More About the EOS 6D Mark II Shows Up for Certification

No more GPS? Τhat is my favourite extra :(

+1 No idea how people manage without GPS tagging - but then I can't see how people manage without a tilty-flippy screen on a tripod, and most people seem to okay.

I think this thread relates to the radio (other?) testing of the device. My guess would be that it would therefore only detail electrical emission from the camera (i.e. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). Since GPS is passive (the device listens to the GPS signals it doesn't send them) it wouldn't get mentioned here.

Personally, I'm waiting for the first 'sighting' thread of the 6D mark 2. You know, the thread where we work out its detailed internal specs from an out-of-focus image, of a corner of the case, from a range of 100m :)

Correct

A FCC part 15 summary could be: it may only emit what the standard(s) allows.

Receivers still emit energy (i.e. local oscillator leakage), but these days you'd have to do a very poor job to get a receiver to fail an emissions test. A test house will only need to know about intentional emissions, and if they meet the relevant standard. GPS shouldn't emit, so doesn't need explicitly testing, other than to ensure it doesn't radiate, but you don't need to call up a GPS emissions test for that, it's just the same emissions test as any other non-radiating device.

Is the 77D sensor the same as the 80D sensor or not?

I had a chance to shoot with my new 77D in my new studio yesterday, side by side with my 5D3. I have to say that I am very pleased with the sensor performance. For most purposes, I don't think there will be a significant difference in the images from the two cameras, which was what I was hoping for. The 77D is a nice step up in image quality from my T5i and I do enjoy the top LCD screen and additional control dial.

I will see if I can find some work safe photos to post in the appropriate part of the forum.

on the first pictures the 11-24 it seems to be very similar to the TS-E (front element) - I never have compared it next to each other for details...

I have both. The 11-24 is much bigger and heavier (and it's particularly front-heavy) compared to the TS-E 17.

Where is the Sigma 14mm F1.8?

NancyP said:
Samyang 14 f/2.8 is pretty decent except for the godawful mustache distortion, which is less of an issue for landscape/astro than for architectural photography. (assuming that you got a centered copy). I would be tempted by the Sigma 14 f/1.8 if it has simpler distortion and low coma.

The Samyang 14mm f/2.4 actually does well on both counts. Simpler distortion and the best coma performance I've seen from any lens.

  • several EF, EF-S and EF-M lenses, including the new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM
  • several PowerShot bodies, including the G7X Mark II (that could be one for me :-\ )
  • some accessories
  • some video cams, inlcuding the XC10

Enjoy your GAS 8)

What would it take lens wise?

I've not felt the need to buy a new lens in a while. My last major FF lens purchase was the 16-35 f/4L in Nov 2015. I'm covered from 16-200 now on FF but I want to focus on my M lens collection. Eyeing that 18-150, right now I only have the 11-22 and 22/2, so need some more range.

Are we ever "done"? Nah I don't think so. Maybe we can be satisfied long term but eventually technology moves forward enough that we have to upgrade. Though I'm hoping my current set up will last at least another couple of years!

Breakthrough Photography Launches World's First Tempered GND & ND Filters

ijohnsson said:
I can see why one would use ND filters to extend exposures, but GNDs? Today? I used a ton of Singh-Ray GNDs in the 80s and 90s when I was still shooting film. These days it is so much easier to just bracket the exposures and blend in post.

Not only is it easier, the results from luminosity mask blending gives vastly better results than the use of GND's ever could.

It kinda brings back memories of when the goal was make cell phones so small you could barely hold them and now we have people walking around with 7" tablets for their phone.

The goal was to make cell phones small when they were mainly used for calling or maaaaaaybe light text messaging. For a lot of us, the voice part is about the fifth most important thing a cell phone does these days. At best. And the other things are improved by being larger.

Broncolor Siros L - battery powered monolights

Thanks guys!

I just ordered an AD600 after trying out one today, it costs nothing and with the 1dx2 is better than the B1 in absolutely every way, except I can't use those modifiers from Profoto, big shame, but I will live with that easier I guess.

Interested in how you found it better in absolutely every way, they are practically the same and there are many reviews comparing the two.

There seem to be several advantages/disadvantages to either but nothing in the basic functionality is a standout. The AD600 does have some very interesting features/options the Profoto doesn't, the remote head and the ability to use different triggers to get HSS or HS along with the power from the mains options are all good selling points, but basic functionality I haven't seen a standout 'better'.

The power is much more consistent, I get sharp pictures with HSS, it has an insane battery.

BUT, I cancelled my order due to modifiers and second guessing a cheap product, and a big reason was color consistency which was pretty poor...

So I just reordered the Broncolor Siros 800 L and I'll be using the Profoto OCF BD with bron speedring. Feel much better about it.

One question that I can't find asked, is what is keeping Canon from introducing the 6DII?

Is the cause marketing, market saturation, design, features, competition or what?

It's possible you are asking the wrong question. We don't know what Canon's time frame or target release date is, so it's entirely possible that nothing is keeping them from introducing the 6DII. They may be exactly on schedule for all we know.

Exactly.

How do you pack your gear/store it?

It really depends on my shooting needs. I have a plethora of camera bags.
If I'm doing landscape work, it's a large Lowepro back pack that can take a lot of kit. So a 8-15 fishy, TSe 17L, 16-35IIL, 24-70L, 70-200 f2.8 LIS II, 100LIS macro, plus filters, water, cleaning gear and extenders...plus 2 camera bodies and rain hoods.
If it's wedding work, I have two bags. A main bag, with all my normal swap outs. I harness up with three cameras, each with a lens and the bag (which I park near by...like under the cake) has my swap outs. My 2nd bag is in the car and that's got the very occasional use lenses, like a Sigma 12-24. It's also got my back up cams and back up lenses. These bags come from the think tank Urban range.
I have a 3rd bag and that's a flash rig. So it's got 2 flashes, stands, remotes, brollies, boxes...every thing I need for a mobile light up. But it's not really a camera bag...it's a flasher bag and it only gets used for the 1st dance, reception dance and if something's gone really wrong with the weather for the formals / portraits.

Canon S120. A small sturdy tripod.

Enjoy the holiday.

He will enjoy it more without a tripod.

He said he wanted lovely landscapes. The tripod is a must for that.
Agreed a big tripod will not be required. A small one for the small camera to enable low ISO (The sensor is small on these cameras)

These small sensors require f/5.6 or faster to avoid diffraction softening. That equates to exposures of 1/800s or faster at ISO 100 on a bright day. You don't need a tripod for that speed with a short focal length lens without IS. And most of these cameras have 4-6 stops of IS. A joy of these modern small cameras is that they free you from the pain of carting around even a small tripod. A tripod might have its uses but it is not a "must".

My bad Alan. I visualise landscapes photos only early morning or evening. Personality issues.

I'm with sanj on this one...I've heard the expression about those who go out in the midday sun, and it doesn't include photographers. ;) Particularly, 'stunning landscapes' and 'bright days' aren't generally a good match, IMO.

But a Gorillapod would do the trick for a small camera. This one was with a Gorillapod SLR Zoom attached to the railing of one of the Golden Jubilee Bridges over the Thames.
