Canon Fiscal Year End 2017, It Was a Good Year

HTML:
Canon has released their 2017 year end results, and they were quite good for the company. Canon saw a nearly 20% gain in sales and operating income up about $3 billion USD or 44.8%.

Canon is a large company, and their acquisition of healthcare and security companies has had a very positive effect on their bottom line, as well as their tried and true office imaging division.

Things are also looking up for the camera imagine division, which saw growth in a declining market. Canon saw almost a 4% increase in sales and a very good 22% gain in operating profit for the division.

Canon achieved their sales growth with the launch of 6 new cameras, which was the most in the industry, and their growth in mirrorless remains in double digits.

Canon predicts a small growth of 1.2% in camera sales, which would suggest they’ll continue to announce more cameras than anyone else in the industry.

Canon also plans to continue developing their G series line of cameras, even as the compact camera market continues to shrink at a fast rate, Canon predicts a 16% decline in compact camera sales in 2018. Canon will continue to work on increasing their market share, as well as increasing profits in the segment.

Canon had this to stay about the state of the Camera industry:

In 2017, the market for interchangeable-lens cameras shrank by 1% to 11.4 million units. This rather small decrease reflects, among others, the market’s recovery from the supply shortage caused by an earthquake in 2016. We, on the other hand, posted a sales decline of 3% to 5.51 million units, which was in line with our plan. Although our sales decreased at a faster rate than the market, this was expected as our sales were at a high level in 2016 because the earthquake did not affect us.

Canon took steps to stimulate demand through new products, launching 6 models in 2017, the most in the industry. All of these new products were well received by the market, receiving high markets for their enhanced network connectivity and AF capabilities for which there is strong user demand. Among these, we grew sales of the 6D Mark II – a model that features a full-size sensor in a body that is relatively compact and light and offers improvements in basic functions, which contributed to the shift to hi-amateurs. Launching such new products, enables us to limit the decline in selling prices and as a result, we improved sales and profitability compared with last year.

As for 2018, given that the market in 2017 was at a high level due to the earthquake, we expect the market to shrink by 4% to 11 million units. Within this market, however, we expect our unit sales to be 5.5 million units, which is in line with last year.

The new products launched in 2017 that were just highlighted will contribute to sales for a full-year. With this and continued efforts to enhance our lineup we will stimulate demand and work to further increase our market share. Within this, for mirrorless cameras where we are working to enhance our lineup, this year we continue our aim to grow at a double-digit rate, putting focus on expanding sales of mainly new products that captures SNS user demand.

From a profit perspective, we will work to improve our product mix by raising the proportion of new product sales. Additionally, to reduce costs, we will promote automation and in-house production as well as accelerate sales of mirrorless cameras thereby benefiting from lower cost of sales through volume effect.

Next, compact cameras.

In 2017, the market shrank by 10% to 13.5 million units, while our sales were flat at 4.04 million. In 2018, we expect the market to shrink by 19% to 11 million units. Within this, we expect our sales to decline 16% to 3.4 million. Despite the markets continued decline, we will continue to take steps to improve our profitability and market share, expanding sales of mainly G series premium models.

Tilt-shift staycation

I'm considering renting a tilt-shift lens, probably the 24mm, to play with for a week. I'd pick a week in which I wouldn't have a lot of other things going on, and spend a lot of time getting to know the lens and what things of interest I might use it for. I have a 6D2 as my only FF body.

I'm not interested in trying the miniature effect. I haven't done any work for realtors in several years and don't anticipate that being a factor in the future, so this will be just for fun and general education/edification.

I would like to have a plan in mind beforehand.

So do you have specific suggestions for things I might try? I live in a small college town near a lake, and Charlotte is about 20 miles away for cityscapes. There are interesting old courthouses within 50 miles, but I don't have an idea of how I might exploit the features of the lens in photographing them. Photoshop does a good enough job with vertical convergence that I wonder whether the t-s has enough of an advantage in shooting them to be worth the trouble.

Does this sound like a fun project for a week, or would you recommend I take the rental fee and go to a really good steak place for dinner instead?

