I'm amazed by my 5D Mark iii

I should have included this with my post. A Greater Roadrunner. Shot at ISO 640.
Lots of detail, nice pic ... I totally agree with you about being amazed by the 5D MK III ... its been over 18 months, since I've had the 5D MK III and I sometime forget how awesome it is ... just yesterday, I got the Sony a7 full frame mirrorless camera, the more I use it the more I realize how awesome the 5D MK III really is.

Do You Take Better Pics with Primes?

ajfotofilmagem said:
Yes If Robert Capa had zoom lenses in its time, would not have risked so much to get photos like this:
Capa%2C_Death_of_a_Loyalist_Soldier.jpg

Capa didn't risk anything taking that image, it has been proven to be staged. Having said that, he did end up losing his life in combat, and the mine he stepped on didn't give a damn if he had a zoom or a prime.

To suggest, even in jest, that combat photographers don't risk as much as Capa, because the vast majority of them shoot zooms, is a disgusting thought.

Which lens to start with?

Jack56 said:
In a couple of weeks I will buy a Canon Mark5dIII.
I'm the owner of a 60d, but I like to go FF.
I've already got the 100mm L and I like this lens a lot.
I shoot stills (nature) and with my 60d I hardly use the 15-85 anymore.
Also because of the sharpness of the 100mm.
In december I will travel to Scotland and hope to make some nice landscapes images and know I need a lens for that.
I've got doubts over the 24-105 (cheap) and the 17-40. That's why I thought about the 16-35/24-70. But because of the new releases in 2014 I am more confused. What would you do? Primes? The 24-105 and wait till first Q of 2014? Thank you for reading my question.

I haven't used to other wide Canon zooms but the 24-105 is a very capable landscape lens at the wide end. Shooting at f/10 it's fine. I know some people who criticise the distortion/softness, but I don't find that a problem, although there can be a bit of chromatic aberration that needs cleaning up (not hard though).

I've attached a couple of shots taken with this camera/lens combo in Scotland to illustrate, hope that's okay.

how do I post photos in the forum?

Marsu42 said:

Can someone write a simple step by step how to post photos, I seem to need more than click on the mona lisa...

My personal favorite: Upload it forum-sized to your imageshack (or similar) account, it gives you the tag to copy/past to a forum.

Advantages are that you can post the same shot in several locations and you keep control over the shots you posted over the net as you can simply delete the bitbucket source image if wanted. Last not least, the "external" option has no limitations, you can use a small size as a preview to appear directly in the post, but put the full res in the link when the image is clicked.
I agree with Marsu42 that using a image host is preferred. Depending on your image host, the images will be better quality than uploading them to CR. The forum software does not do a great job of reducing image size, it also reduces quality, so strange things happen in some cases. Linking to your image host gets around that issue.

Contradicting Information About Canon's Camera Plans in 2014

Robert Welch said:
The 5D release cycle looks to be between 3-4 years, so the idea Canon will be releasing a 5DmkiV next year seems premature. Considering the 5DmkIII, along with the 6D, are selling quite well (according to Amazon's best selling DSLR list), it would seem more likely Canon will continue milking the profits from this camera for 1-2 more years at least.

The D800 and D610 would be Nikon's best selling full frame cameras, and while they don't seem be be selling as well as the Canon FF models, they are doing quite well themselves. So I would seem off base to call them a flop. I know a lot of D800 owners personally, many who shot with D3/D3s/D4 have it as an extra body for times when more resolution is desirable. I've also known many who have owned one and sold it, so retention after the original sale may be a problem with the camera. It is a unique camera, and either it meets your needs or it doesn't. If it meets your needs, then there is nothing else that will. The Df is an interesting model, though. It already seems to list high on the best seller list. It will be interesting to see if it stays there. It's got a fantastic sensor, and many unique features.

But Nikon's line up seems a bit fractured, I think they have missed the boat on making a singularly popular camera, like Canon has with the 5DmkIII and even with the 6D. What the demand for a higher MP camera from Canon is really would be a hard question to answer. Maybe Canon hasn't found the market would be strong enough to support such a camera from them. Or maybe they are still looking to get some updates to more of their lenses in place to support a super high MP camera. It has been reported that next year is the year of new lenses from Canon. That would make sense as there isn't much of a need for a new camera in the lineup other than a high end, high MP model. And to release such a camera before there were sufficient lenses to really take advantage of the added resolution would probably hurt sales ultimately. There is probably need for improved wide angle zoom lens, something to compete with Nikon's 14-24. If Canon does release a high MP camera, the current WA lenses are not likely up to par to do such a camera justice. The 24-70 & 70-200 mkII models are certainly good enough, but the 16-35 or any other wide is in desperate need of improvement to bring them up to the same level as those lenses. The line of newer prime IS lenses could be expanded to include a 50mm, and maybe a few more, like the 85/100/135, and maybe the 20mm too, to round out the lineup.

