PetaPixel: 6D2 vs. 6D1 noise comparisons

https://petapixel.com/2018/02/21/canon-6d-vs-6d-mark-ii-real-life-noise-comparison/

Nutty, they measured noise by shooting swatches and looking at Photoshop 'histogram color spike widths' (for lack of a better term) in pixels. Wider spike = more noise.

The verdict? The 6D2 is not better from a noise perspective, but in fairness, it looks like they compared 1:1 output, when a downsampled 6D2 to 20 MP would improve.

I've never seen this method for noise measurement. Is it common?

Samsung announces mass production of 30.72TB SSD

Yup, you read right, over 30 terrabytes of SSD in a single unit :D Finally, a drive large enough for even the greediest of us to fit a year of photography into one drive.

https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-electronics-begins-mass-production-of-industrys-largest-capacity-ssd-30-72tb-for-next-generation-enterprise-systems

Unfortunately, if you have to ask how much it will cost, you probably can't afford it. It's SAS (serial attached SCSI), SSD, and "enterprise". There are some killer features on it, like monster performance (3-4 times faster than a typical SSD) and write endurance being rated one full write per day (all 31TB), every day for 5 years.

Perhaps there will soon be a consumer photographer's version of this drive! :D

Apology to all forum members.

I want to apologise to any and all forum members I have offended or hurt in the past.

I know I have offended a few. I am sincerely sorry.

I have no excuses. There is no reason to act the way I've sometimes acted. I promise to always think and remember there is another human being on the other end of the line.

Could not find anywhere else to put this post, so I put it here to probably be read by the most members.

Wishing all of you the very best in all facets of your lives. :)

A7R3 weather sealing teardown by Uncle Rog at LR

Worth a look:

"Sony spoke truly. Except for the bottom this camera has thorough and extensive weather sealing, as good as any camera I’ve seen. (Before you Pentax guys start, I have not taken apart a Pentax so it may be completely sealed in a super glue matrix for all I know.)

That being said, the bottom of the camera is not protected worth a damn."

Industry News: Samsung Shows Off The World's Largest SSD at 30.72TB

HTML:
<em>New ‘PM1643’ is built on latest 512Gb V-NAND to offer the most advanced storage, featuring industry-first 1TB NAND flash package, 40GB of DRAM, new controller and custom software</em></p>
<p><strong>Korea on February 20, 2018</strong> – Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s largest capacity Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) solid state drive (SSD) – the PM1643 – for use in next-generation enterprise storage systems. Leveraging Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology with 64-layer, 3-bit 512-gigabit (Gb) chips, the 30.72 terabyte (TB) drive delivers twice the capacity and performance of the previous 15.36TB high-capacity lineup introduced in March 2016.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>This breakthrough was made possible by combining 32 of the new 1TB NAND flash packages, each comprised of 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips. These super-dense 1TB packages allow for approximately 5,700 5-gigabyte (GB), full HD movie files to be stored within a mere 2.5-inch storage device.</p>
<p>In addition to the doubled capacity, performance levels have risen significantly and are nearly twice that of Samsung’s previous generation high-capacity SAS SSD. Based on a 12Gb/s SAS interface, the new PM1643 drive features random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS and 50,000 IOPS, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,100MB/s and 1,700 MB/s, respectively. These represent approximately four times the random read performance and three times the sequential read performance of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD*.</p>
<p>“With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide,” said Jaesoo Han, executive vice president, Memory Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB and at the same time, accelerating adoption of our trail-blazing storage solutions in a new age of enterprise systems.”</p>
<p>Samsung reached the new capacity and performance enhancements through several technology progressions in the design of its controller, DRAM packaging and associated software. Included in these advancements is a highly efficient controller architecture that integrates nine controllers from the previous high-capacity SSD lineup into a single package, enabling a greater amount of space within the SSD to be used for storage. The PM1643 drive also applies Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology to interconnect 8Gb DDR4 chips, creating 10 4GB TSV DRAM packages, totaling 40GB of DRAM. This marks the first time that TSV-applied DRAM has been used in an SSD.</p>
<p>Complementing the SSD’s hardware ingenuity is enhanced software that supports metadata protection as well as data retention and recovery from sudden power failures, and an error correction code (ECC) algorithm to ensure high reliability and minimal storage maintenance. Furthermore, the SSD provides a robust endurance level of one full drive write per day (DWPD), which translates into writing 30.72TB of data every day over the five-year warranty period without failure. The PM1643 also offers a mean time between failures (MTBF) of two million hours.</p>
<p>Samsung started manufacturing initial quantities of the 30.72TB SSDs in January and plans to expand the lineup later this year – with 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 800GB versions – to further drive the growth of all-flash-arrays and accelerate the transition from hard disk drives (HDDs) to SSDs in the enterprise market. The wide range of models and much improved performance will be pivotal in meeting the growing storage needs in a host of market segments, including the government, financial services, healthcare, education, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, social media, business services, retail and communications sectors.</p>

Leaked: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD

HTML:
It looks like Tamron is set to announce a second lens ahead of CP+ alongside <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/tamron-will-announce-the-70-210mm-f-4-di-vc-usd-on-february-22-2018/">the 70-210mm f/4 VC</a>.</p>
<p>The second lens will be a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, no further specifications have leaked at this time.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=34540.msg708682#msg708682">noted on the forum</a>, this is likely for full frame mirrorless cameras, which would be just Sony at the moment.</p>

Today's maternity shoot.

