Mirrorless viewfinders and wildlife photography

As an owner of an overworked 5d Mk III, I recently bought an R to replace it. Whilst it is an excellent camera in many ways, I was quite aware of its deficiencies in terms of wildlife photography which I do a bit of. I have found the R is excellent for macro photography and as well as other non-action based photography. I love the articulating screen for more interesting shots in particular. As others have reported the camera is poor at tracking objects and I also found accurate and repeatable focusing of small birds and animals at a distance less than optimal - both slow and front/back focussing quite often. It seems that the new firmware due towards the end of September is going to be addressing exactly these auto-focus issues so my findings don't seem out of line and I look forward to these improvements.

However one area I find more frustrating than any other for wildlife photography with the R is the viewfinder. With the EVF it seems that if your focus is off by just a little bit when you point your camera at your target it is often impossible to make out your target against the background. With my 5D and its OVF, as long as the focussing wasn't miles off I could generally pick out the bird or animal even though it was blurry. Now perhaps with the new firmware and hopefully snappier focussing then perhaps that will help but I don't think it will really address this fundamental deficiency. Have any other R users found this too and have you found any techniques that can help?

The rumoured pro-mirrorless for next year I'm sure will be a step or two ahead again on auto-focus and tracking compared to the R but unless it has one of those combined OVF/EVF viewfinders that were shown in patents a while back then it may still not meet my wildlife needs.

I am therefore seriously thinking of picking up a 90D for my wildlife photography with my R for the remainder. Are there any R owners with 80D/7D mkII cameras filling the wildlife role and if so, how is that working for you? Any more related thoughts?

Don’t trust your R in the rain :o|

Hi guys!

I’m a sad panda now...

Was out in a light drizzle today. I had my arm covering the camera most of the time and wiping it off. I know it’s nowhere near the level of weather sealing the 1dx2 has, but it was such a light rain I figured it would be a non issue , it wasn’t ... Drying it off in rice now, after drying it a bit with a hairdryer hopefully it’s not a write off, but I’m not that hopeful...

*edit* read that it should be in a sealed plastic bag, so did that after these shots.

GLITCHY VIDEO FROM CANON 6DII

I'm attaching a screengrab from a video I was shooting at a party. Every now and then I would get glitches like this. Its never happened before but it happened a few times during the night. Was using a YN50 1.4 because it was in low light. Card used was sandisk extreme plus 90mb/sec. The card is only a few months old and never given problems before.

Video settings were FHD 25.00P

would love to hear feedback or suggestions so it doesn't happen again. Thanks.

p.s the white box over the mans face is just for privacy and not part of the video.

First impressions of the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM

My preordered RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM arrived today. It did not work at all on my EOS RP until I updated the camera firmware. Once updated, it worked nicely. I find the size, weight, and balance to be a good fit for the EOS RP. Zoom action is smooth and requires similar effort throughout the range. No lens creep with the camera pointed up with the lens extended or pointed down and retracted. Focusing was fast and accurate in both one shot and servo. I will mainly use this combo for travel and static/slow subjects, but I did test for birds in flight. I had no problem picking up and tracking gulls and waterfowl against the sky with almost all photos in focus. My impression was that servo tracking was much better with this lens than when I tried the RP with similar subjects and adapted EF lenses. It will take some time for me to have an opinion on image quality, but the zoom range is impressive (example attached). test 1 comp L (sm).jpg

EF14mm F2L probability?

Hi guys, I've been waiting for an EF14mm F2L since it was rumored back in April 2018. Since then the R mount has been released. Do you think this means that any release of an awesome Astro lens would only be in an "R" mount? I have a 1DX II but just want a superb extra-wide angle Astro-photography lens.

Do you have any thoughts?

Mike.

Canon 5D mark IV. Internal microphone problem?

Hello. Yesterday I went to a concert and did some video records. I've record sound on internal microphone. And everything was fine until one moment. At the half of one song sound went bad.
I've uploaded the part of the video here (bad sound from 23 second) : https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ji81z_jIMTGjJY_HMpvxpLn_barP0ohR
And I think the sound became worse than before, some kind of flat..
Camera settings is defaults.
Any ideas?

Help please: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X for video editing

Looking for feedback on a new computer build. I was getting by for photo editing but now wish to get into video. I'd like something that will be acceptable for editing the 4K60 from my 1DX2. For now at least I'll be using Vegas Movie Studio 16.

My budget is self imposed at around the $1500 USD unless there is a compelling reason for going higher. I've been putting in the hours reading and trying to come up to speed and think I'm close. I have one 4TB HDD and a 1TB SSD for starters. Any comments/advice on my tentative choice of the following and suggestions regarding other components, would be much appreciated.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X ASUS Prime X570 P Gforce RTX 2060 Black SN750 NVMe SSD 500 GB 64GB of ?? RAM

What’s next from Canon?

Now that the announcements for the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II are done, what can we expect next from Canon?
Canon Cinema C500 Mark II (Pictured above)

This cinema camera will be announced on or around September 5, 2019, ahead of IBC in Amsterdam. Here are some of the rumored specifications.

Canon EOS M100 Mark II

We think an update to the entry-level Canon EOS M100 will come before the end of 2019.

Canon EOS Rebel T8I:

We’ve heard rumblings about a new Rebel, and it wouldn’t shock me to see it announced alongside the EOS M100 replacement.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

This should be officially announced in November, and begin shipping in December at a cost of around $2500.

Canon EOS RS (High-resolution EOS R camera)

Before we get the truly professional EOS R series camera, we’ll likely see the announcement of a high-resolution EOS R camera, we...

