Canon Announces New Superzoom PowerShot SX700 HS & Rugged PowerShot D30

Any chance of a waterproof point and shoot camera being released that shoots in raw? (This excludes the newer Nikon one, I want a pocketable camera).

Are you familiar with CHDK, bgran8?... Those guys hack lots of Canon's Point & Shoot Cameras to unlock extra features and I think one of their primary goals is to unlock RAW shooting - have a nosey around the internets, they may have already broken open the innards of earlier waterproof shooters :D

SLR Magic Anamorphic Lens Adapter : Thoughts for use on 5D3 and EF Lenses?

Well, looking so far, from what I can tell, this filter won't work with many of my best lenses. <P>
It appears it will work with my 40mm 2.8 pancake and my 85mm 1.8, but my L lenses are all too large for it to mount to.

Still, VERY interesting, but right now I have a 50L and the 100L macro on my lens list to buy next, so barring a lottery win, I may have to put this on the back burner behind those lenses.

Then again, who knows what will happen one weekend after a few beers and impulse online shopping hits...

:)

I'm keeping my eye on this however, it does look very interesting.

Where do you sell used lenses

RustyTheGeek said:
I think everyone here at CR would like and appreciate if CR would start a trade page to sell used gear to other CR members, etc. Sort of a CraigsList for CR. Call it CansList or CRList or something. :)

Well this also would be Craig's list wouldn't it? :P

FredMiranda is really nice. I bought several items and sold my 10-22 there. Super easy and nice experience all round.

Advice: Should I sell my 24-70mm f2.8L (I) and get the 24-70mm f4L IS?

Hjalmarg1 said:
I have read that the 24-70mm f4L IS has less distortion than the old 24-70mm f2.8L, in addition to the Image stabilization and lighter weight so I am considering to get the IS version. I don't shoot much portrait and fast pace events so, I think the 4-stop IS may help me more on low light situations. I am just a hobbyiest, not a pro?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

You will notice the difference! I've had 5 of the old 24-70mm L's and was unhappy with all of them. Even my 24-105mmL was slightly better.

BIG Discounts on SUPER FAST CF Cards at B&H

Just got an email from Planet5D with the below message:

Some special pricing came in overnight – I believe these are good while supplies last – so don’t be waiting around as they may not last long!

The last one in the list is $250 off! And at 100mbps, it should be fast enough for Magic Lantern RAW video :)

A tip of the hat to Canon Customer Service

chris_w_digits said:
You probably are. I got mine mailed off on the 3rd. Always read all the fine print and be sure you follow every instruction to the letter. If you don't, they can use it as an excuse not to give you the rebate. I pre-submitted online and they've received mine. I really wish they'd do away with mail-in rebates and just let the retailer charge the lower proce directly.
The story I heard on this one (which Canon did for the last few years) was that the retailers had to submit the rebate information and were very unhappy with the process and how long it took to get their reimbursements.

Need a new office printer, what do you guys have?

I recently picked up a Lexmark cx410dte.

This is the only color laser with 1200 x 1200 output at less than $1k USD. True PS3 too.

It will do wireless, if you buy the wireless dongle. Or, connect it to a wired network and a wireless router.

It will *not* do wireless/network/USB all at the same time.

Color print output is not glossy and plastiky looking. The "printer evaluation image" from breathing color prints out very nicely.

The Lexmark mobile print utility works, at least for Android.

You have to use the included Lexmark utility to initiate scans- Windows will not recognize the machine as a WIA device.

It is a true business class machine and challenging to set up. I had to spend some time with tech support (Lexmark and Adobe) to get the scan features up and running.

Lexmark has a toner recycling program.

I also have an OKI c530, but it is not a multifunction machine. Print output colors are also very good, but the print is shiny. I think OKI has a MF machine based on that model series.

Canon EOS Rebel Kiss X70 Specs

More likely it is a repackaged T3i than a T2i. I expect that camera will finally be discontinued.

I still have my T3i, it is a solid camera, certainly more than good enough for casual use.

Nope, the main difference between the T2i and the T3i is the articulated LCD screen and wireless flash support, which the T3i has.
The T5 / Kiss X70 has a fixed screen and no wireless support like the T2i . While the internals look indeed like a T2i, it seems they skimped a bit with the T5, i.e. the LCD has only 460,000 dots (T2i/T3i 1040,000 dots), the viewfinder is only 0.8x (instead of 0.85/0.87x), and it seems to have no spot metering - the latter means it perhaps still uses an older exposure system, and not the TTL 63-zone system of T2i/7D etc.
They also skimped on the battery. Overall, a camera that is a little lighter than the T2i, but not smaller, a tad bigger than the T2i.

