Shot with an EOS-M

Got a chance to sit sideline at an NBA game. The camera rules indicated on the ticket were that no detachable lens camera/ lens combinations were allowed, and there were plenty of security types prowling the court when play was not in progress.

So I thought that the EOS-M and a 24-70 lens might sneak by, and it did. Needless to say no flashes were allowed either, but the light was surprisingly good.

I prefocused on the basket and tried to catch action that occurred around the net the best shot is below. Surprisingly the 24-70f 2.8 was almost enough lens. The pros that were shooting the game were firing the 1dx and what looked like a 200f2. Rebound photo ƒ/2.8 50.0 mm 1/800 800 Shutter speed priority AE

Liquidation of US stores has begun! Check your e-mails for the info.

Rockville, MD
Vienna, VA
NYC
Cambridge, MA
Chicago
Ft. Lauderdale
Santa Ana/Los Angeles/Escondido, CA

What kind of info was given? What hours are the stores open? I would swing by the Rockville one but I'm not on their email list.

Try calling them. They took down the phones when the stores closed, but they were answering them at the Cambridge store today.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art Gets Reviewed

I'm about to put my 50L on Ebay.... and it has nothing to do with this new 50mm Art.

I took my kids to Flower Field in Carlsbad yesterday. I carried A7r + FE 55mm. With Eye-focus feature in A7r, compose the shot is so easy. At wide open, I couldn't miss a shot. However, the Bokeh is not smooth as my 50L.

Bottom line is, I'm willing to trade that bokeh for light weight ;)

What's your asking price on the 50L?

:)

Asking price is $1599 ;D....just kidding. I'm not in the hurry to sell my 50L, maybe not at all.

Current market only has few f1.2 lenses with AF. If the new Sigma is REALLY that good, then I don't mind adding a 3rd 50mm lens to my bag. At this moment, I strongly believe I have enough weapons to fight most challenging photography battles - from super sharp to smooth Bokeh etc... ;)

LOL..ok.

So far…best prices on good condition used 50L's I've seen are in the $1250-$1295 range…..slightly more for refurbe from the Canon site from time to time….

I gotta see how much tax I gotta pay first….no word from CPA yet, so, maybe I don't owe….

Filters Question

The other approach, for square/rectangular filter users, is to get one of the very expensive very large CPLs that attach to an adapter that fits onto the square filter holder. For the Lee system, this requires a $70.00 adapter and a ~$300.00 105mm CPL. I am still debating about whether I want to go this route, which compels one to carry and use the Lee holder whenever one wants to use a CPL, or buy an 82mm CPL and attach the Lee system adapter to the front of the CPL (possible hard vignetting on my 21mm lens). Hoods are still a PITA, I have a standard Lee compendium hood (found used) that attaches to the Lee filter holder. Many people just use appropriately positioned (handheld) black flags.

Re: Lens calibration

I'm constantly at odds with my FoCal software. Having a 5Diii it doesn't do it 100% automatically and I have to alter the micro adjustment by hand. on longer lenses this must affect the position of the lens even if it's ever so slightly. if I run it more than once the results are all over the place. I have no idea what to trust with these things. I could go totally bonkers with micro adjustment. the ruler method is just as unreliable with just guessing what number you're focussed on vs. what number the auto focus has chosen to focus on in that little square.

Would you do it with a tripod in the same position or by hand and vary the distance slightly between the shots?
Lewis, have you seen my post on how I use FoCal with my 5DIII and 1D X? If not, you might want to give it a read to see if it helps.

B&H or Adorama

rdalrt said:
Would love to order from Adorama sometimes. But their shipping to Canada just isn't on par with B&H. I just tonight loaded up a cart at both Adorama and B&H. Many similar or identical items. Only difference is a refurbed SL1 in the cart at B&H.

Adorama total = $1079 + $244 shipping (UPS which I hate)
B&H total = $1544 + $228 shipping (Purolator)

Both including customs clearance.

Not sure why shipping from Adorama should be more on a smaller $$ order than B&H. My guess is because they are using UPS shipping to Canada which everybody knows is pretty much the biggest ripoff around.

So, B&H continues to get my monies.

I don't know why either - we actually use Bilsi for shipping to Canada (as opposed to Purolator), who collect from us then hand off to FedEx. It's the same duty-paid service so the cost should be the same.
I would be grateful if you could email me with your zip code plus the SKU # of the item so I can check why this has happened.
BTW we always do our best to at least price match , shipping as well as unit costs to equally reputable retailers, so I'd love to be able to get to the bottom of this asap. Thank you in advance: [email protected]

Lots of hate towards this lens (rightly so perhaps) but not many suggestions other then buying another camera or just using a 300m and cropping.

Are there no other decent long lens/scope alternatives to consider?

Celestron C6.

Actually, that's a fairly modest price. Although add in a appropriate tripod, and for astrophotography a tracking system, it still seems like a fairly low investment of a $1-2K for a nice image quality.

San Francisco camera store recommendation

You'll not find anything as large as Adorama/B&H in SF, but I can personally recommend Glass Key Photo in SF, and the Looking Glass, just outside of the city in Berkeley. These are independently run, small businesses that have given me fantastic service, with staff that have been a real pleasure to work with.

You're in for a real treat as the weather has been unusually warm and sunny. Enjoy your time in SF! :)

Sigma 50mm F/1.4 Art Image Quality comparisons posted at The Digital Picture

Bryan Carnathan's most excellent TDP website has posted a very nice head to head of IQ of the Sigma 50 Art against 7 similar focal length primes, including the Canon L, Canon 50 1.4 and the Zeiss Otus:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=9491

His IQ comparisons are fun if you haven't used them before. You mouseover the sample shot and the arrow indicator flips to show what image is being shown. You can change the aperture and see what changes, and he'll eventually even run the same test on crop body (note: he only has FF data on the new Sigma 50 right now).

By my eyes on these sample shots, the new Sigma Art thoroughly trounces the Canon 50L (as expected) and the Canon 50 F/1.4 (though it's pretty similar after F/4 or so). The Zeiss, to me, looks sharper wide open, esp. in the corners. Maybe that's what +$3k buys for you. :P

Of course, this is not the end-all be-all for a lens review. I'm sure Bryan will write quite an opus on this one in the next week or two.

But it's looking good. Have at it and see for yourself!

Tamron Makes the 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO Lens Official

About time that Tamron make and improve 17-300 mm Lens.
I have Tamron 28-300 mm. AF Aspherical LD ( IF) 1:3.5-6.3 MACRO, Made in Japan for 25-30 years (? ?), at the age of " Poor Surapon/ No money for Hobby, Just Money for Children".
But I still use this Great Lens from time to time.
Here are the Photos.
Enjoy.
Surapon

I hope the recently announced lens tamron 28-300mm, along with this one, has an acceptable level of IQ so, I can simplify somehow the number of lenses to carry during my holidays.
Nikon makes a fenomenal 28-300mm for FF at a cost around $800 and Canon has the monster EF 28-300mm L that cost $2,000+ so, the only hope Canon users in budget have is this Tamron.

Speedlite Tutorials?

She is adorable...very cute. Must got it from her mommy ;)

Well, I'm no expert in studio shooting. I REALLY like the 1st photo.

Thanks for sharing and the setup info

This image is taken at f/7.1, 1/200 of a second, an iso of 160, with my 100L. This might be a guess but I believe I had an A:B ratio of 8:1... though I'm not 100% sure it looks like it. I didn't have the 3rd Yongnuo at the time of the photo... I was using a crappy 90ex as a master and it did SUCH a great job I bought the Yongnuo immediately after the shoot. Yes... that was sarcasm... but I have good news... I sold that 90ex for 45 bucks and I lost only $5 for the chance to test it out.

I had one 580 exii to my left with a 43ish inch umbrella (soft white surface) and to my left I was reflecting my 2nd 580 exii off of a flash diffuser (because I am going to get another umbrella, stand, and mounting bracket... but i haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Note the softness of the background despite shooting at f/7.1. The background is just a sheet. It keeps me warm at night and provides a nice pale blue for backgrounds. I think we have other colors of sheets.
