More Full Frame Mirrorless Talk, Maybe Some Surprises? [CR1]

HTML:
We seem to be getting information from new places every week now, so please <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/the-canon-rumors-rating-system-explained/">mind the ratings</a> you’re seeing on our most recent posts. However, there are times [CR1] rumors turn out to have some truth to them.</p>
<p><strong>About a new Canon mirrorless:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>We’re told that a full frame mirrorless will be coming in September.</li>
<li>Canon’s new mirrorless will <strong>NOT</strong> be part of the EOS system, the focus will be on video.</li>
<li>Think EOS 5D Mark IV, but mirrorless.</li>
<li>4K @ 30/25/24 FPS</li>
<li>Codename begins with Z</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Other Information:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>New mirrorless lens at Photokina (EF-M 32mm f/1.4?)</li>
<li>New Cinema EOS body coming before Photokina</li>
</ol>
<p>There’s always the possibility that there are multiple cameras are being developed concurrently, and that the above information only covers one of them.</p>
<p>Take this stuff with a grain of salt, but I find some intriguing ideas above that may fit with more cryptic information we’ve received over the last month or so.</p>

<p><strong>The “Bokeh Master” with Longest Focal Length Among Sigma Wide-Aperture F1.4 Art Lenses</strong>

The Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is the ninth lens in the Sigma F1.4 line-up designed for full-frame cameras. To combine outstanding wide-aperture, mid-telephoto performance with F1.4 brightness at maximum aperture, this lens incorporates 17 optical elements in 12 groups, including three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements and one aspherical lens element. This optical setup minimizes axial chromatic aberration to deliver ultra high resolution along with ample peripheral light volume, which minimizes vignetting. As a result, the area in focus is extremely sharp, while the out-of-focus area features a beautiful bokeh effect with highly natural colors, making this a desired lens for portrait photography. The optical design also minimizes sagittal coma flare, making it an excellent choice for capturing starry skies.</p>
<p>Featuring the Sports line level dust- and splash-proof design, this lens can be used in varying weather conditions. The high-speed, high-accuracy autofocus helps photographers react in an instant to capture those special moments.</p>
<p>Other lens highlights include carbon fiber reinforced plastic hood for durability and compatibility of the Canon mount lens with the Canon Lens Aberration Correction function.</p>

Beginner Macro Lady Bug

Well, I don't have the gear or the know how most of you have. All I have is a Mamiya-Macro-Sekor (Tomioka) 60mm f/2.8 adapted to my 5D mark III and I have to hand hold (But I have a bellows on the way). It is an old (50 years old) M42 screw mount lens, manual focus, and no IS. So here's my first attempt. The lens will achieve 1:1, I just have to learn how to use it properly and get a light so I can get in closer. The plant was swaying in a light breeze, so I had to take several shots to get the timing right for focus. The colors are straight out of the camera. Not a bad lens for $20. I'll try again when the bellows gets here... also 50 years old but new and in the box for $15 (Pentax).

This was at f/2.8 and I probably should have stopped down a little. Still learning.

By the way, can anyone recommend a rail to mount the bellows unit on for my tripod? I'm thinking I need everything real rigid so a long plate to attach the bellows to and then attach that to the tripod.

Review: Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS. Is it a Better Option Over the EF 85mm f/1.2L II?

HTML:
<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YDlzuiTMGeQ" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe><p>Jared Polin has completed his review of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS, and finds out if this is a better option over the Canon classic, the EF 85mm f/1.2L II.</p>
<p>Personally, I sold my EF 85mm f/1.2L II after using the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS for a few weeks. The advantages of the new 85mm lens such as IS, faster AF, better built quality, and lighter weight were just too much for me to overlook.</p>

Patent: More Work Being Done on Organic Sensors

HTML:
Are organic sensors the next big thing in sensor technology? They could be. Canon along with other companies continue to put resources into their development</p>
<p><strong>US Patent <a href="http://pdfaiw.uspto.gov/.aiw?PageNum=0&docid=20180138432">20180138432</a> from <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-more-details-on-a-organic-sensor">Canon News</a>:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Canon continues to research organic photo electric elements, this one goes into a little more details, and discusses an actual sensor more so than prior patent applications. <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-more-details-on-a-organic-sensor">Read more…</a></p></blockquote>

