5D MkIII + Konova K2 Slider + Bboying (Breakdancing)

nice choice of music to go with the video, hope you follow up with more stuff. I agree with JLRoyal42 about thinking more about the light, even if you don't have the money for a artificial light, think about using the sun and what time of day and location to shoot in order to get maximum effect out of the largest free lighting source in the solar system. lots of really excellent footage out there shot natural lighting only.

Will you be disappointed if the 70d gets the same 18mp sensor?

that fact that I can now buy a computer that's twice as fast and half as expensive as it was in 2009 tells me everything I need to know about how much Canon has been milking their APS-C chip. sure they've added on-chip autofocus now, but a badly implemented feature does not count as improvement.

I'm really happy to see Canon diving into a whole bunch of new areas with cameras like the EOS M and the SL1, but let's get something straight: the body development team are not (hopefully not) the same guys that are the sensor development team. so there is no justification for the near-zero evolution of Canon's APS-C sensor line.

is there anything inherently wrong with the 18 MP APS-C sensor? no. we were pretty happy when the 7D got released with it, and while it never came close to matching the 5DII's sensor, I don't think anyone really expected it to. the sensor was great then, and is just as good now as it was then. the issue to me isn't really the sensor itself, it's what it signifies from Canon. it's Canon telling us that they don't feel that they need to innovate. it's Canon telling us they think we're dumb enough to think that sticking a t5i sticker on a t4i means it's "new". it's Canon lying to us that we shouldn't judge the chip's autofocus speed on the EOS M because it's pre-production, and it'll get much faster by the time of the actual release.

I don't think the folks at Canon are stupid, but I do feel they take the liberty of thinking that their consumer base is a little dim. the t5i is definitely toeing the line of "let's see how sheep-like our customer base is" and I hope the 70D and 7DII have not been treated the same way.

+1 Well Said.

5D Markiii Auto Lighting Optimizer vs Highlight Tone Priority

neuroanatomist said:
HTP increases the DR if you shoot in JPG. It underexposes by 1 stop of ISO, then lies about it in the metadata (that's why ISO 200 becomes the lowest setting - if you shoot at ISO 200 with HTP, the camera actually exposes at ISO 100). That 1-stop underexposure preserves a stop of highlights, the camera then applies a tone curve to boost everything but the highlights by 1 stop (meaning a stop more noise in the shadows).

If you shoot RAW, leave HTP off. You then have latitude to preserve >1-stop of highlights, and can apply your own tone curve.
Thanks neuro. I honestly never mess with curves. I've tried messing with it a few times or with the auto settings in DPP but never really liked the results. I normally just use contrast, highlight or blacks to adjust. Anyone have any suggestions on a tutorial for editing curves in DPP?

Are 5d3 owners happy with the video, ALL i?

I love the video produced by my 5D Mark III. I use the 24-105mm f/4 L lens and in Premier Pro CS6 add 28-35 sharpening. In low light, even with that lens, the footage looks fab. No complaints from me.
although i use my 5d3 in manual 90 percent of the time i do also see a quality difference, but do you guys think the problem is that the 5d3 processes at 4:2:0, until April (a weeks time) output at 4:2:2 will finally be available, but then we all need a ninja or other brand capture device via HDMi.

ive been testing my 5d3 to see whether i can pull of video and photos that look close enough to not tell the difference but i find its the lighting and i never get the same results with the same exact settings, it seems i have to tweek a custom setting for video and then switch to it from my typical manual or AV mode for photo rather then just go into live mode for video on the 5d3, you guys run into the same thing?

Have you tried implementing a question -> response registration type? (Not sure, been a while since I last registered here)
I had a similar problem on my page a while back and none of the CAPTCHAS worked. So I created a custom field on the registration page where I asked a question stating where the answer can be found. (Must be on a different page, on the top of the Help page should work) It's very easy for real humans to answer the question (open a new tap and voila) but bots will have a very problem going around that one. You can even easily generate a new Q&A every day making sure that the answer is nor being spread around or guessed easily.

On my page the amount of spam accounts went from daily to pretty much zilch. (Haven't had a bot in months)

Yes, there is a response question. However, the nature of SEO spamming is changing as well. Now, there are large rooms full of people who work for a few cents a day manually creating accounts and going thru the login procedure.

There are still lots of robots, but the manual process is more successful. They even post some text that may or may not be relevant, but its always obvious to readers.

We get maybe 3-7 spams thru a day, and these are handled pretty quickly. Thanks to those who report them. Those who pay SEO companies to do this are usually clueless, or they do get results and don't care. Even a big Fortune 500 company got caught hiring a shady SEO Spammer a couple of years back.

24-70 2.8 or 24-70 4.0 IS ?

The 24-105/4L IS is an excellent walkaround lens on FF. The time to buy one is as a kit with a new FF body, else pick up a "white box" version (where a retailer breaks the kit apart).

The 24-70/2.8L II delivers the best IQ for a zoom lens in it's range, better than some primes it overlaps, too.

The 24-70/4L IS is smaller and lighter than either of the two above, and does well for closeup (near marco) shooting, although working distance is limited.

