5DS: Some Thoughts After Shooting w/ It Last Week

LSXPhotog said:
This is a camera that I think Canon could suffer from almost too mass marketing.

At £3,000 I don't think that will be a problem!

Outside the studio and landscape arena its cost / benefit ratio is far too low.

1. I have colleagues who make good money shooting airshows through the Summer season and they don't even care that there is an entire range of Canon full-frame cameras, crops are their money-makers. So the 5DS is irrelevant to them.

2. Wildlifers who can't fill the frame at 1200mm won't want to pay that mooney just to add another 20 MP of sky to their processing workflow

3. Even Gordon Geckos who bought the original 5D to keep in the BMW X5 isn't likely to spend that much money on a camera for his kids' sports days. Not when they can buy a 'Hasselblad' for $1600!

I do agree that its life expectancy is short, given that all it brings is megapixels.

Thinking about upgrading to a 6D from a 60D. Thoughts?

Don't upgrade just for the sake of "upgrading." Ask yourself if you need it first. If you have a specific requirement, and the 6D matches that, then just do that. Sounds like you just want a new toy to play with though. If your goal is to make your photography better, that likely won't happen if you haven't mastered your 60D (or photography in general) to some degree. If you just want to burn money, and you are satisfied with your 60D, then just get a lens. I'd recommend the Sigma 18-35 1.8

DigitalRev TV - Zhongyi Optics Mitakon Speedmaster 85mm f/1.2

Sweet. If you can afford it, you really can see the difference.
I di not miss one of the shots.
And let's be fair.
You come to a shoot and you have The Pomelo.
Hmmmm...so he has the Pomelo.
HTF did he get the money to get one. If he's paid the price, he probably knows what he's doing.
Or he has some easy money, like the mineral or the herbal kind.

Whatever.
It was easy to see who one was Canon which was not.
And then?
And then?
And then?

I still want to have the Pomelo.
OK it cost me 1600 dollars second hand but It Is The Pomelo
Look at the reviews. The Lense.

Thoughts on L lenses and the 24-70 2.8 II

Rented the 24-70 mkII once and fell in love. I have and currently use the crap out of my 24-70 mkI. I guess I'm lucky because it has been pretty sharp for me for a long time. Recently sent it to Canon when I noticed some oddities after a trip, and they fixed some things and now its sharper than ever. At some point I want to trade up though, even though I loathe that they changed the filter size from 77mm (all my other lenses) to 80..

Falling damage is a weird thing - my phone survived 3-4' drops onto concrete, asphalt, and stone just fine. What killed it? Falling 2' onto laminate "hardwood" flooring. Which has actual "give" to it. There's a whole lot of random to exactly how the impact occurs.

Patent: Canon Tilt-Shift with Image Stabilization

Sindre Ellingsen said:
Well, maybe I drink too much... :)

...

If I did this hand held, the change of roll, pitch, yaw and forwards/backwards motion of the camera would ruin the final image, or make it really hard to assemble. Carrying a tripod is not that hard, so why not.

Spaces where tripods are considered weapons of mass destruction, is another matter :)

I did say I usually took a tripod on paying work - hand holding my gigapan is something I'm still working on though...

The example you give is hardly something I'd shoot hand held, whilst the cathedral shot has no close foreground to cause any parallax issues.

Sorry, but carrying a tripod when I'm just out and about is a right pain in the rear. I virtually never use one for any landscape work. As I said though ... YMMV ;-)

Camera serial number and exif serial don't match

SierraDon said:
The camera is an old 5D classic- so if I want Canon to repair/check it- I need to send it in before the end of September this year.

I thought it would not hurt to get its sensor cleaned and other things checked out considering the camera's age, and maybe the exif reset to the proper serial number, so if I ever sell it, the question of the mismatch does not come up.

I know I can reset the prior owner's name with an early version of the Canon EOS utility, but I have only newer versions which don't support the 5D. The 5D did NOT come with the software disk which supports the 5D. I would like to get rid of the previous owner's name in the exif file. Can Canon change both the serial number and owners name in the exif file??

Is there a better way than sending the camera back to Canon??

Thanks!!
You can download the Canon utility, there is no reason not to do it. A camera that old likely has had repairs.

If the mirror fix has not been done, have it done!!

OVF and OVF for both eyes

With EVF's, its just a matter of size, weight, and cost, no technical issues other than development costs.

One reason against twin evf is that just adds bulk for some comfort for people finding the current ergonomy challenging. But the most important part for your two eyes being in front - stereoscopic 3d vision - is lost if the "through the lens" view simply gets duplicated.

Last not least, for photo journalism shooting when your eye is glued to the vf it's handy to be able to see a wider part of the scenery with the other eye w/o taking down the camera.

Yes, A significant number of users would need to want such a thing, it would likely be another failure point, adjusting the eyepieces for each eye, both diopter and spacing.

Personally, I'm inclined to think I'd not want one.

7D Mark II Firmware update??

So I have had my 7D MKII back from support for a couple of weeks now. The lock up issue with 1.04 seems to have gone away. I have not had that problem since the one event I shot.

Having said that, I am completely disappointed with my 7D MKII. The focus, while it seems to be better, still isn't
spot on. I have gone through and did macro adjustment for all my lenses (24-70 f/2.8), 24-105 f/4, 70-200 f/2.8 II and 100-400 f4.5-5.6

The focus is just not able to lock on to subjects. It constantly hunts, and frankly, the images coming out of this camera are absolutely useless to me.