Patent: Diffractive Optics Element Improvements

HTML:
We continue to see new patent applications for diffractive optics technology. We’re all still waiting to see if the EF 600mm f/4 DO IS will become an actual consumer product, or if Canon is going to take things in a different direction.</p>
<p><strong>From <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-diffractive-optical-element-improvements">Canon News</a>:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Canon describes how to manufacturer a diffractive optical element with a refractive resin component attached to it to further reduce chromatic aberrations.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>From US Patent Application <a href="http://pdfaiw.uspto.gov/.aiw?PageNum=0&docid=20180143350">20180143350</a>:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>in a refractive optical system using the refraction of light, lenses formed from glass materials having different dispersion characteristics are used together in combination to reduce the chromatic aberration. For example, in the case of an object lens of a telescope or the like, a glass material having low dispersion and a glass material having high dispersion are used in combination as a positive lens and a negative lens, respectively, to correct the chromatic aberration which appears on the axis.</p></blockquote>
<p>The goal of diffractive optics lenses is to reduce the physical size of the lenses. This could help in a couple of areas such as smaller and lighter supertelephoto lenses and to reduce the size of longer fast lenses for full frame mirrorless applications.</p>

ZEISS Announces New High-End Cinema Lens Family, ZEISS Supreme Primes

HTML:
<em>With its 13 high-speed, full-frame, prime lenses for high-quality film productions, ZEISS is focusing on maximum quality, low weight, and significant versatility when it comes to creating superb visual imagery.</em></p>
<p><strong>ZEISS</strong> has introduced a new family of high-speed lenses for high-end film production: The ZEISS Supreme Prime family consists of 13 lenses with fixed focal lengths between 15 and 200 millimeters, the majority with a maximum aperture of T1.5. “The lenses are designed for film productions of an extremely high quality,” says Christophe Casenave from ZEISS. “They are perfect for high-budget advertising or feature films, for example.” ZEISS Supreme Primes are designed to cover cinematic large format camera sensors and are compatible with all of the latest camera models, such as the Sony Venice, ARRI Alexa LF, and RED Monstro. According to Casenave, the versatility of the Supreme Prime lenses to create different visual looks is due to the gentle sharpness, the aesthetic focus fall-off and elegant bokeh. The lenses are extremely flexible and can be used equally well for science fiction thrillers as well as for dramas.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Compact and Lightweight

</strong>“Weighing an average of 1600 grams (3.5 pounds), ZEISS Supreme Primes are significantly lighter and smaller than comparable lenses on the market,” says Casenave. With these compact and lightweight lenses, ZEISS is responding to many camera operators’ desire for compact equipment that stills meets the highest standards of quality. “ZEISS Supreme Primes are unbelievably rugged and reliable. Regardless of whether filming in the desert or in the Arctic, the lenses perform flawlessly. And in the event that something should ever break, our worldwide service network provides fast and professional help.”</p>
<p><strong>ZEISS eXtended Data Metadata Technology

</strong>The ZEISS Supreme Primes are equipped with the ZEISS eXtended Data metadata technology. Introduced in 2017, ZEISS eXtended Data provides frame by frame data on lens vignetting and distortion in addition to the standard lens metadata provided using Cooke’s /i technology1 protocol. This greatly speeds up the entire film production’s workflow. When using visual effects for example, with only a few clicks, the lens properties can be removed so that computer-generated effects imagery can be accurately applied to the captured imagery. The lens properties can then be reapplied with the same click of a button and combined with the film material to create a realistic image. Previously, all of the data had to be measured manually so that it could be corrected in post-production. But ZEISS eXtended Data eliminates this time-consuming job.</p>
<p><strong>Price and Availability

</strong>The first ZEISS Supreme Primes lenses with focal lengths of 25, 29, 35, 50, and 85 millimeters will be available starting on August 1, 2018. The ZEISS Supreme Prime 100 millimeter will be available in December 2018. The set of six lenses, consisting of the focal lengths mentioned above, is available from ZEISS Cinema lens dealers for 108,000 USD. The remaining focal lengths will be released successively until 2020.</p>

Three Sensors Being Tested for Canon Full Frame Mirrorless? [CR1]

HTML:
It’s no secret that Canon is hard at work on prosumer mirrorless cameras, including at least one full frame mirrorless camera.</p>
<p>We’re told that three sensors are being tested in various camera body configurations, each with a different pixel count. The source claims that 24mp, 28mp and 36mp sensors are being used. There is no mention if these are all new sensors or if they are modified versions of current image sensors.</p>
<p>We do find it interesting that these sorts of things are being talked about, but we still don’t have not confirmed what sort of mount solution Canon is going to come up with. As we saw this past week, Canon has <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-canon-wide-angle-zoom-for-full-frame-mirrorless-camera/">patented a dedicated full frame mirrorless optical formula</a>, which tells us we’re getting a new EOS M mount for full frame sensors.</p>

