Vincent Laforet Takes Project AIR to Europe

HTML:
Vincent Laforet is one of my favourite photographers, the stuff he did from the sky over New York City were breathtaking. So I’m looking forward to his work on Project AIR over the great cities in Europe.

From CPN

Photographer and filmmaker Vincent Laforet has flown over some of America’s most iconic cities at night with a camera – with breathtaking results. He is now winging his way to Europe and wants you to be a part of ‘Project AIR’, as he explains to CPN Editor David Corfield…

“This is, without a doubt, the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on,” admits Vincent Laforet, “and yet it very nearly didn’t get off the ground.”

What lens should they have used, and why?

85L or 100L, because they are better lenses.

Neither of those lenses are significantly sharper than the 85 1.8 at f/5.6.

The 100L is noticeably better in the corners, certainly for contrast (which is a core aspect of resolution), and in the center it doesn't introduce the false colours the 85 f1.8 does so an accurate resolution measurement is much easier.

In truth the 100L would be a much more appropriate lens to be doing these tests with.

Thank you. I was just about the write the same thing. IQ tests on the-digital-picture show the 85L is slightly better in the corners, and the 100L is significantly better in the corners. The 85/1.8 is a fine lens, but there is a difference.

Thanks for all the replies, very interesting, the 85L has it then as the 100 is outwith the range they use which is a pity.
As an aside I didn't realise that one of the great strengths of the 85L was actually sharpness at higher Fs, all talk seems to revolve around wide open creamy goodness. It must be a fabulous lens to use!

I want to assume the pixels won't get larger. That's really the only way I know to increase the FWC in the current 1Dx sensor. If that won't happen, can the DR improve at high ISO by a 1/2 or a full stop? If so, how will they do it?

One way would be to move to a finer fabrication process. This would result in less "wasted space" and would improve the quantum efficiency... they MIGHT get a third of a stop from that, but it would be pushing it....

Why are Canon increasing MP count in a low light pro beast if it has a worsening effect on high ISO IQ, as guess to understand based on this explanation? Aren't Canon shooting themselves in their footby doing so?
The finer fabrication process is only one way to improve things, and I am sure that there are a lot more. Look at the 7D replacement 7D2.... The megapixel count went up, yet the ISO performance went up by about 1 1/2 stops, only about a half stop could be explained by a fabrication change. I would expect that going from a 1DX to a 1DX2 would be at least a similar gain.... unless Canon has a few more surprises for us...

Aye, more than one way to skin a sensor. :P

Backside Illumination. Multi-layered Photodiodes. CCD backing stores (i.e. multi-bucket pixels). Deep photodiodes (the photodiode is deeper, and the charge separation layer reaches deeper, increasing it's surface area, which increases charge capacity).

There are also more out of the box concepts, like continuous readout. This is where during exposure, the pixels are basically photon counters and bit flippers, and constantly read out. Rather than accumulating charge, you simply ratchet up an infinite count. To be effective (i.e. to not accumulate massive amounts of read noise at the same time), other technological improvements are necessary to keep read noise extremely low, and Q.E. apparently needs to be very high (basically 100% for them to actually act as photon counters, and I don't know that 100% is actually totally necessary), but it is technically a means of achieving infinite dynamic range. (And that might even be possible if counts were done in/converted to a 32-bit float rather than a 16-bit int.)

I've read also about electron multiplier CCD sensors. This thing can essentially raise ultra-low signal above read noise level. In this way both DR and high ISO could be improved dramatically. But I can imagine even APS-C sized sensor would be insanely expensive.

Canon EOS Rebel SL2 This Fall? [CR1]

Tiny pentamirror viewfinders should now be confined to the dustbin of history, if you can't fit at least a pentaprism the size of the 70D's, go for a half decent EVF instead. Even the 1.04M dot units fitted to the Sony A6000 and the original Olympus EM5 are superior to the Rebel's offering.
I have to disagree. I used to have a 550d and have used my girlfriend's E-M10 and I prefer the OVF of 550d (Altho I also think that E-M10 is much better overall camera, but that's not the point here.) over E-M10's EVF. I don't know how to describe it well... it's maybe something with the screenish look of the EVF, I don't know. Just last Sunday I was checking out the new E-M5 II and still felt that the EVF wasn't really what I'd expected, apart from the great size it has (and ignoring all the extra info it can display, to keep this comparison a bit simpler).

Actually, now that I mentioned it. I was already severely disappointed after I had had hands on with Sony A7, oly's OM-D and others like those in a local shop sometime last year (I'm not actually sure, when it was) as any EVF didn't "feel right". I don't mean they're bad but just to point out, that SL2/whatever is better with OVF, as it can fit it. Canon has their M-line for mirrorless and EVF stuff, if they just got any proper models out ffs. About M3: it is obviously a good camera but come on, it's overpriced when compared to rivaling models from others.

