If Canon made a " truly ultimate" DSLR body for, say, $10k would you buy it?

I will wait until the technology trickles down to a more reasonable price. For me the 5D III is over priced. It looked like the price was going to get to a more reasonable then ML came out with the RAW video and the price skyrocket back up to list.

No I will buy a used 5D III or more likely a 6D II or III with most of the features of the 5D III.

I'm just waiting for the cheap lightweight plastic bodied full frame Rebel FF, which could logically happen after the 6D II takes the technology trickle down from the 5D3, in the wake of whatever the 5D4 brings.

7D Mark-II: Could video capabilities be unlocked through firmware updgrades

InterMurph said:
I shot some video yesterday at a friend's photo shoot.

I put my 7D Mark II on a tripod and pointed it at the subjects, with the continuous auto-focus enabled. It started the day at ISO 800, f/4.0, 1/50th.

I hand-held my brand new Sony A7s. Towards the end of the day, it was at ISO 3200, f/3.5, 1/50th.

The video from the Sony is gorgeous and detailed, even at ISO 3200. Beautiful colors, and incredible detail.

The video from the 7D Mark II is terrible, even at ISO 800. It looks soft, washed out, and altogether bad.

We know from the Magic Lantern experience that these Canon DSLRs can capture outstanding video, but that the image processors ruin it. So I would assume that the 7D Mark II is capable of wonderful things.

But I'm pretty much done with Canon for video. I have officially switched to Sony.

Same here, bought A7s, its night and day difference in video quality

Leica: Trouble in paradise?

It can take some time to resolve obscure issues, especially when they do not necessarily affect every single product sold.

That didn't stop Canon being ripped a new butt over the largely internet hyped 1D MkIII AF soap opera. Nobody could reliably reproduce the 'issue', just some cameras didn't do well shooting some subjects at some temperatures, sometimes, yet the internet had a firestorm and Canon didn't know how or what to do to placate everybody, most of whom never even touched a 1D MkIII.

QSI is getting ripped over the glow issue, too. Human nature, I guess.

Patent: EF-M 70-400 f/4.5-7.2 STM

I just noticed B&H has the EF-M adapter kit discontinued and that they are selling the adapter alone on sale in a white box only. I've seen subtler signs of a big change!

Various flavors of EOS M kits have been discontinued and then relisted at B&H for a couple of years now.

A while back, Amazon UK had the 6D listed as discontinued.

Good point, thanks

Which mf split screen for 5d2/6d?

Eldar said:
Marsu42 said:
Unfortunately with my current camera (6d, 5d2 is the same) I'm getting the worst of both worlds: mediocre af system and mediocre mf capability at the same time. These cameras are ff in name, but even my old film cameras (620, rt) have a far bigger and brighter viewfinder making mf more accessible.
On the 6D you can use the Eg-S screen. That makes manual focus very simple.

I didn't try that (I've got the grid screen installed, the eg-s wouldn't work with my f4 lenses in dimmer light, and from what I read the real difference is for faster lenses than f2.8.

But I imagine it's as much matter of magnification as of the screen displaying the dof - at least 1d users wrote on CR that their vf makes mf much simpler as it's simply larger. As written above, looking at my old film cameras I tend to believe that.

Anyone here switch from Canon to Sony A7r for landscape?

eml58 said:
I use the 1Dx & 5DMK III, primarily the 1Dx.

Bought into the a7r around a year ago, mainly because of the 36MP Sony Sensor, but also looking for the smaller unit/weight factor.

The a7r form factor is interesting and at times a plus, but the more I used it the less important this became, I just prefer the 1Dx in hand, even the 5DMK III.

The EVF on the a7r, it's a PIA, some will get used to it as they will compromise, but there's no way the current EVF cameras can compare to the OVF of the Canon/Nikon etc, the latency of the image in the viewfinder is just.....awful, always waiting for the Image to refresh, real Pain.

The Menu system, the system in general, is Ok, but I found frustrating, and Manual Focus on the a7r is an absolute bummer. But it's something given time you could adapt to, it's just a menu system after all, doesn't necessarily impact on Image quality.

The Metabones latest Mk III adaptor to use Canon Lenses (Read in my case Zeiss), works, but I'm not convinced use of an adaptor, any adaptor, doesn't detract in Image Quality.

I would simply like the a7r sensor in my 5DMK III and I'de be a Happy Camper.

After this last 6 weeks I gave the a7r to my eldest Lad,

I'll just wait out Canon for a high MP Body in 2015 as I'm extensively committed to Canon L Lenses & Canon mount Zeiss Lenses, my advice along with others would be see if you can rent an a7r for a couple weeks, I'm just not convinced at this point hat Sony have a Camera that can compete with either Canon or Nikon, Sensors absolutely, Camera Bodies not yet, Lenses certainly not now & not for a very long time, the adaptors are not the answer.

Note: I took some liberty shortening the quote.