I do remember seeing a CR post a while back about the issues with the big canon MP -- if the rumor/article is true, they were saying it was delayed due to battery issues (the increased processor needs led to heavy battery drain). I had read that here, not sure how far back that rumor/article was though - and it's not like it was a report from canon r&d or anything...so it may be true, may not be true. Either way, if it is true, I'd rather wait and have them get it right when they do release it rather than rush it out with battery issues

Sony A7R on DXO - Highest full frame IQ ever

Rienzphotoz said:
Does any one know how to change focus points on Sony a7, (like how we choose from the 61 AF points on Canon 5D MK III)?
OK, I figured out how to do it ... a bit long winded, but it works. In doing so I found that the sides of the images are horribly soft ... I guess it might be the weakness of the kit lens ... but the center is stunningly sharp.
For those who are like me searching how to change focus points:
Hit "Fn" button, choose "Focus Area" and select "Flexible Spot M" ... then you can use the Control Wheel on the back of the camera to select the focus point.

14yr old looking for some C&C

Compositionally, they work quite well. However, as already mentioned, watch the colour balance and don't oversaturate to the point that the landscape no longer looks real. The first two in particular are shifted towards the green/yellow quite a bit. Also, to ensure you maintain detail, it is vital that you have a steady base, ideally a sturdy tripod. I didn't look at all of them closely, but the ones I did are showing quite a bit of camera shake, despite the low resolution web images. The water shot also looks to have had a lot of noise reduction added, which has smeared all the detail to the point of non-existence. Detail is very important in landscape photography and if you want to progress in that field (not easy to say the least with so many doing it), it is important that you follow a good technique.
Don't get me wrong, they are a good start, but if you want to progress, it is important that any deficiencies are pointed out, so that you can iron them out. Composition is the hardest part to master in many ways with landscape photography and you have made a good job there, now you just have to master the technical side.

Upgrade questions...

My question is, is the 1D4 worth $3000 over already owning the 7D? I figure it would be a great affordable alternative to the 1DX, I think the camera every one of us wants! LOL.

I don't own a 1d (my bank account would object), but I'm with you that the 1d4 is a dream camera for outdoor (photo journalism, wildlife). It doesn't run Magic Lantern :-) but apart from that aps-h sounds about perfect because it still uses the lens' best bit and has a narrower fov. Since the 1d4 has a near-endless shutter rating I would gather a purchase not to be regretted if you have the $$$... but (yes, you don't want to hear it) only accompanied by the iq of a newer ff camera like the 6d.

BigValue 6D - no warranty card???

http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=bigvalueinc

"Our products are covered by a warranty of 1 years parts and 90 days for labor. Due to our very low low prices, we are prevented from listing our items with manufacturer warranty. Rest assured, our products are the same as if you bought in stores"

this is from the terms and conditions page.

i don't think the cameras they sell come with a "manufacturers warranty" because they are not an authorized seller. maybe canon would warranty it anyway? if not it seems they will warranty the product themselves.

anyway, i have bought from them in the past and haven't had any problems. their prices are good and it sounds like you get warranty coverage one way or another.

3.5" Screen Coming to Next EOS-1? [CR1]

Re: 3.5\

Jim Saunders said:
If Canon had a 5" monitor I could plug into a body and use to navigate menus with a touchscreen, I'd be interested. A slightly bigger touchscreen on the back, right next to the buttons anyway? Meh.

Jim

Personally, I'd like to see streaming tethering. Right now, I can tether my Surface Pro, with its full 1080p HD screen, to my 7D. Problem is, I have to take a shot first to see the result. I'd love it if I could stream live view through the USB cable to the Surface Pro, and control the camera from there. Would be like having a classic large format view camera, only better (i.e. no upside down composing or dealing with ground glass.)

Canon EOS M2 Not Coming to North America

A different but similarly interesting data point is the "top camera" search results on www.dpreview.com on their front page.

It used to be that Canon cameras were 6 out of 10 for a long while. Now Canon is 3 out of 10 and none in the top 5.

Sorry, dilbert not interesting nor even useful data. As unfocused stated, it's meaningless.

unfocused said:
Use the Amazon best sellers list. As of tonight, Canon has 13 of the top 20 best sellers. Nikon has 7.

What continues to amaze me is that the 5DIII consistently holds a slot in the top 10 against cameras that cost a fraction of what it costs. In fact the body only comes in at #9 and the body with lens is at #18. (The 6D kit is at #10 and the 6D body #13) There are not any full-frame Nikon bodies in the top 20.