Each to their own, but remember that EVFs are at their worst in typical indoor lighting. I found the viewfinder fitted to the Rebels to be little more than a crude aiming device, you simply cannot tell what is in focus (not that the 5D3 with stock screen is brilliant). At least Canon have finally fitted a decent AF system to the 750D/760D, I found that my 450D missed focus far too often, despite all looking fine through the viewfinder.

SDXC card size limit in 5DmkIII ?

Robert Welch said:
I'm wondering if there is an upper size limit for the SD(XC) card slot in the 5DmkIII. So far, I've only used the 32GB cards, but am looking to get a 128GB SDXC card. I know someone who has used 64GB cards ok, so I assume a 128GB should work. Before I buy one, thought I'd check to see if it would work for sure, and if anyone has tried bigger cards even. Has anyone tried a 256GB card?

I'm using a 128GB Transcend SDXC and it works with no problems.

Review - Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG Art

The worst part is spending literally thousands of shots trying to figure out how and why the Art lenses miss. I calibrated and recalibrated with FoCal and using the docking to have it dead on, then wake up the next day and it suddenly misses by little in front sometimes, then a little behind and then every 8-10 shots suddenly 8 feet in front shooting at 10 feet.

Four art lenses and the same with all four on the 1dx. It is my absolute favorite lens that 50, but when it can't focus I have no desire to own or use it anymore.

Canon EF 14mm F2.8 MKII - Advice Needed

Hello all,

drawing from the experience and knowledge of others can anyone tell me if the above lens is a good choice for landscape image? I primarily shoot wildlife but am finding myself capturing the odd scenery and surroundings image during my travels. Early next month I plan to travel to Matchu Pitchu and am considering the EF 14mm MKII. I've never shot that wide of an angle lens and will it be too "fish eye" for landscapes? Also my previous lens was a 17-40mm but I got some vignetting with my 5D2 and 1DX using that so I sold it. I'm wondering if the 14mm will be worse?

Review: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

I love this lens but I have 2 small gripes:

1. The Lid Cover sucks! I would have preferred one similar to the Nikon 14-24mm. Just a piece of rubber that is pretty much air tight. The lid on this lens allows in a lot of dust and it rubs against the built-in lens hood to where it feels like i'm scrathing it.

2. For some reason the Front element attracts lint and dust that is not easily removed unless you use a Rocket Blaster. Even a microfiber towel won't remove the lint unless you add some type of solution.

Lexar CF cards FAIL - Sandisk?

This is quite an old thread (and topic). We all know that the pro Lexar and pro SanDisk cards are among the best you can get. Unfortunately cards, from both manufacturers, do fail from time to time.

Some of us have used Lexar for years and never had a problem. Others swear by SanDisk and have never had a problem either. Others have had problems with one or another, and in extreme cases both manufacturers.

I seriously believe that neither manufacturer is better than the other.

Here. In order, original file, original file processed, crop of original file processed, setup shot.

I'm happy.

High DR, like even 8 or 10 at high ISO's would be a area where the improvement is worthwhile. Right now, Canon edges out the competition, but its a struggle.

The Sony A7s actually tops Canon DSLRs by quite a bit. It delivers 9.9 stops at ISO 6400, still delivers 8.8 at ISO 51200, and is still delivering 8.1 at ISO 102400. Conversely, the 1D X is 6.6 @ 51200, 6.0 @ 102400. The 6D actually delivers 6.7 at 51200, and the D4 is 7.1 at 51200.

It's 12 mp for heaven's sake.

Personally, because I stitch a lot, I'd love a 5D t - assuming the 't' stood for 12 mp. Can't see it ever happening.

There are plenty of people who think current cameras have too many MP. That argument was pushed on these forums for quite some time after even higher resolution cameras hit the market. The 1D X is only 18mp, for that matter, which by todays standards is very low.

Any airshows in western North America with the sun on the performers?

Mt Spokane Photography said:
There are factors like runway north/south or east/west, and which side you can have access to.

At Noon, its going to be difficult.

I sympathise with Jim because that's exactly the problem we have here unfortunately - north/south runway with the crowd on the eastern flightline and the aerial displays starting from 10am so there's not a lot of time with the subject well lit

Wait a minute: just 4 answers in the thread concerning the heir of Canon's best-selling lens (excluding kit) and >30 answers about the 1200mm @ 180.000 $? :o :o :o
Maybe I have to move to a less aristocratic forum. :-[ :-[ :-[

Back to topic: if I was tired of waiting for a 50mm (presumably without IS) F/1.8, would it be a good idea to buy an (used) 50mm F/1.4 which is considered good from F/2.0 on? What do Canonrumors' popular masses think?
I think that lenses like the Canon 1200mm are like the famous top models ... We talk about them they, and have desires, but we know that are out of our reach.

Speaking of lenses, I had Canon 50mm F1.4 USM, and it was a good lens to be used in F2 or narrower. I waited many years for a Canon 50mm decently sharp when wide open. I gave up waiting and replace my Canon 50mm for Sigma Art, which I love. The Sigma Art is not as sexy as the Zeiss Otus, but Sigma was within my reach.

Desires ...
