Yes, I realize they don't literally have to be touching, but with standard (nondirectional) antennas, the typical range of NFC is only about four inches (10 cm). The longest-range versions that I'm aware of only reach about twice that distance. That's a short enough range to preclude, for example, the obvious use case—putting this device in your pocket and hanging the camera around your neck and having the devices synchronize with each other transparently over NFC.

Edit: Also, the speed is probably dependent on distance, so that maximum speed is likely measured at an inch or two away. Even if it managed to barely pick up a signal from pocket-to-chest distance, it would be slower than molasses in February.

I use remarked promaster filters on my L lens they are dust resistance and water will actually ball up and roll off the filter. the digital hgx with repellamax coatings . I think it a hoya filter
something to consider. and I too have a mint 50mm 1.8 lens it even has the passed JCII sticker still on it. but I don't use any filter on it I feel the lens is almost new but the electronics are almost 30 years old and don't want to put a extra load on the focus motor.

In decent to good light, I think the 7DII will be an amazing camera. In lower light, it might be if the RAW files are as good as the ISO 3200 squirrel photo appear to be. And you always have the 1D X when you shoot in the moonlight

As for the processing, if these are like all of the other samples Canon posts, they are most likely straight-out-of-camera JPEGs, which the EXIF data seems to corroborate. That means the DIGIC 6 has done its magic, which is probably substantial. In the ISO 6400 city shot, you can definitely see the heavy handed processing, making me think that the RAW wouldn't be too great. The 3200 shot looks far less processed, leading me to believe that DxO PRIME would do very well with the RAW file.

Canon is really pushing the camera, with the shift away from P&S to higher models, they need to get it right.

Actually Patent trolls are a very unfortunate part of doing business in the USA.

Patents elsewhere are much harder to obtain. In the US the principle is (very roughly) patent anything, then fight it out in court. In most of Europe, you have to show quite a lot of proof that you really are patenting something new, novel, and of some worth (been there, done that)

It's why I'm absolutely dead against an EU/US tie up on this matter. We inherit all the US lax patents then end up filling lawyers pockets trying to undo the damage... it would decimate the UKs small and medium businesses who are the mainstay of the UK economy.

Why? I HAVE an AE-1 sitting in the closet, along with its radioactive 50mm f/1.8 prime. (Truth: it was my Mom's camera, I would be using my own old-timey M42-mount Mamiya-Sekor DTL 1000 and its stable of lenses (60mm f/2.8 preset 1:1 macro, complete with hexagonal bokeh!) if I were to shoot 135 film again).

If I wanted retro, I would go for real retro: shoot 4 x 5 film.

I think some of those questions are problematic:

1,2,etc) I think photographers heavily invested into Canon equipment deserve to see be treated as valued customer, e.g. see Canon's roadmap, but it's borderline intruding into Canon internal policies. E.g. Canon doesn't owe it to anyone to release a 36MP camera, esp if management thinks there's no money in it.

This is clearer in question #6: Canon doesn't have to explain it's customers how it's going to stay profitable.

4) "Retro good looks"? This is what people judge a camera manufacturer by?

7) What apps would one want to use a DSLR for? Calendar? Waze? Chess?

Phones are multi-function devices, serving as phones, PDOs, cameras, game machines, etc. Cameras aren't. I can see some benefit in the ability to program the camera, e.g. ML, but I don't see it stretched as far as smartphones.

Thank you for all the great replies, which brought up some things I hadn't thought about. Funny how many people (myself definitely included) agonize over these decisions, when at the end of the day we are talking about a tool. How many people worry about timing of the latest Dewalt drill?

Please keep in mind that light conditions at those booths are very poor. I had to crank up the ISO to 3200 to get to around 1/100s.

I'm asking this silly thing because there are days when I have to lift my camera up and take pictures without actually seeing my viewfinder, and I press the sutter button fully expecting that the camera will search for the focusing distance and the take a picture, but it just stops doing anything. It searches AF points only when halfpressed

I wonder if Canon will announce more Cameras with more pixels this year?

Well, for some reason "heat expansion" isn't a problem for Nikon or Sigma superteles so I'm gonna go with the white lens being a brand thing. Canon was able to equate "white lens" with "quality product" so that's why you see companies like Samsung going with white. Sony's white lenses are holdovers from Minolta, who were also trying to do the same thing in the mid/late 80's.

I don't know where you got that idea, but the 70-200/2.8L IS II is 1,490g, and the 400/4DO II is 2,100g.

My bad, I was under the impression that 70-200/2.8L IS II is around 1800g and this is just under 2000g. Still, nice weight, nothing terrible to handhold.

In use weight is 1700g with the 70-200, but it remains to see what the "in use" weight of the 400 DO is.

What lenses do you have? What lenses would you like to have? Cost of moving up to full frame could be significant if you don't have any full-frame lenses yet. I am still using some 40 year old legacy lenses (back of closet) on adapters on my 6D. Admittedly, I like manual focus. Image quality of APS-C camera is pretty reasonable, I have enlarged some images up to 2 ft by 3 ft - but I don't stand on top of the image and count individual leaves on trees a quarter mile off, either.

That's not the way you do it most of the times, especially because it may not always be effective. When you can control light, there are far better ways to avoid unwanted reflections.

The 1DX and the 7dII are two whole different markets but I'm not taking anything away from the 7DII because it will attract more budget minded shooters. The jury is out on the high ISO results.
