SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex CF Tripod Kit

SmallRig sent me the SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex CF Tripod Kit. I'm a tripod dork and the new way to extend the legs, especially on uneven surfaces seemed cool, so I asked for one.

I will write about it in a couple of weeks after using it. I am quite OCD about tripod (and bag) design and I'll be honest.

The video head that it comes with is ok, but isn't all that smooth. It'll be fine for most people to get started. There is no bowl for a different head, so you'd have to use bases to mount to this tripod.

There are some fit and finish issues that I see, but that doesn't matter to everyone. It is priced in the mid-tier of tripods.

The leg extension is pretty cool once you're used to it. Press the trigger, drop the legs and it's level 90% of the time, even when you extend them onto uneven surfaces.

I'll do more in an article as I said. SmallRig comes up with some pretty cool things.

Canon R5C autofocus with remote control (also half press button)

Hi everyone, first time posting...
I have a R5 camera that I normally use for photo and video.
I decided to borrow a R5C only for video.
With the R5 I use an external remote control connected to the 3 pin connector.
With that I can control the focus (like with the half press shutter button), start and stop the recording.

It seems to me that this is impossible with the R5C because the rec button only allows you to start and stop the recording, but not control the focus.

Someone can help me with that? I want to find a way to control the focus with the remote control.

Thank you very much.

1000mm, 2x Extender on the 100-500mm

The 2X extender gets talked down a lot, but I accidentally created a nice comparison. The lions in the distance were a couple of hundred yards away. But we could not get closer without leaving the road. Prohibited in the car, and dangerous on foot. I shot, then added the 2x and shot again. Both are nice images. Note the animals did not move, nor did I. Both shots are hand held and I shot 1-20 images of each and chose the sharpest.

What interests me is the detail captured in the animals. The original images are below, (downsized to 500 pixels wide.).

Here is a tight crop on the faces I've upresed the 500mm photo in photoshop to make it the same size.

I think the lions are noticeably more detailed. I wish I'd had a 1.4X converter to try as well.

Patent Application: Automatic Tilt Shift Enhancements

In a long list of related patent applications, we have yet another patent application (2024-157119) one that deals with Canon's ever-growing body of research into automatically controlled and camera-adjusted tilt-shift lenses. Sooner or later these things will come out because, at this stage, research continuing across multiple years and not coming out would be a

rf 200-800 cover

Any good suggestions on a cover for RF 200-800. White works for winter wildlife I guess but kind of sticks out like a sore thumb in summer.
I currently use a hunting sleeve just because I had it already. It does cover up the white but little to no protection. I have used the neoprene covers on other lenses but do not like the part over the barrel. It makes it impossible to zoom. why canon chose white is beyond me.

I found this on YT but not sure I would ever dare put this on the barrel.

R1 Reviews

I thought a thread for reviews of the R1 might have already existed. If so, please let me know and I'll delete this one.

Anticipating many reviews coming with the R1 about ship, I thought I'd consolidate those that I am aware of and start the thread.

Earlier today Jan Wegener posted his R1 review. He has had a pre-production model for a while and put it through its paces. Short answer, he calls it the best camera body he has ever used and mentioned a scenario where he might make it his primary body with the R5 II used for special circumstances. Cited better AF, apparent better DR, great colors, great EVF and being able to use the AF-On button to go from 20 fps (half press) to 40 fps (full press). He admitted his cons were for extreme situations, namely the buffer (which he did hit) and the 24 MPs (an issue with small birds at a distance according to Jan).

Another wildlife photographer that has his hands on a pre-production model is Fabian Fopp. He talks about falling in love with the camera even though he wasn't all that interested before using it. Cons were MPs and wanted even higher fps.

Of course, there is a long thread on Jeff Cable's comments from the Olympics.

Patent Application: The Zoom You’ve Dreamt About: 70-150mm F2.0

In this patent application (2024-154138), Canon hits the ground running on some downright jaw-dropping lovely zooms. Will we see any? I hope so, but I'm sure someone out there will complain about them being too expensive and too heavy. Going by the embodiments, these will be both.

Fire Tower Documentary shot with R6, R7, R8

Back in June I traveled to Bald Knob, West Virginia to spend the night up at West Virginia's most remote and isolated Fire Tower & Watchman's Cabin with my friend Ian. We documented the entire trip with my Canon R6 Mark I, R7, and Ian's R8, and for the past few months I have been working on this video to retell the story of the adventure!

Question: AF options of the Canon 5R M2

Can anyone please explain me in simple words the following 3 AF options:
  • AF-ON Eye Detection AF
  • AE Lock button Metering and AF start
  • Moving AF point, start AF by eye Ctrl
  • Move AF point by eye control

Basically I really have vague idea about the fine differences of all of them.

1730277047527.png

I am using them but am pretty sure they don't react as described ergo better ask veteran wolves here for explanation and opinions. :)

EDIT: Can someone please move the question to the Questions and Answers section? I am sorry for misplacing it. And thanks in advance.

R3 bug with Panning Assist?

Hi!

I have a problem with my newly bought R3 I can’t figure out.

I was going to try the Panning Assist feature and enabled it. I didn’t get the right symbol that it was active so I was just going to turn it off for now. But, when I try to turn it off it says I can’t because HF anti flicker is on. So, I then go turn off HF Antiflicker and I get a message saying I need to turn off Panning Assist to access it, so now they’re both greyed out and one block the other … how do I get out of it?
