Rome - Street Candids

Some of the candids look like the people got a little disturbed by your photography.
Because I try to avoid this, I am not so into street photography. But I like it.

Petach, Did you have any concerns about this when shooting?

thanks all for the positives. Appreciated.

The old guy in the bar was a willing subject. He is 94 and thought nobody would consider him an interesting subject. He was pleased to sit for me. The guy with the pipe is from Bristol. He was also a willing subject. The others had no idea I was photographing them except for the dark haired lady who suspected it. She had her head down looking at her phone. She came out of the subway into full sunlight I was aiming in her direction. She got within a couple of feet and suddenly looked up at me when....presumably....she saw my feet refusing to budge. I activated my silent shutter but kept the camera to my eye. I didn't look back. She was in the can...job done....move on.

missing reviews of 400mm f/4 DO IS II

Don't expect Canon to be passing dozens of these around to reviewers like the 7D MK II which is intended for the general public. Only a few 400mm D) II's will be produced as compared to consumer bodies.

The lens is likely difficult to produce, DO technology still requires a lot of magic. Don't be surprised if the deliveries are delayed a few months.

I think 'Shootit' was right to be pissed off with you people! I also think you guys are more interested in imaginary stuff than real S___! Judging from your 'work' most of you need some serious imaginary cameras to achieve a decent photo!!

HAHAHAHAA!!!!

Salut, stupid CR forum!!

Ps to Shootitalready: don't hang around with these dumb LOOOOOOSERS, mate, they don't know the first thing about photography!!!!!! >:(

Salut, troll! The others were merely pointing out good truths.

One of the reasons I prefer exposure stacking over HDR is that, for me, it looks more natural than HDR

Exposure stacking is HDR.

I think he means stacking multiple identical exposures, which technically speaking does not actually require something like a 32-bit float "HDR" file or anything like that. Exposure stacking, when you have still scenes, can reduce random noise (although it will reinforce non-random noise, which is bad), and improve dynamic range. If you stack a bunch of 16-bit TIFF files converted from 14-bit RAWs, you can gain more dynamic range, for sure, but in general I wouldn't normally call that "HDR"...you don't get a minimum of 20 stops of DR like you usually do with a true blend to 32-bit float.

Lens identity?

Not to worry, there are more important things than checking signatures, and if I hadn't already thought about it your suggestion would have been necessary!

Hi lintoni.
Thanks for the thought, seller says battery is charged, but I have a 40D so would take a spare in pocket just in case.

Cheers, Graham.

It might be worth asking friends if they have a camera that uses the same battery (BP-511) and borrow a battery, just to check that the camera works, if you do get your offer accepted.
Duh! Should've checked your sig before posting!

EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS Replacement Coming in November [CR2]

Canon Rumors said:
The new design resembles the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS with a thin focus ring at the base, and a wider zoom ring near the front element. The aperture range for the lens will remain at f/4.5-5.6. Another mentioned feature is in the lens hood for the lens. It sounds like there will be a retractable opening near where a filter would be, so you could turn your circular polarize easily if you needed to.</p>

70-300 is nice compact and sharp zoom. Not up to the 70-200 F2.8 II IS or 200-400 standards but reasonably sharp.

I have wished Canon would extend this lens by 30% on both ends but keep the weight and size down.

Perhaps it will happen - I can only hope.

Is this 70-200 2.8 II worth buying?

I paid $1600 for mine as a Canon refurb about 1-1/2 years back.

Note that on the below price history graph, the price has dropped more and more each year starting around black Friday. You can form your own opinion as to what will happen this year, it depends on inventory and sales, I doubt that even Canon knows how low they will go.

Broncolor Derivative

I recently encountered an old pack/heads system at a camera show that used Broncolor sockets for attaching the heads to the pack. The owner told me that it was made in France a while ago. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer. In my head it starts with "Godo...", but all I can think of is Godox which clearly isn't French and hasn't made Broncolor mount stuff. The pack was black and had red trims where you would normally find light blue on original Broncolor equipment.

Anyone knows what manufacturer I'm talking about?

Thanks

Testing the Sigma 50mm Art lens in my style of photography

Are the AF issues across the board (i.e. with all bodies) or does it only happen with the 61pt AF system bodies?

For example, my Tamron 24-70 VC does not work well with the 5D-III but works fine with my 6D and 1Ds-III. So does the Sigma lens have a compatibility issue with the 61pt AF system or is it just completely unreliable due to some design issue (e.g. excessive slop in AF gearing or field curvature etc...) ???

I can't comment on your question directly because I only have one camera body. However, looking back at the shoots I did while I had this lens I'm noticing something... it only front focused in the low light situations but all of the daytime shots look spot on.

The focus ring on the copy I rented was tightly assembled... stiffer than either of my f2.8 zooms. I know that doesn't necessarily correlate to AF performance, but thought someone might care to know.

