cheap AF-S 55-250 STM sharper than L series AF 70-300 USM

Interesting lens. I ran it up against the 24-105L and they are almost identical. I was looking for something light weight for hikes or a lens for the "to go bag". I bought a SL-1 for my pole cam and that little camera is actually quite impressive. Maybe the 55-250 might just do it. The price is right, that's for sure.

upgrading from a 7D to a 70D

I sold my 7D and got a 70D plus $200 cash during Christmas when the price was $949. Here's what I got: noticeably faster AF for sports so fewer OOF shots, better high ISO performance, articulated screen eliminates the need for my angle finder so I can shoot lower to the ground or above my head and still compose, articulated screen can fold to protect itself, silent shutter, and I can use the same batteries as the 7D and 5D2/3. Here's what I gave up: 0.5fps, snob appeal of a semi-pro body, weight, and weather sealing. All in all, my keeper rate has substantially increased.

An Era of Mergers?

I have a hard time seeing Samsung as one of the smaller players. Maybe not so big in photography yet, but it'd be foolish to bet against them. They might not go after the pro market, but possibly pretty much everything else. Time will tell.
I think I would generally agree with this. Right now they're a smaller fish. But Samsung is willing to manufacture in numerous mature markets. I would expect their camera market share to gradually grow over time, especially at the entry level in the nearer future. The recent Canon announcement to exit low end cameras should benefit them.
Yes - I meant that Samsung were currently a smaller player in the camera industry. Overall, they have a stated goal of becoming the largest manufacturer of retail goods in the world.

Hood on C 300/2.8 L IS USM

Hi Guy,
I stored mentioned lens with hood attached as I rarely put it down. Today I decided to pack light but stayed surprise as I was not able to remove hood from lens. In the end I managed with applying some force, but another surprise came as I m not able to attach it back in regular or reverse way.
Did you faced any similar problem?
What could the solution be?

Thanks

Very interesting article. 360 TB WOW That's a lot. Thanks for sharing.
I remember wire-wrapping 8Kbyte memory cards to replace the obsolete 1Kbyte ferrite bead cards on the mainframe :) and how excited we were when hard drive prices dropped below a dollar a kilobyte ($9,995.00 for a 10Mbyte drive)..... we have come a long way.

Crop sensors better than full frame for macro photography?

eml58 said:
I was hesitant to make a comment here, but things seem to have calmed down a little.

I do a lot of Macro, albeit it's all Underwater Imaging, I have two set ups for Underwater.

1DMK IV in a Seacam Housing, I find the APS-H format just get's me closer and for my Macro Imaging works better than anything else I've tried (FF/APS-C), primarily it allows me to better utilise the 100f/2.8 Macro L IS.

For everything else I use the 5DMK III again in a Seacam Housing, FF seems to the wide angle Imaging better than the 1.3 Crop of the APS-H format.

For me - shooting underwater macro - I am very happy with my 7d + 100L - (granted the 1d series + housing is a little out of my price range)

The reason I like aps-c is because of the greater working distance (not always necessary) but there are some shots I am sure I couldn't get on full frame underwater (and there is no port for the 180L on my ikelite setup).

I do plan to put together a FF rig sometime soon, but I will keep my 7d mainly for underwater macro.

Just my opinion in regards to my shooting.

Review: Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 Distagon T*

Eldar said:
Thanks Edward. If we don´t have more solid info of a high MP Canon body before this summer, I think I have to get one and try. It seems to me it will make manual focus a bit easier and it is also a bit tempting to try out the sensor. My use will be slow and non-action photography with the TS-E lenses and the two Zeiss lenses I have, so some of the speed issues you have will not bother me much. I am a bit puzzled over the lack of lenses for this body though and I am not overly enthusiastic over the need for the adaptor.

Hi Eldar, the Metabones adaptor I have is the EF-E Mount Version III, make sure if you get the Metabobes you get the version 3.

