There is talk of a Canon RF 20-50mm f/4-5.6 IS STM [CR1]

Here’s an interesting lens design, that would likely be quite compact. Perhaps a ‘pancake’ type zoom for the RF mount in the form of a Canon RF 20-50mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.
I think for such a lens to be desirable, it would definitely have to be extremely small, light and affordable.
More to come…

Canon RP question

Hello

Could someone answer my two questions about Canon RP?

Manual says that viewfinder and monitor can be set manually.
1. When viewfinder is set as default, when turning on the camera is monitor off, no blinking, turning on and off? Just off?
And if I don't look in the viewfinder when I turn the camera on, is viewfinder also off? Also no blinking on startup, just off?
Is it like this?

Manual also says that I can assign a button to toggle between viewfinder and monitor.
2. Does it mean it changes viewfinder / monitor right away with the press of that assigned button or it goes to settings where it can be changed?

And also if someone would be so kind and record one minute video of small things in a far background in 1080p 50 or 60 fps?
And hosting original file on google drive or any other place.

Thank You
Pawel

Rp is a bokeh killer

We all know, that EFCS ( Electronic first curtain shutter ) is great for reducing shutter shake, but affects bokeh at high shutter speeds.
Below is my example of how it looks like. Pretty big hit on bokeh. So You're getting roghly f2.0 blur out of f1.4 lens at 1/4000. And at iso 100 and f1.4 - most of daytime shots outside would require 1/3200-1/4000.
Even worse if you're lucky and have 1.2 lens - you'll be stuck with 1/4000

I admit - that is the price we pay for the luxury of EFCS, and mirrorles, but EVERY Full Frame mirrorless out there EXCEPT for Rp allows some form of workaround. For example - full electronic shutter does not affect bokeh in any way.
But the Rp only allows full e-shutter in scene modes + in focus stacking mode. So if you're shooting AV - there is no way to save your bokeh.

This is especially sad, because Canon has that great new RF glass with f1.2

Canon, plaease enable full electronic shutter in firmware update for Rp. We know it's technically there - just make it available in PASM modes.

I'm not asking for 1/8000. I know Rp is not a pro body by any means. And frankly 1/4000 is a huge limitation in using f1.2-f1.4 glass outdoors. But please allow 1/4000 with full electronic shutter.

Canon EOS R6 IBIS in action

I have now seen the video of the Canon EOS R6 IBIS in action, and it looks really smooth. The EOS R6 also appears to use the same type of grip as the Canon EOS RP.
Other things that I noticed from the video, the EOS R5 will be magnesium alloy, but the EOS R6 will not be. There is also no top-down LCD on the EOS R6, but there are multiple scroll wheels and I’m not sure what that’s about. The camera also has a much more rounded shape than the current EOS R cameras.
For the record, the source that sent us the image and video of the Canon EOS R6 has requested that it not be published, and we will always respect those requests. I usually see cameras well before they appear elsewhere and I want to have that continue, so I will not burn any bridges for some extra clicks.
The EOS R6 is real and has glorious IBIS, that’s really all we needed to know!

Poor AF performance on EOS R when recording with C-Log?

I decided to try out shooting video in C-Log with my EOS R last night. (Fully knowing the editing it requires in post.)

It seemed like the AF performance when shooting in C-Log was much worse than normal video shooting. Granted I was shooting in low-light conditions, but without C-Log the AF worked well. With it turned on, the AF seemed to hunt around much more, even at one point completely blowing the video out of focus and then hanging up with the lens completely de-focused. I was using single point AF.

I know there are a few features that are disabled when shooting in C-Log, but I didn't see that there was anything published that stated that AF performance takes a hit, or dual pixel AF is disabled or anything like that. (Does the EOS R have any form of autofocus other than dual pixel AF anyway?)

Canon's new AR headset - an indicator for future EVF advances?

I haven't seen this mentioned in this site yet, but apparently Canon has just revealed some info about an upcoming AR headset in development:

The noteworthy things to me are that

a) it uses global shutter CMOS sensors
b) Despite the predecessor being a niche product, Canon either sees enough potential or has sufficient interest in pursuing the technology to come out with this newer one

I'm wondering if the technology at play in a device like this could overlap sufficiently with upcoming EVF to help Canon offset some development costs that otherwise would have to be spread solely over the mirrorless cameras.

If the price is similar to the over 80k predecessor though, it might also be completely different tech, or it is entirely sourced from other manufacturers. I just found this interesting. Busy times for Canon.

Patent: Canon RF Mount Accessories

Keith over at Northlight-Images has uncovered a patent that showcases some of the capabilities of the RF mount as related to accessories such as extenders, converters and whatever else Canon can come up with.
As you may know, one of the biggest advancements in the RF mount over the EF mount is the high-speed communication capabilities, and it’s like we’ve only scratched the surface as to what is possible for the RF mount.

We have heard some rumblings that RF mount extenders are coming, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an EF  to RF teleconverter with a control ring for super-telephoto use.
I also believe some RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM photographers would like to see some RF mount teleconverters as well.
The image below will give you some idea of how things flow between the camera, accessory, and lens. (Click for larger)...

Here is the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Macro

Correction: This lens is actually the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Macro
Canon is getting set to announce a new kit lens for the RF mount, the RF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. This lens looks to be quite compact in length, which is because of the RF mount itself.
We expect an official announcement very shortly.

RF teleconverter and EF adapter madness?

The talk of imminent RF teleconverters being released got me thinking. Thinking of something stupid and probably not practical or optically possible, but thinking nonetheless...

What would happen if one were to put an RF teleconverter on an RF camera, put an RF to EF adapter on that, and then put an EF lens on that? Could I finally turn my EF 85mm f1.2 into the 119mm f1.7 lens I have always dreamed of? Or maybe a 170 f2.4? :geek:

What about turning a 24-70 f2.8 into a 33.6-98 f4?

Or, for the ultimate exercise in pointlessness, making an 11-24 f4 into a 22-48 f8?

These are the hard-hitting questions we need answers to as we wait for the R5 announcement.

The CFexpress card reader included with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III may be delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak

We have received a report out of Germany that the CFexpress card reader that is to be included with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is going to be delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The factory that makes the card reader is based in China and from this report, it has been closed down.
Canon will instruct purchasers of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III to register their cameras starting on February 14, 2020, to receive their card reader at a later date.
At this time we don’t know if this will be a global issue or not, as some card readers may have already left the factory.
We’ll update you once we know more.

Sigma and Tamron RF mount announcement?

Hi folks ! I just saw those two infos on another rumor site about Sigma and Tamron press conferences for the CP+ show in late february :

Do you think by chance they will announce the development of some of their mirrorless lenses for RF mount? I think it can be a possibility cause all they have to do is port what already exists and adapt the mount and the communication protocol.
Would be nice to have some alternative to the Canon lenses, wich are quite expensive despite their incredible quality.

Focus Mode 5D4

I am starting to dabble in video with my 5D4. The focus is wildlife. I use a Zacuto finder, therefore I cannot use the touchscreen to focus. I have the shutter button set up to focus and start recording. I have servo enabled. I am trying to decide which mode is best. I am using Flexizone single. Any tips or tricks you can suggest?

Thanks in advance

Introducing The [CR0], our first branded clothing product

I’ve always wanted to do some kind of swag over the years, but I never actually put it in motion. For 2020, I have decided that I will be releasing new clothing items with unique designs quarterly. I have a bunch of ideas that are unique from one another.
The first shirt is ‘The [CR0]’. This will be a one-time run, making it a limited edition. Once I have more items available, I will have a storefront, but this shirt will never appear there.
This is just another way for readers and our community to support this site.
The shirts and hoodie feature the oft-requested Canon RF 10-1000mm f/1.0L IS USM 1.4x – 2.0x. Canon decided that the EF version was a no go and switched development over to the RF mount.
Check out The [CR0] at our Bonfire Store

Does your 24mm pancake lens back focus?

