Patent: Quad pixel AF sensor

Thanks, Canonmike! I'm probably just one of the many who have predicted that Canon would have to eventually come out with BSI sensors as you can only have so much circuitry blocking your photo receptors before there is insufficient light for them. But thanks for seeing my post on it and mentioning it.

I also remember "guessing" early on that the price of the RF 100-500L would be the same as the RF 70-200L ($2,700 as I figured rounding was appropriate). So I missed by $1 on that one. Well, that one was just a lucky guess (I've guessed prices on others that have missed as well).

The one I like to remember was when I saw the early patent post for the RF 800mm DO lens. I noticed 2 things: it didn't have any IS elements indicated in it (obviously they did add IS to it in production) and that there were absolutely no lenses in the back of it so that I predicted it would have a collapsing ability to shorten it's length by ~30% or so for storage. That one I nailed!

Now, if I only knew which way the stock market was going ...
Ha! Ha!. When you figure that out, I hope you share your info with the same insight and enthusiasm as your camera predictions. Now, go get to work on it.

The benefits of the large diameter of the EOS R’s RF mount explained

Curious how the new RF mount can benefit supertelephoto technology.
would be nice to see some interesting new supertelephoto lenses like a 500mm 5.6, 200-600mm, 600mmf5.6 or f8 feel these will sell very well. Don’t believe it would canabalize the f4 sales either. Just like 16-35f 2.8 vs f4 or 70-200mmf2.8 and f4 some people would be happy with abit less weight but good performance. Like some of the older seasoned pros who sometimes would like to lug around something less backbreaking.
It nice to have options.
like look at the comparision of the Nikon 500mmf4 vs f5.6

Patent: Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM

But the problem becomes one of getting what we ask for without realizing the costs.

I love that Canon still essentially give us access to relatively uncooked RAW files, I hate that Sony don’t and that they use up a portion of their editability by covering up the lensEs shortcomings. But you know what will happen next if we keep drinking that cool aid? Canon will be forced to doctor their RAW files even more to ‘keep up’, which isn’t keeping up at all it is dumbing down.

In the scheme of things T stops are an irrelevant distraction from the much bigger issue of cooking RAW files.
Cooking RAWs is a different thing and has nothing to do with T-stops IMO.

But as physicist I agree 100% with your opinion about cooking RAWs: It is a no go. I want the real original really raw data - processing should be a separated step done independently and without any loss of the original data. That was always the reason to use RAW - exploit more and more information with increased knowledge and processing power about/of computers.

Canon R5 VF jitter

Known issue with slow shutter speeds and high iso.

I was able to reproduce this issue but for the life of me I cannot think why anyone would be shooting with a Shutter Speed of 1/100(or lower) ISO 3200 or Higher and be panning the Camera.

What is the use case for doing this?
Motion blur effects/trails with available light. Like if trying to track cars in the evening...

EOS R level calibration

OK..thanks.. Will go through CPS and get that recalibrated. What makes you think the sensor is bad?
Hi dtgphoto,

I got my EOS RP repaired three months ago and maybe they replaced a board. Today I was outside the first time with that camera and I observed the same issue: roughly 3 degree off consistently. Do you had success with calibration/repair?

(Methodology of the test: making 4 photos of a vertical line (window rim) through the center of the image in different orientations (portrait 90 deg rotation landscape 90 deg rotation etc.).

RF 100-500 compared to EF 100-400 1.4

Remember to tell what you see afterwards. Have a nice one.
Sold the 400 and 600 this week. And lost quite a bit of money. So decided that I am going to try and live with the Tamron 150-600 G2 as a stopgap till the rumored 200-500 f4(with tc?) is released, hopefully next year. That way I wont lose a lot of money again. I had a 400 F4.0 DO II that I sold to finance the 400 F2.8 III. I never should have done it, realised it was my favourite lens, but too late!!!!

Elizabeth Tower, London

Picture of Elizabeth Tower, which houses the famous Big Ben bell. Picture taken from my home approximately 4 miles away.

View attachment 197149

Taken on the R5, using RF 800mm f11 lens, 2x converter, and the optional 1.6x crop. ISO 32000, 1/8 second.

If you look closely at the top of the tower, you can see the main bell (Big Ben). The light in the tower was installed to show Queen Victoria that one or other of the Houses was sitting at that moment. Sadly, I can't do much to hide the scaffolding surrounding the clock tower.

As an aside, I was very happy with how the Millenium Eye frames it,
I'm envious of where you live and your view.

How many EF/RF mount lenses do you own?

My original Rebel is gone, as is my 5D classic, but I still have my 40D and 60D, though not used often. My 6D gets used most, but when I know I need to crop, the 5DsR is amazing. With the pandemic the number of shutter clicks in the last year is appallingly low. I hope we can resume our travels out of the country in 2022. I cannot remember the last time I used the EFS 15-85mm. All my other lenses are EF, and the 24-105 pretty much lives on my 6D when traveling. Least used EF is the 85mm f/1.8 and 300 f/4, but for BIF the 400mm f/5.6 is still my go to lens. My tabular list:
400 5.6
300 4.0
100-400 II
70-200 2.8 II and 4.0 I
85 1.8
50 2.5 (quantity 2)
24-105 4.0
16-35 4.0
15-85 variable f number

Opticallimits reviews RF 85mm f/1.2

Sorry, but I'm getting fed up with all this "objective" (MTF) - "subjective" (bokeh") testing.
Real user experience is what I want to hear, not test-chart results, or self-declared expert judgments.
Reading reviews is only one tiny part in my decision -taking, I rather rely on CR member's opinion.
The RF 1,2/85 is a wonderful lens. Period!

It's all about taste and personal preferences. I think it's quite good actually. Don't think I'll use it that much thou, but time will tell :)

Here is the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

An interesting apples to oranges (but useful) size comparison for those still using EF system partially or wholly (or looking to get deals on EF stuff)
[thanks to camerasize.com]. Battle of the travel zooms!

EOS R6 + RF 70-200mm f/4L IS
vs
EOS 6D II + EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS

Personally I find a 70-200 f/2.8 + 70-300 f/4-5.6L combo more interesting with its extra reach than a 70-200 f/2.8 + 70-200 f/4. Might be worth seeing what Canon does for RF 70-300L if you already have the RF 70-200 2.8.

Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM

After owning many lenses in the 35mm range I came to grips with the fact that at least for me this lens is the best EF city street photography lens, period; fast, wide, inconspicuous, and the IS is nice for traffic motion shots. I ended up rebuying it after selling it some time ago. Not perhaps as colorful as the 35L but offers functional and practical benefits the L lacks.
