Could you explain to me which 24-70mm lens has less distortion?

Hjalmarg1 said:
Can anyone with a good understanding of MTF charts and actual field experience share how the three 24-70mm lenses compares to each other in terms of distortion (especially at wide end)? I have been using the 24-70mm f2.8L I for more than 4 years but sometimes borders sharpness and distortion particularly at the wide end annoy me so, I would like to know if the 24-70mm f/2.8L II or the 24-70mm f4L IS offer more controlled distortion.

Most appreciated!

Why does this minor metric matter so much to you? It won't make a good or bad photo any better or worse? It's easily corrected with one click in Lightroom. Are you looking to justify a new lens purchase? If so...go and buy it and enjoy but don't think it will change your photography much! It'll just give you something new to play with. The photos will be the same, according to your luck and talent. New gear doesn't equal better photos.

mini review: Yongnuo 568EX

You, Sir, are the most gracious member of this board! It is my pleasure to attempt answering your question, but I'm afraid I have just confirmed that the Phottix and Yongnuo are not compatible...

T approximately $40 each, the YN-622C trigger/transceiver is a most wonderful addition to the 568EX II. And now I see that the 568 EX II is down to approximately $120, making possible a complete radio triggered "580 EX" flash for $165, approximately. extraordinary.

The SX60 is capable of extremely sharp shots but there seem to be a lot of bad copies and a lot with intermittently jumpy IS. Some IS systems have apparently cleared up with time. Try it with the IS off on a steady rest or tripod to see if this is the problem you're having.

The SX50 had no such trouble.

What is the IS please Lee Jay? Sorry, sussed it, cheers

Canon EOS 6D Firmware 1.1.6 Released

aalbert said:
Did the 1.6 firmware upgrade (from 1.3)… Now when I go to restore my AFMA numbers via FoCal, the camera is no longer seen. I have tried 2 different computers, using 2 different USB cables, and 3 different apps (FoCal, ShutterCount, EOS Utility) to get it to connect, but no luck.

Anybody else experience anything similar? Anyway to troubleshoot the USB system?

Did the same upgrade. Working fine with my Macs.

Patent: Plastic/Resin Mount for DSLRs

From the wording, I'd guess that a similar patent for the lens side is on its way.

I would hope so. I'd expect metal-on-plastic to have a serious wear problem, because of the extreme difference in material hardness.

+1

Metal has no problem sliding on plastic, but using a existing lens and mount which may already have some damage would certainly scratch the plastic surface, and even new metal lens mounts can get scratched and dinged.

I'd expect to see this on the new mirrorless camera and lenses series as a way of cutting costs. The lens adaptor to EF mounts can then be replaceable if any damage occurs.

S120 Successor?

I doubt there will be a S130. Seems 1 inch sensors are the new high end compact. I mean who is going to get a S130 when the size difference between it and the GX7 is negligable,

It's not negligible when you have to put it in your pocket! I was going to buy an S120 but I found it slightly too big for my pocket.

True. Everybody has different sized pockets so negligible to one is too much for another.

Any idea on new 45 a and 90TSE

On July 11, of 2013, the Forum admin posted that updated 45 and 90mm tilt-shifts were likely in 2014 based on his source(s).

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about these updates? I am so wanting a 45 TSE updated and constructed like the my 24-TSE M2.

(There had been a post in CR late fall'of 2013 suggesting a 45Mk2 TSE was likely due by late spring of 2014. When no word of this lens surfaced by summer, I hoped it would unveil at Photokina. But no such luck.)

Thanks for any insights.

samyang 12mm / 16mm experiences. Ef-m generally.

thanks for the input, the aps-c point was never up for discussion, I find 5d's horrible to shoot with, the 5d2 was too wobbly, the 5d3 too soft, and if you want to shoot interviews the reduced dof is impossible to work with, I find, but thanks for the affirmation.

Warming to the m idea. I'll decide whether to buy another couple and dedicate them to ML just for timelapse...

The 4k thing. Yep. I had a z1 for 4 years before anybody asked me for HD (Thank god, as the z1 wasn't really HD) and had moved onto xdcamhd eng's by then... I'm holding fire on it for now, as I just don't understand where people are watching it (never fully bought the 1080 cropping argument especially for line skipping cameras)

Thanks for the SJBR's so far.

Cost to repair image stabilization on 70-200 f2.8L IS II

East Wind Photography said:
Actually having torn a couple similar lenses apart. It takes a considerable amount of time to diagnose the problem, tear it down, replace the bad module, then reassemble the elements...keeping it all clean...then recollimating the optics again. It's not something you can just replace like a set of spark plugs.

I think 400.00 to fix it is quite reasonable for employing someone as specialized as they are to do it right. I personally would not attempt it even if I had a great YouTube video showing me how. The specialized tools and knowledge to do it correctly would cost more than the repair.

Unreasonable? Perhaps not. But the labor market isn't that different between Canada and the U.S. (in part because it is relatively easy for workers to move back and forth between them), so I'd expect the labor cost to be about the same (unless Canon put their repair center in the middle of Silicon Valley).

Backlit subject focus problems with 300 2.8 II

Thanks for the input Gary - if nothing else it makes me feel better that I am not being completely incompetent. I guess it is just something that even the big whites struggle with. I have tried all the suggestions above and I'm still not getting anything better than a 10% hit rate (if that). For what its worth I also used to avoid any sort of backlighting but now believe that when done well it can produce more impressive and striking images than any front-lit subject.

Voyeurism

yorgasor said:
What I like about the "voyerism" style of photos is that the photographer isn't influencing the person being photographed. You're catching the person as they really are, they're not posing for you. People get self conscious when you point a camera right at them, whether they know you or not.

This one, I wasn't sitting 5 feet away from this woman, on the steps on a river bank in Singapore. I had the camera set up on a tripod and I used live view to set up the composition and focus (I was using a 40 yr old 180mm Nikon on my 5D3), but I made as if I was just tinkering with the camera, never getting into a position behind the camera where a normal photographer would be taking a picture.
Great shots! I especially like the first one. As you pointed out, if the subjects had been aware you were taking a picture, you would not have gotten these terrific, candid pictures.

Nicely captured none-the-less.

I know. Disappointing huh.
I did not feel any disappointment - since I don't know French ;)

French is easy. On my travels, I've only needed three phrases:

je ne parle pas francais
parlez vous anglais
voulez vous coucher avec moi

Learn those and you're golden.
Looks like I am half way there! I know #2. I figured out #1. And don't laugh! I shall soon Google #3 and I will be golden! :P

400 f/2.8L II IS on sunny days and white jerseys

Well, to be honest with you guys, I'm not sure. I haven't had any events where I've needed it yet :-[

On the other hand I have a later development. I noticed with the SAME camera my 70-200 f/2.8L II IS lens has been front-focusing in basketball. Could be a problem with the camera and that is on its way to Canon.

I shot some night soccer with the 400 lens after I got it back and it worked fine; had no focus errors but that wasn't in bright sunny light where I had had trouble.

Now though, it could have been the camera all along. We'll see, the story continues.

By the way, I have a 2nd 1Dx where I keep the other lens but upon trying both cameras, the front-focusing problems have all been on the one particular camera.