If you're looking for a walkaround lens, I'd recommend the 24-105L. IS is great for static subjects, but does nothing for subject motion. If you'll shoot moving subjects (e.g. people) in low light, or portraits, the 24-70/2.8L II is a better choice.

Warning on low card space

How large is your card? On a 32GB card I have shoot around 1,000 raw images. Is that enough for a single event. Costs are around $150. Consider that 1,000 images is the equivalent of ~30 rolls of film. Back in the day (ancient history) slides plus processing cost between $10-15/roll. Digital equivalent of a roll of film (36 exposure) is only $5.

Double the card size, you will double the number of images. Are you using the vertical grip? If not, the battery will die before a 64GB card is filled. A 128 GB card will outlast both batteries in the vertical grip.

If you are still worried about filling the card try setting the camera to use automatically switch to the second card once the first is filled.

Yup, using 32GB cards. I switched my first card with about 100 pics left on it and I filled up the second one. We tend to shoot quite a lot (in the 3500-5000 shot range). Not using a vertical grip although I'm curious if it might help me with the 70-200. I tend to use it a lot in portrait orientation and my arm was pretty sore by the end of the ceremony.

I have the vertical grip, and aside from the extra weight and bulk in the bag, I really like it. The vertical shutterbug is a really plus and I like the larger size.

If you shoot 3500-5000 shots, how often do you need to switch batteries? I tend to get 1500 shots / single battery (straight shooting, no viewing, no tracking with a supertelephoto lens).

It's 3500-5000 between 2 cameras not just one. My wife and I do it together. 3 batteries normally covers me.

All go0d things come to an end, so I guess this is the end for arguably the most popular FF DSLR of all time

Over here in South Africa, Canon is selling (and heavily advertising) the EOS 5D Mk.II for R15500, which is a bargain considering the Mk.III retails for R30000 and the 6D for R21000.

I'm seriously considering one of those 5D Mk.II cameras - as it also includes a local, Canon-backed, two-year warranty. Well, should I or is the 6D that much better?
Same here, in the middle east, the 5D MK II is still on sale ... I guess they are selling off their final stocks.

Upgrading from Rebel XT

Kudos. I guess I was late to the party, but you will be happy with the 7D... It's an great camera.

Thanks. I definitely want to look at upgrading the lens kit after this. I did look at the 60D, but in the end I thought the build quality (ruggedness) of the 7D was better for my needs. I was hoping to see a 70D announcement that might be in my price range, but in the end I decided to keep my budget under $1000 and I doubt a new 70D with tax would be under $1000 when ever it is announced.

That said my long term goal is to get to a 5d Mark III, so I think the 7D will be a good filler for a few years while the prices of a used 5D Mark III keep dropping.

For what it is worth, I think $2500 is the butter zone for the mkiii and where it will stay for the life of the camera... until the mk iv comes outs. That's a bit of a guess, but if you look at the 5d mkii, the price before the mkiii was on its way was $2200 and I think a $300 premium for a really substantial upgrade seems more than fair. Actually, $2600 would be fair... but I only want to pay $2500.

There's a deal right now, but there's an itch that I think I can do better and get the price down just a bit more... I hope I'm right, otherwise I just let a good deal pass by.

Also, I wasn't discussing it earlier, but if your XT still works, you can probably sell that for maybe $200 used... it really depends on how many people want to jump into the SLR pool but hope their skills make up for the extreme lack of technology.

Fastest card for 5DM3 - do you still buffer out?

LetTheRightLensIn said:
RGF said:
I normally use Sandisk Extreme Pro CF cards in my 5D M3 and then several people told me that they don't fill the buffer using a 1000x CF card. I tried the Lexar 1000x card and the buffer still fills up. I seem to get a few more shots before the buffer fills with the Lexar 1000x.

Has anyone tried other cards that are fast enough so that they buffer never fills?

Thanks

You want to avoid RAW+JPG though as the buffer for that can still fill fast. JPGs go without filling up. RAWs go for a long time. RAW+JPG can hit the buffer pretty easily.

I do highest quality raw + lowest quality Jpg... so not best of both worlds... but good enough.

Will anyone dethrone the Sony RX100 in 2013???

I currently have the Canon S100, but I am contemplating purchasing the Sony RX100 for a better quality pocketable camera.

There are two things holding me back from making the purchase:

* The RX100 focus range is 28-100mm, and I'd prefer 24mm on the lower end.
* Canon, or a competitor, will release a better pocketable camera in 2013.

How likely is it that Canon will release a Powershot S120 with a 1" sensor, or another competitor, in 2013?

Thanks

Testing my new 16-35 at ISO 51k and 102k

Hi,
just bought an excellent 16-35 F/2.8 L USM II second hand and tested it at insane ISOs yesterday...
My youngest son liked it...After a few tests in the past six month I guess, if you wanna get a decent b/w, 51k for the 5D3 is the limit with a light source like this. But I am more than happy, to be able to push things that far. Everything done in DPP, NR at about 14/18.

Has this query been posed yet... "Do you still love your wife?" I think that would sway my suggestion.

Of course not sure how thats relevant?

I think you are missing punctuation... it can be interpreted in a few ways...

The most likely candidate is: Of course! Not sure how that's relevant.
But I like: Of course NOT! Sure....? How's that relevant?
