Ten years ago I wouldn't have thought to be able to use a 4/600 LII as a "walkaround" lens, but now I know that it is perfectly possible (for me). But then, I am quite tall and heavy myself. My wife for instance would be dragged down by the mere weight. And of course my suggestion for the OP is not to take along a 600 mm. But it really depends on what you want to shoot!

I tend never to take my big lens (500 f/4L II) into cities. They just attract too much attention. I shot a big composite of the Houses of Parliament, and half my time was spent dealing with tourists (but it's too big and heavy that I would worry about anyone running off with it :) ). How do you find that aspect?

Gura Gear Acquires Tamrac Brands & Assets

Tamrac was pretty big like Calumet Photo was pretty big -- they were everywhere. Tamrac products were in every Best Buy I ever walked into. I'm guessing they are like a Tiffen or Domke sort of well-known name with a jillion products with lots of lots of inventory. I'm also guessing that's probably what killed them. Brick and mortar is dying for electronics / music / etc., so what's bad for Best Buy is doubly bad for third parties like Tamrac that need a store front to succeed.

GuraGear, in contrast, is a 21st century (almost Kickstarter-y) business that shuns a large footprint in brick and mortar establishments and is living and/or dying online. Their success is based on the innovation of their products and the quality of their designs. Further, they overcome 'it is the right size for me?' problems a la shoe ordering with Zappos -- lots of pictures and videos and reviews. Right now they are on a roll, earning followers and building their reputation.

I paid a lot money for my GG bag, but they back it up with great service. They found out that my bag was part of a batch that lacked certain stitching in the laptop compartment and replaced mine very efficiently without fuss.

PHOTOS IN WORLD CUP 2014

Dear friends.
Some of our friends ask us about the world cup photography by Canon equipment.
After I look at the internet( about 1,000 +), I find some photos of the photographers in this world cup, that use a few Canon Big white lenses.

Nah, she is a keeper. Brought it home and she just rolled her eyes. Told me to "have fun," laughed and went about doing her own things.

She's pretty understanding of my cameras and motorcycle obsessions.

So, you ready for 300, 400, 200-400 and/or 600mm ;)

Oh I'm definitely ready! My bank account, on the other hand, is not. :( All those sound wonderful though!

That's tape ;) I figured for hire/ID related purposes, maybe?... but YES! There are photographers with non-gripped bodies with larger viewfinders and markings where the 5D3's 'Mark III' badge resides - and I do recall struggling to see a mode dial. These were being shot by people also wielding 1Dx looking bodies - would Sports Pros shoot something as slow as the 5D3? These bodies were equipped with much shorter lenses...

Yeah I kinda figured tape, but it seemed to be unusually reflective, almost flashy fluorescent, most photogs don't use that sort of tape for marking, but I guess these ones did hah.

Respectfully disagree:

1) The 7D2 will cost more than the 6D. That's a near certainty given how feature-laden the 7D2 will be and how precipitously the 6D price is dropping. Crop and FF will therefore have some overlap in pricing.

2) Some people desperately need the 1.6x reach a crop brings. It obviates the need to buy epic superteles for $10k+. You get 90% as good IQ for half the cost and half the weight -- that single value proposition says that crop won't be abandonware for a very long time.

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 : possible issue?

Update: I went to a camera shop today with the lens and was able to test it on a 650D. No issue whatsoever. The lens focused fast and perfectly. No 'overshooting' or 'hunting' issue, even though it was pretty dark inside the shop. Nothing wrong with the lens :)

So I believe it must indeed have been a set up (or other) issue with the initial camera body.

Experiences with recent Canon premium/L lens upgrade tell us that it's more likely the new version will be much more expensive to cover upcoming high-mp sensors while the to-be-obsoleted version stays roughly at the same price.

The old version might even rise in price because a lot of people realize the above and demand rises quicker than supply from people "upgrading"... this was the 24-70mk1 vs mk2 effect. Lesson: Don't wait for lens upgrades to snatch the old version at a budget price, this only works for camera bodies and flashes.

35L vs 35/2 IS

Yes, I've heard about that. Not that I normally would stop it down but it is still annoying.

I've just read the TDP review and one thing that has never crossed my mind before is the minimum focus distance and magnification. By using my 25mm extension tube I could literally use it as a 1:1 macro. Not as flexible as a real macro of course but still very interesting and unexpected indeed...
