Tweaking Canon 80D audio

Hello,
I record concert band concerts with the 80D with a Tascam recorder attached on a hotshoe. I want to ensure the Tascam records better audio than the 80D, but the 80D does have pretty good audio. Therefore, I am interested in tweaking the audio settings on the 80D to ensure the audio from the recorder is more of the “reference quality” and is far better than the 80D’s audio. If anyone has any setting or tweaking tips that would be appreciated. Thanks!
Dan

Canon will release the EOS Ra astrophotography camera

Back in June, we reported about the possibility of a dedicated astrophotography EOS R system camera coming from Canon in late 2019.  It turns out such a camera may, in fact, be coming in 2020.
According to the source, they were told that a “Canon EOS Ra” has appeared on an internal Canon roadmap for 2020. The only time the “a” is used in Canon ILC camera models has been for the EOS 20Da and the EOS 60Da, which leads us to believe we will definitely be seeing a dedicated astrophotography camera.
No specifications are known at this time, as only the model name has appeared on the internal document. There is however a chance that the model name is an internal codename for a different camera.
Update: Canon themselves have mentioned the Canon EOS Ra in an EOS R leaflet on one of their official sites. You can download the leaflet...

Stolen gear, now what?

I've been shooting photos using Canon DSLRs since the EOS 350d era.
Last year I jumped from the 700d to the 6D mkII + Tamron 24 70 G2 and was very happy with it. My only complaint was the focus points that were crammed to the center of the frame plus the AFMA I had to perform to my lenses to get the best out of them. Still I had a considerable miss rate on action shots, but it was acceptable. Sadly camera and lens were stolen a month ago and now I'm trying to see what I should do.

I thought of switching to another brand, so I tested Fuji and Sony. Fuji is a no no for me since I don't like the button placing. Especially the shutter button on XT-30 and XT-3 being on top.. what were they thinking? Anyways, Sony has nice ergonomics but if I switch to it, I'll have to get rid of all my lenses and buy Sony equivalents. I don't think I can justify that.

My current lens lineup is: EFS 17-55, EF 16-35 f4L IS, Tamron 35 1.8 VC, Canon 70-200 2.8 I, Canon 70-300L IS which cover most of my needs (travel/candid shots - car racing - concerts).

What would you suggest me doing? One option would be getting the 6d mkII again, but I'm trying to explore other possibilities like: Get an M6 mkII with viewfinder+EF adapter to use for sports and some kind of EOS R later (mid-2020) to utilize my FF lenses to the max. Does this make sense? What would you do if you were in my place?

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is coming in 2020

We’ve confirmed from a very solid source one of the worst kept secrets for 2020, that Canon will announce the EOS-1D X Mark III. The same source gave us a few tidbits of information about what could possibly be coming in the new flagship DSLR.

It’s likely the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will shoot 6K video without a crop.
Dual CFExpress cards are in the prototype models and will likely make it to the production version.
There will be a “significant jump in resolution for an EOS-1 series camera”.  The EOS-1D X was 18.1mp and the EOS-1D X Mark II came in at 20.2mp. So I guess anything over a 2mp bump could be considered “significant” to some.
New DIGIC processor. Canon doesn’t usually introduce a new DIGIC processor in the EOS-1D series, but that will apparently change this time.
IBIS is in prototype cameras

We weren’t given an idea on when we could expect an announcement, but we’ll update you as soon as someone sheds some light on that.

Canon EOS R “One YEAR Later” REVIEW…does it hold up?

Jared Polin gives his thoughts on the Canon EOS R a year later and Canon’s full-frame mirrorless future.
On September 26, 2019, Canon will be releasing the new v1.4.0 firmware for the EOS R, which should add some goodies for a lot of shooters. I think the EOS R was a good first step, but I agree with Jared, they need to do more with the bodies to close the perceived gap with Sony.
2020 will be a huge year, so sit tight Canon shooters.

I hate the surface finish on the RF bodies and lenses

Does anyone else really dislike the matte look/feel of the RF bodies and lenses? I feel like it is going to wear really poorly and show a lot of wear in just a few years. The battery door on my R has already been rubbed to the point of being shiny, although that is where a strap rubs on it when I carry it. But the edges of the top of the viewfinder housing are also already getting shiny. I normally carry my camera hanging by my side, and it rubs on my pants leg, and I worry the matte finish on my RF 50mm 1.2 is going to be shiny before too long. It's really going to make equipment look worn and junky in a very short time. I don't personally care, but I know resale value is going to tank if my equipment looks visibly worn when I go to sell it. I'd much rather have a smoother finish on the bodies and lenses, even if it doesn't feel quite as premium when they're new.

