What do you want to see in future firmware updates for the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1?

Every now and then I get an email about what someone would like to see in a firmware update. This gives some great insight on how different shooters use cameras and all the different scenarios that I would never run into.

What features would you like to see in future firmware updates for the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1?

I want to keep it to those cameras, as they're the latest and greatest and would likely have less technical limitations compared to the rest of the lineup.

We plan to do an article on the topic, which can lead to discussion that gets noticed by the powers that be.

Why doesn't anyone stock the Canon Drop-in CPL filter for Canon RF400mm f2.8 lens?

I want to buy "any brand" (unfortunately, Canon seems to be the only one that makes a CPL for this lens). I am thinking of getting this for wildlife photos during our upcoming Antarctica cruise as I expect a lot of reflections from the snow, water and ice.

Unfortunately, no one seems to have it. Have been searching for couple of months now. And many don't understand that a 52mm CPL cannot be simply screwed into the filter holder that comes with the lens. And Canon has made the matter really bad by having the drop-in filter on the EF-RF converter a different dimension!!! Why??? And for that converter, Canon and other brands like the Breakthrough make CPL filters, but that wouldn't work in my lens :mad::mad:

I am hoping that some reader knows where to get one. At the least, others who have this lens or are looking to buy one, know about this issue.

Canon today also announced the PowerShot Elph 360 HS A, which is just a re-release of the existing camera that was discontinued. The original release of the Powershot Elph 360 HS was January 5, 2016. The camera still sports DiGiC 4+ and shoots HD video. However, you aren’t limited to the cutthroat used market, where […]

Did Canon Miss the Boat on Flash Systems?

There were rumors several years back that Canon would replace the vintage 2004 ETTL-II flash system with something more advanced. After 2015, I think there have only been a handful of flash releases: the 470EX-AI, the 600EX II-RT, the EL-100, the EL-10, the EL-1 and EL-1v2, and the Macro Twin Lite MT-26EX-RT are the only ones I can think of. No new system has been forthcoming. An ideal time to deploy a new system might have been in the last few years when the number of R-series bodies was small and they could be easily adjusted with only a few firmware updates, but multiple R lines are now moving to second generation products.

So what do folks think about this, especially those who use multi-flash setups or do studio work? Did Canon miss a golden opportunity to introduce an improved flash system? Do folks find the current system adequate? Have many moved to other brands for a better flash system? Are there particular capabilities elsewhere that you wish Canon had?

Viltrox adds 2 new lenses, and Joins the L Alliance

Viltrox had a busy evening, launching two lenses and announcing that they have officially joined the L-Mount Alliance.

Viltrox has been a company to watch as they navigated, first introducing a decent series of primes for the APS-C mount that I enjoyed using, to now offering multiple lines of lenses for both full frame and APS-C, not to mention lenses with some serious speed and MTF claims. Again, all with exceptional prices.

R6 Mark III Rumors – Announcement Very Soon?

Some internet chatter has been circulating; it's a good idea to address it here. The rumors suggest that Canon will make a soft announcement sometime between now and September 15th. This would lead Canon to place the R6 Mark III in the announcement stream just before the IBC conference (International Broadcasting Convention), which usually covers cinema cameras more than stills.

Canon Still in Deep Research of Canon EF Cinema Lenses

This is a curious patent application from Canon. From the designs, it’s pretty evident that these aren’t your usual mirrorless zoom lenses.

A little background first on what we use to determine use cases for lenses. It’s all about the image height.
