Canon price gouging in UK

Nikon and Sony charge the same in the UK as in the EU, give or take daily variations in the exchange rate. Canon charges the UK 10-15% more than the EU. I mailed CPS in the UK about this, and they replied quickly. The gist was that the pricing is determined by Canon Europe and not by Canon Japan. Canon Europe has to charge the same over Europe but they can do what they like with us in the UK.

I certainly haven't noticed from the times I have lived in the USA that Americans have less spending power than Europeans, quite the reverse. This borne out in tables of the average wages in the world where you can see the USA is close to the top and above most EU countries (only Luxembourg in the EU is above them) and earnings far more than inthe UK.
The "average" income in the U.S. is distorted by the incomes of the top earners, who earn a more disproportionate share of the total than the top earners in Europe, and who have also figured out way to beat the U.S. tax code and pay little to no real income tax. The "median" consumer in the U.S (that is, the consumer who has buying power that is more than the lower half of other consumers and less than the upper half of other consumers) has less buying power than the median consumer in Europe.

The Canon EOS ‘R5s’ may be in the hands of testers [CR2]

I mean, 90 mp makes sense. Just over double the R5's resolution, and the 5DS was just over double the 5D's resolution.

I wonder what frame rate they'll pull off with 90 mp. I would bet on the high end maybe around 8-9, 10 would make sense because double the data at half the speed, but the R5 only does 12 bit silent at 20 so with even more data I doubt they'll hit 10 fps.

The 50 MP 5Ds/5Ds R were introduced in 2015 and were just over double the resolution of the 22 MP 5D Mark III that had been around since 2012. But the next year after the 5Ds/5Ds R were released, the 30 MP 5D Mark IV was unveiled replacing the aging 5D Mark III. The 5D Mark III used DiG!C 5, the 5Ds/5Ds R and 5D Mark IV all used DiG!C 6.

Tokyo Olympics 2021 Media Rules and Restrictions

That doesn’t sound onerous to me. I work in places that have had 14 day isolation quarantines in force for months. No pledges to be good and limit movements, no freedom of movement at all! You spend 14 days in government approved accommodation entirely isolated, your meals are brought to you and left outside the door.

If I am going to another country I fully respect their rights to limit my ’freedoms’ as they see fit to best protect their population. 14 days in quarantine and then be allowed ‘normal’ freedom to move within the country is perfectly fine by me and an across the board science based limitation in today’s world.

But there are many countries that are much more restrictive than these Japanese rules.

What is sad is the inevitability of somebody, probably a competitor, that thinks their excellence and performance means the rules don’t apply to them and will break those rules they freely agree to before going there.

2nd body, conflicted 5DS vs 5D4

I use a 5Ds and also a 5D4. Why? Because the EOS 5Ds (R) is hardly suitable for taking effective photos in less than ideal lighting conditions. The 50MPixel sensor is hardly free of noise above ISO600. That restricts. The EOS 5DMK4 is incredibly sensitive and does not rustle that quickly. This makes the camera a reliable system even under difficult lighting conditions. Alternatively, an EOS R could be used. I use this especially with low-light.

Firmware: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV v1.3.2

Canon supports the EOS5Ds(r) too, yet. I got the usb30 port compatibility issues too and the update solve this similar like on my 5d4. I don't use an Mac and would plan this.
Interesting since there hasn't been a reference in anything USB related in EOS 5DsR firmware updated.

Patent: Canon shows off optical formulas for APS-C RF mount kit lenses

The answer is cost, lots of APS-C users do not want to pay for an R5 since it's more then what they need.
Yes indeed, but it's not just the cost of the camera body. It's also the cost of lenses. Lenses like 18-55, 55-250, and 10-18 are bargains. For example, the 10-18 can be had for $300, while RF ultrawides currently are an expensive proposition.
I recently picked up a Tokina 14-20mm f/2 and have been using it for astrophotography. It's tack-sharp and coma-free, and I've had a lot of fun with it. The lens is not without its foibles, but at 369 USD I think I got a bargain.

Does anyone have issues with the R5 focusing to infinity and not on a close up subject using the RF 100-500 mm lens?

I don't understand what you are getting at. Is it that you think the R3 might have solved the focus problem?
I don't think anything. I was simply intrigued by the lens models that were found near the R3 in promotional materials, and I decided to share my observations with the world.

R5 Timelapse Interval Timer Not Working

Hi....I likewise experienced issues with the stretch clock the previous evening. I set the camera for a timespan second and needed to shoot 60 pictures. With a 30 second openness, the clock worked for 2 or 3 pictures and afterward incapacitated. a 25 second openness with a 3 second span worked for 8 pictures prior to impairing. earlier today I changed the settings to catch "limitless" pictures (00) - this appears to work with no issues.

