Patent: Tiny Canon 100-400mm lens and camera

Canon continues further development of its miniature lenses for what appears to be smartphone applications.
This is a patent (USPTO) for the Canon 100-400mm camera/lens that can fit in the palm of a child’s hand.
This patent explains more about the camera, along with lenses that will mount to it. In theory, Canon could develop a range of different focal lengths that will attach to the camera unit.
Could this be the birth of a tiny new camera and lens system? I don’t know, but it’s definitely an interesting concept that appears to be deep into development.

Is SIGMA getting ready to announce their first RF mount lenses? [CR1]

In the next few weeks, SIGMA is rumoured to be announcing 4 new lenses for the Sony FE mount as well as their shared L mount with Panasonic and Leica.

SIGMA 35mm f/1.2 DG HSM
SIGMA 45mm f/2.8 DG HSM
SIGMA 12-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM
SIGMA 24-70mm f/2.8 DG HSM

It’s now rumoured that SIGMA will also make these lenses for Canon’s RF mount. It’s unknown if they will be announced alongside their Sony counterparts.
It’d be a good move for SIGMA to get in early on making lenses for the RF mount, as Canon’s RF lens lineup obviously needs some time to mature.

Yesterday I was able to shoot a total solar Eclipse in Argentina. A marvel. The second photo is a montage of two images of the exact moment of the total eclipse.

Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II information [CR1]

There seems to be a lot more talk about coming Cinema EOS products, so I think we’re going to see a major camera announcement sometime in the next couple of months.
We’ve been told the following about the rumoured Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.

First the obvious, the EOS C500 Mark II will sit between the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C700.
The Cinema EOS C500 Mark II will be full-frame with the ability to do internal RAW recording.
The camera will be somewhat modular, you’ll be able to build the base for your specific needs.
You will be able to switch between PL and EF mounts yourself.
The camera will be approved for Netflix productions

It’s rumoured that the C500 Mark II was shown to specific dealers at NAB last April and should come  before the end of 2019.

The rumored "head scratcher" Eos R Camera - arguments for a high mp model.

About one month ago it was rumored that we can expect a new full frame camera from the eos r line, and that it will be a "head scratcher".

Much discussion was had about what it could possibly be, and many beleved it may be an astro model. I dont think that will be the case.
Canon always have only a few types of sensors in their most current camera lineup. For eg at the moment:
26mp sensor for their budged ff, 30mp sensor for the 5d/eos r, the 20 mp for idx ii and 50mp for the 5ds/r

I dont beleve they will develop an extra sensor just for astro photograpgy. But as we know, most of canons ff camera lines arent soon due for an update, except
the idx and 5ds/r line. Camera development includes sensor development, which means that probably only the new idx and new 5ds/r sensor is far in its development.
This would mean that this possible astro camera would either use one of those two new sensors, or reycle an old one. which is all equaly unlikely.

As the 5ds/r is probably due for an update, if we asume a 5 year cicle, it could be the rumored camera for late 2019. The headscratcher would be the high mp count.

As the 5ds/r sensor is basicaly a scaled up version of the 70d sensor, and there was a 2 year gap between the 70d and the 5ds/r, it could also mean that we wont see
a eos r high mp model until 2021, if we asume a 90d release in august this year.

Does a firmware update require len/camera to be AF microadjusted again

I have been doing AF microadjusting with both my Canon 5D Mark IV and 1DX II for quite some time. I even share an article with my clients about it. One client asked me today if upgrading the Firmware requires AF microadjusting again. I suspect it does, but not completely sure. Can any of you shed some light or experience on AF microadjusting and firmware upgrades? Thanks a bunch. I did not find much on the web so far, so if you have a link, please share it.

Here is my article on how I do it and my sharpness has been the best ever. These calliope hummers were done with a Canon 1DX Mark II and a Canon 600mm III with 1.4x.