The 1100d had the same 63-zone exposure system as the 7D. And the battery life exceeded the 600D. So in the 1200d it probably remains the same.

What gear does a Pro photographer bring to photograph the Olympics....

Also...he notes that his 200-400 is his favorite lens for shooting sports. I've been tempted by the new canon 200-400, but can't justify the cost.

But....(I'm primarily a sport shooter)

I had an idea, what if I could pick up a second pro body and a 200-400 for about the same price as the canon 200-400 alone. ( my 5d3 is my current second body, but it's not nearly as good for sports as my 1dx)

Thoughts anyone?
I actually did something like that. I saw a Nikon 200-400 advertised for $2500 on Craigslist here locally, and after two or three weeks, curiosity got the best of me and I asked about it. The seller was a local Doctor, and he had bought it for his son. His son never used it and had gone off to college. He told daddy to sell it. Daddy had no idea as to its value, he had paid $4500 for it, and just picked $2500 out of the air.
The lens was in mint condition, so I bought it. Then, after failed attempts to buy a D3 locally, I bought a D300s and a $100 aluminum gimbal head. So, for $3200, I have a semi pro level camera with the 200-400 VR I lens and and gimbal head. The VRII lens has a bit better stabilization, but optically its pretty much the same. My lens would benefit from more MP and a FF body, but I've had a D800 already and don't want another.

That's far cheaper than buying just the Canon lens.

Mt Spokane....That's a pretty nice acquisition you made..and a heck of a lot less expensive than the canon 200-400

What to buy????

ljgent said:
I currently shoot with a Nikon D700.. I have used Canon in the past.. I want to get a new Canon.. A lot of my friends shoot with Canon, 5D Mark lll, 6D, 70D, which all interest me. But there is talk about perhaps a 7D Mark ll, in the horizon, What do I do? get one of the three models mentioned above or do you think there will be 7D Mark ll sometime soon?
I shoot a lot of Landscape, Nature, some portrait. I just don't know what to do, which model to buy?

For landscapes, the 12MP of the D700 had a lot of Nikon photographers wanting the higher resolution of the 5D bodies. Since you presumably own Nikon lenses, if you want higher resolution images, a D610 or D800 would upgrade you for less money. As noted, the D700 is still a excellent camera unless you are needing severe crops.

I would not recommend going to a crop body like the 70D or 7D once you've had a FF body.
If switching to Canon is something you want to do (to be able to borrow or share lenses with your friends), you need to know if they are using EF-S crop lenses, or EF full frame lenses. The 5D and 6D FF bodies will not mount EF-s lenses.

<p>More talk that prototype versions of the EOS 7D replacement will be sent to the Olympic games in Sochi this month. For the moment, a lot of the functionality and features are still “up for grabs” on the new model. The current timeline for the camera is an announcement in Q2 of this year with a release in Q3. Perhaps the camera will be tested further in Brazil for the World Cup?</p>
<p>We expect to hear more during the Olympics, though any specs mentioned may still be omitted from the final consumer product.</p>

Has anything new been seen at the Olympics yet ??

Tamron SP 150-600 f/5-6.3 VC Review

I had a play with one today in my local shop. I am shockingly out of practice of hand holding a telelphoto! Even with a borrowed monopod shots were blurred, however there were 2 which showed the potential this lens could have, I would have asked to take it outside, but it was so wet and gloomy I was better off inside pointing it at a camera display cabinet.

I feel with another play and more thought of settings it would perform much better and convince me to pull the trigger on it. It may be I will have to use a tripod with it rather than a monopod.

Adorama slipping information of future 7D tag?

Sorry to disappoint, but no.

First, they'd never officially call it a 7D Mark I or anything like that. Second, you're looking at a footnote notation mark, as in 7Di or 7D†, although there's no footnote on the product page. They're marking it to indicate that compatibility with the 7D isn't 'full' in that with the 7D, you must attach the GP-E2 via the USB cable and some functions don't work, whereas with the 1D X and 5DIII (and more recent bodies), you can get full functionality and it's via the hotshoe alone.

This is the footnote from the Canon site:

When the EOS 7D is used with the GP-E2 the following restrictions will apply: a) geotagging function will not work for movies while recording; b) geotagging features will not work for movies when using the Map Utility; c) electronic compass information and automatic time setting is not available; d) transmission via the hot shoe is not possible.

Straight Thru eyepiece magnifier for 50D/70D........

Plainsman said:
Can anyone advise on a suitable type (ie NOT the prism right angle type that Canon make)?

Any recommendations for the ones on ebay?

Magnification of 1.3 to 1.5X would be fine.

Nikon make a good one but doubtful whether it would fit Canon.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