South Korea

Hi,

I just finished post-processing my photos from a south korea trip in April 2017. First time I was using my Canon 5d mark iv, and i must say that i'm really impressed. In comparison with 5d mark iii, the increased dynamic allows faster post-processing (less digital blending).

For those who are interested, my travel backpack:
body:
-5D Mark IV + 4 canon battery
Lens:
-16-35 f4 IS
-24-70 II USM
-70-200 F4 IS
Tripod:
-Feisol CT3442 + sirui KX30
ND filters:
4 Screw filter haida 1000x / 400x / 64X / 8x

Good Viewing :D

Info on sensor crop for video?

I have a general question about how various Canon cameras use their sensors to capture video. I've picked up some vague ideas along the way as I've read forum messages, and I would like to fill in some gaps in my understanding.

Obviously various cameras are not going to use their whole sensors to capture video, since the sensor has a 3:2 (or maybe 4:3) width to height, and video is normally 16:9 these days (or maybe wider for some purposes).

I get the impression that different bodies might take different approaches to using available pixels to produce video. Perhaps some might use the full sensor width and scale down to 1080p. Some might even use just the central 1920 x 1080 pixels, or maybe cameras do something between those two extremes.

Is there an online guide somewhere that explains how different models approach this task? My interest would be primarily in Canon products, and of course specifically in the ones I use regularly for video now, the 6D2 and the G7X II. But of course a more general discussion, and even better, a comparison of different approaches would be interesting.

But even if you don't know anything comprehensive, some general clarification would be welcome.

Which body for timelapse videos?

Hi guys!

I hope this is the right sub-forum to post in for this topic.

I´m trying a lot as my children grow up and I´ve a lot of sparetime now ;D ;D ;D 8)
So, to do something new - I saw some stunning timelapse videos.
I was told to buy an timelapse slider to create some movement. Yesssss... this is great.
My first 4 videos took more than 400 shots each. The free software just allows this framenumber. Looks great.

But the question for me is: Should I use my 5D Mark IV for it, or buy an M5 or M6 or ... body for it?
An German pro told me to go into an MLS system with an external power account...
Can you give me some advice?

Thanks a lot
Daniela

Another Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Mention [CR2]

HTML:
The last time we were told that a new 70-200mm lens was coming, we assumed it was for DSLRs, but it turned out to be a new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm T/4.4.

We have been told that a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III is currently in testing, though there was no mention of when it may be coming.

There were only 9 years between the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and I expect we’re going to see a similar thing with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III. Other lens series such as the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III have seen even shorter times between updates.

Patent: Fingerprint ID on Your Cameras and Lenses

HTML:
Here’s an interesting patent from Canon. This patent covers fingerprint ID on your cameras and lenses that can control custom functions such as IS, AF and likely anything else you can think of. It also offers the ability to customize the camera and/or lens for multiple users as well as offering a complete lockout of the gear.

Below is a flowchart showing how it works.

Lens retraction rant

Why does my $150 40mm 2.8 conveniently retract the part of the lens that extends during focusing back into the body of the lens when I turn off my camera, and yet my $1900 85mm 1.2 just hangs out where ever it happened to be when it last focused? ::)

Yes, I know there are many relevant answers... The 40mm is a much newer design, the 40mm is designed to be compact whereas the 85mm is a big grapefruit on the front of your camera whether it's retracted or not...

But come on Canon, at least give me the option of having such an expensive lens retract at power-off to lessen the chance of it getting whacked on something and damaged. The 40mm does it so nicely! The software to do this cannot be that complicated. If lens = 85mm 1.2, set lens to infinity focus when power turns off!

Certification Update of Unreleased Canon Gear

HTML:
Here’s a reminder of unreleased Canon gear that has appeared for certification and that we’ll likely see ahead of CP+ in March. The only thing we haven’t heard much about is the new lenses, but we are trying to get them confirmed. We know the EF-M prime is no longer being released ahead of CP+ and will appear later in the year.

We do know that the EOS M50 will be priced closely to the EOS M6, though specifications have been hard to come by.