I'm notoriously picky about autofocus accuracy. All my lenses have been AFMA'd with the bodies that allow that. But the 77D that I use for travel photography doesn't offer AFMA.

I bought a 24mm pancake when they first came out and really liked it. I even did a little macro photography with it on the 77D that turned out well a couple of years ago.

A few months ago, I tried some mild macro photography with the 24 Pancake on the 77D and found that it had enough back focus to make it useless for macro work. Shortly after that I bought a 90D and a new copy of the 24 pancake lens, thinking that the old lens might have been damaged internally. (There was no external damage and I don't think I ever dropped it.)

Oddly enough, the new 24 pancake back focused the same amount as the old one. I mounted it on my new 90D and discovered that it needed -3 on the microfocus adjustment scale. But I really want to use it on the 77D which has no adjustment! It focuses well with other lenses - just retested with the 40 pancake and the nifty fifty, it hits the mark perfectly.

So I'm asking if any of you have checked the focus on your 24 pancakes? What did you find?

Wasabi batteries in EOS R?

Going hiking and looking for some extra batteries. Anyone used Wasabi batteries in their R? How about the Wasabi dual charger that runs off a USB charger or power pack?
I've always used genuine Canon batteries, but these are under half price and rated at a greater capacity and the charger looks useful.
This 2017 thread had positive comments about Wasabi in other Canon cameras:

Thanks

A high-megapixel EOS R camera is still on the roadmap [CR2]

While a lot of us, myself included expected to see a high-megapixel R replacement for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R DSLRs to be coming next, that has turned out not to be the case. As we’re going to get the 45mp Canon EOS R5 next and then a Canon EOS R6 later on in the spring. We have no details on the announcement timeframe for another EOS R series camera. We were told that 4 new full-frame cameras were coming in 2020, so this may be one of them.

The source claims that the megapixel jump from the 50.6mp sensor in the EOS 5DS series will be “significant”. We’ve had rumors stating 70+ megapixels, but I get the feeling it could be much higher. Unfortunately, most everything rumored about this camera previously has proven incorrect. I would think if...

Printing from a Canon 5Dmk4 via USB advice ?

HI there , been searching for a definitive answer on this and cannot seem to find one, been offered a Canon BJC85 old portable printer with inks for a low price but cannot work out if it will directly connect to the 5dMk4 or if it would need to go via a laptop first , its fairly old so I am concerned the direct usb route may not work but unsure - anyone used direct USB to the 5dmk4 from their printers ?

Sorry if this is in wrong category could not see one for printing.

Cheers
Andrew

EOS MF - Would Canon ever try the Medium Format Digital Market?

ON another thread about Canon financials forecasts, discussions about higher and higher MP sensors came about, and it occurred to me...if we're talking going well over 50MP, would canon at some point maybe try to quit trying to squeeze too many more pixels in a FF sensor, for all the technical challenges that might open up, and possibly entertain the idea of a new EOS (or other name) line of Medium Format cameras?

They did mention they seem to be going for the upper level market somewhat, and with cameras on the market like the GFX100 and the Hasselblad X1D II 50C and such, do you think Canon would ever dip its toe into the larger sensor with higher MP market?

Granted, it would be a smaller market than FF, but we are seeing other companies like Fuji doing some interesting and well received MF type cameras....do you think Canon might be looking that way in the future too?

I just thought it might be a fun topic to throw around...

Lenses and Cooking Grease

This may be a stupid question but I'm always paranoid about damaging my equipment so this has me worrying...

So yesterday on an assignment for work, I was photographing people cooking chicken wings. My cameras now have a slight oily feel and the rubber reeks of cooking grease. This is all just from being in the room where the food was being cooked.

My question -- is it likely the cooking grease from the air got inside the body and lenses? I'm now worrying that there is an oil buildup inside the lenses from being in this environment yesterday. I was using 1DX II + 70-200 2.8 III and 1DX + 16-35 2.8 III, both lenses with filters, if that even makes a difference.
