EOS R1 Pre-Capture Feature Unable to assign to 'Hot Button'

I have been through my EOS R1 menus top-to-bottom a couple of times and I cannot figure out a way to assign pre-capture to an assignable 'hot' button. You can assign it to a Custom Shooting Mode - C1 for example. But there is not a single button press to call that up either. Best you can do is call up 'shooting mode' and then scroll to C1. If anyone has come up with a work around please let me know. Hopefully we get this capability in firmware.

I did find that setting up the AF back button half press for 20 FPS full press for 40 FPS is a very good option in initial testing.

Does anyone have the same problem with EOS R3?

Hi,

I have anoying problem with my EOS R3 when numbering is 9999 R3 gets nuts.
Does anyone have same problem, or do I have HW problem?

After 9999 - new folder started from 001 - all good. Then after some shoots it started from 9xxx, after some shoots more new folder from 001..
R3 is fast, but not that fast, not, when I have max 10 frames in use.

Timeline from one shoot, not with all frames.
12:37 0003
12:46 0017
12:50 9976
New File Folder
13:20 0001
13:21 0046
13:27 9981
13:44 9999
New File Folder
13:45 0014
13:48 9982
13:52 9992

Sandisk & Sony cards - same problem.
I format cards in camera for every photoshoots.
Same problem with Canon numbering or fixed naming.
Latest Firmware installed (same issue was with previous one)
Full reset for R3 done - settings back manually
Full reset for R3 done - settings back from backup
Max 10pic only in use (never 30) ,electronic
I shoot pics and videos

I never had same issue with DXII or R5

Canon has not been able to reproduce the problem with their own R3,
so "there is no problem".

R1 preorder shipping delays?

I've left my R1 on pre-order while I decided if I wanted to keep it, and have decided to keep it. I ordered from bestbuy to get the 18 months 0% to soften the blow of a 7200 order (after taxes) (Damn taxes). Mine has still not shipped and is saying I'll possibly get it by the 28th. Anyone else seeing a shipping delay on their preorder who ordered during the announcement?

A Canon Global Shutter Sensor – Would the next 3 series camera be the place to introduce one?

Canon, when they have bothered to say much about the subject have always stated that they wanted image quality to improve from model to model on their cameras. Even though Canon’s definition of image quality at times was a bit suspect (for example JPEG-only output, etc), for the most part, they have held to that,

100-500 issues with R3

I am having what appears to be communication issues between the R3 and the 100-500.

I will get a red square and it will not focus, if I pull the battery, or sometimes I just move the focus point and it recovers.

I use this lens on 2 R5 bodies and my R6 mk 2 with out issues

I use the R3 with all my other glass without issues.

Canon is shipping me a loaner kit while they look in to this but they claim to have never seen or heard of this before.
Has anyone had a similar experience? What was the fix?

All firmware is up to date.

thanks!

R5 Mk 2 and Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens - strange noise

I’m experiencing some strange noises from my Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens when used on the Canon R5 Mk 2. I’m using the Canon EF to RF control ring adapter. This does not happen on my Canon R6 Mk 2.

Also, when changing modes on the R5 Mk 2 with the Sigma lens attached (via the adapter), the same noise occurs. I can only describe the noise as scratchy. Camera is running firmware 1.0.1

Anyone else have the same issue?

Unfortunately, I don’t have a Sigma dock to check firmware but may have to buy one.

Canon EOS R1: The Best High ISO Performance Yet from a Canon sensor

Josh Holko, an award winning professional photographer and world traveller has been doing terrific noise presets and analysis of ISO performance for various professional Canon cameras over the last bunch of years. I'm thinking of switching to the Fuji system.

I have been a Canon user for many years. I started with the Canon 350D. Then there were the 5D Mark II, 6D (one of my favorites). Then a change to the Canon EOS R, and now the R5.

I mainly photograph nature, landscapes, macro.

I don't know what the issue is, but I can't get my head around the colors and photo processing from the Canon R5 in Lightroom... I don't like the colors (I'm crazy about it...), blues, greens, reds, a lot of magenta, some weird shade. I have a calibrated monitor, I tried using colorchecker profiles (from their program and lumariver).

I've read some opinions from people on the net who notice something similar.

