ePhotozine, a reliable site, has posted a first review of the new lens with measurements of MTF etc. The new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II gives a its fatter brother a good run for its money by the same tests.

Staging a shoot on the D/L in a restaurant or bar - tips appreciated

I occasionally get nutty requests from friends for a shoot from time to time. Never major events -- I don't do weddings or anything like that. It's usually a quick portrait session, some product work to help someone sell something online or possibly I get asked to attend a social event and casually work the crowd.

This latest one is odd. Thought I'd share and ask the team what they'd bring to the party.

Some friends are starting something resembling a social club, evening-out club, etc. and they want promotional shots of the two organizing people having a good time out. Casual shots, almost candids, but slightly scripted -- either seated at dinner or standing at a bar full of people. The only creative asks I could discern from them (from asking them for examples of what they're looking for) are low light shots with interesting backgrounds and small DOF -- they are all about hip dangling artisanal lightbulbs, string lights, or possibly neon in the background of the shot. That's the vibe they want. Samples they offered:

The tricky bit is they don't have social/influence/connections pull to actually stage a shoot in a restaurant or bar, so we'll be doing on the D/L without permission, can't use a speedlites, etc. In effect, I need to act like a buddy with a camera shooting his friends and not like a guy trying to nail a shot, chimping, directing the subjects, etc.

Yes, it's a ridiculous ask. I have told them this and they understand. They still want to try.

Was probably just going to bring the 35 f/2 IS and 50 f/1.4 and call it good. The only other remotely large aperture instrument would be shooting my 70-200 f/2.8L IS II on the long end, and I presume that's a non-starter in crowded places.

Tips appreciated. How would you handle this? Not just gear but also tips for using limited available lighting, strategies to setup and shoot very quickly, etc.

Will Sigma add a sibling to 24-35 f2 like they did with the 18-35 & 50-100 1.8?

First thread here!

I wonder if I'm in the extreme minority here but I'd love to see Sigma add a 50-85mm f2 zoom to pair with the 24-35 f2, in the same way they now have the 50-100 alongside the 18-35 1.8 for APS-C.

What focal length would you want to see in a second FF f2 zoom from Sigma bearing in mind weight and presumably lacking IS based on all the other Art lenses.

Do you think this is a realistic thing Sigma might do in the near future?

This is what we know Canon will be announcing for Photokina

Photokina is just over a month away, and Canon’s announcement plans haven’t exactly come into focus yet. There are the obvious products enthusiasts want Canon to announce, and then there is the reality.
Below is the gear we know for certain Canon is going to announce ahead of the September tradeshow.
We’ve got at least 3 lenses coming.

Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III
Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III

I think it would be strange if Canon didn’t announce a high volume lens. Most of us would like to see a new 50mm lens, but I sadly can’t say that one is coming.

Canon has previously waited until after Photokina to announce a high volume lens...

Industry News: Leica announces the M10-P

Exceptionally discreet, the new Leica M10-P allows photographers to see and not be seen
August 21, 2018 — Go unnoticed with the Leica M10-P, the newest, most inconspicuous addition to the Leica M series. Exceptionally discreet, the M10-P embodies the essence of the M philosophy and raises the traditional subtlety of the M series to an unprecedented level. The new Leica M10-P separates itself from other digital cameras with its almost inaudible mechanical shutter release and omission of the classic red-dot logo to covertly capture candid moments.

The most notable feature of the Leica M10-P speaks volumes to the core philosophy of the M series, yet it is virtually silent to the ear. At the heart of this camera is its newly designed shutter, making the M10-P the quietest of all digital and analog M cameras ever made. Moments requiring utmost discretion can be captured unobtrusively with the nearly silent, fast and slim M10-P. The design of the Leica M10-P is classically...

Mennonite woman.

I met this gorgeous Mennonite woman on the street in Indianapolis. We spoke briefly and she agreed to allow me to take a quick portrait. I only got one shot. So pretty, but she will never see the photo (No internet. No e-mail). Sometimes it is the chance meetings that make our day. This made my day.

Canon 5D Mark III, EF 135L f/2 @ 1/250, f/2, ISO 100, Natural light.

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III coming ahead of Photokina [CR3]

We can confirm that the second “Big White Lens” coming ahead of Photokina will be the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III. This will come along with the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III that we reported on last week.
We’re upgrading the rumor rating on the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III to [CR3]
We can only speculate what the upgrades for the new lenses will be, but we’re pretty sure weight reduction will be a big part of the equation, since these are the heaviest of the four most popular supertelephoto primes in Canon’s lineup.
There’s no word on whether or not the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II or the EF Canon 500mm f/4L IS II will receive updates soon after.

Nikon Mirrorless: Photographers give their first impressions on the new mirrorless system

Nikon has posted their 5th teaser for the new Z6 and Z7 full frame mirrorless cameras coming this week from Nikon. In this video, the testers for this new system give their first impressions and being a marketing piece, they’re obviously all positive.
You can see the rest of the teaser videos here.

Zeiss to Announce 100mm f/1.4 Otus APO Sonnar T*

According to Nokishita, Zeiss will be adding to the Otus line of lenses ahead of Photokina. The new lens will be a 100mm f/1.4 Otus APO Sonnar T*.
The new lens will have an APO Sonnar design and a filter diameter of 86mm. The new lens will be available for both ZF (Nikon) and ZE (Canon) mount.
More to come…

5DSR mark2

With all the understandable mirrorless buzz, I am wondering what the status of the 5DSR mark 2 is. I remember reading that a "faster than usual" upgrade to this was coming, presumably to incorporate a current generation sensor (and hopefully tilt/flip screen a la D850 or 6D2), no aa filter, DPAF etc. Haven't heard much about this for a while.

I personally look forward to this as much as a FF mirrorless offering.

Either one with a new generation sensor somewhere around 45-50 MP would be great, but I wonder if that sensor in a proven DSLR vs a first generation new body may be better.

Hope there is both for us to debate and agonize over.

Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Talk [CR1]

We’ve received a bit of information about Canon’s upcoming and highly anticipated first attempt at a full frame mirrorless camera. We have been unable to confirm this information with known sources, but we figured we’d share it anyway.
We’re told that marketing material for the camera is currently being produced by various Canon subsidiaries around the globe.
A couple of people have claimed to have seen the camera and have given some description of it.

It looks like a bulkier EOS M50. It’s taller, wider and thicker, though the mount is still an unknown.
The camera model number begins with “R”. We’re not sure what that “R” would be in reference too, but apparently it’s not a codename.
Currently, all signs are pointing to an official announcement after Photokina, but Canon may surprise with a development announcement for the show, which begins September 26, 2018.
Take this information with a big grain of salt until we can upgrade the [CR1] rating.

If the EF Mount Is Phased Out, What to Do With Quiver?

If EF is dethroned by a new full-frame mirrorless mount, would you hold on to your collection of EF lenses? How long? Would you keep those "L" beauties for the rest of your life, leaving them as a legacy to posterity?

What type of performance threshold would you demand of an adapter?

Personally, as y'all know, I think Canon is delaying a FF announcement because it won't bring good news to EF owners. Canon might be waiting to see how Nikon's new mount affects Nikon customers...

But I also believe Canon will continue to service current EF lenses and any in the pipeline for another 7-10 years. So, call me chicken little, or just an EF owner interested in the question of what to do with lenses that will no longer have the great resale value we've enjoyed for many years.