If you want another interesting 'top 100' list, look at what Amazon buyers think of the products they've purchased. Check their Top 100 Rated dSLRs list. The top 14 are all Canon, only 3 Nikon in the top 20 (and all three are D3100/kits). Dilbert, care to count the number of coworkers and friends to whom you 'can't recommend Canon', and compare that to the number of positive recommendations that Canon buyers took the time to post, that result in Canon dominating that list?

The awesome low ISO IQ, high resolution, astounding DR, and higher-than-any-other-dSLR DxOMark Sensor Score of the Nikon D800E have earned it the impressive rank of #76 on that list (only 14 spots behind the poor DR, horrible banding in the shadows 5DII). The D800 and D600/D610? Nowhere to be found (although the D700 is on there...barely, at #98).

Ah, stupid me. You're confining the Amazon results to DSLRs whereas I'm referring to digital cameras.

It is not possible to compare the information available from Amazon with that from dpreview because Amazon does not offer a combined "digital camera top 10" - it separates out DSLRs vs everything else.

So the whole discussion about dpreview statistics vs Amazon is an apples and oranges problem.

"Digital cameras" is an extremely broad and diverse pool. Makes it difficult to determine what's occurring, and more specifically, WHY it is occurring. Global statistics have their use, but they don't make for good comparisons. It would be like putting out two baskets full of random fruit, sourced from a variety of locations, but each one sourced from different locations. Trying to determine why people are eating from one basket or the other is largely meaningless...you have no detail, only a single overarching result: Basket B was eaten from more than Basket A. That doesn't tell anyone anything, and isn't any better than comparing apples to oranges.

RokSamBow 14.......the newer version (AS ED UMC). I used the Tokina 11-16 on crop, sold it and am getting the 14 My bigger problem at night is dew, but I've finally solved it...........
Could you please share how you solved it?

I have a dew heater strip for my 8 inch scope, plugs into a 12VDC receptacle (cigarette lighter socket). I bought a small 6 volt battery, connected a 12VDC receptacle to it and wrap the heater strip around the lens, held in place with one of my wife's hair scrunchies. Lasts all night and keeps the lens quite dry, but I have to be sure to check focus after wrapping it. I had previously tried the strip-wrap-on-lens with the usual 12 volts but it got a tad too hot for my liking. Also tried a turn signal flasher relay in series with it to give about a 50% duty cycle. It worked, but looked and sounded ridiculous. Saw the sealed lead-acid 6 volt battery on a shelf in a local Academy Sports, meant to power an automated feeder of some sort and cost all of 10 dollars. 'twas an aha! moment. If you don't want to buy a dew heater strip (Mr. Bean's post) you could make a resistor ladder....but those Dew-Not's he referred to are a good price and work quite well.
Thanks

Is YN622C's Test Fire button a remote shutter release?

entlassen said:

Ditto what the others say. It won't work.

I'll give you a word of warning though... I have the Phottix wireless trigger,
http://www.amazon.com/Phottix-Wireless-Timer-Shutter-Release/dp/B006JPV126/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1386302625&sr=8-7&keywords=photix+trigger

and I mounted the trigger a top of the yongnuo and from a distance of maybe 10 feet, there appears to be enough interference that the phottix receiver could not register my depression of the shutter release.

So if you wind up trying to do something like that... just be aware that it might not work as seemlessly as you hope...

I think the next time I'm going to just have the phottix receiver hang off the cord giving it about 2.5 feet away from the yong transceiver.

Thanks for the heads up! To clarify, you're using the 622's right, not the 603's?

Yeah, the 622's.

A little pick me up about the sony alpha 7

I just got the sony alpha 7 with kit lens. I was hoping to replace my wife's nex 6 with this since it will hold her 16-50 collapsable zoom and be a FF travel camera for me. Not the case so far.

Cons:
Iq worse with apsc e mount lenses
Auto-mode wife would use starts the shutter usually 2/focal length.
Phase detect is poor or does not come on during low light.
The two main dials sit in front and back of shutter release making this camera akward to hold.
The grip is tall but way too shallow.
Lack of speedlites and lens choices
Finally the awb and standard picture style make the reds look orange.

Sooooo I grabbed my 5d and all I can say is ergonimics and good glass make the weight and size worth it. Like anything other manufacturers will follow but this needs time to evolve. Now I see the light on Canon's choice for the Sl1 and 6d since they are smaller and lighter but are more functional. I do own a sony nex 6 but again the lens selection is low and as said many times on this forum good Glass is important than just a sensor alone. Just my 2 cents.