7Dii AF performance

According to Roger at Lensrentals the Sigma 120-300 os identifies itself as a Canon 135 f2 when attached to a Canon body. http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/08/canon-illumination-correction-and-third-party-lenses

The 7Dii AF Manual lists the 135 f2 as one of the lenses that can utilize all 65 AF points as well as the centre cross type point (ie: full access to all AF functions). That's encouraging - we'll see if it actually works in November.

You need to get the latest Adobe Reader, that fixed it for me.
I've tried using the af manual but it keeps asking for a password. Any idea what it is?

More Talk of an October Announcement of a DSLR [CR1]

Re: Canon is just like Apple

clicstudio said:
A couple of years ago, Tim Cook said that the iPhone and its 4" screen were big enough and that the "experience" was what counted, not the size. What a bunch of BS...
So people bought the available big phones and Samsung made a lot of money and took over the market.
Just 2 weeks ago, the iPhone 6 and 6+ went on sale and they already sold 10 million of them! Tim Cook was wrong and he knows it.
People want evolution and more is more, and bigger is usually better.
I, as a professional photographer, want more megapixels and a bigger screen to replace my 1DX.
Why not?
Canon probably lost a lot of faithful owners to the D800. Who wouldn't want one at the specs and price?
I am still very happy with Canon to take the plunge but they need to step it up or they will lose like Apple did.
Being late to the party is not a good business move.

Well, yes and no. Canon is like Apple in a lot of ways, but I don't see this as really one of them.

IIRC it was Steve, not Tim that said 4" was enough. It wasn't the right time and it wasn't a mistake. Saying it's enough because, inevitably something larger will have a market, that's a mistake.

The iPhone 6 and 6+ are far too big (and at the same time, they are not). The form-factor of the 5 should be kept, as, for a phone, it's a good size for most people. Now, before anyone jumps on me about the 'too big', it's true, I should know, I have a "Times Square Jumbotron" right here in front of me . . . my hands are huge and it's a ridiculous size for a phone. I was just about to buy an iPad mini, and, for the price of the 128GB one, couldn't rationalize the unwieldy size. The iPhone 6+ is a great tablet, it's a serviceable phone.

Apple doesn't like to do things they don't utterly succeed at (except for making mice. For some reason, apple took a lot of pride in how terrible their pointer devices were just like Subarus are unapologetically ugly). They're not that big of a company, so they need to focus on what they succeed in. Take the "low end" phone market. The iPhone 5c numbers were good but the 5s outpaced it. They did the right thing in gauging the market and not jumping in until they knew the sales were there, and could do it in the way they always do, with a reasonable profit margin.

I honestly don't believe they lost any money on people who swapped. My ex listened to time and time again about android, but when it came right down to it, there was no switching. Her iPhone 4s was stolen, and, with all her options open, she decided to stay with the Apple "ecosystem" (all my stuff's here anyways).

Here's the tie-in to Canon. A friend of mine who shoots as well is a Nikon guy. He was complaining nonstop about how long the D800 was taking to be released, and admiring my gear and shots . . . not once did he consider swapping. There's a lot to be said for brand loyalty. Yes, you may be missing out, yes, it may be something hugely useful . . . but very few people switch. Only a few stick around here after doing so to constantly complain about it (I can think of one).

Another important difference between Canon and Apple is that on Canon forums, people lament their camera of choice, on Apple forums, they apologize for it.

Audio on a DSLR

TheTechy1 said:
I have a Canon T3i with a rode VideoMic Pro which I shoot all my videos with. Recently I got my hands on the Canon XA20 and was amazed at the audio quality I got with it with the Audio Technica AT897 microphones. i now returned it and am considering what to do to get better audio quality. The Audio Technica mic is XLR so i maybe if I get that mic I can get a JuiceLink? but could I instead just get a Zoom H5 and use the XLR jacks in the H5 and then into my canon T3i? Does anyone have any better ideas on microphones? I want to note that I am not doing a duel system, I want a single system for my workflow. On top of all this that I asked, does the Canon 70D have a better preamp then my T3i? On top of upgrading my audio, if its worth it I might buy a new body, but not sure yet since I am really waiting to see what canon does with the EOS line up and their professional camcorder line up next year (2015). Thank you in advance for anyone who answers.

I own the Zoom H6, where I run a signal into my DSLR. This way I get the best of both worlds. I get a quality preamp, which can feed audio directly to the DSLR and monitor with Magic Lantern. The H6 has nice big physical knobs to adjust your levels and is very flexible.

I also have the option to record up to six audio tracks, if I want to record a backup of the audio feed.

DSLR audio is not easy, and this is the closest thing, I have found that come anything near the convenience of recording audio with a camcorder.