Australian wildlife

I couldn't find a thread focusing specifically on the unique animals found in Australia so here we go. Wild or captive is fine(if captive it would be good to be aknowledged). I'll start with a couple taken recently at a sanctuary called 'Tasmanian devil Unzoo'. It has some animals that are retirees from the Devil breeding program(which is designed to build up a population free from the deadly facial tumor disease) and its philosophy is to have as little in the way of enclosures or barriers as possible. A great philosophy and a great place.FB_IMG_1561965222013.jpgFB_IMG_1561965228939.jpgIMG_20190701_172133_299.jpg

Canon RF 85 f1.2 L first impressions

I got the RF 85 f1.2 L two days ago, and have been trying it out on the streets.

I have compared it to the EF 85LII and the EF 85 f1.8. I don't post any comparison pictures here, but long story short, it is much better in every measurable way other than size and weight.

1. It is huge! It makes the EF 85 LII look quite small and cute. Fortunately, it doesn't feel too bad an unbalanced on the EOS R, but it feels more front heavy than the 85LII does on the 5DIV.

2. AF is fast and accurate. It isn't as fast from close to infinity as a 24-70 f2.8LII, but still very good. I'd say going from close focus to infinity and achieving focus takes less than a second. With shorter focus pulls it is much quicker.

3. It is super sharp from edge to edge wide open. Look at the brick wall picture that is attached. It is at least as sharp as the RF50L, probably sharper (if that is possible).

4. It has no chromatic aberrations. The picture from inside the train station, with the window posts, is a torture test. The Zeiss 100mm f2 macro planar shows chromatic aberration in this scene. The RF 85Lf1.2 has none, even at f1.2.

5. If it has any distortion, I am unable to see it. I refer to the brick wall picture, and the picture from inside the train station.

6. Bokeh is very pleasing. When I compared it to the EF85LII, I found the RF85L to have softer and smother bokeh at "normal" shooting distances, from close focus to maybe 4 meters away. When focusing at approximately 60 meters though (the scene from within the train station), the EF85LII has a noticeably smoother background - f2 was smoother than the RF at 1.2. (I haven't done any comparisons between the two between 4 and 60 meters focus distance.) Personally I would prioritize the lens that has the smoothest bokeh at shorter focusing distances (the RF).

7. It vignettes at f1.2, but its vignetting doesn't bother me. The vignette has a very smooth transition to it. You can judge for yourselves, especially from the brick wall picture.

The pictures are all shot handheld. The brick wall test is shot at 1/250 sec and could be affected by camera shake. The other images are shot with 1/800 sec and faster.

A Canon RF 16-28mm f/2L USM is coming [CR1]

A couple of days ago we reported that Canon was hard at work on a second f/2 zoom, with a suggestion that we’d see a “holy trinity” of f/2L zoom lenses from Canon.
We’ve been told that the next f/2 zoom from Canon will be an RF 16-28mm f/2L USM, which will fit nicely with the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM. None of the f/2 zoom lenses will get image stabilization, but don’t fret, all future EOS R bodies will have in-body image stabilization.
We have no word on what the telephoto f/2 zoom will be to complete the holy trinity of f/2 zooms.
More to come…

Canon patent shows new tilt mechanism and working process

A new patent shows a lens design with powered tilt and focus (along with sensors to feed back position info. Delve further and there are flowcharts showing how the tilted plane of focus can be matched to a subject surface.

Interesting info since I know from my teaching work that positioning the plane of focus along an arbitrary plane is something more photographers don't grasp with TS-E lenses the any other aspect.

New 70-200 lens

I just got myself a new 70-200 F4 IS II.
I've used the 2.8 versions, but found them to be too big and heavy to use all day, so I bought myself an F4.
As light and easy to use as my 24-105, and as I rarely need F2.8, I went for this.
Got it cheap too.

Here's a few shots I took yesterday. IT has great bokeh. Of course, I had to get some shots of my cats.
What else do you test out a lens with?

Taken with 5D3 and mostly wide open.
