Then again, I've worked both at Apple and at an embedded Linux startup, so it's possible that I'm just a bit biased against RTOSes. :)

Interesting observations, though I (I never did rtos programing) like to add this theory: It's easier to debug and build a reliably system because if it works once then it'll work every time sine timing is fixed and this no problem. Do Nikon and/or Sony and other companies use multitasking non-rtos designs in their cameras?

Except that modern RTOSes don't really work that way unless you're dealing with microcontrollers. If I understand correctly, modern RTOSes are usually a bizarre kludge of multitasking and non-multitasking parts, enforcing partial real-time behavior through scheduling. The bigger difference between a modern RTOS and Linux is that the RTOS likely has a much smaller kernel footprint, but as a result, has a lot less functionality.

Albuquerque Panoramas by Hollywood Film Maker (Revised Link)

Here's a short video feature on an award winning movie maker turned landscape photog. He's an Albuquerque resident (transplant from LA) making a very good business for himself.

BTW, notice his choice of camera/lens combination, and his (homemade) tripod mount!

Sorry, the original link didn't work very well! Here's a link that actually works on YouTube:

Tamron lenses --> annoying zoom ring

FEBS said:
+1 on your remarks. However, also canon has a few lenses I which they changed the zoom and the focus ring.

What I also don't like is the fact that the zoom ring is behaving the opposite compared to canon. For this reason I was frequently missing a shot with my tamron 18-270 as I did zoom in the wrong direction.

They are the same direction as nikon. Since I primarily use the tamron 70-200 and canon 100-400 I hardly notice that it's opposite of most canons.

Canon PowerShot SX60 HS Update [CR2]

rowlandw said:
Having the SX40 I skipped the SX50 to see about the SX60. I will be very interested if it has a larger sensor like the Sony RX10 and the Panasonic FX1000. I may hold off on getting the FX1000 until the SX60 issues.

A large sensor 100X zoom?? It would be so large that it would have to mount on a truck. The high optical zoom range is only practical with tiny sensors. So don't expect that in a super zoom.

Long-term Review | Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Hello,

Very nice review. Like this review a lot as this is one without any scientific explanation but ful of practical use. All those other test should in fact adding a real chapter like this. The figures for a lens might be very good. But please let's always see the practice.
Your different types of use for this lens do really show the power of this lens. I know I can make fabulous photos with it, but do find not that many times on my body. Mostly coming from the other lenses I have, but for sure this is a real great lens, with an exceptional Hybrid iS, that can be used in many situations.

Canon 10-22 vs 10-18

KeithBreazeal said:
I love the old 10-22mm. Yes, it isn't built like a tank. If it was, it probably would have tweaked the 7D's lens mount. It went to Canon(CPS) in 3 bags. Got it back in 3 business days. The repair was replacing everything except the front lens assembly- new mount, iris, servo, and the entire inner lens group. Cost? $59.

$ 59 to replace everything? Surely that cannot be standard pricing that applies to mere mortals like us.
In any case, this reinforces what I said. The 10-18 is cheaper and will be more of a crumple zone ;)

As I said, I loved my 10-22 as well and it was one of the reasons I was balking at going FF and settling for an inferior UWA (the 16-35/4 was a distant thought back then).
But now, someone without an UWA should have no reason to drop $ 600 on it instead of getting a 10-18 for $ 300. It IS a no-brainer.

Deciding Between Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS and Canon 28mm f/2.8 IS

RuleOfThirds said:
Today I went shooting in Atlanta and brought along my Canon Rebel GII 35mm camera. I attached my 40mm f/2.8 STM on it, knowing full well that 28mm is 44.8mm on crop sensor. It was simply amazing to shoot at that lens and camera combination for an extended period of time. It's wide enough for me. So, I'll be getting the 28mm f/2.8 IS USM.

Thanks for all of your help! When I get it, I'll update the thread with my impressions.

Please update with some photos, too. I love to watch street photography.
Cheers!

DPP and Lightroom 5.5 JPG file export problem

Pretty interesting, just saw the release notes for the new adobe camera raw 8.6 Release Candidate:

"Fix issue with JPEG images saved by Camera Raw not readable in some external applications."

I guess there will be a fix for LR5.5.

Metabones Smart Adaptor IV for Sony A7/A7R/A7S & Canon Lenses

This must be a hoax by Metabones. Look what they say on the B&H site:

"Autofocus speed is very slow and inadequate for most moving subjects."

The A7R autofocus being what it is (slow and inaccurate in any but ideal lighting and contrast) this "new" product is tentamount to theft.

Support by Metabones is also awfull by the way.

jrista et al, Why Astrophotography?

Boy am I feeling old.. Astrophotography was the first thing that interested me. I bought an OM-1, had a 12.5" reflector made, and bought a Bill Schaefer mount. Used to cook my film myself.

I am so behind times, it is amazing how technology has taken over. I got into computers when analog to digital was coming into play. Writing software for machines.

I still have all my old equipment. Is there a way to computerize the old Schaefer mount. It has an old drive corrector that works. But, it is ancient.

Been thinking about having the mirror re-coated on the reflector, and playing around with it some.

Gary

Scott Rosen [email protected] might be able to help you with your mount. His site says he has put steppers on his Schaefer.

You need more than just steppers, though. You need to track accurately enough to actually take long exposures. Even if you purchase a mount like an Atlas or ZEQ25, you still need to guide in order to be able to expose for more than about a minute or so. Just slapping steppers on a mount will get you longer than 20-30 second exposures, but not long enough to really do any kind of deep exposures that are necessary to lift detail above the noise floor (which is actually quite high on a DSLR). You would also need to jury-rig something that made those stepper motors controllable via a guider...either via ASCOM Pulse Guiding or an ST-4 guide port.

It's probably best just to buy a used lower and mount. You can find a ZEQ25 for maybe $500 used, if that if you find a good deal. A used Atlas or EQ6 can be found as low as $700 used. A Sirius/EQ5 might be found for as littel as $500-600. All of those mounts are guidable...the only real issue would be capacity, but so long as your not using larger scopes, you should be fine. You could even get an AT6RC for $400 new, or as little as $250 used, and have a real nice Ritchey-Chretein astrograph.

Patent: Another Multi Layer Related Sensor Patent from Canon

LetTheRightLensIn said:
Latest rumor out mentions that the dual pixel AF will have a radical, ground-breaking update and that that is basically what the new 7D2 sensor tech is about and not so much about still image quality improvements at all.

Another rumor from weeks back hinted that the 7D2 will introduce some new tech and that the 5D4 will get the rest (that one implied more image improvements for the 5D4). Who knows.

Got any links to these rumors? I haven't seen this on CR...

Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II [CR1]

AlanF said:
The TDP tests above are done on full frame sensors. It is a different story on crop, which shows up the deficiencies on the less-than-tack-sharp lenses. On the 60D, for example, there is clear daylight between the 400 mm f/5.6 L at f/5.6 and the 400 mm f/2.8 L II at f/5.6.

Especially with a 2xTC:
