Fyi: This Magic Lantern dual_iso module doesn't only work on 5d3 anymore, but in the latest build on:

* 500d, 550d, 600d, 700d
* 50d, 60d
* 7d
* 5d2, 5d3

I just tried it on my 60d and I'd suggest for everyone to give it a try, there are hardly any artifacts at all in the latest release and it will make you realize how much of a difference it makes if 2-3 stops of dr are conjured out of thin air - I'm more convinced than ever that at least to me dr on my 60d's sensor is a limiting factor.

You can easily sew it on a machine. I redid my 200 1.8 so that it is in just 2 pieces as they got the seams misaligned

Can you compare the high ISO video performance of the two cameras (from 1600 to 12800) ?

Anybody got experience with this brand? I've used one and found it seems it loses more light than Hoya HD. Aside from that, I didn't notice any color cast so far.

Yes, that is the lens that made me ask the question. I have not handled the 16-35L. but the Sigma felt nice, that is why I was dreaming for an EF-S 17-55 of that type.

Ever think it could be your camera that is causing this 'bad marriage'? I'm just saying that when people talk about 'bad lenses' they conveniently ignore the fact that the camera also plays a very BIG part in the focusing equation...

Just like Noah, I have "two of each" and many a time one of my lenses works perfectly well (or only needs a little AF microadjustment) on body A but can't be made to work (i.e. achieve sharp images) on body B.

Did you try this lens on another camera? If you did, I missed it in the many replies and posts, if you didn't it might be worth your while to try it.

The OP is a prime candidate for a 70D! Staying with a crop body means there is no need to change shooting styles when going to FF from APS-C.

There's something mighty disturbing about pictures of planes with the propellers frozen like that. I feel like the next picture is going to show it with the nose stuck in the ground.

That is the delicate balance Canon (and I suppose all manufacturers do this dance) has to juggle. If the update is too great, everyone buys it but then the next model will have nothing to beat it with. If the update is too small, there is something left for the next but Canon risks no one buying this one in numbers that are profitable.

I can't praise A.J. Johnstones in Glasgow highly enough. They have done four repairs for me now (1 warranty, 3 accidental damage or faults, on 50mm 135mm Sigma 18-50 and 7D) in each case they've stuck to their (reasonable) estimates and schedule, and they've given me a bag bag with the duff parts and told me in laymans terms what was wrong.

Everything on the left of the 32 mark is aliasing (the converging lines on the top). Other sensors do that, too, to a different extent.

I bought a Holga Pin Hole lens a while back. It is very cheap and a lot of fun, though it does vignette on FF sensors. They are available on Flea Bay.

A lot of people seem only fixated on sensor performance.
Individual skill is hard to discuss, but there are other components responsible for a picture , like a lens

People usually focus on what they are missing in their gear( or on nikon/canon side)
And sometimes forget there are a lot of really good things already there.

If canon gets better sensors the coming years , I can see some trolls switch brands to make fun of nikons outdated lens designs and lack of sharpness.

Either way two competitive brands ensures we keep getting better gear at a fast pace ! , whether it is sensor performance, overall functionalities ( think wifi , gps , maybe 4k/raw video will be standard within a considerate amount of time) , lenses , or other related stuff (flashes / tc's )

I agree and competition is a great thing!

Here's one from left field: EF 100-300 f/5.6 L ....right around $300 used. It was my first L lens (for my 10D) and I still have it today. In fact I think I am the only one on the planet that still has one and still likes it. ??? I don't use it as much since getting the EF 70-300mm L IS L (a fabulous tele-zoom), but it's a terrific lens for the money if you can tolerate a fixed f/5.6 aperture and push-pull zoom design. Precursor to the EF 100-400mm IS L, it comes from the era of the vaunted Magic Drainpipe (EF 80-200mm 2.8 L) and has similar image characteristics: great color, great contrast and clarity and saturation... and just like the Drainpipe — it's BLACK! But the real clincher: it only weighs 695 grams! About the same as the EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L.

But if you want to spend 4X for the same range, get the EF 70-300 L IS. Modern, sharp, lighter than the 2.8 zooms and packs really well. Also, the EF 70-200 f/4 L (non-IS) for the money is really hard to beat, but I got rid of mine after getting the 70-300L.

Hi thanks, yeah, it's been calibrated by Reikan Focal. And I do get most shots in focus, andeven miss by 2 cm the shot is useless.

I have tried googling about inconsistencies in AF with the 200mm f2.0 and 100% of the hits I find is the opposite, NO inconsistency, incredible accuracy etc etc. And I'm very used to the 1dx, and I had MUCH better hitrate with my 70-200 mk2, so I'm starting to think that there might be something off with my lens...

That's an expensive item to be just a paperweight. Don't think twice. Send it in to Canon for evaluation. Or exchange as defective if it's still in the exchange period.

Mkii lenses incorporate closed loop AF which the 5d3 and 1dx utilize. Older lenses do not. I have the same issue and the 70-200 nails AF every time.

For f2 lense you may want to enable only cross type AF points. Default is to use them all. I've had better AF luck that way but typically on fast moving objects such as birds.

I can use the double-crosstype center and have the same sharpness and precision as the furthest outer one, I guess that is a good thing to begin with. I wish they did that firmware for the 200 as they did for the new mkII 300 through 600.

@dgatwood -- you are correct, good catches.

I was thinking of full native kernel support and ignored the FUSE user mode support (would allow read and write, but not format as I understand it). I had also missed this summer's leaked/released Samsung native kernel exFAT module kerfuffle (Thanks!). I doubt the lawyers are out of a job yet on that plus I suspect it is a little too soon to see it in a major Linux distribution. I smacked into this issue recently as an Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS user trying to use a 64GB SDXC card and wanted to alert others of a possible, even likely issue. Had not considered the PTP option -- I have been using card readers.

As for the comment regarding SDXC re-formatted to FAT32, that was influenced by the Amazon.com listings for the SanDisk microSDXC UHS-I 64GB cards which state "Compatible with microSDXC UHS-I enabled devices; Reformat into file system other than exFAT may cause instability". I have since briefly checked the SanDisk website and did not see a similar caution. Like you, I think one would probably not encounter a problem, but it is outside the SDXC spec and I would also try to stick with exFAT and deal with it in other ways.

Time to look into FUSE exFAT, PTP, and gPhoto!

Purchased the standard 67mm Lee adaptor ring. It's metal like my 77mm wide angle ring, works fine when used with Lee's 100mm filters/holder.

I agree completely about the 1DX vs. 5DIII. I think he's overstating things a lot other than high ISO shooting.

I also have to convince my (long-suffering) wife on this purchase but found a good combo this weekend for a slower moving critter this weekend:

I started with the 400mm f/5.6 + 1.4x III on my 5D Mark III - (560mm f/9):

And a lot more portable too, something to consider! I sold a Sigma 150-500 in favor of a Canon 100-400 and found that to be so handholdable that I haven't used (or missed) my monopod since.

The bigger the lens, the less mobile you (I) may be.