<p><strong>Fast Autofocus, Automatic Functions, and Sleek Design Offer Ease of Use</strong></p>
<p>The X-T100 uses a Phase Detection Autofocus system and algorithm originally designed for flagship X Series models, to ensure quick and precise capture of images even when photographing fast-moving subjects. Adding to its ease of use, the camera also features an advanced SR+ Auto shooting mode that is capable of detecting the subject and scene simultaneously, and selecting the optimum settings accordingly to provide intelligent, fully-automatic shooting. This mode is perfect for situations where it is difficult to select the right settings, or when a series of quick shots is what the photographer is after.</p>
<p>The X-T100 features a three-inch touch panel display to make composition easy. Featuring</p>
<p>1.04-million dots for a crystal clear view of the action, this screen swings out horizontally to almost 180 degrees. Not only does this help to compose shots at awkward angles, it also makes it possible to take selfies or shoot video blogs with a clear view of what’s in the frame.</p>
<p>Although the X-T100 has the look of a timeless classic, the camera body weighs just 448g with battery and memory card, so it’s small and light enough to accompany photographers wherever they go. It also comes with a shoulder strap and a detachable grip for added security and comfort.</p>
<p><strong>Artistic Expressions for Everyday Creativity</strong></p>
<p>The X-T100 offers 11 variations of unique FUJIFILM Film Simulation modes and 17 variations of Advanced Filters—all of which provide photographers with the ability to add greater artistic expression to images. Setting adjustments on the X-T100 is quick and easy with one-step operation that is made possible via the function and exposure compensation dials on top of the body, and the touch-and-flick function available on the rear LCD monitor.</p>
<p>Not only can the X-T100 produce breathtaking stills, but with 4K and the option to shoot in slow motion, it’s great for video too. Full HD movies can be shot at speeds of up to 59.94fps for super-smooth footage. To help maximize sound quality, the X-T100 is equipped with a microphone port so videographers can record audio from a compatible external microphone (sold separately).</p>
<p><strong>Bluetooth® Technology for Quick and Seamless Image Transfer</strong></p>
<p>The X-T100 features the latest Bluetooth® low energy technology, allowing users to quickly and seamlessly transfer images using the free “FUJIFILM Camera Remote” app. This function enables constant image transfer, even while in shooting mode, so images can be uploaded and shared within moments.</p>

LensTip review: Nikon AF-S 180-400 mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR

https://www.lenstip.com/531.4-Lens_review-Nikon_Nikkor_AF-S_180-400_mm_f_4E_TC1.4_FL_ED_VR_Image_resolution.html

TL/DR version -- it's brilliant ...provided you don't use that 1.4x (bold below is my emphasis):

"If you decide to use the teleconverter, though, the situation is quite different and MTFs - distinctly lower. Resolution decrease is noticeably sharper than in the case of other contemporary, expensive, high quality telephoto lenses cooperating with a teleconverter. I admit the performance fell short of our expectations; we thought that such an optically complex teleconverter, designed to cooperate with just one model of lens, would perform much better than traditional, external devices which, after all, are supposed to fit many professional telephoto lenses of a given system.

As a result, even if the performance at 550 mm cannot exactly be called weak, as the results allow you to enjoy fully useful, good images, it is not something we expected from such an expensive lens."

Ouch. They don't typically report T/C results and we have no Canon 200-400 1.4x review at LT to compare to, but they went so far as to say above that traditional modular T/C use on a good telephoto lens does better, not worse, than this dialed-in and fixed T/C does. That's somewhat shocking.

Supertelephoto Lens Updates Are Getting Closer [CR1]

HTML:
Updates to Canon’s line of “big white lenses” is getting closer we’re told. Some of these new lenses will be present at the World Cup in Russia, which begins on June 14.</p>
<p>We generally assume the “big whites” as the following lenses.</p>
<ul>
<li>EF 200mm f/2L IS</li>
<li>EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II</li>
<li>EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II</li>
<li>EF 500mm f/4L IS II</li>
<li>EF 600mm f/4L IS II</li>
<li>EF 800mm f/5.6L IS</li>
</ul>
<p>We weren’t told which lenses would be in testing, but we highly doubt all of these lenses would be tested at World Cup games. It makes sense that 300mm to 600mm lenses could potentially be used.</p>
<p>If you’re watching the matches, keep a close eye on the sidelines.</p>

70-200 2.8 with 2x tele vs 100-400mk2 with 1.4 tele

Looking at getting rid of the sigma 150-600 and replacing with one of these two combos as with a trip to the Galapagos coming up weight savings are a priority. Losing some reach with the 70-200 option but getting a more versatile rig than the 100-400 and being that it will be mounted on a 7d2 I am guessing it will suffice as distance to wildlife in the Galapagos should not be an issue most of the time. Any oppinions on the best option from those who know?

