Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer.

.....and I'm at a complete loss how they manage to sell used gear at all looking at the sky-high prices even for completely outdated gear.
I’ve noticed the prices are quite high, well that’s one less thing to consider on my agenda while there, I can concentrate on snapping the sights instead!!
To be honest I was wondering if I was going to find an affordable used 10-20mm Sigma, but that looks highly unlikely at the prices I’ve observed, I can get the variable aperture version for the equivalent of 360 Euro brand new in Dubai, ohh well that’s that idea out the window!!
Thanks for all your help guys, CR rules 8)

Our First Robin of 2014

We are seeing different birds every week now, so the migration is starting. The Robins around here seem to migrate. It seems a bit early, we had some nice weather in January, but in February it turned to below zero and warmed up enough to snow.
The cold weather contributed to my blowing a hydraulic line on my tractor. The hydraulic fluid gets really thick when its cold, even though my tractor is stored in a barn. Last winter, I blew a radiator which cracked the head, which set me back a ton of money. Diesel engine parts cost more than camera parts, so do new radiators.

Another Mention of a New Macro Lens in 2014 [CR1]

mb66energy said:
I own the 60mm and the 100 mm USM Macro-both do NOT extend and use (including the 180mm Macro) after Canon's USA home page a
"Focus Adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM"
- so I do not understand your arguments - or is there a difference between "inner focusing system" and "internal focusing"?

I stand corrected, these lenses do indeed use internal focusing and lose a fair amount of focal length at minimum focus distance. The 100L goes down to 75mm. I'm not sure people would want this for longer focal length macro lenses, though. There's already enough bitching and moaning about Sigma's 120-300 and its loss of focal length at MFD.

Tamron Announces Full Frame 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD

androiduk said:
Well, I was all ready to buy the 6D 24-105 combo next month and Tamron comes out with this. If the price is reasonable and image quality is similar to Canon...

Image quality similar to the Canon 24-105 is a big if. The Canon 28-300L delivers IQ similar to the 24-105L, and the former is big, heavy and expensive - the prices you pay for not sacrificing IQ.

DxO & MTF Charts ... a little help please!

candc said:
I read the Sony document. It is not a highly detailed technical paper but a summary of sorts. I found some useful info in the article. What I learned is that when interpreting an mtf chart the relative closeness of a dashed and solid line pair will generally indicate the quality of the defocused areas. That is to say if the dashed and dotted lines of the line pairs are close together or superimposed then that indicates the lens will have good bokeh. I didn't know that was something that could be measured but I guess it can. Maybe its not all telling but apparently a good indicator?

Aye, what Sony says is true. When the lines are on top of each other, you generally have very flat out of focus blur circles. They tend to be uniform from the center of the circle to the edge of the circle. When there is divergence, any number of alternate forms of blur circles can arise. Some even divergence and a relatively even falloff actually means the lens still has some spherical aberration, which usually results in good boke as well. When the meridional lines are all squirrely, then your boke will usually be pretty nasty.

Samyang will start producing AF lenses

BL said:
As long as they continue to offer MF options, sounds great!

A won't lie, a really big part of the allure are the amazing price points and solid performance.

14mm 2.8 anyone?

Oh no, I already have the MF version! I really don't like having to change my lenses all the time and I'm very comfortable with MF but I'd really like an AF version of this lens. And I would probably keep my 85/1.4 instead of getting rid of it if it had AF.

Canon Announces New Superzoom PowerShot SX700 HS & Rugged PowerShot D30

Any chance of a waterproof point and shoot camera being released that shoots in raw? (This excludes the newer Nikon one, I want a pocketable camera).

Are you familiar with CHDK, bgran8?... Those guys hack lots of Canon's Point & Shoot Cameras to unlock extra features and I think one of their primary goals is to unlock RAW shooting - have a nosey around the internets, they may have already broken open the innards of earlier waterproof shooters :D

SLR Magic Anamorphic Lens Adapter : Thoughts for use on 5D3 and EF Lenses?

