Help me pick the right wide angle lens for Emperor Penguins

Although I've been to Antarctica 3 times, So Georgia 2x and spent 2 wks on the Falklands, this will be my first (and only!) trip to Snow Hill for the Emperors so I want to do it right because there will be no "do overs"--time's running out for me :( My wildlife kit which has taken me almost every where in the world I've wanted to go and has worked great for me is the 7DMkII, 100-400 II, 24-105, Sigma Art 18-35 f/1.8 (plus all the TC and extenders, etc). The Sigma is not weather sealed so I've only used it in Africa for night photography and low light people photography. I've also got an M5 system but lack of weather sealing makes me hesitant to use it although I've used it in some cold weather. Thick gloves would make it a true nightmare there, most likely! So my question is what wide angle lens should I invest in for my 7D for this trip since there are possibilities that the chicks may come close to us and I don't want to miss these shots, esp in context with the colony/chicks behind. I certainly am not adverse to brands other than Canon since I'm not a frequent wide angle shooter but would prefer to have something that has future use as well. Autofocus is a plus since less fumbling with gloves and moving objects is preferable. Looking forward to your advice--

Canon zoom for portraits incl new 70-200

Hi All

I had been considering buying a 70-200 2.8 recently for taking pictures of the 1 year old grandchild. Given that the Mark III was coming I thought I’d hold off for the new release and then either buy the new upgraded lens, or get a Mark II secondhand at an extra discounted price. The new release information has led me to question what I should do.

Currently I have a 6D Mark II, 24-105 Mark I and 70-300L. I have some other lenses but they aren’t relevant for this purpose.

I am primarily looking for pictures with good subject isolation and background blur, and these will be shot mainly with available light both indoors and outdoors and with the grandchild just doing what she does, not staged stationary portraits. I am also not looking for the ultra short DOF with the eye in focus but the nose and ear blurred. I am also not looking for primes. I’ve tried an 85 1.2 and 200 2.8 and sold both, as well as still having an 85 1.8 but it’s not flexible enough for a fast moving kid.

So my options are:

1. Stick with the existing lenses. 24-105 doesn’t give me as much isolation and blur as I’d like, and the 70-300 drops to 5.6 fairly early in its zoom length, so once I am out to 200 or so I am now pushing iso and possibly not getting as much isolation / blur as I’d like.

2. Buy the 70-200 2.8 Mark II (maybe used) and hopefully save a reasonable amount of cash vs the Mark III for pretty much the same optical performance.

3. Buy the new 70-200 2.8 Mark III - pay full price but get the latest coatings and a new product warranty.

4. Buy the new 70-200 F4 Mark Ii IS. Lose 1 stop vs the 2.8, but save cash, get the latest updates and warranty. But am I going to get the isolation and blur that I want? Up to 105 mm I might as well use by 24-105 at the same aperture, but above that I am spending quite a bit of money to only get 1 stop extra vs my existing 70-300 and is that difference worth spending so much money to get?

I should also mention the I would intend to keep the 70-300L regardless as a travel lens as the 70-200 2.8 is so much heavier and larger, and the extra 100mm over the F4 makes it more flexible. So there would be no selling this lens to offset the cost of a new lens.

So let me know what you think, and I’d especially like to hear from anyone who has previously owned the 70-300L and can give me their experiences.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

<em><strong>Next Generation of EF 70-200mm Lenses Features a Variety of Updates Including Enhanced Optical Image Stabilization in the f/4 and the Inclusion of Air Sphere Coating in the f/2.8</strong></em></p>
<p><strong>MELVILLE, N.Y., June 7, 201</strong>8 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced two new telephoto zoom lenses, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM. The new lenses serve advanced amateur and professional photographers in a variety of applications and solutions including wildlife, landscapes, portrait and sports photography. Canon EF 70-200mm focal-length lenses are a popular option for photographers in need of a long zoom range that maintains a relatively compact design. In addition, these updated lenses inherit the same overall build-quality and ruggedness photographers have come to expect from the Canon EF L-series line of lenses.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“At the core of image capturing, Canon believes the lens is just as important as the camera. A seamless relationship between the two allows photographers to produce emotion-evoking and timeless images,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Canon is excited to offer photographers two distinct options in the 70-200mm focal-length, continuing to further expand our optics heritage.”</p>