It's actually not much of a problem, as I only have Canon Mount lenses the Metabones can stay on the a7r except when I'm using the Zeiss EF 35, I have not noticed any degradation of IQ using the Metabones, but I have to assume there is a small amount.

And your right, if you keep your Imaging to slow/static action the a7r is a pretty reasonable Camera with a very good sensor, plus the cost of the a7r has made it attractive, especially now, I think the a7r can be purchased for a lot less now than when I purchased it in Late December 2013.

Alaska Vacation Suggestions

To see what you might be in for feel free to check out my Alaskan pictures at www.flickr.com/photos/corysteiner/
Sounds like you're off to a good start.

Awesome eagle shots, what camera and lens did you use? What parts of Alaska did you see?

Depending on whether your budget allows, I can heartily recommend Camp Denali Lodge. You cannot drive into the park on your own. The interior buses are an option but the Camp Denali bus is more comfortable and less crowded and is art of the package. The place is spectacular and even the views from the place are amazing. Add a few of the included outings (multiple hikes with naturalists every day) and you will be in photography heaven. A 3 or 4 day adventure there will really give you onsite into the tundra and mountains to add to the typical southeastern water based adventures. Do bring a tripod and CPL's for your gear and consider ND filters. And bring something longer because there is an incredible amount of wildlife in Denali, but they are not too close. Found myself using the 100-400 (sometimes with a 1.4x) on the tripod a lot. If I were to do it again (actually that should be "when" not" if"), I'll rent a 300 f/2.8 with a 2x or longer prime like a 500 or 600 with IS.

Camp Denali Lodge looks like a great option, we will have to see if we can fit that into our trip budget; I hope we can.

I'm still debating long tele lens options. A 300mm f/2.8 II and 2x III would be awesome, but renting for two weeks would cost as much as it would to buy 35mm f/2 IS (on my short list of desired lenses). I may rent one for a shorter stretch or settle for an f/4 tele. I'm also considering buying a Tamron 150-600, which should be long enough.

How to protect gear from fine sand?

JustMeOregon said:
At one time or another I think that I've gone with all of the tour operators that have a tribal permit for Upper Antelope. I really like the guys at Overland Canyon Tours, check'em out and don't forget to make reservations well in advance:

http://www.overlandcanyontours.com/upperant

A few things to keep in mind are (in no rational order):

Don't freak-out over the crowds at Upper Antelope. I've seen pro-level photographers (who were not "emotionally prepared" for the throngs) curse their guide to the bone, throw gear in frustration, & storm out of the canyon.

Most all of the tour guides work together incredibly well. The "regular tour" guides do a great job of keeping their tourists moving quickly past the tripods on the "Photo tours." So well in fact that a 30-second exposure (standard stuff in the slots) will generally do a good job of making all the people disappear.

If you are still frustrated by John-Q-Public getting in your shot, just tilt your camera up a bit. Without the canyon floor in the shot, there will generally not be any obvious horizon or "proper" orientation, so just go ahead & tilt your camera in any way necessary to get Little Timmy out of the shot.

Remember, your basically taking pictures in a cave. Your eyes have adjusted, so you can see just fine, but it really is pretty dark. So under-expose accordingly. That's how you get the deeply saturated dramatic photos you see everywhere.

Don't forget Lower Antelope Canyon! It's smaller, tighter, and you don't have the "light-beams" of its big brother (the more famous Upper Antelope), but it's less crowded and more relaxed. Also, at Lower Antelope if you can convince the caretakers that your gear is "Professional" enough, you can be allowed to enter on your on without having to be part of a guided tour. And before you ask, I have no idea how they judge gear to be professional-enough. I'm generally dragging-ass with more than $20K of gear, while my wife is happily bouncing around with a 5-year-old Rebel, and we both have always been waived in without any problem.

Finally don't go just once and think that you've seen it all. The light in the morning, mid-day, and afternoon is dramatically different. Pictures of the exact same sandstone formation will look completely different taken at different times of the day.

Enjoy...

Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. Really appreciate it. Hope it'll be a fruitful trip.

