Canon files a patent for a wide-angle RF-S zoom

Does anyone recall or have an idea how long time there generally is between Canon files a patent for a lens until they announce it or start marketing it - if ever.

I am enthusiastic about that 9-18 mm to finally replace my venerable Sigma 12-24 mm Ex :)
Could be 1-2 years or never from filing. Keep in mind that we don’t find out a patent was filed until it publishes, which is 18 months after the filing date. Sometimes a lens comes out before or soon after a patent publishes.

The most important thing to note is that only a very small percentage of patents actually become products.

Is Canon bringing us linear focus motors in the future? Latest patent shows they’re working on it.

what i'm wondering is this. USM is still loud. but not having owned Nano USM, is it quieter? is it a lot quieter? I think all my lenses are either USM or STM. for RF, I have 85 1.2 which is USM. I have the 35, 24, and 16 which are STM. I have 100 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. forgot what those are...
Nano USM is so quiet, the sound of the cams and elements moving around inside can be clearly heard. The RF100L and RF100-500L don't make distracting focus noises, even when using the internal microphone. They still make noise, but it's not the type of sound that makes everyone think "Hey, that's a focus motor."

Also, the STM motors in video mode are fairly quiet as well. Glacial, but quiet.

Leica announces Samyang and Astrodesign have joined the L-Mount Alliance

We’ll be honest, the first time we heard about the L-mount alliance, it didn’t really move the needle for us. Since then, we have started to see the benefits of the mount and how its helping the member brands. It has probably had the most benefit camera wise for Leica with their SL series. Panasonic

Sony officially announces the a6700, 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II, and ECM-M1 Mic

Canon fanboi or not (and I love my a6400), it's always nice when a major manufacturer shows love to high-end APS-C. I'm also glad that Sony has moved on from the 24MP sensor that's been at the heart of the a6x00 line since 2014.

I'm a stills shooter, so to me, this looks like mainly an incremental improvement over the 4-year-old a6600. That's to be expected, as the mirrorless marketplace has matured. I'm sure the AF and subject tracking have improved as would be expected with 2-1/2 generations of Moore's Law, not to mention the tremendous advances in "AI" over the past few years. The video improvements look impressive, but I can't comment beyond the raw specs because I rarely shoot video.

The main question in my mind is whether these improvements will be compelling enough for a6600 users to upgrade en masse.

The second question is whether Sony will replace the a6100 and a6400 based on the this sensor and processor. 6200 is the only number still available in their current numbering scheme, unless they want to go to 50's.

I am the only one missing a Canon new 50mm 1.4 for years??

Personally, I can't see Canon ever releasing a RF 50mm f1.4. I hate the ef version of the 50mm f1.4 USM...it's soft and low in contrast wide open. it's AF is slow and the build quality is really cheap and nasty. I've had two of these fall apart on my. I would choose the old ef 50mm f1.8 metal mount (for the 90's) over this lens any day.
While the ef 50mm f1.2 L get a lot of bad rap (for good reason) it still has amazing contrast wide open, it's flare control is exceptional. It has very nice rendering and it's built like a tank. It's also still relatively small.
However, would I ever get the fantastic RF 50mm f1.2L? Probably not...I just don't use a 50 that often, I'm more of a 35/85 combo guy and a 24/50 guy.

The Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS will be available globally on January 26, 2023

Yes!! FedEx apparently found it and it was delivered today. Its very fast focusing. Only had an hour or two to try it out. This was with the R3, rf135 at about 12 feet away. Not the best picture but does give some bokeh info, in front and behind.View attachment 210167
Awesome! And great shot! I might get out for a portrait shoot this weekend. Samples will follow if I do.

Canon officially announces the PowerShot V10 and launch of the PowerShot V camera series

I have it! Bought Advanced vlogging kit. Took it to Wroclaw (Europe, Poland) for a short trip to test photo mode. I did some short YouTube cinematoc vlog (I am not preparing English subtitles as we do not speak much and most of it are non-translatable inside jokes.

But please enjoy some shoots!

Canon has released firmware v1.0.7.1 for the Cinema EOS C70

I hear you. I haven't updated my C70 yet but it's been a crucial updated feature on my R5c.

Been shooting with it for a few days now, AF is very similar to the AF capabilities on the R5c’s cine interface and the ‘back of the head’ tracking is brilliant for following shots. Definitely an improvement and feels quite solid.

But dat WFM… nice.

No new bugs found yet. Still issues with the camera freezing when trying to control it via USB C or Lanc, but that’s been outstanding and unresolved for close to a year now.

Canon EF-EOS R mount adapters are going up in price

Canon probably noticed Nikon was getting $250 for their plain Jane F to Z adapter and got jealous. Or maybe they saw Sigma getting around $250 and Metabones nearly $400 to adapt Canon EF to Sony E-mount. (But they are starting to see some much less expensive competition.)
Last time I looked, the Canon VND drop-in adapter with separately sold clear drop-in filter would set you back about $560. Or the Meike VND drop-in adapter that includes the clear drop-in costs $160. Besides the massive price difference, reviewers who tested both report the Meike VND works better than the Canon VND (less color tints). Not to mention, Meike offers a bunch of other drop-in filters Canon doesn't.
The Meike filters work in the Canon adapter.
The only real issue that I have is that Canon does not sell the adapter at a lower price without any filters.
Kolari Vision and Breakthrough also have a bunch of filters.