The new Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM features numerous updates over its predecessor, making it an ideal lens for advanced amateur photographers using Canon DSLR cameras such as the EOS 6D Mark II or EOS 80D. Most notably, Optical Image Stabilization is upgraded from three stops to five shutter speed stops of correction over the original f/4 lens. The improved IS allows photographers to more easily capture crisp, in-focus images without the use of a tripod. The new lens also features three IS modes, each uniquely designed and suitable for a variety of shooting situations, such as the capture of still subjects, panning or fast moving objects2. Furthermore, the IS operational noise has been reduced, which proves ideal for photographers shooting in a concert hall or on-stage shooting at the theatre.</p>
<p>Additional noteworthy features of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM include:</p>
<ul>
<li>One fluorite lens and two UD lenses helps to provide high-image quality</li>
<li>Minimum focusing distance shortened from 1.2m to 1m (3.9ft to 3.3ft)</li>

5D mk4 focusing issues

Hi, I’ve had a few focus problems so far which in;Oates before about with my 5D4 , but those were tracking walking people / models and have learn now to get the focus tracking on earlier than I think / used to do with other 5D series .
And a basic AMFA adjustments - which often I have to do for each distance scenario on the fly at a job.

But latest one is crazy , shooting a still life , whisky bottles and the focus on one shot mode is really unreliable.
I am shooting it f2 on mainly 85 f1.2L and 135 f2L and 50 1.2 L lenses .
Room light + modelling lights. Labels are slightly metallic , but plenty of high contrast detail for it to grab focus on.
And it’s not doing that consistently.
I never used to have to check focus in situations like this. Or the variation would be really subtle , so I’d shoot 3 shots and use the best one , but even the worst four one was totally acceptable.
Now I have to shoot 5 to 10 shots to get one in perfect focus , and sometimes more!

So each shot on the same spot in one shot mode is a different focus , some times inches out , I have to shoot several shots to get one in perfect focus .
Even doing AMFA calibration is unreliable as , I cannon guarantee a basic static focus start point to work from to gauge any AMFA adjustment.

Has anyone else having problems with their 5D 4?

Now I’d better add I’m a professional photographer of 15 years , I know what I’m doing , and limitations , and shoot quite technically , so please don’t ask / state the obvious .
Everything I’m doing is right by previous cameras and situations and not been a problem.

Cheers!
S

Possible Confirmation of Takeover Talks Between Apple and Canon !!!

Here is a copy of an interesting block of translated text taken out of a stated-to-be
email taken from the Japanese side of what is a purported message BETWEEN Apple's Luca Maestri, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, CC: Dan Ricccio, Vice President Hardware Engineering ...AND... Canon's Toshizo Tanaka, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, CC: Shigeyuki Matsumoto, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer indicating that Apple wishes to heavily change its internal structure into new product groups which may include purchasing all of Canon.

Noting that Oce' is a Canon division and that Canon is mentioned a few times and that PROFESSIONAL STILLS and VIDEO cameras are also mentioned seems to indicate that Apple MAY INDEED be taking a closer look at various companies such as Canon.

There are SIGNIFICANT product insights which SEEM to confirm earlier posts I have made in other forums about Apple wanting to bring CPU, GPU and RAM chip production within Apple itself! I also see mentions of NEW professional-level APPLE SERVER and workstations systems, and mentions of plastic or metal 3D printing, in addition to mentions of "8K" and larger resolution networked display systems! I also see mentions of possible Apple forays into Telecom communications (i.e. private wireless Applecentric voice and data networks!), TV network broadcasting, self-driving vehicles and consumer robotics.

The text below is a human-translated text block where it was indicated to me that it was cut out of a larger block of email text. I won't ask and they wont tell is what is tacitly understood between me and my sources.

I DO THINK THAT THERE MAY YET BE SUBSTANCE to the rumour that Apple wishes to BUY ALL OF CANON !!!!

I suspect this is a "Shared Vision" document intended to showcase a future vision within a combined Apple and Canon entity about what products and systems are to be focused upon in the near and medium-term future. I should note that while there are some Japanese government roadblocks to a Canon takeover by Apple, if the talks have proceeded to the level of executive noted at the top of this post, then it means SOME Japanese government officials have ALREADY given tacit approval to just such a merger!

In my opinion, it also make technological sense since Canon has the 3rd largest patent profile of the major media and computer companies! Apple would receive microchip manufacturing expertise and patents, optical and other spectral sensor technology, 2D printing technology, high-end display technology and a large consumer base which already would be a captive audience for selling advanced future Apple products based upon a purchase of Canon technology! And financially, the $48 to $55 Billion US that this would cost Apple is barely a low-medium-size dip into Apple's cash bucket! It would be a bargain when compared to Apple trying to buy Sony!