I purchased this body specifically for an upcoming trip to Alaska. Unfortunately I will be leaving the 7D MKII at home and will take my 5D MKIII and 5D MKII. I cannot take a chance with this body, and will likely be selling it when I get back from my trip, unless Canon gets its act together and replaces it.

But I refuse to pay for shipping to get any further warranty work done on it.

I guess I am just going to have to send mine in.

I was on the phone with Derrick of Technical Support for quite a while today and he was unaware of any pending firmware updates for the 7D Mark II. Guess that doesn't really mean anything though.

He had me do a few resets, and asked me to try some more shots.

I am pretty certain I will be shipping mine out on Thursday.

Don't hesitate. I took my body back to the store I bought it from for an exchange today (under 30 days and they'll replace no questions asked.)

The new body shocked the heck out of me. Razor sharp without me having to do *anything* with it. Precisely what I expected from this AF system when I first got it. I took a few shots... I got birds, with actual feathers... not blobs of muddy flying objects in the general shape of something with feathers. With the kit lens.

I almost broke down in tears with relief after I opened the first few raw files in ACR. It was that much better.

Got my 7D2 back from Canon on Friday evening. I don't know what they did to the camera other than load the new firmware on it (funny how they never tell you what they do during repairs). Anyway, focus is now corrected and images are sharp as a tack. I had the body paired with my 24-105 f/4L and was shooting an event for our fire department. Camera locked up twice. Had to power cycle it to get it to fire again. Hasn't locked up since. Fingers are crossed....although I will be contacting Canon about the lock up issue.
I hope I don't encounter the 1.0.4 firmware issue. So far the camera has been solid as a rock and I've had the new firmware on there since it was posted on the Canon USA site. I shot 450 pictures yesterday and not a single lockup or freeze, and I had the settings right for what I was shooting so I got a lot of amazing pictures - including a few that had no right to be in focus that were. But I don't run settings too far from defaults and haven't AFMA'ed my lenses, which I assume you did. (I also cleared my settings before flashing)

I'd say the camera gets better every time I take it out, but the truth is I'm probably just adapting to it and its requirements. I'd like to think I'm capable of a little improvement from time to time. :) No where near enough to quit my day job though. :P

Pentax to use Sony Sensor in Full Frame Camera

neuroanatomist said:

If you check the IR page with all the comparison shots, it's obvious this gimmick has its uses, much like the gimmick of a high end TS or 5x mag macro lens.

I've found this 'gimmick' very useful in photomicroscopy applications for well over a decade (and I did my own comparison shots when the technology was more novel).

My point is that like a TS or 5x macro lens, it's a niche application. Useful for some individuals, but not something Canon execs are going to lose sleep over.

Indeed, 51MP is a lot of detail, even when bayered, and that'll provide a huge boost to a lot of shooters.
but it'll be nice to have the shifty option available on a few other mfrs' products, just for fun.
I was tempted to get the Oly EM52 but a FF with 36 MP & shift will be a much more compelling option.

600 SPEEDLITE OFF-CAMERA SETUP

Hi Amber,

Well the manual isn't very clear, as in, clear as mud!

I don't have a 60D in front of me but I believe when you go to the 'Flash control' option in the menu, first red tab on the left, when you click on 'Wireless function' you have four choices, choose 'Ext only' and I believe you are done (if not try the other options).

If this doesn't work then you do have the option to make the same basic thing happen via Groups, the popup will always be in Group A, so if you put your 600-EX-RT in Group B and lower the output of Group A either in flash M mode or in ETTLII via the 8:1 ratio thing, then you will get an almost meaningless output from the popup.

Hope his helps.

P.S. Here is a PDF of the manual that has way more than 121 pages and all in English :)

Recommendations needed: more than a D30, less than a 5DIII

I wasn't really aware of high quality flexible housings when I made my decision. It definitely looks worth a try, but I'm no longer in the market. With the Sony/Ikelite/Sea&Sea combo I have reached the point where I need a skill upgrade much more than an equipment upgrade :).

RobertG. said:
Did you consider a flexible Ewa Marine housing for your 5dIII? I use the U-B100 housing for my 5DII and it works, although it is not the most comfortable way of shooting. You can't zoom a lens and no dome port is available.

What ones best?

I am going to throw an idea at you.

I spent the last week testing BOTH the 17 TS-E and 24 TS-E II with the new 1.4x III teleconverter. Why? I shoot with multiple cameras with architecture as my subject and was thinking about getting a second 24 TS-E II. On a lark, I decided to see what the 1.4X III teleconverter would do with the 17 TS-E.

In a nutshell...

The 17 TS-E + 1.4x III converter has a small amount of barrel distortion, but because it is from the teleconverter, it is on the optical axis and easy to remedy. Sharpness? The combo gives an equivalent focal length of 23.8mm which I have compared directly to my 24 TS-E II. The combo image is FAR superior to the first generation 24 TS-E and almost indistinguishable from the 24 TS-E II. Give a little proper sub-pixel level sharpening and no client would ever know which image was shot with the 24 TS-E and the 17 TS-E + 1.4x III teleconverter.

The the resultant image is your sole concern, you could get the 17 TS-E and the 1.4X III teleconverter and have both focal lengths at your disposal.

BTW, the 24 TS-E II also works VERY well with the 1.4x III extender.

Based upon my tests, I have contacted Canon with the idea of producing a 1.2X teleconverter SPECIFICALLY for their TS-E line. That would result in the owner of the 17 and 24 also being able to shoot 20 and 28 focal lengths. For architectural photographers this would be huge.
