Neutral Density Filters - HELP !

Got my replacement adapter ring from my dealer. Great service btw: Calumet. From all the adapters I got, this looks ok. Still has those marks on either side, but not some specles or material damage as the other ones.

The ND pro glass looks ok too now, no yellow specles. I will look at that a bit closer when I have time.

So far I have then:
* W/A adapter ring
* CPL adapter ring
* filter folder
* ND 0.9 por glass

Next will be either another ND 0.9, a little stopper or a big stopper. Haven't found any realiable info about color casts about the higher ND ones.
Finally after that some soft grades an I am done.

Get rid of a 1D3 to make room for the inevitable 7D2?

the 1d3 values are by now in very grasual decline, you have very little to lose by keeping it for the time being.

perhaps a lot to gain, not least a known quantity.

7d2 will cost 20-30% more for early adopters.

7d2 will need a couple of fw revisions to get it working sweet.

7d2 might not tick all your boxes... folk think of it as an action orientated camera, I think of it as canons first serious video dslr (it was the first with manual exposure from launch, the first with a pal mode from launch, the first with a dedicated video switch) so the new 7d might be the first with a 3x imaging block. it might be friggin massive. it might bethe first with xlrs built in! it might take the a7s route of reduced mp count for cleaner 4k video scaling.

I don't know. neither do you.

but you do know your 1d3.

Nobody apart from camera anoraks are going to look at a beast like the 1d3 and think, ooh that isn't a 1dx. or a 7d2.
And camera anoraks aren't generally the best photographers. hung up on specs. technically focused. boring.

Care more about your images, and what no 7d2 or anybody else can bring to them... you!

Might you take better pics with a 7d2? possibly. but not yet. so keep the 1d3

the 7d2 has been inevitable for the last 5 years.

Teleconverter for 100mm 2.8l

I say make sure you use a good macro tripod such as a Redged, the Canon dual Macro flash and a focusing rail like the Novoflex Castel-Q. Along with the 100 you'd have an amazing kit with a steady image. I've used mine with the Tamron SP 1.4 TC (same as the higher end Kenko) but the IQ def degrades. If used with the right tools, such as above) you have fantastic cropping ability if the image needs it. Well, ymmv but it works great for me on a 5D3.

Spontaneous Separation of 5D3 from 70-200 II??

While waiting for Canon to reinforce the lens release button, I strongly recommend getting a set of Optech Uni-loops and connecting them to the lug of your camera plate and to the BR carabiner.
Costs $6 and provides great insurance, without altering the position of your camera+lens combo.

Review: Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT

The saddest thing is the Battery level indicator is not on LCD, and itshould!!
You have no idea when the battery is going to die! That is the basic necessity for every battery operated devices.
If using speedlite, we can tell by the recharging duration, but not the trigger. Actually I wishthere is a battery bar level for speedlite too.

Eos7D mk2, How disappointed will you be if . . .?

Maybe Canon has decided to finally make some pro-grade lenses to go with the 7D, and is waiting until they can launch both at once.

All the Pro grade lenses (the "L" lenses) will work on the 7D. Do you mean that they will make pro grade EF-S (crop sensor) lenses? To do that, they will need a pro grade body. A 1Dx with an APS-C sensor.

Of course that's what I mean. 15 years into the digital age, and Canon makes a superb APS format camera (the 7D), and yet no professional grade lenses designed specifically for the format. Meanwhile, M43 and Fuji are rounding out some really good lens lineups for their smaller cameras.

This whole "L lenses work on APS sensors" thing is beyond idiotic. You knew full well I meant designed for the format. Only Pentax has bothered to make the appropriate lenses for their APS format cameras. But Canon continues to add 18-xxx mm superzooms. They should have had a 58mm f/1.2 lens designed for portraiture a decade ago. A 50-135mm f/2.0 would be an amazing sports lens. And of course a 15-45mm f/2.0. And that's just for starters.

Nikon's been just as stupid, and for their most profitable cameras. There's no direct upgrade path for either camera company. Madness.

