I do documentary work and I'm using a 5D3 system for low light / shallow DOF and a Sony PXW-X70 for general purpose / fast response. The Sony FS7 / A7s combo is not much more than the 5D3 / C100 combo, but looks like it might perform a lot better. There's a lot of new stuff coming out, and I may end up just adding a 70D (for the dual pixel AF) and waiting another year to decide what to change.

The 70D is really good bang for buck. Paired with the 18-135 IS STM, it's a pretty good system with dual pixel AF. As long as you're ok with dual sound (when needed), this is not a terrible decision by any means.

You also have to be OK with substandard IQ.

Best bang for the buck comes from Panasonic/Sony/Samsung, not Canon.

70D has the only AF system that can reliably focus on a face unattended during video. This is very helpful when doing interviews without a crew. Also I have 8 Canon lenses that are immediately useful on a 70D. Switching systems is a big deal, but I can probably add a 70D on sale for less than $800.

Which explains why everyone uses a 70D to shoot video......oh wait....they don't....in fact almost no one uses it. Except those who bought it as a stills camera and don't see a need for getting a capable video camera on the assumption that whatever they have is good enough.

I know a professional crew that shoots music videos with one.

They actually do, many video professionals use the 70D. I mean MANY. It's because of the Canon video DSLR reputation (60D successor) and because it's the only large sensor video camera with usable AF, that's until the 7D mkII came out (which has no aliasing, better lowlight, but removes the touch-to-focus and swivle LCD.

Anyway, having the DPAF technology only the 70D (which has bad video quality vs the rest) is a frustrating situation. Give me a good video image with DPAF damn it!

They tried doing that by coupling dpaf with the C100/300 but, they made it only work in a center focus point, 90% useless compared to the real ground-breaking DPAF concept in the MUCH cheaper 70D... Weird isn't it? no, it's Canon ;)

I Agree with the C100 mk II issue. If it had full sensor DPAF, I would buy it for sure. This would give me enormous relief when trying to conduct an interview without a cameraman! People who scoff at AF for video are out to lunch and have never had to work alone, or with a stabilizer rig

Best place to sell gear?

I usually list on Craigslist first, but the buyers seem to expect a steep discount. Then, I list on ebay at a fixed price. The fees are lower for fixed price items, but Paypal gets you. You do get more by selling on ebay, so that can be a partial compensation.

Prices on FM tend to be a little lower than ebay prices and you still have to pay a big fee to Paypal.

Selling to a dealer is a last resort, I've never had to do it.

Canon 7d2 with 100-400 ii or 1dx with 100-400 ii + 1.4ex iii. Which has better IQ?

I shot both of these this week in my backyard using 7DMk.II + 1.4 Mk.II extender
with my first generation 100-400mm f-4.5/5.6L IS. The "birds" I usually photograph
are more often powered with jet/inline or radial engines and have at least one pilot
on-board! I however think that these show the potential for the setup you're considering.
Whatever your choice happy shooting. Edit I should have mentioned that these are NOT
crops simply converted from RAW to JPEG and sized to fit NO other post work was done

Magic Lantern Update for 5D3.123

Quote a1ex at Magic Lantern:
Alright folks, full-res silent pictures are now in nightly builds, finally!

The main limitation remains: you can only do fairly long exposures, but even so, it's a very powerful tool for timelapses. You will need a ND filter for daylight usage.

Check the full-res silent picture thread for more details, and please don't complain about overexposure issues.

This feature also comes with major backend changes on the photo RAW backend (for example, at least in theory, tools like ETTR and RAW exposure feedback should be a lot more consistent on 6D and 600D)
Obviously, this is not just for 5D3.

I can't see any obvious use for my photography.

I put in an order for the 5DS R, and one of the things that I plan to do is use it hand-held at 1600 iso to take photos of paintings in museums (so I can zoom in on detail, like how an eye was painted, etc). I'm also a painter.

Is it unreasonable to think that I could get photos as sharp as I do with a hand held 7D with a 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens? Or does the increased mp also demand a tripod (which is something that can't be used, at say, the MET). Reading about the new mirror vibration control system is making me think that maybe it will be very hard to use this hand held indoors.

Would a slight shake be magnified as mp increase?

- Trevor

Increased mp never demands greater steadiness. Mp doesn't increase the degree of blur that results from unsteadiness. However, increased enlargement demands greater steadiness. So the question is whether you will be making bigger prints or viewing the images larger.
Hi,
High MP will make unsteadiness more obvious especially there is a button call "100%"... :'(

Have a nice day.

The amount that you need to increase stability is proportional to pixel pitch.

Only if you are going to view at unequal magnifications, if you view both outputs at the same subject size (which you should) there is no difference.

Fare Thee Well 135mm L

135L isn't a very versatile lens and i've even had to rent a 70-200LII when I needed one.My main gripe with the 135L is the lack of IS which still makes me ponder a 70-200mm of some version and I've rented it when I knew I'd need it.

I bought the 135L primarily for one reason... in door sports. Basketball, some volleyball... stuff like that. Give me an extra stop of light... and I shoot around 1/500th of a second, so IS is irrelevant. If I was shooting at 1/50th of a second... then yes... not the lens for me... but the iso is what it is... and I live with it and fix it in post.
If it had IS, I'd never want for a 70-200mm for slower shutter speeds and I won't part with my 135L for the f/2. It be the ideal tele if it had both for me.

At least in common English usage and certain literary genres, the term 'member' generally refers to a specific appendage present on only one gender, and I would strongly prefer to not have mine 'deleted'. :o

Wait, you combined 'choking' with 'member'?

And the thread continues its death spiral! LOL! You are funny man!

Lenses to Washington DC?