YUP!!! This is a pretty BIG OUTLINE of what I think looks to be a viable outline of future Apple product development and Apple PLANS for the PURCHASE of Canon!

I do note the CC: of the chief technology officers of Apple and Canon indicates that TECHNICAL ASPIRATIONS were included as part of a general division of products group matrix which is probably a spreadsheet that was done FIRST by the two Finance guys and then sub-tasked to the technical people! The text to me is definitely a bit language-sensitive where some technical terms seemed confusingly placed, which in my eyes supports LIKELY Japanese-to-English translation problems.
That gives me a decent bit of support to its authenticity!

Also note the mention of xBook TWICE in the document! Is this an accidental disclosure of an upcoming Apple high-performance laptop because xBook is NOT YET in any Apple announcements or on its website!

NOW If I get a letter from Canon OR Apple lawyers to take this down then we DEFINITELY know its REAL !!!!

I had asked about a timeline and I was informed that none is/was outlined in the original email text.

REMEMBER! YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!

18-135 STM vs USM

My wife uses my old 30D and an 18-55.

Recently the lens has stopped working it's aperture so if it tries to shoot anything other than wide open the camera throws an error 99. I could pull the lens apart and try and fix it.. but it's old, and there's no IS.

So we're thinking a new lens is in order especially as she has a bit of hand shake, also she really wants a bit more zoom and doesn't want to change lenses in the field.

So an 18-135 looks like a good idea.

Now I appreciate that optically the STM and nano-USM versions of this lens are more or less identical, and I can get either lens for about the same price.. so is there any other aspect that differentiates the two?

Ideally I'd plump for the more reliable lens, which makes me inclined to go for the STM as the nano-USM system is new so bugs may not be fully ironed out.. however I'm guessing.

is there anything I'm missing?, which lens would others go for?

Also note: my wife primarily prints at 6"x4", so lens correction (or lack of in the 30D) isn't an issue, when she wants to print larger we can process in DPP.

Sony a73 Review and Playlist | Dustin

Hi everyone. On the Canon front it has been somewhat of a slow season, with more rumors and hopes than actual product releases. On the Sony side of things, however, it has been a very busy season. I've wrapped up my long term coverage of those interested in the a73.

I’ve wrapped up my coverage of the a73 – a great camera, by the way! Here’s my review linkage:

Canon lens article numbers

How are Canon article numbers constructed? They are used on almost all of Canon's camera articles.
My latest lens, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM, is called 2271C005[AA], at least in Europe. In the U.S. it seems to be called 2271C002.
I guess 2271 is just a unique number.
The middle letter could be some type of version. My old 24-70/2.8L had an A (8014A008[AA]) and the new 24-70/2.8L II has a B (5175B005[AA]).
The three digit number suffix seem to mostly be a low number, often 001 or 005.
The two letters in square brackets are for all my gear [AA], except for a LP 1216 pouch [BA] and a professional camera strap [AB].

Review: Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro by Northlight Images

HTML:
<p>No one does better tilt-shift lens reviews than Keith at Northlight Images. He has completed his exhaustive review of the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L, a lens he thinks is the best performing tilt-shift lens that Canon has ever made.</p>
<p><strong>From Northlight Images:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Without quantitative testing I can’t be sure, but the TS-E90mm F2.8L Macro is probably the sharpest lens I’ve ever tested (it could have been the TS-E135, but I’m not quibbling).</p>
<p>The build quality is superb, and putting it next to the old TS-E90 you really do get a feel for progress in lens construction. It is well up to its ‘L’ designation and red ring.</p>
<p>If I have a complaint, it’s the limited throw of the focus ring, which is simply too short for easy manual focus, especially at non-macro distances.</p>
<p>Optically, I couldn’t fault the new lens, it’s performance at f/2.8 is exceptional, with only vignetting to really take note of. <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/ts-e-90mm-f2-8l-macro-review/">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

CPS inspection/cleanup replaces the 5D3 grip material for no additional cost.

I just popped into the shiny new Canon facility in Burbank. I turned in my 5D3 for it's first pit-stop with a Canon professional since I got it some 6 years ago.

I was just going for the general maintenance service that comes with my CPS membership. While I was there, I was curious to see what the cost would be to additionally address the peeling grip materials I'm seeing in various places.

The answer shocked me: it's free, provided it's not on the swinging hinge piece of the battery cover. Apparently, the entire grip other than the little battery cover piece is all on the same repair SKU and it is stocked as part of the maintenance service. (Not sure if this is true for all models.)

Super fast to just walk in and drop it off, and they said it often is turned around same day. That's insane.