Now that we are here in Texas there is more opportunity than in the Nevada desert. Thanks to Shannon and John. All shot with Canon's wonderful EF 24-70 f/2.8L II

I don't do any skin smoothing, partly because I prefer a more natural human look and partly because my editing skills are horrible. It's just a hobby. :)

ARE Canon heading down the same track as Kodak

Some times I just wonder is it possible that Canon are heading the same was a Kodak, on top and in control but only to fall by the wayside because of the lack of new ideas, I remember all that Kodak achieved and took a wrong turn, Canon seems to be following same path as of late with no interesting new ideas, even the Firmware upgrades are in most cases with just obvious error removals that should not have been their in the first instance, when will the oily spatters be eliminated from our top of the Canon range DSLR etc.

Lens took on some sea spray -- best practices?

Was shooting near the coast in Oregon recently. There was a light drizzle the entire time, but my 5D3 + 24-70 f/4L IS handles that just fine -- so I thought nothing of it.

However, when I looked at the camera the next day, it wasn't just rain. It had white residue (surely salt) over the focus/zoom rings of that 24-70. Some very stiff winds must have also kicked up some sea spray and it promptly dried out. The lens was filtered the whole time, so I doubt any direct fluid ingress took place -- I didn't take any direct hits from a wave or anything.

So I traveled back home today and will promptly bag + desiccant the body/lens combo shortly. Any best practices to get the residue off before it goes in the bag? Warm wet cloth? Some form of cleaning solution?

Thanks!

Any limit as to how long you can leave a 5D3 on?

Long story short, I'm doing something related to multiple exposures, and to avoid bumping the camera and changing its orientation, I decided to just leave it switched on. It's plugged into the wall with a DC adapter. Is there any limit to how long a 5D3 can be left sitting in the on position before it shuts itself off or otherwise wigs out due to a software glitch or some internal chip timer resetting? (Most likely will leave it like that for a few days, but I'm curious about whether or not it could do that for weeks or months.) Obviously I've disabled the "auto power off" setting.

Canon Broadcast Lenses at the Olympics, and Why They Can Cost Upwards of $200,000

HTML:
It’s sometimes hard to fathom spending $12,000 on a <a href="https://bhpho.to/2sFebSS">Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II</a> or $45,000 on a <a href="https://bhpho.to/2EQtddb">Canon CN-E Canon CN-E 30-300mm T2.95-3.7</a>, but Canon’s broadcast lenses are a whole different animal. Take the $222,000 <a href="https://bhpho.to/2obCvai">Canon UHD Digisuper 86</a> for example (please buy one from my link, because that would be cool).</p>
<p><a href="https://www.popsci.com/olympic-camera-lenses-broadcast">Popular Science</a> has posted a great article about some of these lenses that can cost well over $200,000. To be fair, there’s not for the general consumer, but NBC apparently have 70 of them in use at the 2018 winter Olympics.</p>
<p>These lenses are manufactured to the strictest tolerances for obvious reasons.</p>
<blockquote><p>Lens elements are typically ground down from rough glass blanks, and then polished—sometimes by hand—to get rid of imperfections. “We spend a lot more time polishing 4K lenses because imperfections that measure just a nanometer can affect performance,” <a href="https://www.popsci.com/olympic-camera-lenses-broadcast">Read the full article at Popular Science</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Canon really does have the full spectrum of lenses available for whatever is required.</p>

Rattle in lens

Hi all
Managed to drop my 100-400 II over the weekend- not too far but not the best thing to do. After picking it up I noticed a slight rattle which I had not before, but there again I was not listening carefully before either. The lens appears to IS and focus OK. Is the rattle just the IS mechanism not working - anyone else have a rattle in their 100-400 II?
Or do I need to get this checked out?
Thanks

Leaked: Samyang XP 50mm f/1.2 EF for EF Mount

HTML:
Images of a soon-to-be-announced XP Samyang 50mm f/1.2 EF have leaked out.</p>
<p>This lens will be available for EF mount. We don’t see any markings that would suggest this lens is going to have autofocus, so it’s likely going to be similar to the manual focus XP 85mm f/1.2.</p>
<p>It’s possible this will only be for the EF mount.</p>

Which Canon 85mm Lens is for You?

HTML:
<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/e_ZqsMK-hD8" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe><p>Which Canon 85mm lens is for you?</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCknMR7NOY6ZKcVbyzOxQPhw">Kai W</a> breaks down the trio of current 85mm offerings from Canon, the classic <a href="https://bhpho.to/2EQYVH7">EF 85mm f/1.2L II</a>, the brand new <a href="https://bhpho.to/2wsZaDB">EF 85mm f/1.4L IS</a> and the bargain <a href="https://bhpho.to/2sGRBJs">EF 85mm f/1.8</a>.</p>
<p>If we had to choose only one? I think it would be the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS, though I wouldn’t have any problems owning it alongside the other two 85mm options, because they can all fit different shooting situation.</p>
