Sony announce a range of global shutter sensors

The largest is 31MP APS-C with maximum readout of 12fps at 12-bit - how that will relate to a real-world stills-oriented hybrid camera (acutal fps, dynamic range, monochrome vs colour etc) we shall have to see but this seems to be a significant step forward

Functionality being added to the Canon EOS R soon after release with firmware update

It may have been lost during the announcement excitement, but Canon will be adding some functionality to the Canon EOS R camera with a firmware update. Expect to see the firmware update released within a couple of months after shipping begins in October.
What’s coming in the firmware?

Eye detect AF in continuous shooting. The EOS R launches with the ability to do this in one shot.
Additional touch bar functionality added.
Continuous shooting in silent shutter mode. The EOS R only allows this feature in single shot at launch.
A “few tweaks” to video functionality. The 4K crop will not be changed, nor will the maximum frame rate in 4K.
Bug fixes

As we learn more about the coming firmware update(s), we’ll let you know. We expect to see a lot of functionality added to the camera over the next year as we have new ergonomics at play with the control ring and the touch bar.

Come play with the Canon EOS R RAW files

Jared Polin from FroKnowsPhoto has converted 8 CR3 RAW files to DNG for you to play with. Currently, no Adobe products support the RAW from the Canon EOS R, but that will obviously change closer to the ship date next month.
The RAW files are split between two zip files for you to download.
EOS R RAW 1
EOS R RAW 2
The Canon EOS R uses the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV sensor, but there are likely some tweaks as well as the new DIGIC 8 processor factoring in on any improvements we may see.

So whats a 1DR going to be like

So we now have the 5DR.
It seems a capable camera but its Canon's first real attempt at Full Frame Mirrorless.
Within the next few years it has to produce a 1DR top of the range professional mirrorless.
Besides being built like a brick its got to be top of its class as it will reign for a number of years.
Its got to appeal to Sports photography agencies.
What will the 1DR bring.
Will it reach 20FPS AI Servo
How many MP's to allow 20FPS or beyond to occur.
Could it dissipate the heat for uncropped 4K
Would it have IBIS.
I assume dual cards and silent shutter (usuable for fast moving objects)
Eye focus or some sort of advanced tracking of things like birds.
What would wow you to make it the ultimate mirrorless camera by the time it comes out.

What else is coming from Canon?

Canon Under Wrap

Used cell phone to create a partial screenshot from a paused TV screen during the U.S. Open this evening. Cameras were turned to the press box when the commentators were saying Nishikori could not go anywhere without cameras being everywhere he went. Reminded me of how auto manufactures try to disguise a vehicle in public before its officially released.

The photographer has a DSLR in his lap which the wrapped camera is resting.

There is enough wrap covering the base of the lens to be covering an adapter.

If this thread needs to be moved please move.

Discount dates differ for Canon Store vs B&H Photo

I was looking at the $500 discount on the Eos-1DX Mark II today. On the B&H Photo website the discount is valid only until September 8. On the US Canon website the discount is available until September 22.

Two questions:
1. I have regularly followed the discounting from Canon. For this $500 discount which has been going on since at least end of 2017, the discount period has always been a full month. Does ending the discount on September 22 mean something? It's right before Photokina.

2. I have never seen a discrepancy on the discount expiry date between B&H and Canon. This time there is a major discrepancy. Does this mean anything?

EF-EOS R Adapters... Accurate Pricing?

Is this pricing accurate from B&H for the EF>R lens adapters? The control ring version is the cheapest, but the plain "dumb" adapter is the most expensive?

Can I use Sigma & Tamron lens on EOS R?

Hi guys,

currently i am on Canon 6D MI and seriously going in with EOS R, however my current lens set up is Tamron & Sigma lens. (Full Frame lens)
does anyone know if i can port them over onto EOS R?
will there be auto focus lens / lag time?

is there any photographer / reviewers that have tried out third party lens on EOS R?
any pics to share / or thoughts?

thanks!

The second EOS R body

A while back we heard there would be 2 mirrorless bodies, released by I think halfway through 2019. I recall one being a 30 mp body and the second a lower resolution one. The first part of that post by CR Guy has borne out. I sure hope the second camera is a higher, not lower res body. Just wondering if there is any further info on this? That source seemed to know what they were talking about....

Mirrorless......single frame silent mode????

Ok so Ive waited for a Canon Mirrorless camera all this time, In the meantime using the Fuji system, which is ok, but not full frame.
With my Eos lenses gathering dust!

Along comes this all singing all dancing Canon R........wait a minute the most important feature of a silent camera...." Single Frame, silent mode??? Are you kidding me, what is Canon doing? ......Saving pixels!

Now i hear they've thought about it, and are adding a firmware upgrade at some point??? So the handbrake can be turned off and it will be hopefully able to shoot, i hope more than 3 frames per sec!! But i guess more than one frame.......is a bonus!!! When do we expect this firmware?

Didn't Canon do the research and ask what was the major points of the Mirrorless camera is, ...but the silent mode!

If they dont get this right now.......the loyalty of pro camera users has gone for good, to Sony, Fuji who know the Mirrorless market, and what is needed.

Any new information about the rumored 200-600mm lens?

Over the years there have been quite a few rumors about a 200-600mm lens, some even showed patents.
There has been a lot of discussion and the consensus was that a 200-600 f5.6 is not a viable option, because
it would get too heavy and too expensive to make.

This would mean that canons best bet is to do what nikon did and release a 200-500 f5.6
Has there been any talk about such a lens? when could such a lens be released? possibly
together with the 7d iii next year?

Addendum:

I am hobby wildlifephotographer and value flexibility and portability a lot. That is why i really enjoy the 150-600 super tele zooms.
For the past year i had the tamron 150-600 g2. It has great stabilisation, weights only two kilos and has ok build quality. It had one
Problem though. The image quality wasnt really great. It was ok and most would be happy, but i want to print relatively big and the sharpnes wasnt holding up for that.
Thats why i bought the sigma 150-600 sport. At least my copy of it gets really close to the canon 100-400 ii image quality, so that
is really statisfying. But the stabilisation in the viewfinder is way way worse than tamron or canon and it also weighs one kilo more.

If canon can release a 200-500 f5.6 with sharpness close to the 100-400 ii with their great build quality, their good image stabilisation
and make it relativly light weight, they would have the optimal wildlife lens for people that like to be flexible.

Advice Wanted - Help me decide on new camera

I've been considering a new camera. Currently I have an old (circa 2009) Canon T1i with 2 lenses a 70-300 L and a 24-105 L (v1). I'm very much an amateur and use my camera for a wide range of subjects: my children, landscapes, Formula 1 races, vacation pics, etc. I also have an old Canon HV20 camcorder that has started acting up lately and for me I really need something that does both stills and video well. It would be perfect if I have one camera that works well for both as I need that flexibility. The T1i video function is terrible.

Carrying my T1i with a battery grip and with the 70-300 L never bothers me much so I"m not necessarily concerned with weight or size. I also don't have much of a preference between FF or crop.

IF you were in my shoes, which direction would you go? Upgrade to an 80D, 7D II, M50 with lens adapter? Sell it all and switch to Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji? Wait and hope the 90D is released in the next 2-3 months (probably not likely though). I do think the 80D would be a better option for me than the 7D as I can see the benefits of the tilt/flip and touchscreen, especially with video.

Question for the folks here, which direction would you go were you me? My budget is around $1200-$1500 tops.