The New Forum Has Been Finalized

Part 1 of the Canon Rumors redevelopment will happen in 4-6 weeks time, and that being the new forum software and features. There will be lots of changes, upgrades and new ways of doing things. A lot of development and dollars will be going into this project. As with anything new, yes, you're going to have to relearn a couple of things. However, I think after 72 hours or so of using the new forum, you'll forget all about this one.

I've heard you loud and clear on what must remain, and I'll be sure to keep that stuff on the new forum.

Part 2 will be a redo of Canon Rumors 3-6 months down the line to tie all of this together much better.

I'll give you guys a few days notice before we go live with the new forum.

Have a great weekend.

Canon Has 93 Reasons You Shouldn't Settle for Smartphone Photos

HTML:

The Nikkei Asian Review has posted a great article on why Canon will remain relevant during the smartphone photography revolution, and it’s simply because their vast an exception catalog of lenses all 93 EF mount lenses.

The article is behind a pay wall, but there are easy ways around that if you want to read the article, but I’ll leave it up to you to figure that out. :) Though I did just sign-up for a subscription.

Canon saw a decrease of 11.1% in camera shipments in 2016 by volume, but Canon is actively offsetting that by continuing to innovate and release new lenses to fit every niche you can think of.

In 2017 Canon produced it’s 130 millionth EF lens and they’ve ramped up production to about 10 million units a year. The lens market has shrunk since 2012, but is it expected to return to growth in 2018.

The EF lineup consists of 93 lenses, which is far and way the largest of any lens manufacturer on earth. As we saw in the BCN rankings, Canon continues to hold about 25% of lens marketshare in Japan, and those numbers are about the same around the globe. Keep in mind, this doesn’t even include the highly regarded and growing Cinema EOS lineup of lenses.

Lenses provide a better margin for the company over camera bodies, which is an area Canon appears to be innovating slower than the likes of Sony and Nikon, but the sales numbers continue to be in Canon’s favor.

We expect further innovation when it comes to lenses from Canon and we continue to hope that their first foray into the full frame mirrorless world will see an EF mount on any such camera.

DJI Mavic Pro II The Next Drone From DJI

HTML:
This week we saw the announcement of the DJI Mavic Air, a small 4K drone that I happened to have pre-ordered.

If you already have a Mavic Pro and the Air isn’t an upgrade for you, we’re told that the next drone from DJI will be the Mavic Pro II, which will be an “upsized” Mavic Air with a new larger camera.

We’re unsure of the announcement date at this time.

Canon and IHI Planning Japan's First Private-Sector Rocket Launch Site

HTML:
From Asian Nikkei Review

TOKYO — Canon Electronics, IHI Aerospace and two other partners are looking to build the first private-sector rocket launch site in Japan by 2021, a major step forward for nongovernment players in the space sector here.

The location, specializing in small rockets, will be operated by a joint venture founded last summer by the Canon and IHI units with general contractor Shimizu and the Development Bank of Japan. They are looking to begin construction in the Wakayama Prefecture town of Kushimoto, at the southernmost point of the main Japanese island of Honshu. A final decision will come after a geological survey. Read the full story

Patent: Canon APS-C CINI Soft Focus Zoom Lens

HTML:
As we dig through all of this “new camera” chatter from recent days, we continue to be reminded of patent applications over the last few months.

This one is for a soft focus Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3. This sort of lens could basically be an EF-M Cine Lens which would use the soft focus capability to blur out the background in shots.

Canon News Interprets Japan Patent Application 2018-10282:

While the lens itself isnt’ that exciting and originally I wasn’t going to even post this patent application. After some later thought, I decided it may be showing a trend in what Canon may be considering – a EF-M mini-CINI-EOS.

The curious thing to also note is that this would indicate a camera with a APS-C sensor

However both of them exhibit no image height and back focus changes as the lens goes from wide to far, which is a trend in CINI lenses more than regular zooms.

We think there is something definitely going on, as we’re getting a lot of detailed patent applications on complete and near complete products.

Patent: ND Filter Adapter for Mirrorless Cameras

HTML:
I was speaking with others about today’s article about a new type of camera coming from Canon, and it looks like this patent could be related to the new EF/EF-S > EF-M adaptor.