I don't rule out that it's my imagination, colors are a subjective matter, but I'm increasingly considering switching to the GFX Fuji system. I was thinking about the GFX 100s II.

I know it's a different system, slower, smaller selection of lenses (I would miss Canon lenses the most), but I haven't been able to process photos from the R5 for a long time - it's been a torment for me....

Rf 24-105mm f/2.8L for sports?

If you've been using Canon's newest version of the 24-105mm for sports, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience with AF.

For shots from next to the goal in soccer, I had very good results from the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, but not as many accurately focused shots with the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS. Seems to lag no matter which focus modes/options I've tried. Works great for pretty much everything else but medium to near distance action shots, especially groups of players rushing towards the goal.

I find the 24-105mm range very useful for expressions and the jostling of players as they approach the goal. (I keep a 100-500mm ready to go for action farther away. No complaints!)

Thanks!

Canon EOS R1 _Problems

Received 2 pcs of R1 last week. During yesterdays sport event, one of them ignored the precapture function and directly releases the shutter with half pressed button from one second to the other. No matter precapture is activated or not. This accures horizontal and vertical. Only solution so far, is to switch of the vertical ON/OFF, to make horizontal work properly. Copy the settings from the working one did not help either. Informed Canon today, waiting for an answer now. Anyone experienced the same behavior?

Dustin Abbot's RF 35mm f/1.4 review

I think Dustin's careful balancing of the benefits and drawbacks of the RF 35mm f/1.4L's design strikes just the right tone. This lens is the only one that prompted me to buy a "backup" of the EF version of a lens since I fell in love with the first RF primes released several years ago.

As I've posted before, craftsmanship means something to me. To others this might be a nostalgic, irrelevant perspective, but I hope Canon changes course with its L primes.

Enjoy the video!

R1 Overheating!

Love the focusing on the R1, just having an issue with it overheating. Was shooting beach volleyball this weekend, temps 40-70 with sunny skies. On average, shot about 500 photos per hour, in short burst, large jpgs only. The R1 has a new (to me maybe) temp meter in the top right corner, that would come on. I got up to 6 of the available 10 bars as I shot. The right side of the camera, where the card is, got fairly warm to the touch. Every 45 minutes of shooting was followed by 15 minutes to upload, so it would cool back off. Tried with 2 different cards. a prograde 3400 and a Lexar 1750. Never had this issue with my R3s.
Any thoughts?

Chances of IBIS in next R>7?

Currently, the R7 is the cheapest / lowest-spec / only APS-C body with IBIS (correct me if I'm wrong on that).

tl;dr: basically, what are the chances of the next R8 / 10 / etc having IBIS? Are Canon going to keep this as a 'pro' (or at least 'expensive') body feature? Or will it trickle down into cheaper bodies in the next year or two?

My dilemma and random ramblings asking for advice (hey, what else are these forums for?):
I have a 7D (mk1), it's pushing 15 years old but it still does what I ask it (most of which lately is taking photos of lenses I don't use anymore to list on ebay).
I have a bucket of good EF glass, and a few more buckets of non-EF glass (don't ask me to list it*), most of which I started off buying to adapt to EF, then just got into film and shot them on their native 35/MF bodies, and thereafter got the LF bug (you still can't beat a 617 Velvia scanned to half a gigapixel or an 8x10 contact print, or the size and fun of my Voigtlander R3A+40 / R4A+21 combo).

As much as I love film (and still have a freezer-full to use up), the main reason I'm contemplating a new digital body is because I love snorkelling, and may not have quite checked the seals on my Nikonos one day and may have given the shutter a nice salt-water bath 2 years ago.
So for my 40th last year, I got asked and was given one of these (whatever the exact model was, BZ100?).

Beautiful, works great with 7D and 15-85 (hard to zoom in the bag, but fixed 15mm is fine). 7FPS Spray and Pray with an empty card works so much better underwater than 36-shots then get out, rinse and dry everything, change film and go again. But the live-view AF just wasn't there 15 years ago. OK, it's somewhat better than the zone focussing of the Nikonos, but when it hunts, it's slower than fixed hyperfocalling. And some video AF would have been nice when that pair of seals buzzed me last summer and scared the crap out of me thinking they were sharks.

