what filter for 24-70 ii 2.8?

Hi guys,

Perhaps Neuro or someone else who is technically aware can answer this question.

Other than the very slight warming effect some see in the B+W UV MRC Nano vs. the opposite effect of the Heliopan, what is the real difference between the two? With the Heliopan significantly more expensive than B+W, but both using Schott glass and brass mounts, is either better than the other? Why is the Heliopan so much higher in price than B+W? Is it worth the difference? Heliopan says their MRC version has 16 different coatings, whereas B+W says only 8. Is that the only difference? Do the extra coatings make that much of a difference?

Secondly, regarding the circ polarizers by each manufacturer, does the B+W have a similar warming effect in the polarizer as it does in the UV? To my eyes, the difference is almost undetectable in most situations. Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this issue.

Zen :)

The UV filtering itself will cause the color tint. If you use the B+W clear filter instead like this one you won't get that effect:

re: polarizer I also have a B+W circ polarizer but I haven't tested it vs other brands so could not tell you.

Anyone Mind Another 70D vs 6D Question?

Volleyball is not very tough and doesn't really need super AF. AF is challenged when a subject is moving at high speed toward you, but even then, you can usually get by fine with any reasonable camera. you develop a sense of timing.

However, video is a different situation. If you want to zoom in and do video of rapidly moving subjects, autofocus will be a big benefit, and the only Canon DSLR with fast AF during video is the 70D. For stills only, I'd get a 6D.

I'm holding off on buying a new DSLR until Canon puts one out with AF during video, FF, Fast AF like my 5D MK III, Wi-Fi, and a fold out LCD. The latter may not happen, but its nice for video.

The color pics are way too harsh in their contrast and saturation. This gives an unnatural look. The b/w can take that harshness better.

Thanks for stopping by to comment, appreciate it. Question of taste I think. I like it, and I know others do....and some do not. Can't win them all. But I know where you are coming from on this........it is just my style, my leit motif.
Cheers

PowerShot Cameras Coming for CES 2014 in January [CR1]

The G series is still quite compact compared to some DSLRs... For an APS-C sensor (as rumored) if they can maintain the size of the present G1X, this is still one of the smallest even among mirrorless aps-c.

A G1X successor would make sense if they kept the body size the same, fitted an EOS-M mount, an EVF and dual-pixel PDAF. Of course, that would require them to show commitment to EOS-M and release some more lenses, which they are not doing at the moment.

Sony A7-A7R pre-ordered @ 200% bigger than expected

spinworkxroy said:
I tried it with the Canon 50mm f1.4 and the metabones mk3...it's soooo slow it's impossible to really use for work..average 2 sec AF.

I also tried the A mount adapter with the Zeiss 24-70 f2.8. This is SUPER fast..like a 5d3 but it's basically the same AF as a99 so it's expected. however, it is soooo front heavy..it's super uncomfortable to hold.

That's disappointng to hear about Canon lens being slow with adapter and how big the Zeiss FE 55 mm is. If the former was faster or the latter smaller, I would be SO much more excited :'(

I thought we were bashing Nikon, but how did we go form Mickey Mouse to Donald Duck ;D

I'm not the one who brought up Goofy... ;)
Okay, since Goofy's name came up - have you heard this one (beware, somewhat dirty joke ahead):

In the courtroom, the judge looks at Mickey and says, "You can't divorce your wife Minnie for being stupid." Mickey replies, "I didn't say she was stupid, I said she was f***ing Goofy!"

Appropriately titled “The Epic Split,” Volvo says the advertisement is the real deal and that while some safety equipment was digitally removed, no computer trickery is involved in the actual stunt, at least not on camera.

I need to read more carefully in the future :)

Handheld vs. tripod with the Great Whites

Nishi Drew said:
According to a majority of white lens owners here in Japan, you apparently cannot be recognized past amateur level unless you use a giant tripod, from "big white" to a 70-300 with IS, even if what you're shooting absolutely doesn't need any such support, but you're willing to lug around an F/2.8 zoom all day but shoot at F/16 only... err....
Seriously it's insane, was just at a nice place for autumn leaves viewing and I lost count past 50 of people with the 70-200 series of lenses, mostly 70-200LII too, and few of them are any sort of pro, just part of a photo group/club. It was interesting to see that a majority of users are Canon here, and more Olympus/Panasonic mFT users than even Nikon.

I run into Japanese tourists and retires here in Thailand all the time. They all tell me about Canon and how famous the 300 mm f2.8 lens and others are. And allot use tripods also.. strange.

Got to talking to one guy that was a real camera buff. He was shooting on a nice tripod using a Panasonic and an older 500mm f/4.5. Manual focus with focus peeking. And was getting some beautiful photos. I was amazed. Allot the Japanese guys here really get into it. Having special machined parts made for there lens and cameras.
I felt kinda out of place.

They also tell me Canon provides free services to it's customers there. Free yearly cleaning and adjustments. Is one thing he mentioned.

Carl Zeiss Otus 1,4/55 gets DxO score

If the words "game changer" were appropriate for a lens, they seem to be appropriate for this one. And I guess this puts pressure on the Canon team to release a high MP body sooner rather than later. I assume many 800E and A7R bodies are bought because of this lens.
I am really looking forward to get my hands on it. Delivery date is supposed to be Nov.29.

Used Leica going to auction, expecting to fetch $1.2M

kjay27 said:
For those who have an extra $1.2M rattling around in their wallet, a used Leica Luxus II of 1930's vintage will be auctioned off in Hong Kong with that as the expected result. It's gold plated and there were only four made. I guess my 6D won't be worth that much if I hold on to it for 85 years. Interesting story, though. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-25046060

I am waiting for the day when my T3 worth this much ::)

Speedlite guide number question

Hillsilly said:
I recently came across a flash where the manufacturer compared their GN to some competitors. I thought that was a smart move as it removes a lot of potential confusion. Still it is interesting to see that GN 110 = GN 60 = GN 34. (and, of course, some of these measurements are in feet and others in metres, which also makes it a little harder to make direct comparisons.)

"Every company measures guide number differently. At LumoPro®, this is how we measure guide number:
GN= Distance x f/stop,
Distance = 10ft, F/stop at 105mm, ISO 100, Full Power = f/11
10ft x f/11 = 110, GN = 110
The LP180's power is roughly equivalent to the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT or the Nikon SB-900."

yes GN = distance x f stop is the formula on Wikipedia. Only American and probably UK use feet while the rest of the world uses metric system. I prefer the Canon GN more because they included the zoom in their GN number while Nikon only gives GN based on 35mm and you need to calculate the rest.

WOW ... so much devastation ... my kids (with the help of their friends) raised $3000 yesterday for the people affected by Yolanda/Haiyan ... I know its just a very small contribution but we hope it goes to the needy. May God bless them all.