This patent application was published back in October of 2017.

Canon News interprets US Patent Application 20170295307

This patent basically explains a new adapter for mirrorless that would sit in between the camera and the lenses.

This adapter would have the ability to silently change the ND filter value to eliminate aperture opening / closing noise during video recording.

It would also allow for the use of very fast lenses with a dynamic method of controlling the amount of light received by the camera without stopping down the lens.

Supply chain sources have said in the past that Canon can sometimes bring two versions of a product to “production ready” and then basically decide at the last minute which one will get produced. This could be the case with the two rumored camera bodies currently in testing.

More Information About the New Camera Line [CR1]

HTML:
We’ve had a follow-up from yesterdays story about a “new style of camera” being tested by Canon. The original source and second source have added to the story.

A breakdown of what we’ve been told, I’ve labeled the sources 1 (original) & 2 (new):

Removable grip (1)

The body has two scroll wheels like a pro Canon DSLR (1)

Two versions of the camera (2)

Bigger camera is EF/EF-S (2)

Smaller camera is EF-M (2)

Canon is working on a new EF/EF-S to EF-M adaptor to make Cinema lenses fully compatible with the EF-M mount camera. (2)

There is one contradiction between the two sources. Source 1 says the body does NOT look like the XC line, the second source said they do. This sort of thing can be up to the eye of the beholder, so we’ll look past it for now.

After receiving these two separate bits of information, I began to wonder if I was being trolled, but I noticed something from source #2 that gave me a bit more confidence in the information. Still, none of this information is confirmed at this time.

I did lower the rating to [CR1] on this.

Patent: DPAF Curved Image Sensor

HTML:
A patent showing a curved sensor equipped with DPAF has appeared, like the stacked sensor patents, curved sensors appear to be getting closer to being brought to a product.

Canon News interprets Japan Patent Application 2018-014657:

The sensor uses a piezoelectric device to drive the shape change of the curved sensor and has strain gauges (219) to measure the amount of curvature applied. This sensor would automatically change it’s curve shape depending on the characteristics of the lens and also dependant upon the area of focus detection.

Patent: Canon BSI Stacked Sensor

HTML:
It’s patent day, and we have another stacked sensor patent. What’s interesting about this one is how detailed it is. It’s likely we’re going to see some stacked sensor technology in a Canon product sooner than later.

Canon News interprets Japan Patent Application 2018-014519:

This patent is about offloading heat generated from the processing substrate. Heat of any sort is bad for an image sensor, as that turns into noise. As you move more processing into the image sensor substrates you increase the heat generated.

This is the most detailed stacked sensor patent application that I’ve seen to date, and it gets really specific on the size, depth and measurements of the indidvidual sections of the sensor stack. It also demonstrates in it’s embodiments a back side illuminated sensor as the photoelectrical substrate. Read more at Canon News

A New Style of Camera From Canon Currently Being Tested [CR2]

HTML:
A new Canon camera is currently in the testing phase, we’re unsure if it has made its way in the hands of any of the Explorers of Light photographers. Apparently. it’s like nothing seen previously from Canon. This information came from someone who saw one of the test cameras. There are no specifications or mention of whether or not it’s a video or stills camera, but we did get some interesting descriptions about the appearance of the camera.

The camera looks “substantially dissimilar” from any other Canon camera body

A large DSLR-like hand-grip and is deeper/thicker than any of the existing mirrorless bodies, but doesn’t look like a DSLR at all.

A “modern looking” square LCD top screen, with options to display different screens and menus.

Announcement date internally is scheduled for September, 2018.

The only thing that comes to mind for us is this patent of an XC15 shaped camera with an EF mount. While the image from the patent doesn’t show a top LCD, and the patent itself is for one handed removal of a lens and not about the mount or the camera it does have a large DSLR grip and is thicker than any other mirrorless.

This could be a new take on the XC15, or something else. Though if it resembled the XC15 in any way, I would have expected that to have been mentioned by the source. Perhaps the body was seen without a lens attached. We’ll have to wait and see if we get more information.
