Canon EF 35 f/1.4L II to Finally Arrive? [CR1]

I am late to this posting, but must say that I am very happy with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art. I used to have the Canon 35mm f/1.4L and thought it was great too. There was about a year gap when I did not have any 35mm prime.

The Sigma I think produces a superior image in sharpness, color saturation and tone; not to mention the bokeh is very unique and surreal.

Just check out this photo from an outdoor shoot:

Canon Printers?

Thank you for sharing your experiences - it seemed a good deal but the UK/USA price difference is a bit shocking at times!
I had been leaning towards the Pro1 in general, my sales tend to vary - mainly at odd times at craft fairs so when I do sell then I need more, but the s9000 has been acting as my all purpose printer up till now.
Which papers do you use - Canons own or other brands?
Many thanks!

Where to get 5DIII sensor cleaned?

privatebydesign said:
Wow you guys take it too seriously sometimes.

It is very easy to clean a sensor yourself, if you really refuse to get a kit and do it yourself then any camera shop can do it, if they have an in house repair dept even better.

You are probably right. I just have a life-long collection of items I've f*cked up trying to do it myself. There's a reason I've spent my career in office jobs.

Which one should I get?!

Samyang has bargain lenses that have been coma-minimal to date. Look at the lenstip reviews of 14mm 24mm 35mm - a true bargain set for astrophotographers. I gather that the Nifty Fifty Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is fine and coma free when stopped down to f/4 - you can't get much cheaper than that. On my 6D I use the 14mm f/2.8 at f/4 for maximal astrophotographic sharpness, but it will be ok at f/2.8 in my experience. I like manual focus lenses. The Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 and Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 are superb, and if you have unlimited money, go for the TS-E to get the tilt for your daylight landscapes. I happened across a used Zeiss 21 at my local store, bought it, use it at f/2.8, coma free. Coma is reasonable on the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, best results at f/2.8, fine results f/2 in my experience. I am experimenting with inherited and my own old legacy manual-everything lenses for 50ish and 100ish focal lengths. These 40 year old fast normal lenses have coma wide open - aspherical elements were rare back then. I get great sharpness and ok coma at f/2.8, no coma at f/4 with the old Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AIS. It is also a fun special effects lens for the marked aberrations at f/1.2.

Samsung's dual grip WB2200F Smart camera boasts 60x optical zoom

Hi everyone...

I wonder what would be the impact of this camera over the market segmentation:
Samsung's dual grip WB2200F Smart camera boasts 60x optical zoom

Here are some additional details.

These three specs details IMO are a small nightmare.... If these were better it could have been a game-changer.

* - Sensor size: 1/2.3" (6.17 x 4.55 mm)
* - ISO: 80 - 6400
* - Screen dots: 460,000

Quite cute, but I'm not sure of what's the point of having a smartphone-like IQ in such a bulky body.

Sony strives to bring the highest IQ in small bodies, Samsung goes the opposite way :o

Nikon D610 yes D600 minor upgrade!

Nikon really dropped the ball with the D800 and D600. Canon have really picked up their game with the 1Dx, 5DIII and 6D. The new 610 specs look very much like a feature plugged responce to the 5DIII and 6D.
If it were a response to the 6D, it would have GPS and Wi-Fi. Unless by that, you mean it's a response to the 6D not flinging oil all over the sensor. :D
It's not a response to 6D... we all know it's a response to D600... :P

... as was the 6d, Canon would have never released it without the pressure from Nikon.

We could (or rather not start) to argue Canon vs. Nikon systems and specs vs. reality all day long, but from what I've seen Nikon's updated camera leaves very little to be desired and the trolling level of some of the posts above proves that Canon die hards are at a loss to find any real arguments :-o

RGB metering, silent shutter, 100% viewfinder, 6fps, f8 autofocus, 39 af points, 24mp ff for under $2000, oh my, this is throwing down the gauntlet.

I remember reading an interview with Canon's DSLR director from a few years back (he was a newly appointed exec at the time). He talked about the need to unify the 1D series into a single camera and splitting the 5D into two models for two markets. One would be pro-ed up and the other consumered down. So on hind sight, the 1Dx / 5DIII and 6D are the products of his direction as opposed to any marketing / product pressure from Canon. It's quite clear that Nikon tried to splice into Canon's range and not the other way round. So the D700 was sitting in the gap between the 5D and 1Ds III.
lets face it, the 5DIII really is the 3D we all wanted and then some. Sure 35mp would have been nice, but the current camera is easily the most versatile from any camera manufacturer to date and is a PJ / wedding photographer's wet dream.

Canon to bring production home as yen continues slide

An interesting article on SLR sales:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/canon-bring-production-home-yen-073624820.html

Notably:

SLR SALES

The CEO said sales of digital single-lens reflex cameras likely came in under 8 million units in 2013 for the first annual decline since Canon introduced its first model in 2004, as the slowing pace of innovation meant fewer consumers felt the need to replace older models. He also attributed the drop to prolonged economic weakness in Europe and slowing growth in China.