I don't like the new lens designs

I've always wondered why someone would complain about music not being rendered faithfully. I think you make good points about getting used to certain distortions, and ears being "unsullied by live performances". I'm curious about tape hiss adding a sense of openness and clarity -I don't quite understand that, but maybe it's similar to the way noise can add a sense of sharpness to a photo?
On some headphones that are unforgiving wirh high frequencies but very rewarding if you get a good match (like Senn HD800S, Focal Utopia) the "clinical" component becomes very important NOT to have in the amp/dac. Meaning, you can take two amps that post the same flat frequency response and similar low distortion but one will sound noticably worse (sometimes to the point of discomfort) than the other with these specific headphones. Similarly, you don't want hardware that has the high frequencies rolled off or muted because that eliminates the point of the higher detailed headphone.

LIke bokeh, there are components of audio that cannot be effectively measured yet and these can make all the difference if the speaker/headphone reproduces them

R5 and EOS Utility downloads to computer not complete.

Since the problem already happened several times, I will reinstall the previous version to check if this version works fine.

I tried but no success: you must go back for all installed components to the previous versions, not just the main program, otherwise the program won't run anymore. I didn't try to reinstall all components to previous versions. So I reinstalled the latest version.

But I tried some things and maybe it's related to the quick preview functionality. I turned it off, from that moment I didn't happen anymore.

Firmware: Canon releases firmware v1.3.1 for the Canon EOS R5

I don't believe this has anything to do with cards. Lock ups are occurring because something is wrong with the camera. My case where the camera was freezing up just from the animal eye auto focus tracking isn't the first. Folks need to get warranties on these cameras. At this point I don't trust Canon (which is sad to say). I am all on board for the latest tech, but right now my R5 is a big disappointment. I'm hoping the newly replaced 'circuit board' fixes things. It's upsetting we spend $4000 dollars on a camera for MANY folks to have lock up issues and for Canon's repair policy to be one of limited communication. Replacing the 'circuit board' doesn't tell me anything other than Canon is 'hoping' that this fixes the issue. Time will tell. I bought the 4 year extended car pack so it will be tested. I think if Canon gave more care to launching the R5 many folks (including me) wouldn't be running into these issues. It's like Windows 95 all over again.
Unfortunately these lockups are happening for different reasons for different people. This might be why Canon is just changing the circuit board and hoping it fixes the problem. Someone on this forum only had lockups with a specific lens and card combination and having the circuit board replaced made no difference for them. For me the lockups only ever happened when I tried to use my Sandisk 512gb CF express card.

In my case I changed to an SD card and have had 0 lockups over a 4 month period with over 6000 photos taken. So in my personal experience and with my specific camera it does indeed seem to be card related. But I will be sure to report back to the forum if this changes.

In your case it sounds a bit more extreme and a warranty repair sounds like the right thing to do…

Canon Successfully Develops the World’s First 1-megapixel SPAD Sensor

Single photon avalanche. Suggesting that it is as sensitive to light as technically possible (can't do better than one photon, right?). Very low light capability, with very fast 'reset' time, in an array. Single pixel devices have had this sort of capability for years, but not an image sensor (to the best of my knowledge).

The Phantom's require a lot of light to work. I use them in the lab, and we use a multi-watt (not milliwatt) laser for illumination.
I have no idea what you do for work, but I wish my work sounded like that!

A firmware update to address the IBIS issue is coming, no date yet [CR3]

Nothing to be upset about, Canon Techs are told not to speculate of any issues until there is a fix. I am very friendly with a couple of the CPS Canada Techs and they all stay away from the forums or rumors because facts matter and that is it.

BTW if you are talking about the IBIS wobble in video on the R5 and RF15-35. Wide angle plus IBIS = wobble\warping.
From a business standpoint, it can only hurt you when you don't get out in front of issues such as these. They don't need to get caught up in rumors but should place some emphasis on acknowledging and addressing issues. This has already been said many times, especially with the overheating. Canon has their heads up their ass though and choose to ignore there is this thing called the internet where people talk and bad news travels quickly.

I have a Panasonic GH5 and no wobble when using FF lenses with Metabones. 16-35, takes the entire sensor and I would have to give it a jolt to get wobble.

On the R5 w/15-35, it's almost as if whatever is balancing the sensor is not strong enough. Any slight movement causes wobble. I have to be very steady and avoid wobble. If they can't fix the issue then they should give the shooter a re-shoot warning.