There is, in my opinion some truth to your core point here. Both Canon and Nikon in order to keep their feet in both worlds and protect full frame markets have made some interesting compromises.

7D the new 6Ti?

I still think its more likely that Canon takes the whole Rebel line Mirrorless at some point. Call it a 6Ti perhaps. But eh.... who knows. If I could get a camera with the same features as a T5i, and engineer it as a mirrorless (zero moving parts) camera that had OLED EFV technology and a sensor with faster readout speeds, that might be interesting.

Your Bucket List - photography travel destinations?

I currently live in the Netherlands. Since I got serious about photography I've been to:

Japan
Turkey
India
Schotland
Cyprus
Oman & UAE
Costa Rica
Angola
Vietnam
Namibia
Cornwall
Malaysia

Pictures here: http://www.mrsfotografie.nl/reizen

Next up is Malaysia again, hopefully. A truly fabulous destination (I've lived there 12 yrs). I think I can get better photo's too because last time I was there I was very new to photography.

Other destinations?

Maybe Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Chile, something exotic... we'll see.

One other hoped-for feature on the 7D2

Auto-ISO + EC in M mode is something I've wanted Canon to include in their DSLRs for a long time. I like to shoot birds and many times there are situations where I would want to keep shutter and aperture locked while allowing the camera choose ISO, BUT still be able to adjust EC myself. This would be handy in situations like shooting against bright sky for example.

My current "solution" or workaround with 60D and 400mm f5.6L is to use Tv mode with auto-ISO and adjust EC if needed. This works mainly because for the most of the time I'm aperture limited and the aperture stays wide open. If there is a lot of light so that auto-ISO is already at minimum and the camera starts to adjust aperture, I then select faster shutter speed the keep the aperture at desired value (by default I use 1/1600s and adjust it if needed). However, I'm not quite sure about the "logic" that the camera uses between adjusting ISO or aperture as sometimes apeture starts to go smaller even if ISO is around 400 and there would still be some headroom to lower it down.

Canon EF 50 f/1.2L Goes Missing at Canon Germany

It's difficult to make a 50mm 1.4 with IS, because the IS-Group is of course enlarging the whole formula. So, if the lense gets longer by 10mm, the focal length mostly get's longer, too. And with the same optical calculation (and therefor aperture-diameter) the f-number increases.

I would really like to see a new 50mm 1.0, just to show the finger to the competitors (for fun :)), but after all I even stop down my 85 1.2 II. Scenes where you really need f1.2 are rare. I mostly use the lense @f2 or f2.2... so a 50mm 1.8 is quite nice for portraits.

If you need the ultimate shallow DOF, use a larger sensor ;)

Live View Display blackout after shot? 70D

The 70D and X100S are quite different designs of camera of course.
The 70D is a DSLR, which whilst offering an improved 'live view' experience compared to most DSLRs is still optimized around the use of the OVF - particularly for action shots.

I don't think there is anything 'wrong' in what you or the camera are doing - It is just the way Canon DSLRs work and I guess it just doesn't conform to the experience you were expecting coming from a mirrorless camera.

Lensrentals Canon UWA FF lens comparison

Re: A nice UWA lenses comparison

Very nice comparison indeed. Roger always does a very thorough job. The new 16-35 f4 seems to be a real gem.

Especially this bit says a lot: "The MTF charts clearly show the TS-E is better at . . . tilting and shifting. That’s huge for me, because I often used it as a straight lens, never intending to use the tilt-shift features, simply because of its resolution."

What do you Cheap Out on?

Actually I'd recommend getting the Phottix aeon or Hahnel Giga T instead. For a few more dollars (still half that of Canon) you'd get an RF intervalometer, or you can connect it directly if you want more reliability. The wireless option provides you with a great remote trigger so you can be in the pics.
Just doubles the versatility.

+1

I have the hähnel Giga T Pro II and it's excellent. Vello has a wireless version of the ShutterBoss, but I went with the hähnel version ofer the other options for the small size of the transmitter. It's certainly not my little Canon RC-1, but that doesn't work with the 1D X :'( . The hähnel RF release is the only transmitter small enough to conceal in my hand if I'm in the shot.