<p><strong>Irvine, CA – Red Tusk, LLC.</strong> announced the relaunch of their <a href="https://6c61e7.kckb.st"><strong><em>KOBRA Flash Modifier </em></strong></a>on Kickstarter with exclusive features and competitive pricing.</p>
<p>The <strong><em>KOBRA </em></strong>was designed to give photographers an effective modified flash solution that is lightweight, flexible and with a sleek design. Professional photographer, Paul McKelvey, conceived the idea for <strong><em>KOBRA </em></strong>through his disappointment in the current market. McKelvey said, “I have used all the ‘on camera flash’ modifiers that are available and have been unsatisfied with the results. I decided to stop complaining and make my own.”</p>
<p>The new Kickstarter campaign includes the improved <strong><em>KOBRA Band</em></strong>, a high-grade, flexible silicone that is not affected by high or low temperatures. The new design features vent holes to allow air to circulate over the flash head and prevent the potential for overheating.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Red Tusk, LLC. took the lessons learned from their first campaign to heart. Manufacturing in the U.S. resulted in an unrealistic funding goal. During their research and design, they found an experienced manufacturing facility specializing in quality silicon molding that would meet all their needs at a lower cost.</p>
<p>As a result, backers will find improved pricing over the previous campaign. Pre-orders for the <strong><em>KOBRA Flash Modifier </em></strong>starts at $38, a 25% discount off the retail price.</p>
<p><strong>Red Tusk, LLC. </strong>is confident the <strong><em>KOBRA </em></strong>will be a vital part of a photographers’ kit. “The beauty of the <strong><em>KOBRA </em></strong>is that it gives the user the ability to control the light, explains McKelvey. “You can focus on capturing moments</p>
<p>rather than looking for ceilings or walls to bounce off. The <strong><em>KOBRA </em></strong>will give you a high-quality outcome, no matter what lighting conditions you are in.”</p>
<p>Visit the <strong><a href="https://6c61e7.kckb.st"><em>KOBRA Flash Modifier </em>Kickstarter</a></strong> page to pre-order, and learn more about the product. The campaign runs until June 9, 2018.</p>

A Cinema Series DSLR Isn't Happening, But a New Cinema Line Likely is [CR1]

HTML:
Ever since the Canon EOS-1D C, there has been a lot of chatter and desire to see another “C” labeled DSLR. The EOS-1D C was quite expensive, at more than twice the price of the very similar EOS-1D X and it didn’t sell all that well until it saw heavy discounts.</p>
<p>We’re being told again, in a very cryptic manner that a new cinema ILC series of camera is likely coming by the end of 2018. The source claims that the final decision about releasing the product has not yet been made and that there is still a possibility it will get shelved.</p>
<p>The source did note that their no sign that a EOS C100 Mark II replacement is on the way and the EOS C200 could become the entry level Cinema EOS camera and that this new form factor ILC will bridge the gap between EOS still cameras and Cinema EOS cameras.</p>
<p>This is all very interesting, and we think there is some plausibility behind it all. As such, we’ll remain cautiously optimistic.</p>

Canon EOS 80D Will Be The Next DSLR Replaced [CR1]

HTML:
We’re being told that 2018 will be a slow DSLR year for Canon, but that we’ll likely a see a replacement to the EOS 80D next, and it’s possible that its coming in late 2018.</p>
<p>While a EOS 7D Mark II replacement will be more exciting to the Canon community, there is absolutely no signs of an EOS 7D Mark III announcement coming any time soon.</p>
<p>While no specifications are available at this time, we’re told that internally Canon plans to put DPAF equipped 4K in all non-Rebels going forward. This shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise, but it is worth noting.</p>

Creatures from the ocean!

Today is my last day in O'ahu.
So, tomorrow, we return to life's reality: work :-\ >:(.

This is what I shot.
Went to a beach known for sea turtle frequenting. Actually, tried a few days ago at a different location, called Turtle Bay, but I suppose it's too developed for a resort, that I didn't see any.
Then, today, one turtle at a different beach. It comes up on the beach to sun itself. Said to stay for several hours. This is about 30 inches long with the shell. Saw a smaller one which didn't come out of the water. Other people said they saw a few others. Anyway, the locals say that there're about 10 residing in the waters of this beach. Just no such luck for me.

Sony switchers face development limbo!

Now we now why Canon marches to its own tune. it remember's Sony's dismal record of commitment to its own technology and customers.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-20/new-sony-ceo-to-detail-shift-away-from-gadgets-in-mid-term-plan?utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_medium=social&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&utm_content=business

"Sony Corp. is done working for peanuts in the hardware business.

