We may see some new Cinema EOS cameras for NAB 2024 in April

The Cinema EOS line feels like it has been ignored for quite some time. While there were new products in the pipeline, we have been told multiple times that global events scuttled at least a few of them. We previously reported that Canon would announce follow-ups to both the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III and

I fully expect RF mount upgrades to be announced.

I also hope Canon allows/announces/encourages more third-party Cinema Lens players to participate in the RF game.

I presently work with Atlas Anamorphic and Duclos Cine-Modded Zeiss Otus ZE (de-clicked aperture) lenses. They are all EF-mount, native on my C300 and C200. Then I acquired an R5C for its lighter/smaller form and duality with photography. I use an EF-RF adaptor - and when it works, it is nice - but recently, one of those adaptors' release mechanisms broke and got perma-stuck to an Atlas. Fixed with a mount swap. But yeah, a C300 IV with RF might be nice, but not until I can potentially RF-convert my lens investment (assuming the option is possible and available by those vendors).

Argh... now Nikon buys Red and complicates.

All this is to reflect on the decisions we, as a community, have had to make to pursue these mount changes. The lenses are the paintbrushes we use in our art.

Leica officially announces the SL3

Fully agree, same is valid for the M line.
The SL 3 ergonomics remind me of the Leicaflex, everything one needed, no unnecessary crap!

I sadly had to move on from the M, focusing became challenging, and the the visoflex reliability was frustrating. Brilliant ergonomics as always though. I'm not having issues with focusing a Mamiya 6 though, so that's good.

Two-in-one extender

Nothing more known, plenty of speculation to rehash.

IMO, a 1x-1.4x-2x is unlikely. For that to work, the 1x would also need optics and the whole thing would be massive and result in some IQ loss even at 1x. The patent diagram on which that speculation is based is for a simple video adapter, and the diagram was taken out of context and wishfully over-interpreted.

A 1.4x-2x design seems more likely, and was the subject of another patent.

The rumor indicated the ‘amazing new TC design’ (whatever it turns out to be, assuming it even happens) was to launch with the RF 200-500/4, and we haven’t seen that lens yet.

It’s an Olympic year, Canon could make a splash by launching an R1 along with a 200-500 (without the built-in TC) and a new combo TC all in one go. They’ve been quiet so far this year, with nothing announced for CP+. That might mean they’re planning something big (the R5II is likely coming, too), or it might mean nothing.

Antarctic trip and the question of which telephoto?

Your preparation for the journey sounds meticulous and well-thought-out. Having the RF 24-105 and RF 100-500 lenses on separate bodies is a smart move for seamless shooting without the need to switch lenses. The decision to prioritize filming by opting for smaller lenses and utilizing the RF 2x teleconverter for additional focal length flexibility demonstrates a strategic approach to capturing your experiences in Antarctica. Wishing you smooth filming and incredible footage during your adventure! Safe travels, @snudel!

Canon is in deep talks with third-party lens manufacturers

Canon probably have their lawyers stationed outside Viltrox offices making sure the 16mm f/1.8 never gets out with an RF label. Funnily, just knowing it might someday be available for RF is already putting a stop to my urges of getting ultrawide Canon L glass (as if we had any primes anyway).

The RF 85mm f/1.2L at 3k and 1.2kg is so over the top they might as well let the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN in. The entry level RF 85 would still have a niche as a sharp less expensive semi-macro portrait lens. People who make money with 85mm will still buy the 1.2L. Same with the RF 50mm's - Sigma would sit very nicely in between for those who don't want either of Canon's offerings.

And the fictitious RF 35mm L... just give it to Sigma already so we can go shoot.

Canon Executive interview at CP+ 2024

DPR has an article with the title "Sony a9 III: Global shutter comes with an image quality cost", not something that Canon would want in a flagship camera.
Surprise surprise, anyone who has an idea about sensor design could have predicted that. Must be quite bad if DPR publishes anything critical about a Sony product. I remember well that they really put a lot of effort in the R5 "heat problem" propaganda - for a stills & video camera that offered 8k for the first time but never was made for 30 min 8k video takes.

Canon teasing higher MP camera for Vision Pro?

Maybe, but from what I can see, other than the R5c, the C500MkII has the highest resolution at 5.9k.
The C500MkII was towards the end of 2019 and C700 FF was 2018 with similar specs, but now discontinued. Both are EF mount, so it seems reasonable there will be something similar, but maybe not the same name. Although, they could decide not to compete in this area anymore...

At least three new lenses to be announced ahead of CP+

Yes - BUT some of them for APS-C please
To be fair, FF 1.4L primes would go on APS-C, too :geek:
(Just joking; I'm with you on the lack of APS-C bright lenses...but let's cover FF needs first, where there's certainly more people willing to spend for bright primes. Then they can also come with small format bright primes, even if I'm not sure that will even happen)

Will there be bodies in RF-S as compact as an EOS M5 or M6 ?

I interpret ‘commercialization depends on the market today’ to mean the market is too small to support two mounts, and if the R50 and R100 sell well, they might make a smaller (no VF) model.
Canon said something very similar about EOS-M 2 years ago and I think they are stacking the deck a bit. Not introducing new bodies or lenses, discontinuing almost everything and then saying “Weird, sales numbers have declined!”

But it’s hard for consumers to separate cause and effect and there’s always the chance that Canon asked @Canon Rumors Guy to consult on EOS-M ;)

Canon Patent Application: Another RF Z lens

That front element looks very fragile, so it would likely be built with a protective glass in front. That would add up to 24 elements (counting the protective glass). Sounds pretty pricey for an APS-c lens, so likely aimed at cinema super 35. No reason it wouldn\'t work for APS-s, unless not supported by the bodies like the Canon version of an RF speed-booster, which is only supported on the C7. One of the challenges of these very smart cameras is that there is a lot of software required for full support of lenses and that is surely one of the reasons we haven\'t seen 3rd party lenses for RF.