FF Sharper than crop?

This is why I have said (and got pounced on for it), that a future 50+ MP full frame camera, is rarely if ever going to fully resolve detail on all of its pixels on most every lens there is...

I wouldn't "pounce" on you for this, but I would disagree. If we were to scale up current APS-C densities they would equal 45 MP or more on FF. The number of lenses and aperture combinations that yield excellent detail and sharpness on my 7D and M are quite large actually. Granted it's more challenging to hold that across the frame on 35mm, but I don't doubt that a 50 MP FF body would prove excellent with good glass and a tripod or IS. I think we would be looking at 75-100 MP before there would be hardly any lenses or apertures that benefit.

Here is one of my favorite images that I shot with it. It's not full size, because I try not to show those. Camera was the 50D.

Beautiful.

Thanks very much! I still think I have to disagree with you though. There aren't that many lenses that are sharper than the 200 f/2L, but yet the 70D can't use but about half its pixels to resolve detail through it (at least when wide open at f/2). And the 70D is equal to the middle of about a 50 MP full frame's...frame. I'm not saying you couldn't appreciate the sharpness of the world's best lenses with such full frame sensors...it's just that you could only appreciate it in a small part of the center at wider apertures, and perhaps up to maybe 65% of the sensor area when closed to optimum arperture (especially if we go to 60+ MP).

When you discuss how sharp your results have been with an 18 MP crop sensor, you're forgetting just how much softer the lens becomes once you go larger than that sensor, it seems to me. Discussing the current 22MP 5D3 sensor, has nothing to do with what a 50MP sensor would look like on the same lens.

This surely is one reason why Canon has expressed interest in medium format. I suspect that 10 years from now, medium format will be what we are all using, or beginning to use. And full frame digital cameras will be priced like the Rebels of today (adjusted for inflation of course). But this assumes we will still have a currency, or even a civilization then, and there are no guarantees of that.

Dual ST-E3s

As a side note, if you need to take shots freely between the two bodies then using speedlites can be tricky because of their slowish recycle times. A useful accessory will be CP-E4 battery packs which will speed up recycle time. And in terms of camera settings you can also use higher ISO and wider apertures to reduce the flash output requirements.

Let us know how you setup and what the results are like. Best of luck ;)

Nikon D4S IQ

It seems D4S is now a worthy competitor to 1DX.

It seems you're jumping to conclusions…

From the original article in which those comparison pictures on NR were posted: "The following pictures are all 100% crops of straight out of camera jpeg fine."

So the real conclusion is that the D4s has a better JPEG conversion engine than the D4. BFD. If you want to draw any conclusions about IQ, you need to compare RAW images.

Maybe you are right, it's too early to tell but somebody tested it already albeit they didn't bother to expound more on the matter. They even didn't bother to say if they tested using RAW or JPEG. We'll see then...

Anyone want to trade a $5 amazon gift card for my Adorama $10 off $150 coupon?

I'm not sure if they sent it to me because I sent back a lens where the box was damaged... but I don't think i'm going to make a purchase from Adorama in the next 2 weeks (claims it expires in 15 days)... so I'd rather it not go to waste and I'd really like to get a little cash back.

I only have one... so message me... or just respond here..

No biggy either way.

Why I Chose a Canon EOS 6D over a 5D MKIII

We have a rental business where we have Canon 5dMKII, 5dMKIII, 1Dx and I have a 6d personally. There is no doubt that the 5dMKIII is a better overall package to the 6d its AF system is far superior as is its construction and user menus, the joypad & jog stick are also far better. What is not so clear cut using the same lens is the IQ and in every technical test we have performed they simply cannot be seperated apart from low light where the 6d actually pips the 5dMKIII.
This is looking at both from a purely technical standpoint as each user will hold different views on ergonomics, weight etc. The 6d is not a camera for rental its simply not robust enough for everyday use or customisable enough but if this was a test simply about IQ they are equals but then why should that be an issue?