Well, looking so far, from what I can tell, this filter won't work with many of my best lenses. <P>
It appears it will work with my 40mm 2.8 pancake and my 85mm 1.8, but my L lenses are all too large for it to mount to.

Still, VERY interesting, but right now I have a 50L and the 100L macro on my lens list to buy next, so barring a lottery win, I may have to put this on the back burner behind those lenses.

Then again, who knows what will happen one weekend after a few beers and impulse online shopping hits...

:)

I'm keeping my eye on this however, it does look very interesting.

Where do you sell used lenses

RustyTheGeek said:
I think everyone here at CR would like and appreciate if CR would start a trade page to sell used gear to other CR members, etc. Sort of a CraigsList for CR. Call it CansList or CRList or something. :)

Well this also would be Craig's list wouldn't it? :P

FredMiranda is really nice. I bought several items and sold my 10-22 there. Super easy and nice experience all round.

Advice: Should I sell my 24-70mm f2.8L (I) and get the 24-70mm f4L IS?

Hjalmarg1 said:
I have read that the 24-70mm f4L IS has less distortion than the old 24-70mm f2.8L, in addition to the Image stabilization and lighter weight so I am considering to get the IS version. I don't shoot much portrait and fast pace events so, I think the 4-stop IS may help me more on low light situations. I am just a hobbyiest, not a pro?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

You will notice the difference! I've had 5 of the old 24-70mm L's and was unhappy with all of them. Even my 24-105mmL was slightly better.

Just curious ...

You did nothing wrong, your post was merely a victim of tidying up. At the time you made the post there was already a thread on the review that was several posts long. We often try to keep a discussion to a single thread, either merging in the more recent post/thread if there's novel information in it, or deleting the newer post if it's a straight duplicate.

The other thread is in the Gear Talk > Lenses section.

*faint* I didn't even click that before . . . Craig started it??? I thought it was a random poster trying to get us going again.
It was a slow news day... :P

A tip of the hat to Canon Customer Service

chris_w_digits said:
You probably are. I got mine mailed off on the 3rd. Always read all the fine print and be sure you follow every instruction to the letter. If you don't, they can use it as an excuse not to give you the rebate. I pre-submitted online and they've received mine. I really wish they'd do away with mail-in rebates and just let the retailer charge the lower proce directly.
The story I heard on this one (which Canon did for the last few years) was that the retailers had to submit the rebate information and were very unhappy with the process and how long it took to get their reimbursements.

Pole Vaulting

As for EXIF, these are all 1/800 sec and f/2.8. ISOs are 6400 for all but the "over the bar" shots, which are 3200. Our track is NOT well lit. All are with the Canon 300 f/2.8L Mk II -- an amazing lens by all measures and not that heavy at all. No monopod used--all hand-held.

No, I haven't compared the original and the Mark II 300mm f/2.8L -- just got the latter (used here) as a loaner from a VERY generous friend.

Need a new office printer, what do you guys have?

I recently picked up a Lexmark cx410dte.

This is the only color laser with 1200 x 1200 output at less than $1k USD. True PS3 too.

It will do wireless, if you buy the wireless dongle. Or, connect it to a wired network and a wireless router.

It will *not* do wireless/network/USB all at the same time.

Color print output is not glossy and plastiky looking. The "printer evaluation image" from breathing color prints out very nicely.

The Lexmark mobile print utility works, at least for Android.

You have to use the included Lexmark utility to initiate scans- Windows will not recognize the machine as a WIA device.

It is a true business class machine and challenging to set up. I had to spend some time with tech support (Lexmark and Adobe) to get the scan features up and running.

Lexmark has a toner recycling program.

I also have an OKI c530, but it is not a multifunction machine. Print output colors are also very good, but the print is shiny. I think OKI has a MF machine based on that model series.