Leslie Mark II

All shot on the EOS R and RF 85mm f/1.2L. NO skin smoothing or anything. She's just 13 and applies her own makup better than some of the pro MUA I have encountered. She's been is a few little know movies and a couple of TV commercials and music videos. Who knows, my photos may be worth something one day. Her manager mother trusts me to take most of her photos.

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM

Post your pics taken with this wonderful compact wide-angle prime.

I just picked up my new EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. Couldn't belive there wasn't a gallery thread yet after years for this small gem.

Here is one of my first pictures taken with it, 5D3, EF 28/2.8, 1/200, f/11, ISO 400, AF focus set right on the spider web Distance less than 1 m.
Almost no PP. Just DPP lens correction.

Autofocus on canon 5d mark iii In the Corners Of the screen

My knowledge In the Automatic Focus on my Camera is basic,However I have a specific Question,
On the AF point There is many various Ways To adjust it Like Single point Or a group point, As well as many ways To track Subject, However None of this is my question,
My question is that the AF points Given to me Only in the center of the screen,
I solve that problem In a deep research I did In the past And I cannot find That answer Again,
So the question is I want to focus On the Far upper Center or corner, Also Side Ways Right or left Corner And not only in the center of the Screen,
answer will be appreciated

RF 24-240mm: No full frame cover at 24mm

Chris Frost has posted a review of that lens and it appears as if Canon made some interesting compromises in order to allow it to hit the price, weight and size point they amed for. Namely, at the wide end, it doesn't really cover the whole frame. That shocked me, to be honest. Is it something they have done before, maybe on an EF-M lens? Or is this a first?

I'm not really interested in the lens, even if I would get a R camera in the future. But it seems odd to me that are doing this. Seems like a cheap trick a third party manufacturer would pull. Seems like we could also see some really low cost RF lenses if this design mentality is carried over to less extreme designs, like a pancake lens.

EOS R: Quirks and Quibbles

Point of this thread intended for EOS R OWNERS is not to complain about the camera, but to discuss challenges and work arounds.

I received mine a few days ago, and I've identified a few issues that don't seem learning-curve related. Here are two:

1) There is currently no third-party eyecup for the EVF, such as the Hoodman Hoodeye line of eyecups that works so great for dSLR's. I like to shoot in early morning and late afternoon, but the angle of the sun at these times (after and before golden hour) makes seeing through the EVF very difficult for me. The Nikon Z's already have an eyecup, and I've written to Hoodman to ask if one might be coming for the EOS R (which, by the way, has its eyecup screwed on, but otherwise comes off without much effort.)

Anybody have some kind of DIY solution yet?

2) Not a big deal, but the Auto Sensor Cleaning, unless completely disabled, engages every time the display goes to sleep--which is a LOT! The only setting that stops that is just turning "Auto" off altogether. Sure, I might be able to just remember to engage it when I swap lenses, but it is definitely a quirk.

There's more, but I don't want to start with a long laundry list, and, frankly, this camera is new to me and many issues will likely resolve themselves.

I am seeing the potential of the R's AF, and getting very good initial results with it--especially considering I've been shooting at f/1.2 and relatively low shutter speeds with a non-IS lens! But the EVF is a huge change for me.

Please, fellow EOS R OWNERS, chime in and share some of the quirks and quibbles you are dealing with and learning to work with.

Thanks!

Patent: Here is Canon’s IBIS unit

It’s no surprise anymore that IBIS is coming to future EOS R cameras, and possibly a Canon DSLR. This patent is an extremely detailed view of Canon’s IBIS unit. It looks like the technology is ready to go.
Canon News breaks down this particular patent:
They are looking to create high efficiency in the movement force, and to improve the linearity of the magnetic circuit for position detection.  Both of which are important to moving a large full-frame sensor quickly and with a high degree of accuracy.
Below is an exploded view of the IBIS unit found in Japan Patent Application 2019-152785...

EOS 90D - Hands on review

The 90D arrived a little late this afternoon so had time for just a few measurements. It is not very substantial and won't be useful for driving in tent pegs, but it is light. It does provide a good grip for holding telephoto lenses. The download cable is a micro USB and Canon is so mean that it doesn't include one in the box. FoCal isn't ready for for AFMA when tethered to the computer but it does do AFMA on downloaded jpegs. So, I calibrated it it with a 100-400mm II and a 400mm DO II and again with 1.4xTCs. The preliminary data on charts are good. It is outresolving the same lenses on a 5DSR and gives very nice jpegs OOC. More tomorrow.

Canon EOS M200 coming soon

As previously reported, Canon will announce a replacement to the entry-level EOS M100 soon according to Nokishita.
No specifications have leaked out for the little EOS M camera, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it keep the same 24mp image sensor as the EOS M50, with the EOS M50 replacement getting the new 32.5mp image sensor that recently appeared in the new EOS M6 Mark II and EOS 90D. Here’s hoping we do get surprised and Canon brings the new sensor to the entry-level EOS M camera.