So what I need is faster live-view AF for underwater. I'm assuming pretty much any RF body is going to do that. And in IQ terms, again assuming anything will beat the pants off my 15 year old 7D.

What I want is to be able to adapt all of my other lovely glass* for use above and below the water (mostly above). That's easy enough. But given there's the option of having IBIS with all adapted lenses, not just the EF(s), I'd rather spend a bit more dosh to get it.

Current options are either:
- an R7 now, before any new models are announced, circa $1500-1700 new / used on fleabay
- R6 / 6II are $2-2.5k / $2.5-3k
- As much as I'd love an R5/3 or GFX50/100, I just can't justify anything like that with a kid on the way in Jan, until I win the lottery or pay off the mortgage in 10 years.

So option 1, get an R7 now(ish), maybe black friday / post xmas sale new or try get a cheaper used one. Then save the coins and finally get an R5ii/iii or gfx 50/100 ii/iii in a few years.
Or option 2, get a do-everything r6 / 6ii, it's still faster and better in every other way than the 7D, and just use that for the next 10 years.
But option 3 is the rumours-part: what are the chances that the R8/R10 ii will have IBIS? No matter that they're 'lesser' bodies, anything is an upgrade from the 7D at this stage. And if they've got IBIS, all the better.
Or option 4 with more reliance on rumour: When will R7 ii drop? Presumably not before July next year? And how affordable will it be compared to a good used R6ii? I'm assuming there's no chance an R7iii will be more than an R6ii?Put off the upgrade for another year, then either get an R7ii or a (probably by then much, much cheaper) R7?

Anyway, enough ramblings.
If it weren't for IBIS, I'd just get an $800 R100 exclusively for underwater and be done with it. But I just feel like I should get something somewhat better (especially if there's a chance to do things like use my best portrait lens VM 85/1.8 on a stabilised digital body).

* Well, seeing as you asked: EF(s) 8-16/15-85/70-300L/24/28/35/40/50/85/100, m42Takumar 35/50/120, VM 21/28/35/40/50/75/90, Mamiya645 35/45/80, Pentacon6/Kiev88 50/65/80/90/120/180/300/500, Pentax67 45/105, plus a gajillion LF lenses between 65-600 for 4x5/617/8x10 and other random mounts like a few OM macros etc that I can't be bothered trying to remember.

Trying to figure out zoom setting on a video I did

I have the R6ii with the 24-105 stm lense. I shot a video that included some zooming in closer. Is there any way to check a particular spot in the video and find out what the zoom was at that spot? For example, I know I wasn’t all the way at 105, but I’d like to know what the actual zoom was at that point. I’m new to this camera, still learning as I go.

It looks like Samyang is about the announce an RF-S AF 12mm f/2.0, yes.. with autofocus

Samyang was one of if not the first brand to release autofocus lenses for the RF mount under the Rokinon name. However that was short lived, as Canon's lawyers stepped in with the ban hammer. It now appears Samyang will become the third manufacturer licensed to produce RF-S lenses with autofocus. Here are images of

Early Reports: The EOS R1 AF is Better than Expected

Kakakumag.com in Japan took the EOS R1 out for a test drive as it's now commercially shipping, and discovered that it's a pretty swell camera. As it should be, it's the clear 1 series RF camera no matter what you think about the EOS R3. Craig has been notified that his is shipping. I'm decidedly jealous and am looking forward to seeing his basketball images.

Canon Patent Application: Canon Standard Zooms

One thing that Canon has done well with the RF mount is its normal zoom range with the likes of the RF 28-70mm f/2.0L, RF 24-70mm F2.8L, RF 28-70mm f/2.8 STM, RF 24-105mm f/4L, RF 24-105mm F2.8L, and finally the RF 24-104mm F4-7.1 STM. Whew.

There are a couple of “higher-end” RF-S zoom lenses coming with the EOS R7 Mark II

The announcement cycle of 2024 has come to an end, and as we've seen over the calendar year, Canon has addressed a couple of professional full-frame cameras, along with seven new lenses, though two of those lenses were VR things. Thankfully we did see 4 new L lenses, including the Hybrid trinity of L primes
