1.4 extender. I now use the 300mm II and 600mm I.

I haven't tried the 100-400 mkii but I also hear it's much better than the version 1. Maybe rent one for a couple of days and see how it works for you.
I have used the 100-400II with 5D3 and I like it very much. It is excellent fully open and when closed 2/3 of a stop with a 1.4XIII. It also focuses fast. What I do not like so much is the reverse use of rings. It makes you forget to zoom in after a needed zoom out (at least this has happened to me). Overall I think you will like it a lot.

16-35F4 L IS, Any good?

I'm already planning on selling mine if a new 16-35mm 2.8 from Canon is released.

As much as I love this for a "fun" lens, I guess I had to purchase an f/4 to really KNOW, deep down in my bones, how much I NEED f/2.8.

Great for an f/4 though! And the IS just adds to the sharpness.

Still, I see this focal length primarily, for me, as an event (including weddings, christenings, anything in tents during the day) lens, and the loss of an f/stop limits its usefulness.

Here are two shots, camera is set exactly the same for both at 11mm on FF. back of SUV is around 6m, the blue circle is a cap off a peanut jar and is a few inches from the lens, they are both distorted the same.

A very effective demonstration.

Either StudentOfLight needs to study a bit more, or the problem is that spare tires and peanut jar caps aren't people. ;)

;)
Yes, well demonstrated.

I apologise LJ, I was wrong. The effect is still there at larger distances.

If the subject is smaller then the problem is still there just smaller. Attached is a 100% crop picture of me taken 8m from a wall with the Samyang 14mm, me at the edge of frame. I am looking (quite unambiguously) fat-in-the-head. :-[

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Talk [CR1]

I noticed that there was someone who made a request to be deleted from this forum, the point was that there was no option to delete your own account and you have to ask admin.
I think there are a few people on here deserving of “ye olde hefty boot” from admin these days.
This is a Canon site where, if I’m not wrong; Canon owners come to discuss gear and seek knowledge from the fantastic and helpful people who frequent this site.
So why are there people who feel the need to come here and tell us how poor our preferred products are compared with the Sony’s and Nikons on the market?? I don’t feel the need to go anywhere near their specific pages because there’s nothing of interest for me, I choose Canon and I’m delighted with my choice.
…………..AND while I’m on my soapbox, there is still a noticeable and overwhelming percentage of Canon photographers at all major sporting events, suck it up Sony/Nikon fanboys!!!! ;)

Or Nikon, or whatever...

No, come with Dilbert and I to the Sony store, my mate said you can for sure get a deal for three lens and body kits. You'll regret ever having bought that 400mm f2.8 once you see the files from that Exmor beast and the Sonnar 55mm f1.8 lens.

BSI and Stacked sensors | byThom | Thom Hogan

it is not just BSI, it is the materials they used:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2015/06/16/sony-qa-the-must-have-sensor-tech-of-the-future

Thom is a great guy, but he should stop guessing when he has

1) not tired the camera in question
2) not gathered all the facts behind the camera before he talks.

in particular the new copper conductor used should help things a bit as pointed to in the link above.

Canon EOS 5D Series Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

I had just bought a 30d when I was at a wedding and the main photographer was shooting the 5d. I was kind of in awe of the camera. Later on I finally managed to buy a 5dmk2 which has been my main camera since launch (I think it's 6-7 years now). I actually can't remember having a single issue with the mk2 and I've learnt so much using it. The mk3 just wasn't enough of an upgrade although I did like the improved autofocus, dual card slots and reduced shutter lag. I think I'll be happy with the 5dsr which should be started to be shipped today sometime. Of course like some have mentioned the 5d series has also had some negative things about it but what camera doesn't? Starting a video revolution was a major thing.

Pertaining to the matter of trolls

Yes, it is a technical forum, but look at the image galleries.... They are filled with example after example of inspiring pictures and lots of helpful hints.... very few trolls there, just helpful people.

BTW, the best photography advice I have ever gotten about photographing small birds came from Jon Rista... and it was to get a small hunting blind and a chair and set it up near where your target frequents...

Teardown: Canon EOS 5Ds

Instead of improving the secret inside of the camera (which seems to be okay with the marketing department as it doesnt hurt their strange strategies), Canon should have improved video quality or dynamic range. It both feels a bit like as if it's 2008, which is a bad sign for a camera when this should be a flagship until the year 2018 and competitors adding new great specs each year to their products.

After using the 5DsR for a while, it really is a 5D3 with some minor improvements and most of all a fantastic way to be able to do more extreme crops (which gives more creative freedom). Many other simple-to-implement features of are missing (like focus peaking, which also would be helpful for manual photography like with Zeiss lenses and not only video).

Its not a flagship camera, that will be the 1D X II, and I think the 5D IV will be better as well, people wanted a high MP 5D and that's what Canon made, reduced noise, enhanced the body design, and improved whats already a great camera, at least in the stills area, and I am sure that's because the 5D IV will handle video.

1DX is a speed flagship, but 5Ds is the resolution flagship. The 5Ds through resolution has - unlike the 5D3 - a significant photo advantage over the 1DX, and a price that comes close to traditional flagship levels as well. Right now it is very strange that if i go out and want to do highest quality video and photo at the same time, i need a 1D for video (C version), and a 5D for photo (sR version) - which was supposed to be the other way around years ago.

I guess highest quality is relative.

DPReview: Canon Rebel T6s/T6i Lab Report added to First Impressions

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the dips... our wedge needs some finessing. We basically need larger patches, ideally completely isolated as well, so that our quantitation is less sensitive to things like dust particles and other imperfections that can cause a drastic SNR drop (though we do shoot everything out-of-focus).

My point being - you can believe the general trends, but there is some 'noise' in the data. We're working on completely rehauling our quantitative dynamic range setup.

OK, some improvements are still to be made in the setup which should then provide more consistent data. I look forward to having another source of data to evaluate an imaging system.

How many data points/wedge-steps are used to generate this chart?