Kenichiro Yoshida, who took over as chief executive officer in April, is set to unveil a three-year plan on Tuesday that embraces Sony’s growing reliance on income from gaming subscriptions and entertainment. The transition is already happening: even though the company sold fewer hardware products such as televisions, digital cameras, smartphones and PlayStation consoles in the year through March, it was able to post record operating profit.

It’s a tectonic shift for a company built on manufacturing prowess. Sony popularized transistor radios, gave the world portable music with the Walkman and its TVs were considered top-of-the-line for decades. With the rise of Chinese manufacturing, making and selling gadgets has become a business with razor-thin profit margins. Investors have applauded the transformation that’s been under way since Kazuo Hirai took over as CEO in 2012, with the shares climbing more than five-fold amid a turnaround."

"Sony is proving that it can evolve with the landscape ... with a shift from a hardware-to content-driven profit model,” SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. analyst Ryosuke Katsura wrote after the company’s latest earnings report last month. “The real key is whether it provides investors with a clear road map.”

Focus Peaking Epiphany! And tilt shift.

Hi guys. About two weeks ago I went against my better judgement and spent the money from my recent Canon Speedlite sell off and bought my wife an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. I'd wanted one of the new Canon TSE lenses, but worried I would have a hard time tackling the technical side of things with TSE lenses. The up side for me would be that I could mount my M42 screw mount lenses to the small mirrorless and take advantage of IBIS and Focus Peaking.

I finally got the focus peaking feature figured out for using with my old legacy glass and took the grandson outside for some pics. That's when it hit me as I saw that band of yellow in-focus territory running across the lawn. "This would be perfect for TSE work!"

Let me explain. You all know better than I about how you can make those TSE lenses shift or tilt around the focus plane. With the focus peaking you can actually see where that focus is going or how it is going to be positioned in your photo. For guys with bad eyesight, it's a miracle! Since the TSE lenses are all manual focus it seems the two were made for each other.

So, for this reason alone, if Canon comes out with a FF body that takes EF glass (without hurting optical quality), and has focus peaking, then I would probably be all in and make that the next body I buy.

questions in regards to stabilizers for traveling

I will be doing some traveling with my 5d Mark IV. I'm looking for members opinions in regards to ways to stabalize my shots

1. What is a good quality tripod to purchase that won't break the bank, but is sturdy that I can purchase and pack in my suitcase for traveling. Had a cheap $20 tripod but of course it was a piece of garbage that was not sturdy enough

2. what does everyone suggest as something to put my camera on that would give me sturdier shots when it comes to shooting handheld video? Seems as though many use gorilla pods, is this considered the best piece of gear for the job? I'm pretty much only going to have my 5d Mark IV and a Rode VideoMic Pro attached to it.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

5D Mk4, 6D Mk2, 7D Mk2, 80D and 5D Mk 3 compared for Wildlife photography

Just posted a side by side comparison of what it is like to use the 5D Mk4, the 6D Mk2, the 7D Mk2, the 80D and the 5D Mk 3 for wildlife photography: https://www.grantatkinson.com/blog/6d-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv-7d-mark-ii-or-80d-which-mid-range-canon-dslr-for-wildlife-photography
The aim of the post is not to declare an overall winner but rather to share what my wife and i perceive to be the different cameras strengths and weaknesses, for our kind of wildlife photography. With that group of cameras, the 5D Mk4, 7D Mk2 and 5D Mk3 are all similar in their control layout, in their viewfinder autofocus, their dedicated AF multi-controllers, and their grip size. The 6D Mark 2 and 80D are smaller in the hand, and have reduced size and controls, but make a strong case for themselves with their swivel-tilt screens and their image quality.

We get asked questions often by Canon users about these five cameras, so are hoping that the post provides some useful information.
Cheers
Grant

Sending in 5D Mark IV & lenses for C-log upgrade

For those of you who have sent in your 5D Mark IV for the C-log upgrade, how did you go about packaging it, and which mail carrier did you send it through? Also, I'm thinking about sending in my lenses with my camera as well as my 85mm 1.2 L II has some bad focus issues and needs calibration so I figure I'd send in my other 2 lenses as well so that they can all be calibrated to my camera and everything done at the same time. Does anyone have any idea of the cost for the calibration of lenses to the camera? I am a CPS member silver but have enough points to upgrade to the highest CPS status if need be. if this is something that will cost me more than $100, I may as well upgrade to gold as I believe it's free for 3 lenses to be calibrated, correct? so it would in that essence pay for itself.
