POLL: How many shutter cycles do you burn through?

I realized, a little too late, that I under-voted here.

15,000 - 20,000/year was with the 5D MkII only

10,000 - 15,000/year with a 7D (wildlife, special projects where AF speed is important)

15,000 to 20,000/year with a pair of Sony NEX (one of which recently died)

I tend to shoot and process images nearly every day of the week. Which leads to some great projects and publications (books, magazines, mooks, on-line stuff, everything).

How do you cull your photo's?

Hi Folks.
I tried Fast Stone Image Viewer, so far it seems really fast, so much faster than the windows viewer I was trying to use! It is great to be able to do the side by side comparison, and one touch future to screen toggle with full size is excellent. I think this is going to really help speed things up, I haven't RTFM yet and I couldn't find a rating system but what the hey, it is free after all.
I figured it would be good as I have used their photo resizer software and it works well.

Cheers, Graham.

I sold my 135 f/2 a while back and this lens is the one that makes me want to try my first Zeiss SLR lens. These threads don't help ;)
OK everyone, I am taking bets on how long it takes for Mac to get his first Zeiss ;)
I already have some Zeiss optics, but none for my SLR. It will probably be my next lens unless Canon surprises us all at Photokina.

GP-E1 Time Accuracy

Here is how it is supposed to work:

The satellite is transmitting the time signal. If the satellite is in geosynchronous orbit the signal will take about 0.240 seconds to reach you. If your satellite is in a lower orbit the signal will take less time to reach you, approximately 0.100 seconds... If you can only pick up one satellite and you know both where you and the satellite are, you know the distance and delay and can work backwards and get accurate time. If you don't know both locations, you don't know the signal delay and therefore, can not calculate the real time, but you can guess within a quarter second.

Once you can see three satellites, you can calculate the delay from each one and triangulate your position. This gives you an accurate time fix.

Your electronic device has it's own clock. This clock will keep good time, but it will not be exact. Over a period of time this clock will drift away from real time. Lets say that at noon your device's clock was synchronized to GPS time and that 5 hours later, when it was synchronized again, the time had drifted by 10 "ticks" away from the real time. A well implemented timing service would then realize that every half hour that it needs to adjust it's time by 1 "tick" to keep up with the GPS clock. This is known as a "GPS Trained " clock and they can be extremely accurate. I have one in my lab that is accurate to 10^-14 seconds. (0.00000000000001)

Most commercial devices use standard modules that communicate with the device through a series of standard commands. For most GPS modules, these commands are standardized as NMEA, and the time command reports time with a precision of 0.01 seconds. That is as accurate as you should be able to get with your camera. The least accurate devices out there have internal clocks that are accurate to 10^-7, and that's a drift of about .08 seconds per day. Being off by a second is a big deal and indicated that something is wrong.....

7DII full frame?

ULFULFSEN said:
well last rumor heard from a good informed source close to canon told me.... canon will introduce exchangeable sensors.

there will be no phase detection AF anymore because it´s obsolete.
DPAF II is now faster and way better.

so maybe the 7D MK2 Standard comes with APS-C and the Edition model comes with a FF sensor.

btw: Doug confirmed it was a placeholder text.
Yeah, DPAF has definite speed advantages over standard phase detect AF for DSLR's, and that big mirror and shutter blocking out the light to the sensor where DPAF is situated at the time of acquiring focus doesn't matter at all ::)

Are these sensors you talk about to be available in a user replaceable canister?

Are These The EOS 7D Mark II Specifications?

For me it would be more interesting to fix some annoying bugs on all those new cameras, instead of inventing some (often useless) new functions.

For example, why do we have a 30 seconds limit on the bulb-mode? There is no reason for this, but it's a pain in the ass in the field while taking longexposureshots. Why don't we get the fancy A-DEP Mode back? What's with the eye-controlled AF? Worked great in the EOS-5.

Why is there no small light on the bayonett for nighttime-lenschange (and no on the buttons eighter, but there are some cams with it like the D4S).

Why is there no stacking modus with all those lenses? STM would be perfect for it. This list could go on and on. Sometimes if i grab an old camera like a Contax or a Zenza, I find features I miss after a while.

Consumer Reports: Canon G1X MK2 Best Ever

c.d.embrey said:
Consumer Reports didn't like the Nikon F because they thought IT WAS UNRELIABLE. That it broke-down too often ???

BTW a Nikon F, at the time it was a NEW camera, was no different than many other cameras. It had manual focusing, a shutter speed dial on the camera and the aperture on the lens.

I have a Nikon F, and the finder mechanism was designed by Rube Goldberg :) All those little levers and moving parts jam and bend whenever a bearing gets a little stiff. I've spent hours working on it straightening out bent parts to get it working again. I'd Give Consumer Reports a A++ for that call. That mechanism is like no other camera, and is horrible.

Help deciding on going full frame

So I finally got all my gear and have had the opportunity to take some pics using all 3 of the new zooms and thought I would give some feedback to those that offered advice as well as some info for those who may be going through the same process as myself.

For my standard usage as a walk around holiday kit the 6D with 24-105 is much much sharper than the 550D with the 18-135 STM. This was my main goal to improve image quality for a one lens holiday setup and I am very happy with the results.

Of the other 2 lenses - the 70-300L is brilliant. That thing is so sharp you could cut yourself with it !!! The 16-35 F4 is also very sharp. I haven't taken many shots with the 16-35 F4 but early indications are great.

So now I have to list all of my crop equipment on Ebay.

This first started with me looking at going to L series lenses rather than EFS lenses to improve image quality. However none of the focal length ranges for the zooms made sense for a single walk around holiday lens. So that lead to the conclusion that if I was going to L series zooms for image quality, then I would also need to go to a full frame body to make the zoom ranges make sense. I was also looking for the higher ISO quality available from the 6D.

So all I in all I am a very happy 6D owner and would encourage anyone else considering the move from a crop sensor body with EFS lenses to do the same if funds permit.

They look familiar - but I don't think anyone had mentioned prices or pre-orders though, hence "selling soon"...

f8 AF question or the 7D and 1D4

Valvebounce said:
Unless it has been upgraded in firmware and I missed it I believe the 7D is not supposed to work at f8.

No, you are quite correct, the 7D is not designed to AF at f8. However, that being said, it DOES AF with the Tamron 1.4x teleconverter 95% of the time. If I keep it just under 300mm it will usually lock on pretty quickly. It's not 100% but when the lighting is good I like to use it.

The 1.4x works much, much better on my 70-300L with my 7D than it does on my 40D. I was mainly curious if the 1DIV can AF at f8 using the same 1.4x tele and my 70-300L.
