Two New Professional Lenses Coming Ahead of Photokina? [CR1]

Michael Clark said:
Just because it is slightly less sharp at 50mm than it is at 24mm or 70mm does not mean it is softer at 50mm that every other 50mm lens on the planet! It is still a very good performer at 50mm that exceeds most, if not all, of the other zoom lens options. The difference between 875/700 and 920/750 is trivial unless you are printing very large display sizes and viewing at very close distances.

Those other options might be as good at 50mm as they are at 24mm or 70mm, but who cares when those other lenses are softer everywhere, all the way from 24-70mm, than the 24-70/4 is at 50mm? Just because it is not at its own best at 50mm does not mean it is not still the best zoom at 50mm.

Yeah, what can I say. I use 24-70/4 as a product photography staple and the photographs are perfect. There is nothing lacking in the images, nor any way a client wouldn't be impressed -- even when zoomed to the pixel, which is something that is never done in practice.

I haven't seen either, have you?
So I would expect another year to pass.

I heard from a Canon source that the 7DIII will indeed be announced this year. Probably at Photokina

Hopefully your source is right and I'm (and CR) proven wrong, because looking at the competition, I'd say a 7D3 is needed earlier than later.
I agree with this opinion.

Patent: Optical Formula for an EF 800mm f/5.6L IS II

Another lens, which just needs a new color to match other lenses… 200mm f2 will follow.

(Sorry for joking all around about lens recoloring. Just can't recover after 70-200 f2.8 announcement.)

Now seriously, the 800mm needs a good update. According to TDP's IQ comparisons, it doesn't perform really better than 500 or 600mm with X1.4 TC. If today I would want to get a telephoto longer than 600mm it would definitely be either 500 or 600mm with TC, giving 700 or 840mm reach respectively and, of course, the shorter focal length with wider aperture as an option.

Beautiful photos on your website. You are truly a master. :)

Canon zoom for portraits incl new 70-200

The 70-200/2.8 II is my go-to zoom for portraits (and I have no interest in updating to the MkIII). I use the 70-300L for travel.
+1 on the 70-200 (don't have the 70-300L yet)

Watch the Canon refurbish store for the 70-200 f2.8 IS Mark II. You can get a good price for this lens that has been checked out by Canon and backed by Canon's one year warranty.

This is my goto lens for most things including indoor sports, school events, portraits, and capturing little tikes around the house or the back yard. I love this lens for candids of people of all ages. Every lens in my signature line has a valuable purpose for me, but none more than this one.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Information Ahead of Tonight's Announcement

It wouldn't surprise me if Canon was not fully disclosing all the info on these two lenses and perhaps many of the L lenses that have been upgraded and or newly released in the last year or two. Such as; technology to make them work great and or excel on a mirrorless full frame machine they have yet to release.

I doubt Canon would be working on a full frame mirrorless body to offer without first making sure many of their top selling good L lenses will work flawlessly on it first.

just my opinion and me thinking out loudly ;)

I believe their full frame mirrorless they will reveal soon will be able to accept EF mount lenses.....

I think you just hit the nail on the head.

The new (admittedly goofy) 470EX-AI automatic bounce head flash was introduced in February 2018. It turned out that every new Canon EOS body introduced since mid-2014 (except the four digit xx00D/Tx Rebels) had the ability to run that new auto bounce head feature already built in. Canon included the needed hardware/software and left it hidden in those models for up to 3 1/2 years until they announced the 470EX-AI earlier this year!

Hotshoe cover for 5D3?

Just got mine as well. Fits fine on my 5D3 (and old T1i just for fun), and I threw a tiny patch of gaffer on top as I find the bubble level a bit distracting.

I wish is was just a bit longer front to back (see Labdoc shot, it's the same item) to stick out further towards my eye. The metal in the back is still very slightly exposed. It's a dramatically lower fabric catching risk, though, so I'm probably going to stick with it as made.

If it really bugs me I might exacto knife off 2-3mm from the front end of one of my two spares (4x come from Amazon) and glue it into a fullsized one for a longer version.

But otherwise I'm in business. Thanks, Labdoc. Good find!

Help me pick the right wide angle lens for Emperor Penguins

Hey Edward, how cool! The shots I mean. ;) And how cold was it?

Jack

Hi Jack, its an experience thats for sure, can become addictive though, as Catherine's Post indicates, once is never enough.