I too am a Canon shooter. I now use a 1Dx, having sold most of my earlier bodies. About 8 months ago, I bought an A7r, for the sensor and for the size. I couldn't agree more with the opinions stated above. The form factor is interesting to carry, but harder for me to use (my hands aren't that big, but the camera is small).

I'd actually prefer a rangefinder to the EVF viewfinder, which I find to be a PIA. The camera is slow and loud; it is a problem for anything but landscape. The Metabones is just OK, and Canon L glass is heavy enough that the size of the Sony is a disadvantage. Tripod only-slow, considered shooting only.

I like the 55mm FE lens, but the 35mm is mediocre (and required some glue on the shade), and I returned the telephoto zoom because I could not get a sharp picture with it. There are more native lenses now, but I'd rent the A72 rather than the R to see if I liked it.

I too am considering making a gift of the Sony to a relative. The a7r strikes me as an enthusiasts toy (which is why I tried it), but it ain't gonna cut it for serious use as a carry camera.

I like the 1Dx, but there are times I want as good an image as I can get, with perhaps a little less weight (and a back up camera). My big question is whether to buy a 5D III now, or whether to wait for a successor camera (perhaps a 5D with the a7r sensor ;-) ). Is this just the wrong time to get a 5D III? Are the recent deals just due to the season, or is the camera on the way out?

Question for 1DX owners

Congrats JR

1dx will give you a much better handling with your big lenses: 85L II, 70-200, and of course future 200mm f2 IS ;)

Keep in mind....it might take you sometime to get use to 18MP(larger pixel). Once you passed that state, I doubt you would pickup your 5D III.

Thanks Dylan - I watch out for the larger pixels. The big whites are on my shopping list too - the first one being the 300 II.

tpatana said:
I'm tempted to order one too, but I'll wait for the Mk2. After that maybe 200/2 or 300/2.8. New kidneys grow back in few years, right, so I can keep selling them?

I considered waiting for the Mk2 as well but felt that photo opportunities can't wait. That said, if the Mk2 did come around sometime next year, I'd probably sell the 5D3 and get a Mk2.

I've had the 5D3 for almost 2 years now, and can't complain on anything much. Biggest one is the noise when pushing exposure up.

For 1Dx2, my about realistic hope is:
-about 1.5-2 stop better high ISO noise than 5D3
-at least 10fps
-between 20-35 MP

Also I'd love, although not so important:
-dual CF slots with individual bus on each one so it'd dump the buffer at twice the speed if you use 2 CF cards.

Plus of course all the other stuff like stellar AF with gazillion AF points etc. Not sure on the DPAF, first I want to know it works good.

Scanner recommendations for digitising prints?

I've scanned photos 'in album' with the Canon 8800f many times. The hinge moves up to allow very thick subjects to be scanned- or you can leave it open and just cover the area with a dark sheet.
If you want REAL speed in print scanning, consider a Kodak print scanner. They have auto feeders and can do 50 prints a minute but they start at around $1200! See https://ezphotoscan.com/products/photo-saver-desktop-scanner-windows-or-mac

Can you stack Canon 2X plus 1.4 Extenders?

The moon (and the Earth under you) are moving remember. You can't take a long exposure unless you have some way to track the moon.
Objection! While at night it is dark here on earth, on the visible moon it is day. I have successfully photographed the moon with a 600 L II, a Canon 2x III and a Kenko 1.4 x (in this combination you don't need any extension tube). I used the 6D @ ISO 1600 and f 13 and 1/320 s. At this magnification, you clearly see the moon moving, but believe me, 1/320 securely freezes that movement!

Yes, it can be done... But this is pretty soft even for web viewing. Drop the 1.4 and shoot with the 600+2x and crop a little and your final image would be much sharper and allow for two full stops lower ISO or faster shutter speed.

Are macro lenses essential for jewelry shooting?

dilbert said:

Preface: I've worked at a major jewelry and gemstone retailer, specifically in product imaging.

We exclusively use macros for all gemstone shots and usually use macros for all other purposes, occasionally using the TS-90 for necklaces and similarly large pieces.
...

Yes, when photographing jewellry a TS lens can be very handy. Wasn't sure anyone would pick up on that :)

Yes, my TS-90 was great, but the OP did not want to buy a lens, so why suggest a $1000 one?

crap!...I always miss this. Have been waiting to pick up a 24-70 II and I'm always minutes too late!

There are smart phone apps that notify you when a product is in stock, and, if you have your Canon account all setup and ready, you have a pretty good chance. But, those 24-70's that were restocked today sold out in minutes.
Cool!, any you recommend for iPhone? that would be great!

Yep, we shouldn't include all the pros who switched to a D810 or D4s mainly to get an articulating screen. How many pros did that? ::)

Neuro, please do try to read whole posts before firing up your "Haaarrrr, those Nikon trolls are everywhere" reply engine, will you? This paranoia reminds me of a particular party in my country seeing commies everywhere, back in the days...

Edit: Well, you cannot read my op anymore because I just managed to delete it by accident (modify instead of quote), but the sentence above was in it and I didn't even mention Nikon :-p