New images and info regarding EOS R3 pops up on Canon USA website

So 5.6k(which is what I assume it is oversampled from) is 12mp?
Another consideration is the cost of the codecs for 4k/8k - such discussion came out when people were disappointed with the announced specs of the 5DIV. Maybe that is one of the sacrifices to keep the cost of the R3 down as an A9 competitor?

Here are more images of the Canon EOS R3

As of "now" there is no EVF in the world that offers all the advantages of an OVF for sports in bright light. Bloom, Lag, Color, Noise

Exactly - and yet you pointed out that Sony is stealing Canon's market share even with an EVF. So how important is a OVF in the general scheme of things?

But if the R1 is not "at least" double the resolution of the 1DXMKIII it will not sell as expected.

That means that 40MP will not work... As most of you know,,, 40MP is NOT double the resolution. User determined file size from 85MP down to accommodate buffer to a sweet spot of 15fps RAW. Sports photographers know how to change files size...... ;)

Well you had better tell all those photographers who bought the 1Dx3 over the 5DIV they were wasting their money, then.

Telling us "all you need is 20MP" is an insulting and condescending "script" in 2021.... as it was in 2020.
Canon never said that. When the 1Dx3 came out they said that photographers they spoke to found 20MP to be sufficient considering the pro need for rapid transmission of files which meant reduced file size. Personally I think they used that as a fudge - instead of admitting they did not have the technology to bring out a 50MP sensor they knew that 20MP was (and still is) enough for a working pro in a vast majority of circumstances and used that to cover their butts. It is amateurs like me who rely heavily on cropping to get a good composition.

Some would go so far as to say.... remove the video from the IDXMKIII... Utilize the new focus system, double resolution and keep the OVF. A specialized "Stripped Down" camera for sports professionals.

Right... so given the flak Canon had for the video quality of the 5DIII and 5DIV, and how internet opprobrium (or lack of it) has become a vital part of marketing, they are no going to bring out a top-of-the-range camera with no video at all. I am so glad you are not head of Canon's design team or marketing team.
Besides, how much do you think video adds to the cost of a camera?

Improve sealing,
Why? How?

Canon EF 600mm f/4 III with Canon extender 1,4 III?

So imagine this (while cringing). Put the RF 2.0 onto your camera. Then an EF-RF converter, then the EF 1.4 and whatever EF lens on.

Somehow, I doubt that would work.
Your doubts are justified. For a start, the RF-EF converter (which I assume is what you really mean) doesn't fit on to the RF extenders because of their protuberances. You can hack the RF-EF extender by drilling or filing away part of it, virtually down to the bare wiring. Even then, this would increase the distance from the rear of the lens to the extender. For the fun of it, I used the RF-EF extender plus Kenco 3xTC + Canon 2xTC + 400mm f/4 DO II to give a DO 2400mm f/24! Can't say it was worth the effort.

Portable Battery Power - Canon R w/ Grip

I use an Anker PowerCore Fusion 10,000 with a thick USBC to USBC to charge a Canon R with a grip. The Anker has pass through power so it will charge when its plugged into a wall outlet, if the power cuts or its unplugged it uses its 10,000 battery. Usually I pull the R battery tray in and out slightly and switch power on/off and it starts charging via the grip. It charges quickly.

There is another newer Anker that's similar, it's a 60w with 2x USBC, white, similar shape, which incidentally will handle a Surface Pro 7 supposedly, but I havent tried it yet, I'd like to though. Either way, the PowerCore Fusion 10,000 works. It's more pleasing than the bulky external power cord, or using the small square battery chargers, thus requiring the batteries to be removed from the grip. (Of course, I have to pull the grip batterys out anyway to prevent exceptional phantom drain when not in use.)

It may not have that much purpose in the field, but it could. I don't know if it will "power the camera", perhaps. It only seems to work with exceptionally thick USBC to USBC cables and I opt for very short ones I had already. For me it is better than the bulky charger with the cords and is not much larger than the small wall chargers but has a lot more utility. Hope that makes life easier. That's a TSE-45 on the Canon R with the adapter if anyone was curious. Great walkaround lense ;)

Panasonic announces the LUMIX GH5M2 as well as the development of the LUMIX GH6

Sounds like a problem with your work; I've had amazing results, significantly better than anything I was getting out of a Canon camera at that price point (the XXD series or even like a 7D).

Yeah, sounds like they managed to squeeze a little more dynamic range with some coatings, but, this is clearly merging available parts and supply lines to keep customers happy til a GH6 hits.

Im personally very excited for when the GH6 releases and the GH5II prices hit $1000 on the used market so I can grab a second body
The video was blurry, as I relied on autofocus. My Panasonic would constantly lose focus on people's faces. Canon's DPAF fixed that for me. I have no interest in trying to focus manually. The actual quality of the footage from the Panasonic was great though.