I prefer the Arctic, only because of the Polar Bears, and travel distances.

And it does get cold of course, had many a day of minus 40, plays havoc with the batteries, but I now get into the habit of using hand warmers wrapped around spare batteries, helps, doesn't help the hands of course, but its alway about priorities.

Images and Information About the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III and EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II

ethanz said:
I remember paying $2,300 or 2,500 when the 70-200 II came out. It would be a win for Canon if they priced it at or below that.

Thanks Fullstop. Amazing how much currencies fluctuate against each other.

When the "II" came out in 2010 the USD would only buy about 90 yen. That dropped to below 80 yen for most of 2011-12. By 2015 it had jumped to 120 yen per USD. That's when the new price of existing Canon lenses really started to drop in the U.S. It's now at about 110 yen per USD but competition from Sigma/Tamron/etc. has kept the U.S. prices around 2015 levels.

In 2010 $2,400 USD (what I paid for my 70-200/2.8 II in August 2010) was worth about 216,000 yen.
Today, in early June 2018 $2,100 USD is worth 230,600 yen. Canon is actually charging more, in yen, for the III at $2,100 USD in June 2018 than they were charging for the II at $2,400 in 2010.

LensTip Review: Tamron 70-210 f/4 Di VC USD

As someone who began their photographic career in the late '70s I avoided third partly lenses like the plague as they really were inferior to Nikkors, FDs, Takumars and so on. Then later there was the issue of compatibility with the all electronic cameras, but now I have to say that Dustin Abbott's reviews got me interested in the latest Tamrons as the AF seemed to be pretty good and there is the dock to make other adjustments and ensure future compatibility, and I now have the 45 and 85 SP VC, and they are both very good, the 85 stellar in fact. Also the AF is as good as any of my other Canon lenses, both lenses are 0 AFMA. ( The 45 varies at different distances but that's not unusual on a 35 - 50 mm lens ).

I was also put off Tamrons by the Lens Rentals tear down that showed the second element in the then 24-70 2.8 IS was just held in place with three spots of glue. Anyway the SP series seems to be pretty well made. The 85 has a remarkably heavy and strong lens hood, and I found that it made a very good sacrificial shock absorber when I tripped and fell in Scotland with the camera + 85 slung over my shoulder. As I went down the camera swung round, lens down and hit the stone path first with me on top of it. There was an almighty crunch as the lens hood took the load and split three ways, but there was no other damage apart from a few scrapes on the back of the camera. No de-centering, no AFMA issues.

So given the fact that they are around half to two thirds the price.......they are tempting.

18-135 STM vs USM

Now I've figured out the nano-USM is the one to go for, I agree with the general consternation, however here's the grey prices:

Review: Canon EOS M50 by TDP

You are convinced. Lol. A 50mm-equivalent lens is minority, but a 135mm-equivalent lens is being clamored for by the masses.

50 equivalent is not the issue. f/1.4 is, respectively the price i expect. Will make it a rather extreme "niche product". But, let's see. If it is compact, optically decent and USD/€ 299 I may re-consider. ;D

All prime lenses are niche products and have been so for a while now. I can't see much point in second guessing Canon on their assessment of the size of various prime lens niches.

Two Canon Lenses to Be Announced on June 7, 2018

traveller said:
The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8e is superior, especially at 135mm. Of course this doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the EF 70-200f/2.8L IS II, but it is a flagship pro lens and Canon really care about bragging rights.
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/11/nikon-70-200mm-f2-8e-fl-ed-af-s-vr-mtf-tests/
It's my understanding that Nikon's lens has a breathing problem that drastically reduces its max focal length for portrait work. I would be curious to see comparisons of focus tracking and IS between the two lenses. Nikon has or had a reputation for IS issues at high shutter speeds. Still, I would suggest that the 1Dx2 helps the Canon lens out perform the Nikon on Nikon bodies.

Canondude2018 said:
Why would Canon offer IS for it's 50mm 1.4 when it still sells the 1.2? The only one who would get IS would be an upgrade to the current 1.2.
For same reasons that Canon created the 35 2.0 and the 85 1.4 with IS instead of adding IS to their faster counterparts. I'm guessing that the IS is easier to impliment with smaller elements. Plus, slower lenses may benefit more from IS. My interest is with controlled motion blur where I don't really need f1.2, but f1.4 would be ideal for other needs.
