Asking price is $1599 ;D....just kidding. I'm not in the hurry to sell my 50L, maybe not at all.

Current market only has few f1.2 lenses with AF. If the new Sigma is REALLY that good, then I don't mind adding a 3rd 50mm lens to my bag. At this moment, I strongly believe I have enough weapons to fight most challenging photography battles - from super sharp to smooth Bokeh etc...

So far…best prices on good condition used 50L's I've seen are in the $1250-$1295 range…..slightly more for refurbe from the Canon site from time to time….

Can anyone verify the real world focal length of this lens. When I compared my old Sigma 180mm f3.5 macro to the Canon version, I found my Sigma was a lot wider at 1/2 macro.

The other approach, for square/rectangular filter users, is to get one of the very expensive very large CPLs that attach to an adapter that fits onto the square filter holder. For the Lee system, this requires a $70.00 adapter and a ~$300.00 105mm CPL. I am still debating about whether I want to go this route, which compels one to carry and use the Lee holder whenever one wants to use a CPL, or buy an 82mm CPL and attach the Lee system adapter to the front of the CPL (possible hard vignetting on my 21mm lens). Hoods are still a PITA, I have a standard Lee compendium hood (found used) that attaches to the Lee filter holder. Many people just use appropriately positioned (handheld) black flags.

All great suggestions. I like the idea to photograph a stopwatch or very precise digital timing instrument.

I don't know why either - we actually use Bilsi for shipping to Canada (as opposed to Purolator), who collect from us then hand off to FedEx. It's the same duty-paid service so the cost should be the same.

Actually, that's a fairly modest price. Although add in a appropriate tripod, and for astrophotography a tracking system, it still seems like a fairly low investment of a $1-2K for a nice image quality.

You'll not find anything as large as Adorama/B&H in SF, but I can personally recommend Glass Key Photo in SF, and the Looking Glass, just outside of the city in Berkeley. These are independently run, small businesses that have given me fantastic service, with staff that have been a real pleasure to work with.

You're in for a real treat as the weather has been unusually warm and sunny. Enjoy your time in SF!

With the Otus as exception, most other 50's have to stop down 1.5+ stops or so to keep up with the Sigma wide open. Looks really promising.

Bryan Carnathan's most excellent TDP website has posted a very nice head to head of IQ of the Sigma 50 Art against 7 similar focal length primes, including the Canon L, Canon 50 1.4 and the Zeiss Otus:

His IQ comparisons are fun if you haven't used them before. You mouseover the sample shot and the arrow indicator flips to show what image is being shown. You can change the aperture and see what changes, and he'll eventually even run the same test on crop body (note: he only has FF data on the new Sigma 50 right now).

By my eyes on these sample shots, the new Sigma Art thoroughly trounces the Canon 50L (as expected) and the Canon 50 F/1.4 (though it's pretty similar after F/4 or so). The Zeiss, to me, looks sharper wide open, esp. in the corners. Maybe that's what +$3k buys for you.

Of course, this is not the end-all be-all for a lens review. I'm sure Bryan will write quite an opus on this one in the next week or two.

But it's looking good. Have at it and see for yourself!

I hope the recently announced lens tamron 28-300mm, along with this one, has an acceptable level of IQ so, I can simplify somehow the number of lenses to carry during my holidays.
Nikon makes a fenomenal 28-300mm for FF at a cost around $800 and Canon has the monster EF 28-300mm L that cost $2,000+ so, the only hope Canon users in budget have is this Tamron.

Note the softness of the background despite shooting at f/7.1. The background is just a sheet. It keeps me warm at night and provides a nice pale blue for backgrounds. I think we have other colors of sheets.

Just got my package.
I had completely overestimated the size (and it had been a major hang-up from deciding between the f/1.4s and the f/2 IS). It isn't tiny, but still quite compact, very well-balanced on my 5DIII with L-bracket and has a great feel to it.
I didn't check AFMA via FoCal yet, but initial tests seem to show no adjustment needed (both with center and peripheral spot focusing, do I need to test anything else?).
The refurb lens arrived in a nicely padded shipping box, with the regular Sigma white and black box and all the usual suspects inside. Only the warranty sticker says 90 days refurbished limited warranty.
The lens is cosmetically spotless.
FYI, for those considering Sigma refurbs.
Very happy. Very.

Personally, I don't mind the same sensor as the 70D, but they would have to up the ante on everything else.
AF, metering, video capabilities.... Show us what the true potential of Dual Pixel tech really is...

Canon has been cornered by the D800, GH4 that whole line of A7 cameras....
Its time to show them who the top dog is... end of story.
