Another Lens recommendation request :)

Here's one more for the 17-55, for all of the reasons that others have already mentioned. On a crop body I find it to be better than the 17-40. But if you're sure that you'll be going to FF soon, then it's a no-go. As I see it you really need to decide if it's going to be FF or crop before you buy a wide angle zoom.

And I have to agree with buying one used or refurbed, you can save some serious cash like that. I always buy in person and not online. I have to see it, feel it, test it, etc. and when I do that I've never been burned.

Canon 10-22 vs. Tokina 11-16

Definitely the Tokin 11-16, it's much sharper than the 10-22 as well as the 17-40 in the center although does get a little soft in the corners on the wide end. I highly recommend the 11-16 since it's faster and the range difference comes down to taking a few steps back or forward. Also the 11-16 can be used on a FF if you don't mind vignetting which disappears at about 14mm

6D Feature Request: Web Server

I sent this message to canon earlier today, what do you guys think?

Nice to have? overkill? it's already there and I just missed it?

Dear Canon, could you please add a WebServer to the cameras OS. This could be as simple as:

GET /
# Gives the list of photos

GET /IMG_00001.cr2
# Gets one photo

Nice to have but not needed out of the gate:
DELETE /IMG_00001.cr2

While on the surface that sounds like a fantastic idea, thinking about it this is a major security nightmare type of feature, ESPECIALLY the "delete" part.

You would most certainly have to add some sort of authentication to the scheme, and I think things start getting expensive hardware wise once you go down that road.

TTYL

Well, how does the current WiFi controls work? There isn't some kind of authentication first? Since it's an Ad-Hoc P2P WiFi network, if you use decent security (WPA2 w/Password) once you're on it it's likely you. And then turn it off when not using it. You don't want to drain the battery anyway, do you?

DXOMark: Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4

Zeiss is a very good company whose ethos for many decades has been to be the best in the world at what they do. Their latest Otus is for a niche market and will not be a huge mass market money spinner. It isn't fair to say that Westerners would not buy such a lens from an Asian company. We pay far more for the top Canon telephoto lenses. And I doubt whether Zeiss would even try and compete with those telephoto lenses because they know that it is one of the areas where Zeiss would be hard pressed to be the best in the world.

Sony 7R IQ vs Canon 5Dm3, Nikon D800E and Pentax645D

Leica?
it was a great company but now it is a shitty copy cat brand.
they never invent anything new since 1983.
even their lens quality is overrated, the Sony 35mm f2.8ZA(which is designed by Sony) is sharper than the Leica 35mm f1.4 Lux.
if Leica had no European , literally no one really worship for it.
it is the name and look of the body that attract the people buy it despite of whatever Leica fanboys say about it.
and I was a Leica fanboy, but saw the reality and woke up when I saw Tim Ashley's his Leica M vs A7R vs D800E vs RX1 comparison.

lens recommendation soccer

I live in Brazil, and I know well the difficulty of photographing football on a field official size (giant). The only option that allows decent pictures of your side of the field, and also on the opposite side, is use two bodies, and two lenses with focal length quite different. For example, 6D + 24-105 (closer to you) and other combination T2i + 55-250 STM (away from you). If have good lighting would not be a limiting factor to use dark lenses. Obviously, if the budget allows 70-300L will do fine on your 7D. Stay away from 75-300mm, it will surely disappoint you. I do not understand how Canon still manufactures such a lens, which was acceptable at the time the cameras were only 3 megapixel.

Graduation and Concert coming up which lenses to rent?

JonB8305 said:
Graduation ceremony will be in a large college basketball stadium, so distance and low light will be needed.

The concert is going to be dark but it'll be in the floor area, so possibly can get some good close shots. Low light will take priority here.

Was thinking 70-200 2.8L II for the graduation and the 135L for the concert.

First...NOTHING slower than f/2.8

A few weeks ago, I shot at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans....3x days of concerts and I had credentials for full access to pits and even backstage. Concerts in day and night.

My 70-200 f/2.8 L II was the workhorse....but in some of the stages it wasn't too high and I was right up close, I had rented the 85mm f/1/2 to play with, and I got decent shots with it...but I found I was switching between my 70-200, and mostly during the day...my 17-40 f/4 I own, but it was a bit slow at night. I ended up getting some interesting shots (again, on stages I was very close on) with my cheap-o Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.

And even on some stages that were higher, I could set that thing up (manual lens) and just hold the camera up high as I could and shoot...and I got some good keepers with that.

If you're renting two of the lenses, I'd say #1 for sure, get the 70-200 f/2.8. You might look into either the 16-35mm L f/2.8 too if you want to have a spread between wide and tele....or in lieu of the wide zoom, maybe also rent the 24-70L f/2.8 II lens.

Those two should cover you pretty nicely....they worked for me and this was my first real concert shoot I'd ever done.

HTH,

Random (but Legal) Use of your Photos

I do quite a lot of photo and video for my company (photography is not part of my job profile, it is my personal hobby) ... many of my photos get published in company brochures, calendars, newsletters, presentations, advertisements etc ... I don't get paid for it and nor is my name mentioned in any of the photos ... I don't mind though coz I'm happy with my regular job which pays me well to afford the luxury of some decent camera gear ... our CEO & COO usually give credit for the work I do in Board meetings, town hall meetings etc ... so I do get recognition for it ... but I do make sure to add my name at the end of every one of my videos.

Got paid $350 for doing what I LOVE - photography

Dylan777 said:
My rental 300mm f2.8 IS II arrived yesterday.

I went to local high shool this morning to test out the lens - photograph "little soccer league". I took over 500 photos. The coach asked to see the photos and I showed him my pictures. He offered to pay for all 500 photos for $350(about 1hr of fun for me). I took the offer and gave him all JPEGs. I promised to edit some raws and will give him some later.

Should I change my carreer ::)

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE I GOT !!!PAID!!! FOR THAT. I guess, I'm a "PRO" now ;D ;D ;D
COOL! ... Congratulations!
About thrice a year, I get offers from a local independent cultural center, to photograph their events for $410 for the full evening (about 5+ hours), but I always politely refuse it for 2 reasons:
1. My employment contract does not permit me (I suppose I could still do it on the sly but that would be a big risk if the company found out and I'd lose a well paid job that allows me the luxury of buying camera gear
2. Whole evening of photographing a very boring event plus editing thereafter and working during my time off (for $410) just puts me off ... but if the offer was more maybe I'd do it ;D

I NEED HELP CHOOSING LENSES for mostly video and some photo

I love my 40mm lens now that I have a full-frame body, but I basically never used it on my crop body. It was just too tight, so I kept finding myself having to walk back to ridiculous distances to get decent framing. I would suggest something wider on a crop body like the 60D—say 20mm or 24mm. Just my 2¢.

Of course, if you don't have a camera yet, I'd probably suggest saving up for a 6D. The prime lens lineup seems to be the right lengths for full-frame (and their cinema primes doubly so). That said, if you go with a crop body, I'd seriously consider a 10-22 zoom.
