Sorry guys, still healing up and trying to keep up with my day job & the teaching job I've had to take on to make up for my lost photography income :(. I have the night off, so I'll try to do it tonight.

Sorry to hear things are not going well. Get healed up and if you have time down the road, do the test.

I do not plan to use ML on my 6D until it reaches a beta level and that might be another year or two, so myself and probably many others, would be interested in your results.
Thank you for the nice message, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do it last night. I'm starting to feel better at least, and I'm just hoping I don't have another painful relapse.

As for Magic Lantern, I respect what they are doing a whole lot, but I'm keeping my camera stock. When I shoot, I can't afford to have any downtime and I don't trust 3rd party stuff enough. Besides, I'm more than happy with my 5DII & 5DIII the way they are and don't feel I need the features ML has for my work. I love watching them push the envelope and hope Canon partners with them sometime to build even better cameras.

Medium format for Canon

NancyP said:
Canon has to design a MF system. Camera? Camera back for studio view cameras? Lenses? Leaf shutter vs electronic or FP shutter? What about the ability to use existing lenses with appropriate coverage? You can bet that someone with a few Digarons is going to demand the ability to use them, MF lenses are expensive compared to similar-quality 135 format lenses.

Exactly. Plus behind how? FF is the perfect format, it's not too slow, not too heavy, it has a huge selection of lenses for all needs, and you even get all the megapixels you want if you go Nikon. I wouldn't mind seeing more MP from Canon, but if it's a MF camera, count me out. A 30+ MP FF, that I'd like to see.

Started shooting my sons wrestling matches, well trying to at least. I'm using a t3i with a 50mm 1.4 I find I'm way too close to get good photos and video. Moving further away is not an option as I coach him in most of his matches. What lens should I be using? I plan to upgrade to a 5d mark ii in a month or so and I'd like a lens that'll work on that body along with the t3i. What do you all suggest?

Loosing the crop factor the 50mm may be fine anyway, try it before you buy anything more. 70mm on the 5d isn't much wider than 50mm on the rebel

How do I go about losing the crop factor?

You do by buying a fullframe camera like the 5D. Because the sensor is bigger the lenses will all seem like they are of shorter focal length compared to what you are used to. On the rebel you are basically cropping away the edges you'd get visible on the 5D.

Here's probably a better explanation http://digital-photography-school.com/crop-factor-explained

Got it. Kind of thought that but wanted to make sure. Bought the 5d today so I'll see how it goes this weekend.

Canon 135mm or Tamron 24-70mm

I am now considering when do I get the Tamron, I have the money for it now, and I definitely want it for when I go on holiday to Italy in May, then there is a wedding I am shooting a few months later. In the UK the cheapest I see it at is around £800, should I wait and see if the price drops in the next few months?

if you are happy with refurbished wex quite often have them and they go for a bit over £600

In this case, I would rather buy it new.

Why Scott Kelby Switched to Canon

now only joe mcnally has to switch.

im not a big fan of scott kelby but joe mcnally... that´s a different story.
with canons RT flashes he had a reason. :D
Scott is first and foremost a photoshop guy, an instructor, a musician and then a photographer ... but Joe McNally is a die hard photographer to the core and then an instructor ... if I'm not wrong, from one of his videos, I recollect him saying that he does not get into post processing himself, instead he's got a team of 2 or 3 people who do that for him ... and he is a die hard Nikon user, and he just loves the Nikon CLS as he is really into useing a lot of speedlites in his photography and does it brilliantly ... I don't think he will switch to Canon.
Rienz is definitely right, and Joe McNally shot photos for the D4 launch and brochure so he has deep ties to Nikon. What's funny, though, is that I know one of his former assistants and he shoots with Canon ;D

Should I go for the 85mm F1.2L II USM ?

This lens is a deadly weapon in the wrong hands. By deadly, I mean you will want to poke your eyes out if you shoot at 1.2 up close because the DOF is small. Besides that, I love this lens. Supreme Being of bokeh is more like it. I would just be sure you are ready to throw down that kind of money for the lens instead of going for a 1.4 or 1.8 version. Also, the focus is a bit on the slow side and that may be an understatement. This lens wasn't made for sports so I imagine you want it for portrait.

One of my favorite and oddly least used lenses I own.

5DMkIII AF performance at f/8

AlanF said:

The 300 f/2.8 x2 with the 7D does focus slowly, but with the focus limiter it is OK. I got some good birds in flight with it. With the 5DIII, it is very fast.

I have gone over to DxO PRIME for noise reduction and found it miraculous - it's raised the 7D to new level. Here is a photo I took just over a year ago at 600mm of a kingfisher speeding like a bullet, and I used iso 1600 and 1/4000 s. It has just gone through 1 round of DxO prime with simultaneous USM of 0.9. It's a 100% crop.

Not bad at all. When you say "USM of 0.9", is that ".9" describing the radius of the unsharp mask?

135L or 100 Macro IS?

The 135 f/2 can certainly be used for macro photography, just add an extension tube. Even more extreme is adding a TC + an extension tube! It autofocuses faster than the 100L (such as for sports or faster portraiture), has better bokeh, and isn't really any less sharp.

In my opinion, the only downsides to the 135 are its focal length and lack of IS. It's a bit too long for most portraiture in my opinion. As for the lack of IS...it's an f/2 aperture, but if you buy a lens to shoot handheld at 1/15 of a second, you're out of luck there. I have other lenses for that, though.

To each their own...in my opinion the Canon 100L is a poor value...the Tamron and Sigma stabilized macros are just as good for 20 to 30% less money. The Sigma is now well under $600!

C300 Necessities

Hey everyone, so I've spent the last few weeks doing some research and I've decided the C300 is the best camera for my needs. I'm putting together a little kit at the moment, but I'm curious to see as what some of y'all would suggest as necessities. Understandably accessories will vary depending on work, but I'll be doing everything from traveling through Africa for documentary work, weddings, short features, etc. I've basically just compiled a list of everything from BNH on their accessory section, but I just want to make sure I've got all my bases covered. Thanks in advance.

$45,000 worth of gear (give or take).

That's a lot of eggs in one basket. :o

I took a look at their website, and noted the MSRP of $450 USD ... that's more than I'm willing to pay. However, for a person with $45,000+ worth of gear, then I suppose the cost/benefit equation becomes different.

It's not just about protection of gear which makes these lenses so good...it's the fact that they are less obvious as being a camera bag, fits in the over heads on a plane but most importantly....they weigh about half of the competition's bags of the same size.
If a photographer uses mkII white teles and one of these bags, he is literally halving his luggage weight and that makes it carry on hand luggage weight. Which then negates the need for peli cases and the like.

I carry on my pelican camera/laptop case... ;) I do get a workout carrying it around the world, but I haven't had any problems with it (except for some smaller airplanes).

EOSInfo Shutter Count functional for new cameras - finaly

I've removed the link, and am locking this thread. Whenever a new member from Croatia posts a link to a website that seems to specialize in software cracks and creating Trojans, I prefer to be on the safe side.

There are many Trojans able to get by virus checkers, so a antivirus software is no guarantee of safety. They can quietly turn your computer into part of a bot network, and you'll never know.

EOS Info was produced by Astrojargon, there is nothing on his web site that says it has been updated.

Sparrow Hawk vs. Dove

Hi Don.
Isn't that BEEP,BEEP,BEEP! Just a soul destroying noise to hear when, you press the shutter release, anyone timed whether they can kill the shutter release by selecting the menu to change the drive mode faster than riding out the timer? That's what I usually end up doing, yes it has happened to me far too many times! Along with pretty much all the other faux pas listed here. :-[

Cheers Graham.
