Is Panasonic about to enter the fixed lens full-frame camera space?

There is very close collaboration between Leica and Panasonic for digital cameras: (1) they are both part of L-mount, (2) the Q3 and SL3's AF software is basically the same as Panasonic's -- down to how the AF target boxes look, and (3) the Summilux 28mm f/1.7 on the Q/2/3 is actually patented by Panasonic (https://patents.google.com/patent/US20160266350A1/en)

I won't be surprised if an upcoming Pansonic FF compact is based off the Q3 with a different sensor.

CIPA Results for March 2024

Sony compact cameras don't sell well in Japan.
In 2023, Canon was no.1, no.2 was Kodak and OM was no.3.

Here is april selling

Canon can sell more if they release the new model but I think they don't have any resources to do.

Where to find electronic shutter on a 1Dx Mk 3 ?

The 1DXIII is enough to scare any bird.
;) ;) That’s why my 1D X was perfect for BIF. Approach silently from upwind. Focus and start shooting. The machine-gun shutter startles the perched bird, which then takes off into the wind right toward me. With the R3, I have to yell or stomp my foot and it’s much less effective. ;) ;)

What mirrorless body replaces the 1DX?

Great advice. I couldn’t figure out where the R3 fit in the lineup. I have a lot of very nice EF glass and planned to get the new R5 when it comes out and use a converter. Kind of wondering if I should go with the R1 instead. Mostly shoot kids sports, parties, and family portraits. i do want at least one mirrorless body with the newer technology. well, actually i want more, but $$$$. Thank you for your responses.

TAMRON announces development of first CANON RF mount lens

wow, I wonder how this compares to the 10-20 f4...
Well, Tamron makes a pretty good lens. I still have an Tamron EF 45mm f/2.8. The problem is that in bright sunlight the CA is horrible at f/2.8. To me, that makes it less of a lens.

Canon has spoiled and ruined me.

Canon releases firmware updates for 5 telephoto RF lenses

Dawn is too early for me too (unless it is too late :D ) but dusk is a good time. There are so many opinions and as long as we are civilized at each other all is well. In fact Alan is not only civilized but very helpful too. He has made great suggestions to me (Also, Neuro always responds to technical/gear questions).

I feel more comfortable with my D850 + 500mm PF (my goto lens especially for flight photos and ones that demand quick response).

If I can carry more I get my R7 + 100-500 and R5 with 14-35. I also used to use R5 + 100-500 + 2X for the very distant targets. 100-500 is a phenomenally sharp lens.

I wonder about Z8/600PF combo but it is rather expensive and it would compete with D850/500PF. Choices...

Canon Patent Application: Another APS-C Dual Fisheye

I would love to see an APS-C version of this lens, or even mu43 (except canon isn't in that market).

If you've played with Stereoscopic VR180, it's a game changer. With this, you can make really immersive environments similar to what the Apple Vision Pro is offering. The realm is still in its infancy, but I see it as a great subset to what's currently being offered on Youtube.

The main challenge for me is that dual lens VR180 gear is either very potato (Insta360/Calf 3D) or very huge (R5C w/ Dual Fisheye, or even bigger). Something lighter and travel size that would fit on a portable gimbal would be so lovely esp when traveling to South East Asia and Japan visiting temple sites etc.

240408 solar eclipse (totality)

Part 3. My 3rd rig for the eclipse was my R5+RF100-500 at 500mm. I used this rig to get the best extended corona detail during totality.

Photo 1. Is the corona as opened in ACR.
Photo 2. The same image is processed with some HDR magic to bring out details of magnetic field lines and loops.
Photo 3. Close up of corona using rig 2 (R7+200-800mm) as opened in ACR.
Photo 4. Same image as in 3. but again, with HDR processing to show off some cool structures in the near Corona and Chromosphere.Corona PS crop CR5_168868 copy.jpgCorona HDR PS crop CR5_168868 copy.jpgCorona PS crop sm CR7_080768 copy.jpgCorona HDR PS crop sm CR7_080768 copy.jpg

The Sad Truth About Canon's Future?

I can understand this mentality looking at the past but things change. Sure when I bought my first DSLR 20 years ago it had a kit lens zoom and I had no idea what f/2.8 was. But I also didn't have a smartphone with 3 lenses and an f/1.8 in my pocket. The smartphones are now advertising low f stop values and have a portait mode to fake even lower f stop values.
At least two things haven't changed since then: the notion of being good enough for the job and the desire of telemarketers to sell stuff people don't really need.