"SLR sales fell last year due to poor economic conditions," Mitarai said. "But I think that they will rise stably from now on. I want to aim for close to 9 million units in 2014."

But industry insiders said Canon and its closest rival Nikon Corp (TYO:7731) were struggling to clear excess inventory built up as they overcompensated for damage done to factories in Thailand after flooding in 2011 - leading to prices of entry-level models being slashed by more than 50 percent to as little as $300.

Canon's shipments of interchangeable lens cameras accounted for 45.1 percent of global shipments in July-September, according to IDC, a 5 percent drop in share from the year prior and a 25.7 percent drop in unit sales.

How was the 50D I downgrade? Just curious. I can see the 60D, but 50D?

As far as I remember the 50d was the first Canon aps-c to be accused of having a too high pixel density for it's own good, and it was even sold alongside the 40d for a while since they served different purposes (just like 5d2 vs 5d3)... the high iso noise gave the 50d a bad reputation, little did they know back then about what was to come next :-p

Selling my 50D for the 7D was a mistake at the time.

Traveling to Taiwan & Japan..do i need to declare Camera kit

As said by Don Haines, here in Canada, you can have your gear registered at the customs prior leaving. I've travelled a bit with my camera gear without doing so and the only time I actually had to declare camera equipment on return was when I had bought a lens during a six months stay in Europe and I declared it on purpose.

If you can't find a custom registration before you leave India, I've also been suggested to register all my equipment with my house insurance company and that they could provide me with some kind of form that would make it safe for crossing borders. This would have the additional benefit of making sure you don't have problems with your insurer in the event of a claim with regard to photographic equipment.

Mind you, I did not do that either and had no problems...

Have a nice trip.

Editing critique needed!

Yeah, I haven't calibrated my monitor for quite long time, it might start to get bit out of range now :-\
Or just might be that I rushed those bit too quickly and didn't pay enough attention.

Calibrating your monitor will certainly help. I use x-rite's colormunki to keep my monitors calibrated and sync for their color profiles. Keep in mind that your monitor and printer should be calibrated every time the ambient light changes as it will affect their accuracy.

Need advise on purchasing lens from Canada

Thanks to everyone that responded!

Yes, I was just about to post the same thing. The fine print on the rebate indeed states that the rebate will only be mailed to Canadian addresses. Bummer. Looks like I have to wait for another sale on the lens. My trip is not until September, so hopefully another sale will come along.

The lens is $200 cheaper on the Canadian site, so worst case I can order it from there even without the rebate.

Renaming and storing photos

On importing I organise my in folders lightroom as follows:

Top level (e.g. "Working")
year (e.g. "2013")
Month (e.g. "2013_09")
Day (e.g. "2013_09_15")

this way even if you view the folders outside of lightroom they are always in date order.

Then lightroom imports into each days folder. Within that folder I might sub sort into image type e.g. if I've been to the zoo I might separate out monkeys to birds.

Then once a batch of RAWS are editted I move the folder into a similar structure set of folders but under a "done" top level. On moving the folder I export all pictures to iPhoto as JPEGS. Periodically I move the "done" folder to a backup hard disk.

I give pictures names in iPhoto when I upload them to flickr, but I never rename the files because I can't see the point/merrit

Strange Lens Flare (Sigma 35mm + MRC filter)

R1-7D said:
Here's my snapshot from the other night.

Like I said previously, I thought the flare my just be caused by my filter. After reading this thread I'm 95% sure it's just the mirror box in the camera now. Not a big deal... I've never had this type of flare before in any image that really counted.

Thanks for posting, it's the familiar flare alright. It looks like there is a small spike in the snow on the road as well... At least it's confirmed it does not only occur with Sigma lenses, and given the right conditions, almost any lens can produce the effect on the 5D Mark II, at least those with a wide aperture.

Lens Squeak - 24-70 2.8 USM II - Is this Normal?

mshaw said:
Update. Spoke with Canon on 1/7/14. Per the engineers - 'the noise did not occur under normal operating circumstances nor was the squeak able to be recorded on any audio equipment.' Lens will be shipped back with a smile from VA.

My last recourse would be to record some audio of the squeak on my 5D3 and send it back in yet again - but for what? This would be its 5th trip in if I'm remembering correctly!

I give up - Canon has wore me down. Tired of the constant back and forth and being down a lens. I'll just take a hit and sell old squeaky…It almost lasted a year haha! Im seeing Zeiss in my future. Very dissatisfied with all things Canon, but looking forward to the great things I've been hearing about Zeiss.

I miss manual focus primes... I know they won't squeak :P

Thanks for following my story friends and I hope you have better luck than I!

Man, that is some pretty $h1tty treatment of a customer! So sorry to hear that...

I can absolutely recommend the Zeiss 50 f2 mp, wonderful lens that can do it all.