Industry News: Nikon to make a D6 announcement on September 4, 2019

It looks like Nikon is gearing up to make some kind of announcement about the coming D6, their flagship DSLR and the direct competitor to the EOS-1D X series.
The latest Nikon D6 specifications from Nikon Rumors:

Adding sensor stabilization delayed the D6 announcement
The D6 will definitely not be a “hybrid” camera, but rather a DSLR with some mirrorless features (better video, IBIS for example)
Dual CFExpress memory card slots
.76-78x 100% viewfinder
New Expeed dual processors
Better/improved AF than the current D5
Built-in Wi-Fi
3.2 million dot touch screen, with full touch capabilities
Excellent/improved silent shooting modes

Canon and Nikon tend to announce their flagship cameras around the same time. The Nikon D5 was announced on January 6, 2016, while the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II was announced February 1st, 2016.

EOS M6 Mark II and 90D Show Excellent Sensor Performance

I have downloaded nearly all the CR3 raw files for the 90D and M6 Mark II that I could find and I'm decidedly impressed. The sensor performance is truly excellent all the way up to 6400 ISO...and at that sensitivity, the raw files are really showing a lot of detail and controlled noise performance. What's most impressive with this new sensor is it's dynamic range - that is to say that is seems to have a LOT of it. I am really excited to get mine now because there really does appear to be at least a full stop or more of information. Skies in harsh mod day light are fully exposed and recoverable. Exposure can be manipulated with good results as well. Zero banding when absolutely crushing a raw file with boosted shadows.

I want to see how this camera performs when shooting underexposed by a few stops. When shot with proper exposure, there is a lot of information to play with and it gives me good hope that were seeing the gap truly closed with this new generation of sensor.

Wireless RAW transfer, while writing to the internal SD card - not perfect - but, close.

So Canon finally listened to my moaning. I've called twice to mention that this feature is 'broken' in the image transfer utility.

But, with 'Image Transfer Utility 2', you can now wirelessly backup your RAW files, while writing to the internal card.

There is only one caveat. Canon seems to insist on saving batteries, so the image transfer is only initiated after you turn your camera on, or after it comes back from being asleep. Not a big problem, but when I have time, I'll probably call and make a 'feature request' to allow continuous backup.

I've tested this thoroughly on my Mac and it's pretty fantastic. Here's how it works; First, you link your camera to the computer and tell it to take your RAW files as backups and to always look for new files on your SD. Then you shoot. After you turn your camera off and back on, or after it goes asleep and you wake it up, your camera and Mac will start to sync any new RAW files to the folder you specified on your computer. You can shoot away during this process. I haven't noticed any slowdown at all in frame rate, or buffer clearing. Any files you capture while the sync is in process will be transferred to your computer. After the sync stops, any new RAW files will not transfer until you turn on/off, or sleep/wake your camera. But, other than worrying that I'm going to wear out my on/off dial, this has not been a problem.

For wedding shooters, having a computer may not be convenient, so I suggest you call Canon and impress upon them the importance of allowing this to work on your IOS/Android. But, for studio shooters like me, this is pretty fantastic.

You can also setup Lightroom and Capture One to read the backup folder as a hot folder and use this for wireless 'tethering'.

RAW transfer is not as fast as I'd like. With the wifi utility, it takes about 4 seconds a RAW file. With this utility, it takes about double, maybe a bit longer, but it's been completely stable for me, even over multiple days, without ever needing to reconnect.

It's a major step in the right direction and gives me huge hope. If they could do this to an iPad Pro, or a other smaller device, it would be perfect.

I image some others will like this as much as I do. For those of you who would benefit from improved functionality, please call canon and ask to make a feature request. I do it through my CPS phone contacts, but I would imagine any Canon customer service representative could do this for you as well.

Canon may be getting a lot of flack, but, behind the scenes, they're really stepping up their game. If they get this working on small devices, without major battery draw, and without needed an on/off, or sleep/wake cycle, The argument for the 2nd card slot - on most cameras - is gone...

protect images by accident?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but every time I go to clear a memory card and try to delete all my images, there are always a handful of images that are protected. I'm assuming while I'm shooting my hands/face must accidentally be triggering the file protection, but I've been unable to replicate it deliberately and I'd love to disable this if at all possible. Anyone know how to protect images on the fly on the EOS R so I can avoid it?

Why has Canon omitted 24p 4K recording in their new cameras such as the EOS M6 Mark II, EOS 90D and EOS RP?

It’s easy to jump on a company or a product for features that it doesn’t have, and on the internet, the negative a lot of the time has a louder voice than the positives.
Since the Canon EOS RP which doesn’t have 24p in Full HD record, but does in 4K without DPAF, PowerShot G7 X Mark III and PowerShot G5 X Mark II launched without 4K and/or 1080 recording in 24p, a lot of Canon users have been very vocal in their disapproval of the decisions along with asking why on earth the feature doesn’t appear in their new cameras.
Now that the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II have launched without 4K in 24p, it seems to be a new trend for Canon to omit this recording capability.
The question is why?

I posted a silly poll on Twitter last night asking why you think Canon has started to omit the ability and joke’s aside...

Our favourite hands-on preview of the Canon EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II

I have watched a ton of hands-on previews for both the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II, and instead of posting them all, I’ll just post my favourite one and as it happens a lot recently, Jared Polin (FroKnowsPhoto) does a great one and I agree with a lot of what he says about both cameras.
The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is quite a compelling package, while the Canon EOS 90D seems to only have advantages in buffer performance and ergonomics.
Jared also provides RAW files that you can open in Lightroom for the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II here.
