Why the delay for the Tamron 150-600?

Has Canon ever produced a super tele-zoom lens? I mean, something that goes into the 500-600mm range like this Tamron or the newly announced Sigma.

Wow. I know that there is the 200-400, but wonder why they don't make a lens like this now. Cost prohibitive?

Best Sensor Cleaning Products

Aglet said:
I won't tell you what else I use, it'll cause you nightmares.

Brillo pad and Clorox?

I just got the sticky gel stick- haven't used it yet, but I'll report back here when I do if I think of it- I have a 1DX and it is HORRIBLE for spots all over the sensor filter- it's a known problem with a defective mirror box assembly- (plastic parts rub against metal parts- flaking off bits of plastic, and the lubrication they used evidently dries out and flakes off and clings to the sensor filter usually in upper corners, and when bad, all over the sensor- like mine was) I posted about it in another thread- Anyways, Canon replaced the mirror box assembly, but now it's creating the problem with spots again- apparently they replaced the defe3ctive mirror box assembly with another defective mirror box assembly, and then told me 'I'm on my own from here on out' meaning they won't stand behind the replacement part- So evidently I'll have to pay through the nose if I want my current defective mirror box assembly replaced with yet another defective mirror box assembly- Swell, huh?

Anyways- as I said, I'll let you all know how the cleaning turns out-

will the samsung NX1 steal the show?

FEBS said:
Guys, guys,

Don't let the negativism of other threads here going on in this thread. Hp and Samsung both are very respectable companies and have very qualitative products. However, not every product is a topper, which is also not the case for Canon products. I have much more excellent product references of hp and Samsung then the impression that's created over here.

I've used about a dozen different models of HP printer. Every single one, whether a laser or inkjet, black-and-white or color, exhibited serious banding problems in gradients. They make very robust products that last a long time, so if that's your only measure of quality, they're great, but if image quality is a concern, they're universally a disaster as far as I can tell.

I'll readily admit that my experience with three different Samsung consumer products and my serious consideration of a fourth (only to reject it after finding numerous Amazon reviews saying that their refrigerators died within warranty and couldn't be fixed after multiple service attempts) isn't quite enough to call a pattern of epic fail, but it certainly doesn't meet my criteria for "respectable company". When your reviews look like a graphic EQ, with an approximately equal number of 5s and 1s, something is wrong.

Canon, Nikon, sure. I'd shoot with cameras from either one in a heartbeat. Panasonic, yes. JVC and Sony have been hit or miss. But by the time you get down to Samsung and LG, you're solidly into "cheap" territory, where it looks to me like there's a great deal of corner cutting to hit a price point. LG seems to be slightly better than Samsung in that regard, but you still have to scrutinize every model to make sure you aren't going to get a dud.

Here's another one: Nikon or Canon??
My guess is Nikon on this one. Partly cloudy day, yet you've got a lot of detail in the lifted shadows. The color on the trees also doesnt feel like the green from my Canons, though that could be processing.

If it's Canon, then I'd bet you blended exposures

Single exposure. Here is the original. I will let a few more guesses come in before disclosing the brand.... not that it matters of course. ;)

Another standard zoom advice topic

Tough call...

I liked the 24-105L when I had it, and made some of my favorite photos from it. Not particularly sharp but consistent. I tended to use mine @ 105mm alot and its cheap as chips second hand.

The 24-70 F/4L is a lens I loved to rag on because of its ludicrous price. Now that the price has been dropped, If your more interested in Macro and can sacrifice the extra reach, It's worth the money.

The Perfect Sensor

i don´t expect a perfect sensor.
I would be happy with a better sensor that beats Sonikons at high and low ISO.

8)

Why does it have to be a competition?

Because it is?

The Sonys EXMOR seems to be best 35mm sensor so it´s only normal to look at him as reference for future Canon sensors.

At least when you expect Canon to improve sensor performance in the future and not only DPAF.

When i found better film in the past i bought it, with sensors is unfortunately not that easy. :)

Thought back then i had long discussions about the best film too. ;D

Satisfied with the 16-35 f/4L. I don't really need anything else wider or faster.

Good for you. Not really the topic but good for you. :)
Not so great for you. Keep measuabating over your dreams.

