Gotta be patient...

The dream to shoot under 80 still there... ::)

My golf and bowling scores are identical. 110 is good, right?

As for guns, is the EF 1200mm the Barrett .50?

About a decade ago I traded an HK USP .45 for a 300D. In retrospect it was a horrible financial decision. I gave up a value sustaining chunk of metal, and started throwing good money after bad trying to take pictures without film. What was I thinking?

Speedlight help

neuroanatomist said:
Glad it's sorted.

@RLP, the assist beam works in One Shot whether AF is assigned to the shutter release, a back button, or both.

Edit: I don't recall if the AF assist works in AI Focus mode, and I can't check since the 1-series don't have that option.

I use AI Focus and the beam works in that mode. So AI Servo is a no-go in that regard. Thanks for your help! :-)

How do I improve this picture?

In case are still interested in comments.
The instant I looked at it, the song Kingston Town by UB40, popped into my head...
But now, I'm humming, Kiss The Rain by Billie Myers.

Personally, I never add things to an image. I think it is dishonest.

It is a great image, I really like it. It is full of soul, imo...
Thank you. I thought so too as I shot it. However, I thought it needed a bit more punch.

Weak Yen Spurs Canon To Bring Production Home

The weaker Yen is probably the prices of new 7Dii/16-35/100-400 lenses have been lower than expected. I hope the next wave of new FF cameras follow this trend.

I don't think it is that simple.

While there are lots of details involved, from a high level, exchange rates are a huge factor in price increases or drops. Canon, like many companies sells cameras to foreign distributors in their native currency (YEN). The US dollar and to some extent, the Canadian dollar have become very strong against most other currencies. That means that US buyers can import items for a much lower price in US dollars.

Gray market sellers of Canon gear have jumped on this and buy equipment from dealers around the world at greatly reduced prices, and sell them on ebay.

This puts pressure on Canon to drop their US prices. There is a gap in value between the US Dollar and Canadian dollar that lets US buyers save on purchases from Canada in many cases as well.

Hot shoe mod for monolights

I recently discovered a way to temporarily modify my Canon hot shoe that allowed my Canon ST-E2 transmitter to fire my Bowens monolights in synch with the Canon flashes. When covering all 4 small connectors on the hot shoe this disabled the Ettl pre flash and the monolights synced perfectly. Problem was the ST-E2 transmitter would time out and wouldn’t awaken with the shutter button, or wireless remote. This proved unacceptable. By trial and error I discovered that covering the ( left rear connector ) as your holding the camera the hot shoe problem was solved.

CR Admins: New Ad Block on CR Home Page needs to be REMOVED!

I forgot all about turning it off until you said that!

Note that I didn't state that I'm running and adblocker (though there are ways of detecting it) :-> ... it was just a theoretical possibility. Remember: Superheros always watch ads and buy products by clicking on affiliate links :-p

RustyTheGeek said:
Now I feel really bad for anyone not running an Ad Blocker.

Reminds me of the poker wisdom: "If after 10 minutes you don't know who the sucker is, it's you".

I don't mind Ads until they cause a significant impact on the site's core function/purpose. Then they are counter productive and drive people AWAY from the site. If I had to scroll down every time I visited the CR Main Page to see what I wanted, I would definitely visit less because I would get tired of all the extra wasted effort simply due to a bad design choice. It sends a message that the site is more interested in free revenue (generated at my expense) than providing a good user experience.

Samyang/Rokinon vs. straight lines.

Thank you Random. From Dustin:
"The truth of the matter is that this little lens is in most ways a better, more complete version of the big brother 14mm f/2.8. It has far less distortion (which means that the extreme corners are useful), similar sharpness, and (this is a biggie) can use traditional filters in a common (and relatively inexpensive) size.

Interesting ... user of long-discontinued heavy-as-a-brick Pentax 645 medium format film camera calls massively popular digital point & shoots an "epic fail" because assembled from "out-dated" spare parts. :)

Please, dont feel intimidated by the revelation of modus operandi of many manufacturers from many different industries.
Money = Good. Spare Parts laying around = Bad.

I wish you a fantastic journey with your photography, a lifetime of great images, and more. Dont forget that Photography is a form of Self Expression, and your images are revealing.

Enjoy !

Yes, I'll enjoy, thank you. Your "revelation" was that these new cameras are somehow an "epic fail". I'll grant that perhaps you know something about out-dated spare parts at the Canon factory. But I'm not sure how that fits in with your view of photography as self expression. The "epic fail" was because one can't make expressive photos with these new cameras?

Sony is desperate, or think we are idiots?

ajfotofilmagem said:
It seems that Sony really is on the verge of bankruptcy. They had the idea to revive the Walkman in a digital version that costs 1.2 thousand U.S. dollars! :o :o

I assume that you have never compared prices between a consumer grade CD player and an audiophile CD transport, outboard DAC, power supply and connecting cables?

The Mark Levinson No 31 still commands north of $3k USD and that is over a decade old.

I have listened to a CD played through $200k in gear and cables (not my stuff, unfortunately).

At $1,200, this is nothing in the audiophile market.

Expect Higher End Products at CP+ in February

"Having a catalog of a 100 lenses means nothing if almost everyone only uses a selection of about half a dozen of those." ==> Mr. A needs 16-200mm fL. Mr. B needs 200-800mm fl. Mr. C needs TS-E lenses etc. Looks like Canon/DSLR offers much better selection for all users.

That is quite true!
I am a Mr.C who likes the TSE-17 mm so much which other brands d not have!
If they had it I would seriously think about a change of brand.

Help needed with filters for my 70D 18-135mm IS STM

I have a B+H UV filter on my 18-135 STM. For $40 I thought it was a good deal.
http://mobile.adorama.com/BW67UVM.html?utm_source=Transactional&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ShippingConfirmation&utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided

I have a Hoya CP filter that I have had for a few years. When I get the 10-18 STM lens I will probably get a nicer CP.

Enjoy the 70D. I am loving mine.

Kodak's first smartphone. Will Canon follow?

pdirestajr said:
Isn't it just some random tech company sourcing cheap crap from China and slapping the Kodak license on it? I doubt "Kodak" is doing much of anything.

I thought they went under, administrators then sold all the bits.. on going businesses, name and so on.

I know the sensor business got sold.

Who are Kodak these days?

Traveling to Europe... debating what gear to bring. DSLR or EOS M?

mangobutter said:
You guys have convinced me to take the 6D. Why not, right? I guess if anything would break, it would be a mirrorless camera versus a tank of an SLR. [...] Also it WILL be raining a lot in London so this is when I'd put the EOS M away.

Make no mistake: The 6d's weather sealing is very weak, if you shoot in rain you're gambling with your camera since the warranty doesn't cover that damage! You might be lucky, but then again you might be not - better get a rain cover or use a bag from the supermarket.

mangobutter said:
I'll bring the 50mm 1.8 for when I need a "perfectionist" shot (sharpest possible IQ).

Are you sure we're talking about the same lens :-p ... 50/1.8 and "sharpest possible iq" doesn't compute.

Surapon,

On the photo you posted of the Big White, what is mounted on the center of the lens?

It is two Frio cold shoes on his big flash bracket, with a spirit level on for good measure.

Thank you. I enjoy seeing what other people use because it helps me determine what I "need" ;D