Nowadays if you go on Youtube and look up reviews for cameras (where most beginners are going to start today), pretty much all the reviewers are recommending specifally
But at least one thing has changed: now telemarketers are able to specifically target their victims based on the victim's search and view history.

The day the Canon Grinch stole the OS/VC

Well said but Neuro your equipment EOS R3 + 28-70 2.0 is heayvy enough to be a stabilizing force in itself and based on how long you are taking pictures you can probably hold 1/20 of a second with good results.
But somehow I assume that the typical R10 Customer who upgrades from the (stabilized) cheapo kit lens to a 17-50 Tamron would apreciate any aditional VC
I wonder how many people moving from the optically stablized f4.5-6.3 kit lens to these faster lenses without stabilization will notice. I like tripods, but I know I'm not everyone.

12:20 am Pacific-Time - May 7, 2024 -- Insane Rumour About Sony Merging With Microsoft!

My Washington State rumour source is making some waves that a hardware supplier agreement is now in the works between Sony and Microsoft to supply image sensor hardware for tablets, desktops and SMARTPHONES plus a Microsoft branded high megapixel count Sony A7-series body with 3D LIDAR/SONAR scanning built-in to be used for 3D AR/VR production.

Looks like Microsoft Hololens may be redone into a cheaper high resolution Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality ecosystem to counter Apple's Vision Pro system. 8K VR Headsets for $1400 USD is what is being bandied about by my source and $500 to $800 USD at 4K/6K resolutions for low to mid-range options.

A patent exchange and major Azure Cloud software licencing agreement is also being completed between Sony and Microsoft but no major details on that yet!

Sony Outreach to Sigma About Buying Foveon Technology and super-lightweight OEM lenses!

Since it's now after NAB 2024, my rumour mill electronics engineering source in Singapore, is now saying that INDEED Sony has made an outreach to Sigma for producing cheaper prime and zoom lenses under an OEM/ODM agreement for various Sony DSLR camera models. Priced below G-Master models they will be midrange lens products and it is likely that the first set will be coming out in 2nd quarter 2025.

My source had no further information on Sigma Foveon image sensor technogy being bought by Sony for eventual resale to Apple for iPhone/iPad but that does not mean it isn' happening.

It just means he has no further information.

We do know however than On Semiconductor and Canon are getting a look-see at becoming suppliers to Apple for 64+ megapixel image sensors! Apple it putting enormous pressure on Sony to get better image sensors at better prices for inclusion into Apple products!

I would not be surprised to see some sort of OEM/ODM product agreement announcement sometime between June to October 2024. Sony has to do SOMETHING in order to NOT LOSE SUCH a big image sensor customer as Apple!

Canon releases a full frame 19MP Global shutter sensor to Market

I've downloaded R3 samples and a9iii samples, it's not even close, completely disagree with you. As so many other reviews I've seen as well. What on earth are you talking about?
The A9III seems just to be awful in IQ.
Sony propaganda and marketing won't change and won't hide the reality : this first global shutter sensor has a Bad Dynamic and awful noise !

I would be curious about the sales of this camera...I expect it's only a success for Youtubers, but it's a miss for sales !

The truth about Sony is beginning to be shown : a lot of marketing promises...and a lot of lies ! Last examples : the firmwares for A1 and A7SIII, promised to be major MAJOR ones, are just a disaster ! They créateur problèmes and bugs on cameras ! And the improvements are ... tiny.

Meet Insta360 X4: Delivering 8K 360 for Unmatched Creative Possibility

Have the x2 and will get the x4. Its a fun camera. Incredibly easy to use. Super easy to tag along for casual footage, water shots, rides and funny family stills. Stabilization is unbelievable. Editing has a learning curve, but software has improved.

I used a X2 for a year, was great! However I felt it was lacking in low light performance (which I needed).

The software was good, but pretty sure it's improved a lot since. Many users, more R&D budget. Insta360 did a stellar job with this line-up imho. Easy to use, lots of power-features to make your life easy. Wish Canon would invest in similar ways in their software suite, which feels dated and clunky by comparison.

The Canon PowerShot V10 Mark II rumored for Q4 of 2024

The pocket 3 is one drop away from being useless.
Pretty much every gimbal is fragile.
Despite the name, I would not carry a Pocket 3 in my pocket.
The Pocket 3 still has its uses but that is one of my main attractions to the V10.
My biggest gripe about the Pocket 3 is that it has a fixed aperture.