In all fairness, while the 16-35 f/4 IS is a fantastic landscape lens, it still fails to do 14mm (which is a big deal for some landscape photogs) so I don't think it necessarily is an answer for Nikon's 14-24; sunstar also looks a bit unimpressive on the 16-35 f/4 IS from most photos I have seen. I think that a wider zoom lens than the 16-35 f/4 IS is on Canon's radar, but that lens may be the patented 11-24 f/4L rather than the 12-24 f/2.8L some have been wishing for. We will wait and see, but there may not be any more UWA action until 2015-2016 as the EF 16-35 f/4 IS and EF-S 10-18mm satisfied a good chunk of the market this year.

Carry on restrictions on South African Airways

So you guys reckon if I walk through with a gripped camera and 400mm f/5.6 around my neck, I'd be allowed through ::)

Just weighed my entire kit, 8.1kg.

As a South African, it's disappointing hearing about the prejudiced attitude of my countrymen. Disappointed but not surprised.

yep no problems. Done it with 70-200 before when i've been pinged and popped a couple of big primes in my jacket pockets to get the bag weight down.
They weigh it let you through then you put it all back in ::)

RPS vs Pixel King Pro

Hey all,

I recently purchased some Pixel Mago flashes and realized that they don't play well with my PW Flex/Mini system.

I tried these http://www.samys.com/p/Remote-Transmitters--Slaves/RSRT10C/Wireless-eTTL-Remote-Control-For-Canon-DSLR/142166.html and they work, but then I have to fumble through the camera menu to make adjustments to levels and such.... OR,

Do I spend, basically, double and get the Pixel King Pro triggers http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pixel-King-Pro-E-TTL-Wireless-Flash-TRIGGER-ONLY-with-LCD-Display-for-Canon-/281202092212?pt=Camera_Flash_Accessories&hash=item4178f368b4 and make the adjustments on the triggers instead?

I guess I am looking if anyone knows or has experience with the reliability of each or either. Thanks for any input you guys have!

Wasabi LP-E6 batteries and 5D3 with latest firmware...

Canon is rumored to be upgrading to the LP-E6N starting with the 7D MK II. You can bet that they are stepping up their anti-counterfeit campaign and making it tougher to counterfeit the Canon battery code.

As I understand it, a message will appear asking you if the battery is labeled as a Genuine Canon battery. If you say yes, that means you have a counterfeit battery, and the camera will not start up. If you say no, which means its labeled as a third party battery (Wasabi, for example), then you will be asked if you take responsibility and want to use it.

Will we see a refresh for the Canon 180mm f/3.5L USM Macro?

NancyP said:
Having just taken some macro photos of a slightly scared wild snake, I appreciate (and the snake appreciates) the working distance of the 180mm macro. The most recent snake portrait was of a hog-nose doing its characteristic neck flare (make like a cobra) display - "hey look at me, I am BIG" - it makes when spotting a stranger. I didn't have the heart to panic it to view its ultimate reaction to threat, which is to roll over and play dead. I have seen photos of individuals of this species playing dead.

When I shot macros of a venomous wild snake ("cottonmouth" aquatic rattlesnake), I really appreciated the generous working distance given by the 180mm plus 1.4X TC. The snake just sat there sunning itself and wondering what the fuss was about, didn't offer threat behavior. Cottonmouths threaten by opening their mouths wide to expose the white lining of the mouth, hence the nickname "cottonmouth". Next step after the gape is the strike.

You wouldn't happen to be in the sunshine state would you?

Sony does a "Canon" (manufacturer ethics)

Mt Spokane Photography said:
My HP 24 port smart switch died last week during a lightening storm (It was on a filtered UPS), I bought it in 2009, for about $200, so I was going to buy another, since I liked it. I checked the HP site, and their warranty calculator said the warranty was good until 2109 (100 year warranty??). I sent them a e-mail with serial number, and the other info, they overnighted a replacement to me, along with a return label.

Needless to say I was happy with the service.

Most of the procurve switches are "lifetime warranty" - assuming you don't live past 100 years that is :)

Thank you for your purchase (back in 2009) and for helping to feed my family!

5D mkIII vs A7s

I just got my A7s which was a hard decision after only ever shooting Canon. But the very few tests I've done are pretty amazing between the two cameras. I hope Canon makes me regret buying the A7s soon! Here are my first few tests.
