Sorry to hear of your loss.

My understanding of the insurance in the U.S. is as follows. If you are a professional photographer such that you have a business (LLC, etc.) that is insured, you can cover your gear under an inland marine floater or such. This type policy also allows you to cover rental equipment used for your business.

If you are a hobbyist like me, you can "list" your equipment as "scheduled personal property" on your homeowners or renters policy, for which you will pay an additional premium (based on so many $ per $100 of equipment value). The value of this listing is that the insurance company will then provide coverage for loss "away from premises". I am not sure about other homeowners insurance policies, but my insurance company will not insure rented equipment.

This may be true for some US insurance companies, but not mine. I have Allstate homeowners insurance and, for a while, I had a separate, scheduled rider for my camera equipment. But, and this is a big BUT, my Allstate rider would not cover me if I became a professional photographer. Since I have started to sell a few photos, I decided I didn't want to have to argue with Allstate over the definition of what is a professional photographer. So I got a policy through Hill and Usher, which provides much better coverage including all of my computer equipment. And best of all, it is not attached to my homeowners insurance. And, you can get coverage with them for your rental gear. It's a very comprehensive policy.

YONGNUO YNE3-RX Receiver for RT system / now available

Got hold of one of the yn-e3-rx receivers a few days ago. Could not test it yet, since i sold all my Canon 580/430EX II speedlites (and bought multiple 600eX-RT). Will try to borrow a 580EX II from a friend, so i can test the combo YN-E3-RX plus 580ex II with 5D3 and 600Ex-rt as well as canon stE3-rt as master.

Will report findings, but won't be very soon, since i am out of town currently.

5Diii Mirror box and AF sensor

So I called. They said they don't give estimates over the phone for a repair. Not sure why since, I am asking for a specific repair. Oh well. They told me to fail out the online repair form and that I would get an estimate before I sent it in for the specific repair. I filled it out. No estimate. I contacted them via email to see if I could get an idea as to what the repair would cost. They responded that they won't give me an estimate unless I send it in. Ugh!

So, I still have no idea how much it will cost. It may be more worth it to just sell it and buy another one. Oh well. Frustrating. If I get it figured out, I'll post the info in case anyone else with the same problem comes along.

Dinan Viaduct by Night

Valvebounce said:
Hi Pete.
I now see where you are coming from, I sort of get it. It is sad that people feel the need to end it all, and that does seem like a high rate.
I'm so glad you didn't take my comments too hard, I really did agonise should I say anything or not.
Thank you for explaining.

Kind regards, Graham.

Hi Peter.
A lovely shot, but it have to say my eye is drawn straight to the construction fencing with hazard tape around the tree, to me this causes a fight with the rest of the scene, as in it is a fight to see the beauty, as you don't have the whole viaduct in the shot could you have cropped in a bit to loose it, or perhaps change it to a widescreen aspect ratio to loose the foreground?
Let me be clear about this, I'd love to have taken this shot, it is good, and I know you are stuck with stuff like the fence when it is there. You have always seemed to be in a different league from me, you set your bar so high, and this one seems to just dip a little below your usual standard, and I mean that in the nicest way.

Cheers, Graham.

Never fear to critique my output. I always appreciate it when someone is offering a valid point of view. If you said, just ......."awesome" I really would be offended. :0)

Ps, know that I really wrestled with whether to post such a comment.

This viaduct is always beautifully lit. Located in Dinan in Bretagne. Railings have been fitted to try to stem the number of suicides by local youths (averages 1 per month, sadly)

Hi Graham, I appreciate your full and frank comment. I understand where you are coming from. I rarely remove street furniture etc from my photos simply because they are part of the landscape at that moment in time.

In this case, I thought that the uprights in the roadworks echo'd the viaduct supports and the hazard bar matched the new barriers atop the viaduct. Consider the story of the beauty of the viaduct and the dark history of frequent suicides. The photo (for me) is also a ting and yang. You see the beauty.....then the pimple.

Thanks for stopping by to comment, I really do appreciate it.

Of course I'm scared for the high risk of wallet anorexia :) I mean I have already the 5DS R and the 11-24mm on my radar...
LOL!!! Mine is already thin and weak from the 11-24 f/4... I have found that credit cards are good for fattening up the wallet, but they aren't quite the same as feeding it a high quality diet of cash ;D

You made me laugh ;D

Even if I don't do architectural / landscape photography much I still want that lens :D So now I officially envy you :P
I took a look at your portfolio, so now the envy is mutual!

Pixma MG7150 - not printing some colours

Hi all,
don't know if anyone can help here - we have had said printer for less than 18 months - after 13 months (ie just out of warranty) it started to not print some colours (Magenta, Cyan), as evidenced with a nozzle test print.
I got to recover then with a couple of "Deep Cleans", which seemed to use up half a tank of ink!
It's now gone again, so I'm wondering just how dead this printer is. Have tried another Deep Clean but without any improvement.
I've looked through several of the posts on here about other models of printers, and have ascertained that infrequent use of a printer can cause the tanks/nozzles to dry out, which may be what's happening here, and also that it could be a Good Thing to not turn a printer off, to stop it going through the inordinately long startup/cleaning routines, which could be contributing to the vanishing ink issue.
So.. does anyone know of a way that I can get the printer doing its thang properly again? Is there some ninja cleaning trick that could help out?
We've been using 3rd party ink - is there any evidence to suggest that that might clog/dry any worst than genuine Canon ink?
At wit's end..
Cheers,
Marlon

7d mark II AF calibration issues - Would you send it in?

There is also a factor that the shutter and mirror slap causes some camera movement. This may not be apparent in the 70d due to shutter design.

Just as you noticed one shot seemed to work fine out of the box but servo was not working. Canon replaced the mirror box and AF sensor on my 7d2 and the results now are just a good as with my 5d3.

