Red squirrels

Thanks everyone for joining this thread, very nice pictures.

I didn't know there was a red squirrel species without the fluffy ears ;D.

Since a few years there are also grey squirrels in Belgium, if I am not mistaken they are the US species and originate from animals that escaped. They are more aggressive than our own red squirrels and seem to drive back the red squirrel population.

Review: Sensor Performance of the 7D Mark II

I just received the sky watcher star adventurer product from B&H. Looks very well designed with a lot of thought going into it's usefulness. I'm impressed with the size and weight. Will be easy to travel with. The declination bracket can also hold a second ball head mount for a guiding scope and autotracker. :D

The declination bracket also has a worm type fine adjuster. I would imaging it would be fairly easy to construct a motor that would allow for some kind of declination autotracking. Though I doubt it would be needed for most digital imagery.

I haven't had a chance to take it out yet. Maybe next week. All of this is fine but if it cant track as described it's not worth anything.

A-DEP with touch screen

I never used the A-DEP mode on my T1i, but I was thinking it might be a good mode with a touch screen in live view. I can invision tapping on the subjects I want in focus on the screen and the camera selecting the largest aperture that could keep them all in focus. I wouldn't mind A-DEP being back on the mode dial if it could do that.

buying advice: 24-70 2.8 v1 or v2

Be careful with the old version. The front element goes very easily out of alignment. There are lots of bad samples around. The new version is much sturdier construction and the picture quality is a lot better.
I have had the old version now 8 years, it has been repaired many times and now it is OK again.
I am not professional so for me the quality is good enough. Otherwise, no question about it, the version II.

Canon lens firmware update.

Ineed, but unless I'm mistaken, Canon have not released user-downloadable firmware updates for any of their premium L lenses, whether they will in the future is another matter.

There's really not enough for a precedent. Only 5 lens firmware updates have come out, one for a $150 consumer lens and the other four for supertele lenses >$7000. But relatively speaking there aren't that many 300-600 MkII lenses out there, and there were even fewer at the time of the update (my 600 II came with the updated firmware, about a month after the advisory was issued). OTOH, there are a lot of 24-70/2.8L II lenses out there, representing a major burden on the service centers and a substantial outlay for shipping costs – I highly doubt they'd require sending the lens in.
As I said, whether they will in the future is another matter. But they have not retrospectively made the firmware updates for the L lenses user-downloadable, for the handful who may have missed the advisory notice.

You should demand your money back.

They list the benefits. Its free. What is not to get? You get those benefits. They get a way to send you information to try to sell you more things. (it's an exchange)
An example of those other things?: CPS Gold and Platinum.

is it working? "and I might upgrade at some point in the future". Hmmmm.

Hi there!

Thanks for reading the part of my post where I said, "Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining - I realize that you get what you pay for - I'm just curious..."

Wait? You didn't read that?

Bummer.

Hi! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed your post. I read your whole post and I responded. I disagree. Statistically it was bound to happen. Reading up and down the responses, has anyone agreed with you?

What is there to disagree or agree with?

I posted a question.

Unless you're disagreeing with my assertion that I want to know if there is more to CPS Silver than I currently understand, there quite literally is nothing to disagree or agree with.

In actuality, statistically - it impossible to disagree with a question. The chance of it happening is 0.

I think you're misreading my post.

"but it seems Silver is more or less just about using minor benefits for the purposes of data collection and mining (equipment owned, type of photography, etc.)" plus lots of support for that. I disagree with that. My fault, I assumed you'd understand I disagreed with the declarative statement, and all the support around it.

If you are concerned about data mining, simply give the minimum amount of information.

Oh, no - I wasn't concerned - it was just a thought.

I love the 400 5.6l lens. it has gone beyond every thing I expected of it . I wanted the Tamron but it was on back order and a huge waiting list at the brick and mortar store I do my camera buying and losing time on the fall migration I bought the 400 and its been a great addition to my line up. Now I just bought the 1.4 tele lll for longer reach static shots on a tripod. it pairs well with my 70D and t1i and the 70-200 f4 is.

Are you happy with the sharpness of the lens with the extender?

on my 70-200 yes but I have not been back to plum island to try out the 400 1.4 combo yet
what little I did use it on the 400 on cape cod it was ok just not in extreme low light f8 is a bear and using live view for auto focus I have yet to master.
but manual focus works well

Got you. I was thinking about useing it with the 1.4 extender with a tripod for still subjects like elk beded down.

yes it will be good here is a hand held with the 1.4iii at sunset sorry not having any wild life shots but its the best I can show. this was taken about 2 hours after I bought the extender still getting used to it and trying to rember manual low light focus.

Thanks for sharing and letting me know

I checked my 7D today and I found something strange... it still works!

As there has been a lot of discussion in the past two weeks about bashing the marvellous 7DII and everybody who wrote something not positive, was called a troll, I wonder, why no one called the owner of this thread a troll? ;)

My 7D still works fine too. It will work fine, until the 5DIV will appear on the horizon ;D

Maybe I have been turning a little green lately. It's time to take a bath! :)

The 7D2 is a fantastic camera, but the other day when I was visiting Adorama I was 2 seconds away from clicking the "Buy it now" button on a brand new 7D2 but I stopped myself before I could and I'm glad I stopped myself from making a mistake.

Instead, I took advantage of the $300.00 rebate and bought a new 6D. :) Now I have a fantastically speedy crop sensor for sports and wildlife (my old 7D) and a perfect FF sensor for portraits and low light (high ISO) photography (my new 6D).

I'm super stoked.

Sigma 35 Art and the USB dock - calibration tips appreciated

oh its also a bit of pain in the arse taking the lens on and off the camera have a body cap nearby to keep poping on the body. I shoot a group of 5 shots for each one defocusing manually and refocusing between each shot

also do this shooting tethered using eos utility its much faster as you can see it up on the screen straight away

i did the calibration manually NOT using focal. I then ran the focal tests to confirm i was where i wanted to be
not sure if you have focal or not but i didn't use the focal results to make changes on the dock calibration
the final focal recommended a +1 AFMA but i didn't change it as this was close enough as makes no difference to me.

if i think of anything else i'll post it up

How Accurate are Canon MTF Charts?

darth mollusk said:
I find it interesting that some people remain unconvinced that the new 400mm DO ii will be an exceptionally sharp lens. The MTF charts for the DO ii look amazing. In contrast I also find it interesting that many who own the 400mm 5.6L claim that this lens delivers impressive image quality, while the MTF charts look rather unimpressive.

Can Canon's MTF charts be used as an accurate prediction of lens sharpness and contrast, or are there cases where real world image quality and their MTF charts vary significantly?

For example: based on the Canon MTF charts alone, could one accurately predict a significant difference in image quality (sharpness and contrast) between the 400mm DO ii and the 100-400 4.5-5.6L ii at 400mm?

The MTF Charts basically represent a perfect lens that has been properly assembled, calibrated, and as good as it can be.

As noted, MTF does not tell you everything, far from it.

The 400mm f/5.6L has been tested by many lens testers. Its a good lens, but nothing exceptional about it. For the price, its hard to beat. Its very close to the 100-400mm MK I, but has no IS and has faster autofocus. I preferred my 100-400L due to

1. IS
2. MFD
3. Same sharpness and reasonably fast AF.