Hollyland launches the LARK MAX Duo wireless microphone system

I have the first version of this Hollyland set, the duo. For what it is, I have no complaints. It’s quick and easy to set up, batteries are decent (with the case providing extra on site charging) and it’s hard to complain about the output.

This second version would be a great buy. I don’t need the upgrade but if you’re in the market, I wouldn’t worry about pulling the trigger on a purchase.

For comparison, I also have a Deity 3 pro (shotgun mic) and it’s pretty shoddy in comparison. In an interview I’d never purposefully use the shotgun on my a-cam!

Angelbird launches new Type B SE and SX CFexpress cards with higher capacity and performance

This is from the CEO of Angelbird in regards to the card reader requirement for firmware updates.

The communication between the software and the card must be stable and secure, plus the commands have to be interpreted the correct way.

If there is one thing that goes wrong or wrongly translated, the card will be locked / dead.

So the update process is not trivial and we have to make sure it will be successful.

Every reader on the market is using different controller ICs and FW. So that’s the reason we only support our own readers.

Tamron 17-50mm f/4 optical formula appears in latest patent

Whether RF or EF, I believe, is dependent upon the back focus distance? So what is that for RF?
Flange distance for RF is 20mm, but back focus can be less if the rear element protrudes behind the flange. From an optical physics perspective, this design should be applicable to any of the FF mirrorless mounts.

Beauty of Sweden | Canon R6 + Sirui Anamorphic 50mm CINEMATIC

Been to Tromso couple of years back with my best friend. Also tent, but not with a car due to distance. In may it was full winter over there so our nights in a tent were like pretty cold ones :D

It is true that peoples right is on - but in south of Sweeden there are many signs with information than camping is forbidden, especially if the there is a close camping and there are many over there in Skane. Still, perfect place for those who dont need much.

Which lens to buy?

Birding who wants to make the plunge into the big boy canon lenses. Weight is an issue as i like to bird with a camera and hiking may be an issue with a heavy lens. Current set up Canon R5 and 100-500 7.1

Option 1: Canon rf 600 f4
Heavy and pricey but looks to be an awesome lens. Would get me more reach and some very nice shots

Option 2: Purchase the 200-500 f4 and the rumored super Teleconverter. Probably pretty heavy but maybe lighter than the 600 not sure. I like the many options this gives me. At worst I have the same focal length I’m used to but f4 to f7.1 is a noticeable difference I believe. With the Teleconverter I could extend and have 700 at 5.6 which also would be great. Then for certain scenarios like ID shots etc I would be at 1000mm f8 which quite frankly sounds great. Probably pretty heavy and maybe 20k when it’s all said and done yikes

Option 3: purchase 100-300 2.8 and stack a 2xTC and be at 600 f5.6. Not sure of the weight but I’m thinking this would be the smallest and lightest of the options. I don’t like that I would never use the lens without a Teleconverter really. This would also maybe be the cheapest of the options.

Love the insight and feedback from this forum. Thank you
Ok..I have been a bird Photographer for 25 years .. about ten years ago I also wanted to make the leap to Big White Glass . Did not have a lot of money or did not want debt so what did I do ... looked on line and elsewhere for what the prospects were to buy a used lens in MINT condition .well at that time I found someone in California with several very special MINT lens ..and the one I wanted ..a 500f4 mk I... a bit heavy but very clean ..like new condition .. paid 5000 and lucked out .. it was as he said with Case .keys all accessories that came with this older lens ..auto focus . etc. got a TC 1.4 and 2.0 mk 3and the rest is history as they say .. then I saw a 300 f2.8 in MINT condition 3500 and jumped on that so I would have a walk around lens that was not so heavy . converters worked well with both lens .the 1.4 is a step up of course but now a days with Topaz and my old friend photoshop the 2.0 TC is not as bad as it would have been years earlier. I use R5 and did use the 5dsR till I got the R5 when it first came out . Long story short ..LOL .. I suggest you try to find a 500 f4 Mk II in MINt or excellent condition and you will be amazed how good your work will improve ... the500 f4 Mk II is much lighter than my older model ( You can look up the relative weights on line )and it should work great for you . If not a 300 f2.8 used MK II in MINT or excellent condition will asls be great . I use both rigs every day and you won't ragret it ... BUT and this is a big "but ' be safe and find a trusted place . or person . OR....if money is not a big obstacle get a 600 f4 mk III (if you can find one )..they are very light .. and it would be the ultimate lens ... the new RF ones600 f4 and the 100-300 f2.8 are so ,so, so overpriced (ridiculous) you would have to be crazy or rich . remember the EF to RF converter works perfectly so you do not need an RF lens . Im 74 years old and as of now don't have a big problem with my HEAVY lens and do not have any budget to move up ..Im quite happy with what I have . the new ..if real 200-500 f4 will be crazy high price and you will really only shoot at 500 anyways ... so beware ..and at the bizarre money they will want you might be foolish . again if you have money to burn well than go crazy and get all the new big whites ...hahaha ..$ 50,000.. lol . thats my two cents .. and if you need more help email me at [email protected]. Have fun .. keep shooting. Jimmy