I can shoot at lower shutter speeds in drive mode but I find I have to keep IS enabled in any mode in order to reduce the effects of shutter and mirror slap. Quiet mode helps in this regard where you don't need 10fps.

How is this possible with this crap Canon sensors/bodies, Sony is soooo much better in every way... ;)

Why haven't you switched - serious question, not a cheap shot. Cost or does canon offer some benefits such as range of lenses that does not?

Or should I read you smily face as a wink?

Yes, I was joking. It was sarcasm.
Seriously, I'm really satisfied with my Canon gear. Not even thinking switching.

I had a chance to shoot from the field for a Canada vs. Puerto Rico game. Like most sports in Puerto Rico, it's played at night. The 7DII did very well.
Those are some nice photos. I especially like the second and the last photo in the first series. Nice result for 3200iso and 1/1000. The sigma is doing great. I see you switched between that one and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. Is the sigma to heavy to handheld the whole game? Or did you use a monopod?

Thanks! The Sigma has been great, but the OS is giving me problems. It is jumpy, and I was not using it here. (the OS)

This was my first soccer game in a while, and I wanted to try some different options. I was using the Sigma on a monopod, and prefer this for any heavy lens. At halftime I went back to the car, swapped the Sigma for my trusty 400 and 70-200. After thinking about it, I've come to realize both options are great. The Sigma is a great range for the middle 50% of the field, this also let's you use your 2nd body on something shorter for close to the goal photos.

The traditional 400 & 70-200 combo is longer and wider, but much less portable.

Canon EOS 5DS/5DSR shipping earlier than previously expected?

Just noticed some updated language on Adorama's website for the 5DS/5DSR cameras when clicking the "learn more" link under the Pre-Order information.

"Pre Order Now: Manufacturer will start shipping this item on 06/05/2015. Orders will be filled on a first come first serve basis. We do not charge your card until actually ship the item to you."

Thoughts?

Best locations to shoot in Scottish Highlands?

To some extent it depends where you will be staying and what time of year you are visiting. You are right to not consider Skye if you are travelling for one day to and from the Central Belt - you will spend most of the time in the car rather than out with a camera. Having only one day doesn't really enable you to see the best of the Highlands, but, depending on where you start it should be possible to find somewhere.

The weather in Scotland can be very unreliable, so I would suggest having at least Plans A, B and C if you want to increase your chances of having weather conducive to anything other than intimate details of streams. I have not been terribly impressed by Loch Lomond for photography so far. There is the lone tree at Milarrochy Bay, but there tend to be lots of people around the Loch so I prefer to head further north/west. Glencoe can be fantastic in the right weather, but in the summer I find the midges unbearable and there have been times when it has been so closed in that all I have seen is the road. The same can be true of Rannoch Moor. On a few occasions I have done the trip through Glencoe and Fort William and along the Road to the Isles (towards Mallaig) for a bit of variety - I do it in a day, but it needs lots of hours of daylight. The Cairngorm mountains tend to be more rounded than those on the West Coast and I find them more challenging to photograph. If the weather is horrible in the West there are places like the Linn of Dee and Glen Doll where you can access the mountains.

PowerShot G17 Mentioned Again [CR2]

I bought the G16 because I think it is the last of a kind - and I just had to have it. Call it a kind of nostalgia or GAS or whatever. It may not be a perfect camera but it does have a unique and classic set of features, one of which is the optical viewfinder, and another is the relatively tiny sensor that definitely has its shortcomings but does allow for a reasonably compact optical package (despite the somewhat more bulky body).

So far I have used it very little to be honest - more due to circumstance and the luxury problem of owning too many good camera's than anything else- but I plan to bring it as a backup camera for an upcoming trip to China. Also I might use it to shoot some travel video on that trip.

Anyway I'm happy I bought it at the time but to be sure it's a bit of a dinosaur and if Canon brings out a G17 with the same sort of general specification and feature set (a G17 would logically follow the evolutionary -rather than revolutionary- development of the G** series), well then I would be *really* surprised.

Hey, wouldn't you folks trim the quotes to what you really wish to answer? It would make reading the posts so much more enjoyable!

For two reasons, first, it maintains context, I hate it when people partial quote and deliberately completely misrepresent what you actually wrote, just like photonius quoting my my partial comment "This is not a fair comparison" then ripping me apart in saying that isn't the point of the website, I know that! But it was the point of the initial linked comparison about which we are talking and that the poster has subsequently agreed is not correct and not a fair comparison. And second, I kinda like to see how far the nesting will go ;D it seems like they go into a black hole of quotes!

Also, I gave up with photonius, I expect most other people can see the error of using those two samples as a comparison of diffraction, all those that don't have their head up their butts and confuse pixel density with enlargement anyway.

Thinking of a new body, want your opinions

Zv said:
The 5D MkIII should hold its value well as will the 7D MkII but only because it's still really new. I reckon the 5 series just ages better! I had my 5D MkII for two years and sold it very quickly and easily for just $200 less than what I originally paid. My 7D lost me $300 + and took ages to sell.

Getting a 5D MkIII now is a great idea as they have come down in price but not so drastically. When the MkIV is announced there will be a fair amount of people looking to buy used MkIII's and I'll be one of them. The demand will be there so no need to worry if you have to upgrade quickly.

I hate to throw a wrench into the discussion, but I was just perusing eBay... and a 1Div looks to be a blend of the 5Diii and 7Dii.... 1.3x crop, 10fps, 16mp (seems enough to me on the fuji x100s I have) Anyone have any thoughts on the 1D iv? Used ones on ebay are like $1600... fits right between the 5D and 7D pricewise too. Only thing I wouldn't be looking forward to is the added weight/size... but then again I have the fuji when I want something small to carry around...