"Taking a trip down to Washington DC for Easter Weekend...Cherry Blossoms"

be prepared for no or very limited blossoms... I had snow falling on my bike ride today, spring seems to be late this year. As for lenses 24-70mm & 70-200mm would be my suggestion. IMHO DC is best photographed with longer lenses to compress all the boring space in between objects. I almost never take a wide down to the mall anymore.

Having lived here for many years last year was the first year I really went down to photograph the blossoms (over many days) - I could not believe what a mad scene it is, I say this because my humble advice is to pack as light as possible. Of course I'm a tripod person so I always carry one of those.

Just because you're coming from the North don't think it's warm down here to forget some light gloves and warm jacket for the early morning stuff. Plus the monuments are pretty cool (pun:-) in the night time as well. And plan on using the metro, not parking a car near the Tidal Basin.

hope this helps

Question about AI-Servo mode in Canon 7D

fishprof said:
I assume one possibility is that I am moving the camera slightly from one exposure to the next within a burst.

That would be my guess, and I'm not entirely sure how well IS and monopod combine in any case (do you have a IS mode 2 on your lenses?).

The second point you're probably mistaken about is the effect of IS: it generates "ok" pictures vs. bare handheld, but for full sharpness w/o being lucky you need higher shutter speeds or a sturdy tripod. IS always introduces some jitter, and shots are never the same.

fishprof said:
If that is the case, does the camera try to refocus for each exposure within a burst or is it locking exposure when I first depress the AF-ON button and retaining that same focus during the entire burst?

It's called one-shot mode for a reason - the focus setting on the lens stays the same when servo is off.

fishprof said:
Should I be using AI-Focus mode for this kind of work rather than AI-Servo?

AI Focus mode is a gimmick, don't expect the camera to detect when a subject is moving or not.

fishprof said:
Should I be using AI- Am I making this more complicated than it really is?

Imho these shots are simply complicated, you best bet is to burst and refocus a few times, then pick the best exposure.

70-200mm 2.8L Non is mk. 1 vs 70-200mm 2.8L IS Mk. 2

While I have not used either, I have read many times the mk 2 is superior in almost every way.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=687&Camera=453&FLI=2&API=0&LensComp=242&Sample=0&CameraComp=453&Go.x=11&Go.y=10&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

This is a fantastic tool. Check out the CA on the mk 1, and how much sharper the mk 2 is.

Speculation on 5D III vs 5D IV, 1DX vs 1DX II, 5D IV vs 1DX? etc.

IMHO, either 2 things are going to happen...

5D4 will come this year without 4K (huge outrage amongst videographers if this happens).
Or
5D4 comes next year or even the year after with 4K.

My reasoning behind number 1, recent price drop of 1DC. No grey market model, straight out of the stable @ $7999 (USD). I don't think they are going to create a separate line that is a Cinema DSLR, going forward.
They will still create Cinema cameras, just not DSLR form factor that is so close to their other EOS cameras.
Going back to price drop, if you look at the Canon 1DC's price history (http://www.canonpricewatch.com/product/03900/Canon-EOS-1D-C-price.html), there is a year where after a price drop it remained constant throughout the year (without any sales). I believe this year its going to remain stable @ $7999 (USD) without any sales too (again, see price history).

I strongly believe that they are going to keep it like this and knowing that if people are waiting for the 5D4 for 4K, they are either going to be upset or they are going to wait.

I am sure that they value their customers, existing and future customers. But I believe that they value current customers more over future ones, because they don't want people to buy something like the 1DC (this year @ $7999) only to be obsolete the next year with the 5D4. People will always think about waiting for the next best thing. But then, you can be waiting forever, not doing anything productive.

They just announced the 5DS/5DSR, only to please the high resolution crowd; they just instilled confidence in Canon fans that they will release future 5D products. Their 5D3 is still selling, what is the hurry to release the 5D4??? People that are waiting can afford to wait, obviously they don't have any real projects on the way, else they would buy our 5D3, right? Or there should be a huge leap in sales in the a7s or gh4, right?

EDITTED TO ADD: If there is either another price drop or another sale (for the 1DC) that happens within the next couple of months, then I would believe that may be they are trying to get rid of inventory and so 5D4 will come with 4K.

Question, Sir/ Madam-600 EX-RT , 90 EX, and ST-E3-RT

neuroanatomist said:
The ST-E3-RT has only RF control so can only control 600EX-RT flashes.

The 90EX has only optical control so can control any Canon flash with slave capability (270EX II up to 600EX).

The 600EX-RT has both optical and RF control, but can't use them simultaneously.

Thousand Thanks, Dear Great Teacher Mr. neuroanatomist
Well, In This Case, I might buy 90EX to use as Master Flash---And I will not bring Heavy Phottix Odin with 4 Receivers Just For when I use only EOS-M, and 2 More Old Canon Flashes 550 EX, and 580 EXII.
Thanks again, Sir.
Have a great Weekend.

Brand new Sony patent shows Curved Sensor FF camera with 35mm lens (and some var

Mt Spokane Photography said:
I thought they were selling them for cell phones. aybe phase 2 is for large sensor cameras. I think they allow a cheap fixed lens that has no corrections to be used.

Sony's sensor sales is for far more than consumer cameras, they see cameras as devices to be used everywhere. Cars, homes, appliances lots of future applications.
Agreed!

This is a game changer for fixed focus cameras. Cell phones, web cams, security cameras (non-zooming), and probably dozens of other functions would be greatly simplified with the simple, uncorrected, lenses that could be used with this.

Even with cameras that zoom, it would mean that not as much correction was needed and lenses could be made a bit simpler...

For the DSLR world, with lenses spanning 100X range, it's a bit of a non-starter as the task would be far more difficult and there is the momentum of legacy optics to overcome.
